The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The local tribe’s powwow also goes on at the same time. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grand Portage Rendezvous Days at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center in Grand Portage\, Minnesota. \nTags: Grand Portage Rendezvous Days\, Grand Portage Rendezvous\, Grand Portage Voyageur Rendezvous\, Minnesota Rendezvous\, Minnesota Voyageur Rendezvous \nView Other Minnesota Rendezvous

celebration after a successful summer of recreation activities in Fort Hall. The event was called a social powwow that drew in many young and old dancers and local drum groups to celebrate. One of the main highlights was the Miss Shoshone-Bannock pageant that drew in over 10 plus young ladies from around the reservation. This tradition continues every year.\nPlaceholder \n\nShoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow: Men’s Grass\nOriginal Crown In Museum\nToday\, the beaded sash is still worn but in 2006 the original crown was retired and is presently housed at the local Tribal museum. Each contestant competes every August in the areas of: public speaking\, personal interview\, traditional dish\, traditional dance and a traditional talent. Miss Shoshone-Bannock is a Tribal ambassador and role model for the younger generations. \nOne-of-a-Kind Pageant\nThe cultural pageant was the first of its kind and considered to be a prestigious new title for young Shoshone-Bannock women. Each contestant wore their finest handmade deer skin dresses and family beadwork. The winner held the title for one year where she relinquished her title the following year at the powwow. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s\, where the winner was given a fully beaded ‘Miss Shoshone-Bannock’ sash and matching turquoise crown with the Shoshone rose to wear throughout her reign. \nFort Hall Indian Relay\nThe Indian Relay races have long since been a part of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes culture. The sport actually originated here on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over a hundred years ago. Many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation. The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1 rider\, 1 catcher (Mugger)\, and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap with each horse riding bareback. The rider must dismount without any help from their team mates and without losing control of their horses. \nVendors\nTo join the festival as a vendor\, complete the appropriate vendor form and follow the instructions. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort. \n \nAbout Fort Union Trading Post\nFort Union Trading Post was constructed on the spacious plains in 1828\, near where the mighty Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers joined by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company. This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. This trade business continued until 1867\, giving rise to a uniquely diverse\, peaceful\, and productive social and cultural environment that helped make Fort Union western America’s longest-lasting fur trade post. On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. The house was left riddled with bullet holes\, many of which can still be seen today. \nAbout the Alston House\nThe House in the Horseshoe is a historic house in Sanford\, North Carolina \, and a historic site managed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources’ Historic Sites division. \nLocation\nHouse in the Horseshoe State Historic Site\n288 Alston House Road\nSanford\, NC 27330\n910-947-2051 \nMark your calendar so you don’t miss the next House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment the first weekend in August in Sanford\, North Carolina. \n \nTags: House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\, House in the Horseshoe Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment\, Living History \nView Horseshoe Militia Muster & Candlelight Tour Details

The Corps formed in the late 1800s\, disbanded around the time of the second world war and was reformed in 2004. The uniforms\, consisting of military overalls\, dull green waistcoats and haversacks\, represent clothing of the late 18th Century. \nThis non profit group maintains a busy schedule\, performing in parades\, musters\, re-enactments and large events throughout the New England and the east coast. In the 10 years since the Colchester Continentals reorganized\, they have traveled to perform in places such as Leesburg VA\, Bar Harbor ME\, Philadelphia PA and Fort Ticonderoga NY. They have opened for the US Soccer team\, performed at Valley Forge and Disney World\, and were featured on ABC’s syndicated hit\, Extreme Make Over – Home Edition. \nHistorical Note: You may be wondering about the Steer inked into the calf skin heads of the bass drums. For centuries\, Colchester was widely famed as the home town of Revolutionary War hero\, Colonel Henry Champion\, whom was credited for bringing livestock and rations to Washington’s starving troops at Valley Forge. It is believed that the original Colchester Continentals used the charging steer on their drums to symbolize the strength\, courage and perseverance exhibited during Champion’s journey. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Colchester Muster on the Green in Colchester\, Connecticut. \nTags: Colchester Muster\, Colchester Fife and Drum Muster\, Drum and Fife Corps\, CCFDC Muster on the Green\, Muster on the Green \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events

Over the years\, the acclaimed show has become the summer’s premier muzzleloading event in the eastern U.S. \n\nDixons Gunmakers Fair\nToday\, the Dixon Muzzleloader Shop is recognized for being the largest walk-in muzzleloader shop in the country and has been written about in national publications. Along the way\, however\, it has become known most\, not as a retail outlet\, but rather as the muzzleloader capital of the country each year on the final full weekend in July. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \n \nDaily Show Hours\nFriday & Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSunday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nLocation\nDixon’s Muzzleloading Shop\n9952 Kunkels Mill Road\nKempton\, PA 19529\n(610) 756-6271 \nThe event began as an informal\, two-day weekend event where gun builders could exchange ideas and continue the traditions dating back to the pre-1700s before what became known as the “Golden Age of Muzzle Loading.” Simply dubbed the “Gunmaker’s Fair” by Dixon\, others have come to preface it with their name\, and the event has attracted visitors and exhibitors from all 50 states and eight foreign countries\, including Great Britain\, Lebanon and Australia as the Dixons Gunmakers Fair. \n\nA Learning Place about Muzzleloading Weapons\nThat any event related to firearms can not only survive so long\, but actually continue to grow\, is seen by many as a testament to the importance people place on these historic firearms. Perhaps what is most amazing\, is the emphasis the Gunmaker’s Fair is as an educational event and not as a commercial enterprise\, with no charge for admission. Still\, Dixon refuses to take credit for the success and down plays his role. \nAs gun builders from all over heard about the event\, and folks traveled greater distances to attend\, requests to add Friday and make it three days mounted. Now\, there are events going on all day Friday\, and it’s become one of the most popular days because people come wanting to be the first to pick and choose items the craftsmen and exhibitors have to offer. \nFree Admission & Free Seminars\nIn addition to the free admission itself\, there is no charge for any of the seminars\, some of which are specifically designed for women and children. Seminars are Friday\, from 1-3:30 p.m.; Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\n\nSunday Awards Ceremony\nActivities conclude Sunday\, beginning at 2:30 p.m.\, with the award ceremonies that recognizes the best of the best for the hundreds of entries. As always\, the highlight is the award ceremony for the muzzle loading firearms – including rifles\, smoothbores and pistols – and accessories that include hunting bags\, knives and tomahawks. \nFor More Information & the Complete Seminar Schedule\nFor information about this year’s Dixon Gunmakers Fair\, contact the Dixon Muzzleloader Shop at (610) 756-6271 or view the complete seminar schedule. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Dixons Gunmakers Fair on the last weekend of July at Dixon’s Muzzleloading Shop in Kempton\, Pennslyvania. \nTags: Dixon’s Gunmaker’s\, Dixons Gunmakers Fair\, Dixon’s Muzzleloading Shop \nView other Firearms\, Knives & Collectible Show Events
