Story of The Big Dipper
The Big Dipper is also known as the big bear. Many Native American cultures saw the Big Dipper stars as a bear. A Kiowa legend tells of seven sisters and a brother who lived where there were many bears. One day, the sisters were playing with their brother who pretended to be a bear. Then magically, he turned into a bear and began to chase the girls. They jumped on a big rock shouting, "save us. " The rock heard them and grew higher and higher, keeping them out of the bear’s reach. Soon they touched the sky and became seven stars in a group shaped like a bear–The Big Dipper. In winter the seven stars are just above the very high rock called Tso-aa, also know as Devils Tower. It marks the spot where the Kiowa began their southern migration. On the sides of the rock the claw marks made by the bear can still be seen.
