Buchanan Farmers provided the Confederate quartermaster with beef\, cotton\, yarn and corn. Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort\, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery. The unit distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. \nFederal General David Hunter marched through Buchanan on June 13\, 1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg. The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. Period letters tell how McCausland burned the covered bridge over the James River before leaving igniting a fire which destroyed close to thirty buildings. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy\, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill\, the Anchorage\, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Buchanan Civil War History Weekend in downtown Buchanon\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Buchanan Civil War History Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Days\, Buchanan Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Whether the portrayal is that of the western mountain man\, the eastern long-hunter\, or the Native American\, buckskinning allows people to recreate various aspects of this historical period at event such as the Spring Thaw Rendezvous. \nThe Rendezvous is both a history-oriented and social occasion. Many of the “buckskinners” in the Ball and Arrow Primitive Weapons Club enjoy attending and hosting Rendezvous where we camp in pre-1840 lodging\, cook meals over open fires\, and dress for that time period. \nThere are muzzleloading\, primitive archery and tomahawk/knife throwing competitions which take place during these events. Other activities sometimes include fire-starting competitions (using flint and steel)\, games for the children and singing around the campfire. Currently B&A members host three of these camps per year. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Spring Thaw Rendezvous at the Ball and Arrow Primitive Weapons Club in Roswell\, Ohio. \nTags: Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, Ball and Arrow Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, B and A Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, B & A Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, Ohio Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Ohio Rendezvous \nView Other Ohio Rendezvous

The Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair features the best period artisans\, craftspeople\, and sutlers together with an 18th Century encampment. Explore Maryland’s French and Indian War era stone fort built in 1756. See hundreds of reenactors and 18th century sutlers (vendors) selling 18th C. period wares: paintings and prints\, clothing and fabric\, books\, camp gear\, muskets\, fireplace and cooking hardware\, lanterns\, copperware\, etc. Attend the Auction on Saturday for great buys on items donated by the sutlers. \n\nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair\nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is hosted by the “Friends of Fort Frederick” in partnership with the staff of Fort Frederick State Park. To get to the Market Fair\, take exit 12 (MD 56) off of I-70\, about 15 minutes west of Hagerstown. Hours are Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Entrance fees are: Adults – $5\, Children 6 to 12 – $2\, Children 5 and under – Free. 4-Day Passes are available – contact the Visitor Center at 301-842-2155. \nWhen this event began in 1994\, the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair had much more of a rendezvous flavor. Participants portrayed time periods from the 1600s through the end of the mountain-man era in the 1840s\, and even Plains-style teepee camps were common. In 2003\, responsibility for organizing the event shifted from a regional blackpowder club to the Friends of Fort Frederick\, who decided to honor the history of the region and limit the time period for portrayals to the 18th century. \nPublic Hours:\n9:00 am – 5:00 pm Thursday through Saturday\n9:00 am – 3:00 pm on Sunday \nPublic Admission: \nAdults – $5.00\nAges 6 to 12 – $2.00\nAges 5 and Under – free\n4-day passes available; contact the Park Visitor Center at 301-842-2155. \nLocation\nFort Frederick State Park\n11100 Fort Frederick Road\nBig Pool\, MD 21711 \nFor More Information:\nFort Frederick State Park: fortfrederick.statepark@maryland.gov 301-842-2155\nFriends of Fort Frederick: info@friendsoffortfrederick.info\nVolunteer Coordinator: George Michael gfmichael46@gmail.com 301-331-6939\nMarket Fair Committee Secretary Jenifer Scarisbrick 301-824-6512 \nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair Mini Gallery\n\n\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”FORT FREDERICK MARKET FAIR SCHEDULE (Schedule may be subject to change)”]\nThursday\nAll Day – Visit the sutlers\, encampment and the fort.\nFriday\nAll Day – Visit the sutlers\, encampment and the fort. Further information is available at the HQ – Friends of Fort Frederick – tent in front of the store.