On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. The house was left riddled with bullet holes\, many of which can still be seen today. \nAbout the Alston House\nThe House in the Horseshoe is a historic house in Sanford\, North Carolina \, and a historic site managed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources’ Historic Sites division. \nLocation\nHouse in the Horseshoe State Historic Site\n288 Alston House Road\nSanford\, NC 27330\n910-947-2051 \nMark your calendar so you don’t miss the next House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment the first weekend in August in Sanford\, North Carolina. \n \nTags: House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\, House in the Horseshoe Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment\, Living History \nView Horseshoe Militia Muster & Candlelight Tour Details

It is the very site where Fort De Repentigny was constructed to provide refuge for French voyageurs in 1750\, and where\, in 1822\, Colonel Hugh Brady arrived with Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and established Fort Brady. Before all that\, it was the main gathering place of the Anishanaabeg where the adjacent land served as the Wadjiwong (Great Hill) Ancient Burial Grounds; one of the earliest known Anishinaabeg graveyards. \nFor More Information: Angie Patterson Email: apatterson@sault.com Phone: (906) 632-5734 \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Rendezvous in the Sault at the City Hall Grounds in Sault Ste Marie\, Michigan. \n \nTags: Rendezvous in the Sault\, Voyageur Rendezvous in the Sault\, Michigan Voyageur Rendezvous\, Michigan Rendezvous \nView Other Michigan Rendezvous

The Corps formed in the late 1800s\, disbanded around the time of the second world war and was reformed in 2004. The uniforms\, consisting of military overalls\, dull green waistcoats and haversacks\, represent clothing of the late 18th Century. \nThis non profit group maintains a busy schedule\, performing in parades\, musters\, re-enactments and large events throughout the New England and the east coast. In the 10 years since the Colchester Continentals reorganized\, they have traveled to perform in places such as Leesburg VA\, Bar Harbor ME\, Philadelphia PA and Fort Ticonderoga NY. They have opened for the US Soccer team\, performed at Valley Forge and Disney World\, and were featured on ABC’s syndicated hit\, Extreme Make Over – Home Edition. \nHistorical Note: You may be wondering about the Steer inked into the calf skin heads of the bass drums. For centuries\, Colchester was widely famed as the home town of Revolutionary War hero\, Colonel Henry Champion\, whom was credited for bringing livestock and rations to Washington’s starving troops at Valley Forge. It is believed that the original Colchester Continentals used the charging steer on their drums to symbolize the strength\, courage and perseverance exhibited during Champion’s journey. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Colchester Muster on the Green in Colchester\, Connecticut. \nTags: Colchester Muster\, Colchester Fife and Drum Muster\, Drum and Fife Corps\, CCFDC Muster on the Green\, Muster on the Green \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events

Over the years\, the acclaimed show has become the summer’s premier muzzleloading event in the eastern U.S. \n\nDixons Gunmakers Fair\nToday\, the Dixon Muzzleloader Shop is recognized for being the largest walk-in muzzleloader shop in the country and has been written about in national publications. Along the way\, however\, it has become known most\, not as a retail outlet\, but rather as the muzzleloader capital of the country each year on the final full weekend in July. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \n \nDaily Show Hours\nFriday & Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSunday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nLocation\nDixon’s Muzzleloading Shop\n9952 Kunkels Mill Road\nKempton\, PA 19529\n(610) 756-6271 \nThe event began as an informal\, two-day weekend event where gun builders could exchange ideas and continue the traditions dating back to the pre-1700s before what became known as the “Golden Age of Muzzle Loading.” Simply dubbed the “Gunmaker’s Fair” by Dixon\, others have come to preface it with their name\, and the event has attracted visitors and exhibitors from all 50 states and eight foreign countries\, including Great Britain\, Lebanon and Australia as the Dixons Gunmakers Fair. \n\nA Learning Place about Muzzleloading Weapons\nThat any