Porky Roach Care & Storage

Image Whether you made it or bought it, porky roaches are expensive! Now that you have it, do you know how to care and store it so that it stays in top condition for years? This page on our Crazy Crow website will give you some important tips...

Care Instructioins for Your Porky Roach

CRAFT FOCUS: PORKY ROACHES

Image Beginning any craft project, especially if it is your first time working on a particular item, requires some patience - and a plan.

• Is your craftwork representative of contemporary design, or do you have a particular 'period' in mind?
• Will your project reflect some general 'Native American' look, or is there a specific tribal design to be achieved?
• Do you have instructions on the materials needed and assembly techniques required?

The purpose of Crazy Crow Trading Post's Craft Focus pages is to provide a starting point in your research, to save you time and improve your chances of finding the information and materials you need to do it right the first time.

November Craft Theme: Porky Roaches
No other headgear, with the exception of the Plains warbonnet, personifies the North American Indian as much as the hair roach. Historically, its distribution and use covered virtually all tribes of the Plains, Plateau, Great Lakes, and Eastern Woodlands cultural areas. Paintings by artists in the 1830’s reflected the use of the hair roach at that early date, and contemporary use of the porky roach may be seen in the outfits of the Grass Dancer, Oklahoma Straight Dancer, Oklahoma Feather Dancer, Northern Traditional Dancer, and the Old Time dancer.

Until now, there has literally been nothing available on the web to help you make a porky roach. There were numerous online articles about moccasin and shawl construction for prior Craft Focus pages, but a "dry hole" on this one! Rather than ditching the topic since there was nothing online to refer to, we decided to create the online resource needed ourselves! By following the link below, you will not only go to our latest Craft Focus page, but also to our first online kit instruction. As this process develops, we plan to add things to the online instructions that simply cannot be done in print (audio & video clips, photo galleries & examples, etc.). We hope you find this useful.

Please note, that as a tie-in to this month's Craft Focus, all Porky Kits are on sale as well.

Making of a Porky Roach: Craft Video Series

Image Produced by Loren Woerpel, this 25-minute video shows you step-by-step how to make a contemporary 15-inch "porky" roach, worn by traditional dancers, straight dancers and fancy dancers.

Each step is shown in detail: From building a loom for your work and choosing porcupine quills, to the final sewing and wrapping on the roach. The video includes and insert with plans for the loom and detail drawings.

We recommend this video for people who already have some craft experience or those of you who are just curious about the technique. 30 minutes.