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nThe Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is a juried event. All clothing\, camping gear and equipment used by participants must be appropriate to the time period from 1730 to 1790. Vendors must also meet these standards\, both in their clothing and equipment\, and in the wares offered for sale. First-time vendors are vetted in advance by the Friends of Fort Frederick Trade Committee before they are allowed to participate. \nThe 18th-century timeframe is in keeping with the event’s venue. The centerpiece of Fort Frederick State Park is a massive stone fortification that was built in 1756\, after the defeat of General Braddock exposed the western colonial frontier to attacks by the French and their native allies. \nDuring the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair\, a contingent of reenactors portraying French and Indian War-era Maryland provincial troops man the fort\, live in the barracks and provide interpretive events for visitors. These men portray members of Alexander Beall’s and Joshua Beall’s companies of Maryland forces. During the Market Fair\, the troops have a schedule of exhibitions that they perform. You can watch marching demonstrations\, flag-raising ceremonies or demonstrations of 18th-century military music. \nCivilian reenactors and living historians of every type that you could have found in 18th-century society can be found at the Fort Frederick Market Fair. Most of the campers portray typical frontier types\, dressing and equipping themselves as hunters or scouts. There is also a large contingent that prefers to portray the higher strata of colonial society\, so that\, among the rough-and-tumble long hunters you’ll find powdered-wig aristocrats and evening-gowned ladies. There are also quite a few reenactors who portray Native Americans of the period. \nRogers’ Rangers at the Market Fair\nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair also serves as one of the largest gatherings of Rogers’ Rangers reenactors. Roger’s Rangers started as an independent company of light troops. Their job was to serve as scouts and skirmishers that operated well forward of conventional troops\, harassing the French and securing intelligence. They performed their work so well that\, by the end of the war\, Robert Rogers was a major leading a small battalion of his Rangers\, and the Rangers were the chief scouting unit for the British forces. Rogers’ Rangers are the direct ancestors of our modern U.S. Army Rangers. \nToday\, Rogers’ Rangers are primarily reenacted by members of Jaeger’s Battalion. Jaeger’s Battalion is a national\, colonial period historical reenactment group headquartered in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. This is one of the oldest reenacting groups in the country. The battalion serves as the umbrella group for the various state-based Ranger companies. At the Market Fair you will usually see Battalion Adjutant Bill Blair leading companies from Virginia\, Maryland and Pennsylvania\, and sometimes companies from much farther afield. \nColonial Commerce – It’s why you’re here!\nThe fort and the military reenactors are a major part of the event\, but the main draw at the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is the vendors. Expect about 150 vendors to set up shop selling their 18th-century goods. Events like this are essential to reenactors and living historians who need to outfit themselves with period-correct gear. \n \nIn addition to craftsmen\, there are vendors who offer the full range of 18th-century essentials. At Fort Frederick Market Fair\, you can fully outfit your person with 18th-century apparel from several excellent tailors. You could also buy every item you would need to outfit a comfortable camp\, from the tent all the way down to a colonial pot scrubber. And you can pick up all the muzzleloading gear you need\, from a custom rifle or musket to a handmade powder horn or a custom shooting bag. And\, if you don’t need any big-ticket items\, you’ll find a full range of small items like cleaning jags and forged screwdrivers. \nIn addition to the formal vendors\, you’ll find many reenactors offering a variety of gear for sale on informal “trade blankets”. Any camper may set up a blanket in front of their camp and offer goods for sale to passersby at Fort Frederick Market Fair. \nAbout Fort Frederick\nFort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres\, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort\, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings. They are furnished with sleeping quarters\, workshops and offices\, just as they would have been during the mid-18th century. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair in April (weekend from Thursday to last Sunday of month) at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nTags: Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair\, 18th Century Market Fair\, Colonial Market Fair\, Fort Frederick Colonial Market Fair\, Fort Frederick Market Fair \nView other Market Fair & Trade Fair Events

The Virginia Regiment Captain George Mercer Co reenactors are a group of avid Living Historians dedicated to memorializing and reenacting Colonel George Washington’s Virginia Regiment known as the “Virginia Blues”. The regiment manned forts and outposts in Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, Maryland and North Carolina during the French and Indian War. We invite those with similar interests to join our group. \nAbout The Battle of Great Cacapon\nOne of the most important military engagements of the War in Virginia took place in the vicinity of Ft. Edwards on April 18\, 1756. In what has come to be called either the “Battle of Great Cacapon River” or “Mercer’s Massacre”\, Capt. John Fenton Mercer\, Ensign Thomas Carter and fifteen soldiers of a larger group were ambushed and killed when they left the safety of the fort to search for a band of Indians roaming in the area. This was the most fearful incident to occur near Winchester. It sent chills through the Governor and Burgesses in Williamsburg and impressed upon them the vulnerability of the frontier and the need for a defensive line of frontier forts.