Join us for the Annual One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick State Park on September 14-15, 2019 in Big Pool, Maryland and discover, through living history demonstrations, the part Fort Frederick played during the French and Indian War, American Revolution and Civil War. Hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Park entrance fees apply.

One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick will give visitors a look at life in the fort as volunteers exhibit the varied roles the Fort played during the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the Civil War.

Though Fort Frederick isn’t famous for ‘Heroic Last Stands’ or battles, its re-use throughout history, for such a variety or reasons makes it unique. Activities and living history encampments will give visitors a look into the small heroics of history; the daily lives of the people who served throughout these much larger conflicts.

Highlights of One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick include:

  • Flag Raising
  • French and Indian War Era Military Drill
  • “Sundry women” – women’s roles in the 18th Century
  • 18th Century Military Field Music
  • Volunteer Company Drill
  • Cole’s Maryland Cavalry (Union) in the Civil War (Saturday ONLY)
  • American Revolutionary War Drill
  • “Forsaking their Plantation” Maryland Refugees during Pontiac’s War of 1763

The One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick program takes a deeper look at the uses of the Fort and the roles of the people there, during the French and Indian War, The American Revolution, and the Civil War. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. For more details and program times contact the Park Visitor Center at 301-842-2155.

Food, gift, and souvenir items will be available for sale at Captain Wort’s Sutler Shop. In addition to programs in the Fort, the Parks visitor centre and exterior museums have more exhibits about its history, including uniforms, artifacts, and a video.

Fort Frederick is located off of Rt 70 exit 12 at State Route 56, Big Pool, MD. For more information about the Garrison Weekend or other Fort Frederick activities, please call the park at 301-842-2155 during the office hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm weekends.