event related to firearms can not only survive so long\, but actually continue to grow\, is seen by many as a testament to the importance people place on these historic firearms. Perhaps what is most amazing\, is the emphasis the Gunmaker’s Fair is as an educational event and not as a commercial enterprise\, with no charge for admission. Still\, Dixon refuses to take credit for the success and down plays his role. \nAs gun builders from all over heard about the event\, and folks traveled greater distances to attend\, requests to add Friday and make it three days mounted. Now\, there are events going on all day Friday\, and it’s become one of the most popular days because people come wanting to be the first to pick and choose items the craftsmen and exhibitors have to offer. \nFree Admission & Free Seminars\nIn addition to the free admission itself\, there is no charge for any of the seminars\, some of which are specifically designed for women and children. Seminars are Friday\, from 1-3:30 p.m.; Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\n\nSunday Awards Ceremony\nActivities conclude Sunday\, beginning at 2:30 p.m.\, with the award ceremonies that recognizes the best of the best for the hundreds of entries. As always\, the highlight is the award ceremony for the muzzle loading firearms – including rifles\, smoothbores and pistols – and accessories that include hunting bags\, knives and tomahawks. \nFor More Information & the Complete Seminar Schedule\nFor information about this year’s Dixon Gunmakers Fair\, contact the Dixon Muzzleloader Shop at (610) 756-6271 or view the complete seminar schedule. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Dixons Gunmakers Fair on the last weekend of July at Dixon’s Muzzleloading Shop in Kempton\, Pennslyvania. \nTags: Dixon’s Gunmaker’s\, Dixons Gunmakers Fair\, Dixon’s Muzzleloading Shop \nView other Firearms\, Knives & Collectible Show Events

Known as one of the two “world’s oldest powwows\,” the annual homecoming celebration honors Chief Little Priest and 75 of his Winnebago warriors who served with the US Cavalry in 1865. The Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration features traditional songs\, dances and food. Visitors come from throughout the US and foreign countries. Camping is available. Craft and food concessions are available on the grounds. \n\nWinnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration\nThe homecoming celebration is an opportunity to celebrate the tribe’s heritage and honors veterans of all wars. The annual celebration begins at dawn Wednesday\, as two of Chief Little Priest’s descendants\, Greg and James Neff\, hoist an 1866 replica flag to the top of its pole. Flags representing 70 or more fallen veterans\, including Little Priest\, will continue to be raised each morning at 6 a.m. and retired at 5 p.m. \nIt’s no small feat for a tribe to have held an annual powwow over a century. The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska — one of two federally recognized tribes of Ho-Chunk Native Americans organized under the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act — prides itself on holding one of “The World’s Oldest Pow Wows.” \nAdmission $5.00 – Public Welcome \nDaily: 6:00 a.m. Flag Raising Ceremony \nRegistration:\nThursday 10:00 a.m. Opens\nFriday 8:00 p.m. Closes \nGrand Entries\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday: 1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.\nSunday: 1:00 p.m. \nLocation\nVeteran’s Memorial Park\nEast Avenue\nWinnebago\, NE 78061 \nFor More Information:\nTara Hernandez 402-878-3100 tara.hernandez@winnebago.com\nVeterans Info: Gordon Rave 402-922-2179 \nWinnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff:\nMaster of Ceremonies: To Be Announced\nArena Directors: To Be Announced\nDrum Judge: To Be Announced\nHead Dancers: To Be Announced\nHost Drums: To Be Announced\nInvited Host Drums: To Be Announced\nCurrent Jr. & Sr. Miss Winnebago \nDance Contest Prize Money\nAll contest point begin Thursday 7:00 p.m.\nGolden Age (50+) $1000 $800 $600 $400 $300 $200\nAdult (20-49) $1000 $800 $600 $400 $300 $200\nTeens (13-19) $500 $400 $300 $200 $100 $75\nJuniors (7-12) $250 $200 $150 $100 $75 $50\nTiny Tots: Paid Daily \nDance Contest Categories\nAll Men: Traditional\, Grass\, Fancy\nAll Women: Traditional\, Hochunk Applique\, Fancy\, Jingle\nAdult Men: Southern Straight\nAdult Women: Southern Combined \nDrum Contest – 7 Places\n$10\,000 $8\,000 $7\,000 $6\,000 $5\,000 $4\,000 $3\,000\nNon-Contest Drums paid each session. \nSpecials: To Be Announced \nHomecoming Celebrates the 1886 Return of Chief Little Priest\nThe United States government forced the Ho-Chunk to give up portions of their land in the early 1800s. The tribe was relocated repeatedly for the next 50 years from Wisconsin to Iowa to Minnesota to South Dakota before being allowed to settle in Nebraska. Many eventually returned to Wisconsin and now comprise the federally recognized Ho-Chunk Nation.