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the first half of the French and Indian War\, Edwards’s Fort was manned and maintained by the Virginia Regiment at Col. Washington’s orders. In later years after the war as bridges began to be built on important highways\, the road was moved to a location with high bluffs along the bank. When the Northwest Turnpike was completed in the 1830s\, Edwards’s home was no longer the center of town; it was then located well north of the highway. As Joseph Edwards’s heirs divided his lands and the town began to develop\, the no-longer-necessary wooden stockade rotted away. Eventually all traces of Edwards’s house and of the stockade fort disappeared.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nThe Fort Today\nLittle is known about the Fort at Joseph Edwards. Its location has been verified by preliminary archaeological excavations\, but much remains to be discovered. In May of 1756 after Mercer’s Massacre\, the House of Burgesses of the Colony of Virginia\, at the urging of Col. Washington\, ordered a chain of forts to be built from Henry Enoch’s at the Forks of Capon south to Halifax County. Several of these forts were in Hampshire County\, but only the site of Edwards’s Fort is definitely located and available for investigation today. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Mercers Massacre Reenactment: The Battle of the Great Cacapon in April at Fort Edward in Capon Bridge\, West Virginia. \nTags: Mercers Massacre Reenactment\, Battle of the Great Cacapon Reenactment\, French & Indian War Reenacrment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments\, Musters and Other Events

Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, Florida. \nTags: Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\, Fort Zachary Taylor Living History Weekend\, Ft Taylor Living History Weekend \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Facilities at the fort include picnic areas\, a canoeing pond\, the replica fort including three cabins and restrooms. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFort Buenaventura has been constructed on the original site of the fort built in 1845 by Miles Goodyear and his wife. It has been reconstructed according to archaeological and historical research.. There are no nails in the stockade; instead\, historic wooden pegs and mortis and tenion joints hold the wall together. \nMiles Goodyear Builds Fort Buenaventura\nMiles Goodyear was a mountain man during the last years of the fur trade who built and occupied Fort Buenaventura in what is now Ogden\, Utah. \nAs the fur trades declined and way stations such as Fort Bridger began to spring up on the overland trails\, Goodyear decided to build an enclosed fort on the large westward bend of the Weber River\, approximately two miles south of its confluence with the Ogden River and about one-quarter mile west of the present end of Ogden’s 28th Street. The stockade was constructed with cottonwood logs set upright in the ground that enclosed about one-half acre of land adjacent to the river. It was begun in 1845 and completed by the end of 1846. Four log cabins occupied the corners of the fort\, and sheds\, corrals\, and a garden were also located within the enclosure. Additional corrals were located on the outside to accommodate cattle\, horses\, goats\, and sheep. The garden was watered by river water carried by bucket to the beans\, carrots\, cabbages\, radishes\, and corn. \nThe fort was occupied by Goodyear\, his family\, other trappers\, Indian helpers\, and visitors. It is apparent that Goodyear hoped also to use the fort as a base for trapping and trading\, and hoped also to profit from being of service to overland emigrants. \nIn July 1847\, Goodyear visited with the first Mormon company traveling west on the Bear River west of Fort Bridger\, and he tried to entice them to settle on the Weber River. He was successful. In November 1847\, he sold the fort and everything in it but his horse\, to James Brown (authorized by the Mormon High Council) for $1\,950. The settlement was soon called Brownsville and later\, Ogden.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Buenaventura Easter Rendezvous in Ogden\, Utah. \nTags: Fort Buenaventura Easter Rendezvous\, Fort Buenaventura Rendezvous\, Utah Rendezvous\, Utah Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Utah Mountain Man Rendezvous

