It's been a while since Crazy Crow has issued an online newsletter, but we're now getting back on track. Plans are to send these out every two months. Like this issue, they'll be chock-full of craft and product information, plus Sales Specials exclusively for our online subscribers. In order to have a more descriptive title, we changed the name from "eNews Newsletter" to the "Craft-E Crow," because it focuses on craft subjects. We hope you enjoy it, and we'd like to invite your comments as to how we can make it even better to suit your needs. Please contact us at info@crazycrow.com.

CRAFT FOCUS: KNIFE SHEATHS

Image The purpose of Crazy Crow Trading Post's Craft Focus pages is to provide a starting point in your research, to save you time and improve your chances of finding the information and materials you need to do it right the first time.

Beginning any craft project, especially if it is your first time working on a particular item, requires some patience - and a plan:
* Do you want your finished piece to look Indian-style or will it be an original piece with a non-Indian look?
* If you want an Indian look, will your craftwork have a contemporary design or will it reflect the style of a particular historical period?
* Is there a specific tribal design or style to be achieved?
* Do you have instructions on the materials needed and the assembly techniques required?

July/August Craft Focus: Knife Sheaths
As one of the most basic of tools, knives saw daily use by both natives and settlers of early America. Indians and non-Indians, men and women - all used knives. But knives can generate a fascination all their own, and, accordingly, so do the sheaths used to carry them.

CRAFT FOCUS ARTICLE: 2-Piece Plains Indian Knife Sheath Construction
The information for this craft article is an excerpt from the new book Plains Indian Knife Sheaths by Alex Kozlov. Click on the link to this fully-illustrated discussion.

Craft Focus: Knife Sheaths

NEW Plains Indian Knife Sheaths Book by Koslov

Image As an adjunct to our craft article, we also wish to point out several products related to knife sheaths:

Plains Indian Knife Sheaths (4105-058-900) is a complete how-to book for making Plains sheaths. It describes the basics of sheath designs and progresses to techniques used to make sheaths in many styles and decorations. This highly illustrated, full-color work is appropriate for anyone wanting to make a sheath, whether for your Indian or Fur Trade outfit.

For a ready-made sheath, look at our Beaded Knife Sheaths (4929-008-00*). These are fully beaded on the front and made by hand using German-tanned buckskin. They're available in 3 sizes, a variety of colors, and at economical prices. We also offer Quilled Knife Sheaths ( 4929-009-00*). These, too, are made with German-tanned buckskin and hand-decorated using dyed porky quills. One of the styles is the Woodlands Neck Knife Sheath.

NEW Longhunter's Accessories Pattern Set

Image (4799-500-046) includes 8 different patterns for various accessories appropriate for the Eastern Longhunter outfit. One of these is the Woodlands Indian Knife Sheath. Several period accounts from the 1700s refer to the Indian-like dress adopted by many Eastern Longhunters, so this sheath can be a striking accessory for both the Woodland Indian and Eastern hunter portrayals. The neck sheath is the earliest recorded style of Eastern Indian knife sheath, possibly even pre-dating belt sheaths in this region. Variations of this beautiful soft-leather sheath could be found in the Northeast Woodlands, around the Great Lakes, and on west along the Canadian border. Museum examples show that this style ranged in size from the small neck knife sheath to those used with the large beaver-tail daggers. Typically, these were decorated with porcupine quillwork.

Our pattern provides several historic examples for you to consider so that you may use any of several top outlines in place of the top style of our pattern. The pattern is in two sizes to give you options for a small or medium-sized knife. To fit properly, the knife should be of the dagger-style or have a narrow blade with the cutting edge not much wider than the handle.
