Revolutionary War Weekend at Mount Vernon Mini-Gallery

Reenacted Personnas Add Depth to Revolutionary War Weekend at Mount Vernon
Battle engagements between all these different forces will take place on George Washington’s estate, including cavalry, cannon and other period weaponry.

Along with hundreds of soldiers, an actress portraying Martha Washington will be there, the grand hostess of the event, making sure the men are comfortable and well cared for. Martha was like a mother to them all, knitting socks and other items and rallying other ladies to do likewise, a very sociable person, compassionate, caring.

Gen. Lafayette will join Martha at the event, greeting guests and answering questions. As Washington’s right-hand man and a good friend, gen. Lafayette will be reviewing the troops and will participate in military actions.

There are four battle re-enactments scheduled as part of the Revolutionary War Weekend at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Hundreds of men and women reenactors resided on the estate for the occasion, formed into British and Continental army encampments.

Prior to the battle, an announcer from Mount Vernon will remind visitors that historically, no battles are known to have taken place on the grounds of Washington’s estate. Nor was the ensuing skirmish meant to recreate any actual engagement. But rather, it was meant as a an informative depiction of what warfare may have looked like during the American Revolution.

The standard Mansion tour (included with admission) takes guests to the first and second floors. The premium Mansion tour (available at an additional cost) also includes the third floor. Visit time: Allow 15-25 minutes for the standard Mansion tour, depending on the number of guests each day; 60 minutes for the premium Mansion tour. The Mansion of George Washington’s Mount Vernon is one of the most iconic 18th-century homes in America.

George Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon began as a one and one-half story house built in 1735 by his father, Augustine, and received its well-known name during the ownership of his half-brother Lawrence. George acquired Mount Vernon in 1754, and over the next 45 years slowly enlarged the dwelling to create the resplendent 21-room residence we see today. Washington personally supervised each renovation; advising on design, construction and decoration—even during the Revolutionary War. Conscious that the world was watching, Washington selected architectural features that expressed his growing status as a Virginia gentleman planter and ultimately as the leader of a fledgling democratic nation.

The Chintz Room
After several years of research, work, and collaboration with colleagues and craftsmen throughout the country, the restoration and refurnishing of the Chintz Room, formerly known as the Nelly Custis Room, is complete.

Mansion Outbuildings
Look inside more than a dozen outbuildings where many of the estate’s essential operations—such as laundry, spinning, and meat curing—were performed. Demonstrations occur daily at our working blacksmith shop. Visit time: 30 minutes. Mount Vernon’s historic outbuildings house the many important trades that sustained the bustling plantation.

In the latter half of the eighteenth century, Mount Vernon was the home, farm, and thriving business of one of America’s most prominent citizens. The essential operations of the plantation were performed in numerous buildings scattered throughout the estate. Washington built these vital workspaces during the 1760s-1790s, in his ongoing pursuit of economic independence and financial success.

Fisheries and the Potomac River
Each spring, when fish began running past Mount Vernon’s ten-mile shoreline, everyone dropped everything and headed to the river to haul in more than a million fish in a matter of weeks.

16-Sided Barn
Learn more about Washington’s innovative barn complex at Dogue Run.

Blacksmith Shop
Blacksmithing was an important craft activity throughout most of the Washington family’s ownership of the Mount Vernon plantation. The earliest known reference to a shop dates to 1755.