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAfter settling in their new homeland\, a group of Ho-Chunk warriors including their last war chief\, Chief Little Priest\, enlisted in the U.S. Army at the request of General Alfred Sully who needed help with battles against Lakota\, Northern Cheyenne\, Northern Arapahoe\, and the Santee Dakota Bands. \nAccording to the Nebraska Education on Location website\, even though Chief Little Priest dreaded the idea of fighting against his Native brothers\, he agreed to fight in order to save his tribe. As a result\, General Alfred Sully used his influence in Washington D.C. to obtain the Winnebago-Omaha agreement. \nThe Winnebago Homecoming Celebration & Pow Wow pays tribute to the return of Chief Little Priest and 75 members of Fort Omaha Scouts Company A\, 34th Nebraska Volunteers in April 1886. Chief Little Priest\, who had been wounded in battle\, died later in September. \nThe Winnebago celebration began in July of 1886 when Grey Wolf\, Chief Little Priest’s brother\, held a celebration of his brother’s life and notable achievements. Chief Little Priest walked on two months after the celebration in September 1886 from wounds he received as an army soldier.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration on the last Thursday – Sunday of July at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Winnebago\, Nebraska. \n \nTags: Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration\, Winnebago Homecoming Celebration\, Winnebago Homecoming Powwow\, Winnebago Homecoming Pow Wow\, Nebraska Powwow\, Nebraska Pow Wow \nView Other Nebraska Pow Wows

When the North West Company first arrived\, they built a trading post where the Indian population and the French explorers bartered for furs\, primarily beaver fur which was incredibly cherished among the European market. Fur traders traveled hundreds of miles and portaged in every direction anticipating the rendezvous\, also known as a meeting place where trading and bartering took place. After furs and other products\, were traded\, the furs were then carried along the Yellow River onto Montreal and then eventually to Europe. At the end of the 1805 trading season\, the fur traders loaded their canoes\, traveled along the Yellow River and never returned to Fort Folle Avoine. What sets Fort Folle Avoine apart or makes this place so unique is that during the 1800’s the French explorers stayed in this area around two years\, where most trading posts were built and lived in for about a year and then abandoned and moved on down the river. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Forts Folle Avoine Fur Trade Rendezvous at the Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park in Danbury\, Wisconsin. \nTags: Forts Folle Avoine Fur Trade Rendezvous\, Forts Folle Avoine Rendezvous\, Wisonsin Rendezvous\, Wisconsin Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other Wisconsin Rendezvous\nView other Voyageur Rendezvous or Encampments

The Deep River Ancient Muster is the oldest and largest gathering of fife and drum participants and enthusiasts in the world and has been referred to as “The Granddaddy of All Musters”\, and “A Colonial Woodstock”. \n\nDeep River Ancient Muster\nUp to 80 fife and drum corp groups dressed in historical attire converge each July on the third Saturday at Deep River. They parade along Main Street\, passing historic homes and buildings while performing some of the same music that provided the cadence for troops marching into battle during the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War and other early American military engagements. \n“It’s (the Deep River Ancient Muster) become the main gathering place for people in fife and drums\,” says Clark\, a music professor at the University of New Haven (Conn.)\, who has attended every Deep River muster since 1964. “People plan their year around it.”