Dressed in period garb\, rendezvous participants will compete in target shooting\, tomahawk throwing\, fire making and other skills the mountain men of the fur trade era needed to survive in the unforgiving wilderness. \nWhile some rendezvous require strict adherence to period garb and proof of significant primitive skills to participate\, the Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders Rendezvous is more relaxed. Although pre-1840s dress and camps are encourages\, members are just as likely to sleep in a fully loaded RV as they are in a period appropriate teepee. \nThe Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders\, hosts of the rendezvous\, are a group of men & women that celebrates the skills of surviving in the pre 1840s. We hold monthly shoots and an annual rendezvous and treks. We shoot period correct trade guns\, rifles\, and pistols as well as practice hawk & knife throwing and flint and steel fire starting. We welcome all interested parties to join us at the spring rendezvous and fall trek. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nShooting Events\nShooting events include simulated duels\, knocking down silhouette targets of chickens\, turkeys\, pigs and even squirrels\, and even seeing who can snuff out a candle flame with a bullet. \nCamping \n\nCamping Fee $20.00 per vehicle\nNo Ground Fires\nOnly contained\, attended\, and above ground fires allowed.\nThis is a very pretty site (and a working sheep ranch\,) with a small stream running through it. The Russian-American Company\, worried about the dwindling supply of sea otters in their hunting grounds in Alaska and the northwest\, established Fort Ross on a bluff north of Bodega Bay in 1812. The colony would serve as a hub for Russian and indigenous hunters and traders until its abandonment in 1842. This marine-based commercial fur trade in California\, which was dominated by British\, American and Russian companies\, focused on selling luxurious sea otter pelts mostly to China. \n \nAbout the Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders\nThe Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders has been around since 1973. Until it closed in 1996\, members shot at the Cotati Rod and Gun Club. After the club closed\, members were forced to find a new site and headed north\, Tognetti said. Club members now meet up to shoot monthly at the Marie Hill Ranch rendezvous site\, which is on private property off Highway 128. The annual rendezvous is a much larger affair that runs from Thursday to Sunday and is held in April. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders Rendezvous in April at the Marie Hill Ranch in Yorkville\, California. \nTags: Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders Rendezvous\, Sonoma Valley Muzzleloaders Rendezvous\, California Mountain Man Rendezvous\, California Rendezvous \nView other California Rendezvous

In addition to dancing\, there will be vendors selling merchandise such as dream catchers\, flutes\, sand paintings and many different types of bead work. The SDSU pow wow kicks off with Kumeyaay Bird singers followed by the Gourd Dance and Grandy Entry which signals the official start of the festivities. \nKumeyaay Bird Songs have been passed down through generations and are used in times of celebration or grief\, to sing\, dance\, and share culture in the company of friends.\nBird Songs are used in the place of a written history and record an oral history and way of life for Kumeyaay people. Through the use of animal metaphors and allegory\, the songs are used to instruct and imprint collective teachings about practical things such as food\, the environment and geography\, as well as history\, customs\, and social/moral values. \nThe Gourd Dance is a Kiowa Tribe ceremonial dance that honors warriors or veterans. Many of those that dance this style are veterans and the idea is to honor all warriors alive or fallen for their service. Most notable of the the gourd dance is the use of either a gourd rattle or metallic salt shaker rattle and a red and blue wool blanket draped over the shoulders. \nGrand Entry is the official start of the pow wow and all dancers enter the arena. During the grand entry\, the color guard brings in the Eagle Staff which is a symbol of American Indian Nations\, the U.S flag\, state and veterans flags are also represented. McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac landed at Ft. Monroe and Newport News Point and began making their way towards Richmond. By early April\, they had been stopped by General John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, while reinforcements from General Joseph Johnston’s army began arriving from northern Virginia. Both sides settled into a siege along the Warwick River and around Yorktown. \nCome see this historic siege recreated at locations impacted by armies from both sides. This event will take place on Saturday 10-5 pm and Sunday 11-3 pm. \nEndview Plantation:\nThroughout the Civil War\, refugees fled as armies moved through the countryside. These families didn’t know when or if they would be able to return home and if they did\, what they would find. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, Lee Hall would’ve been the epicenter of the Confederate resistance to McClellan’s Union army with staff officers busy keeping the army running. As Gen. Joseph Johnston’s army began to arrive from northern Virginia to reinforce Magruder’s troops\, many regiments passed by Lee Hall or camped on its property before moving on to their places in the Confederate fortifications. One such unit was the 3rd South Carolina Infantry. See living historians portraying Magruder’s staff and the 3rd SC Infantry. Lee Hall Mansion is located at 163 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 888-3371. \nNewport News Park:\nAs soldiers from both sides settled into a siege\, the 15th North Carolina Infantry was sent to Dam #1 (one of 5 dams used to make the Warwick River impassable) to build more fortifications and protect the dam from a possible crossing. On April 16th\, the 3rd Vermont Infantry tried to cross the river before being forced back by overwhelming Confederate reinforcements. See living historians portraying members of the 15th NC and 3rd VT infantry at the original site near the Discovery Center.
