Newest form of Native American Women's Dance Styles

Women's Fancy shawl Dance is the newest form of women's dance. It is often called the Northern Shawl, because it came from the Northern tribes along the US-Canadian border. Younger women mostly do this dance due to the physical demand on the body. The dance is a free style dance that s similar to the men's fancy. There are many different stories about the Memengwaanh (Butterfly) dancer.

Elaborately beaded capes, moccasins and leggings are complemented by beautifully embroidered or decorated long fringed shawls. The colorful outfits match the spirited twirling and prancing of this exuberant dance.

Women's Fancy Shawl regalia, seen at Native American Pow Wows in the US and Canada, include a dress or skirt, leggings, moccasins, and a beautifully decorated fancy shawl. The shawl is worn draped over the shoulders and is usually made of colorful lightweight fabric. It is decorated with appliqués, paint, and ribbons in a way that has meaning to the dancer. The dress or skirt and leggings can either be plain or decorated, but they are made of fabric and colors that coordinate with the fancy shawl.