[1] \nAlthough the Deep River Ancient Muster is a competition between the groups\, there is a lot of camaraderie between members of the different fife and drum corps. They share in the experience\, music\, heritage and tradition of fife and drum. \nAt the parade’s end\, the ife and drum corp groups make their way to the baseball diamond at Devitt’s Field and line up in a colorful display of band uniforms from early Colonial days to the 1890s. Each group performs a medley of favorite songs\, including Revolutionary War standards such as “York Fusiliers” and “Chester\,” and Civil War tunes such as “The Girl I Left Behind” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” \nVarious awards are presented at the Deep River Ancient Muster for “non-competitive” categories as group traveling the farthest and the group with the most marching participants. \nMuster Date: The Deep River Ancient Muster is always the 3rd Saturday in July \nTatoo: Friday starting at 7:00 pm at Devitt’s Field \nHost Corps: Deep River Junior Ancients \nPARTICIPANT’S NOTE: You MUST read and accept the DRAM Guidelines and Information page before going to the Muster Registration pages. \nOn-line muster registration: Access to on-line registration is at the end of the DRAM Guidelines detail page\, and will end on JULY 1. Registrations after that date will be accepted at the muster field on Friday\, before 8:00 pm. \nParade: Saturday starting at 11:00 am. The Deep River Ancient Muster parade starts at the corner of Main and Kirtland Streets and proceeds down Main Street to Devitt’s Field. \nHost Corp: Deep River Ancient Muster Committee and the Deep River Drum Corps \nDeep River Ancient Muster: Starts immediately following the parade at Devitt’s Field. Roads close at 10:30 am. Parking in several locations along Main Street\, Deep River Congregational Church\, The Stone House\, Deep River Hardware\, Deep River Public Library and Route 80. \nCurrent Year Participating Groups: View list of fife and drum corps currently signed up to attend the Deep River Ancient Muster. \nLocations\nTatoo & Muster\nDevitt Field\n15 Southworth Street\n(Corner Main Street & Southworth Street)\nDeep River\, CT 06417 \nParade\nMain & Kirtland Streets\nDeep River\, CT 06417 \nFor more information: drancientmuster@gmail.com \nEchoes of history\nMost of the music played at the Deep River Ancient Muster dates to the Revolutionary War and has been performed in the same style generation after generation. It’s important for all drum corps to retain their distinctive sound and to carry their traditions forward. Unlike contemporary music that is often “interpreted” by performers\, the music of the eras played by these groups is history\, and as such is played in its original composition. \nDuring the early Colonial era\, America’s fife and drum music grew out of necessity to communicate across distances of up to five miles. Before foundries were established that could cast church bells\, town drummers notified citizens of public events. \nThroughout the Revolutionary and Civil wars\, percussion instruments were used to tell troops when to wake\, eat\, work\, sleep or be on alert. By the Civil War\, young boys were recruited for the task of playing music for foot soldiers to break up the monotony of long marches and to inform troops when to assemble\, charge\, retreat or cease-fire. During the same period\, cavalries introduced a brass horn to the music of war. \nAfter the Civil War ends\, the bugle takes the place of fife and drum for military purposes\, and the fife and drum become a recreational and nostalgic part of music. \n \nMustering a Tradition: About the Deep River Ancient Muster\nThe Deep River Ancient Muster traces its roots to May 13\, 1879\, when five area fife and drum corps participated in a “field day” at Devitt’s Field in Deep River. \n“They were competitive events\, though they weren’t very competitive. It was really an excuse to get together and play music\,” says Clark\, a founding member of the Connecticut Valley Field Music\, a fife and drum band based in Middletown\, Conn.[1] \nFor the next seven decades\, more field days occurred periodically until September 5\, 1953\, when 15 corps from Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, Maryland\, New York and Washington\, D.C.\, gathered for the first muster in Deep River\, which featured a one-mile parade through town and later included a series of short musical performances—called a “tattoo”—at Devitt’s Field. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Deep River Ancient Muster on the third Saturday in July at Devitt Field in Deep River\, CT. \nTags: Deep River Ancient Muster\, Fife & Drum Corps Muster\, DRAM \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events\n[1] Americana: Fife & Drum Corps\, American Profile\, by Caryn B.
