The Corps consists of four units: the Field Music; Knowlton’s Connecticut Rangers; Capt. Stephen Buckland’s Artillery; and the Company of Artificers. The musicians are attired in the regimental uniform of Col. Charles Webb’s 19th Connecticut Regiment of Foot in which unit Capt. Nathan Hale served in 1776. Their commitment to authenticity has resulted in their having won the coveted recognition from the Company of Military Historians. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. The Pow Wow will be held on the last day of the four-day multi-sport and cultural event\, set to inspire\, educate and celebrate participants and spectators alike. The Embody the Spirit Pow Wow will be part of the official closing events\, including a community feast and closing ceremony. Although a focus of the MIG 2018 is to celebrate the global Indigenous community\, a special emphasis on the cultures and traditions of ‘Indigenous Ontario’ will be showcased in the spotlight. \n\nEmbody the Spirit Pow Wow | Masters Indigenous Games\nThe Embody the Spirit Pow Wow will be held at Downsview Park\, where the majority of Masters Indiginous Games sport competitions are set to take place. To showcase the unique cultural make up of Indigenous Ontario\, the Pow Wow will feature a variety of dance specials\, including a competitive Smoke Dance special with male and female categories and a Smoke Dance Golden Age Demo special. Drum groups\, a vital component for any Pow Wow\, attending from across Ontario\, include Smoke Trail\, Little Creek\, and M’skhaaziwin. The Smoke Dance special will be led by traditional Haudenosaunee singers\, Old Mush. The Shuswap Indian Band and Akisqnuk used to organize separate (events)\, but now organize one jointly. \nThe day will begin with a fund raiser breakfast between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m.\, the grand entry will start with flags followed by the opening prayer. There will be children’s activities\, drumming\, dancing and storytelling about traditional legends between noon and 3:30 p.m. when the closing ceremony will begin. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. The festival was started at the suggestion of Mayor Gary Cook of Plymouth\, Indiana. In its start it was only a one day event with a parade and has since grown to a two-day event. The festival has seen over 4\,000 visitors in recent years and continues to grow. It is always held the first weekend in June. \nA major part of the festival is a focus on the Yellow River itself and the environment around it. We want to help our community better understand the ecological significance of the river and its relationship to Marshall County history and the larger geographic region. Hundreds of Reenactors and thousands of spectators come from all over the state and nation each year for this spectacular event. Much time is spent in planning its reenactment for the time and space available. The Moorpark Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment is presented by the Rotary Club of Moorpark\, and is designed to educate the public about the historical significance of the Civil War and its effect on the United States including the abolishment of slavery. There will also be historic dancing and music playing near the food court. \nThe Encampment\nUnion and Confederate encampments can be visited where various demonstrations occur\, such as blacksmithing\, doctor’s tent\, the chapel\, the use of arms and cooking on an open fire\, etc. The soldiers are in authentic costumes and stay in character as they converse with the public\, transporting them back to the 1860s. The Civilian Camp is right alongside the soldier’s camps. Demonstrations here include many skills needed for day-to-day life in that period\, such as sewing\, weaving\, cooking\, etc. \nSutlers\nSutlers are civilian merchants who sell provisions to an army in the field\, in camp\, or in quarters. They get to see first-hand what a typical Civil War encampment looks like\, the surgeon’s tent\, the soldier’s clothing\, their guns and ammunition\, canons firing\, the thrill of talking to Abraham Lincoln and General Lee\, a typical soldier’s mess\, and they’ll be able to talk to re-enactors\, in full costume and in character. All of this will bring the experience to life for the students. \nIf you haven’t planned a field trip for your history class\, we encourage you to consider our event.
