After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The Smoke Dance special will be led by traditional Haudenosaunee singers\, Old Mush. Old Mush is a singing society from Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation\, with very specific rules\, traditions\, leadership\, and responsibilities who raise funds for their support their community members in time of need. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Within its grounds was once located Dunks Ferry\, a site of Revolutionary War activity. Nearby sites of interest to military historians include Civil War campsites\, hospitals\, memorials and military grave sites and Fort Mifflin. \nEach year\, an historical battle of action of Civil War history is selected by the Committee to recreate as faithfully and authentically as possible. The action of battle should involve local troops from Philadelphia and environs to portray. The time period and terrain should be presented as well as can be done. We also try and present smaller sections of a larger action on the Brigade level\, where the numbers engaged are actually accurate to the recreation. The tactics\, uniforms\, weapons and ceremonies are all authentic to the Action selected. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. Please join us! \n \nAbout the Battle of Natural Bridge Early on the morning of March 6\, 1865\, shots rang out in southern Leon County where the St. Marks River temporarily flows underground then reemerges\, thus forming a natural bridge; these shots marked the opening skirmish of the Battle of Natural Bridge. Over the course of the day\, Union troops\, including the 2nd and 99th United States Colored Troops (USCT)\, attempted to charge over the Natural Bridge. Each charge was repulsed by artillery and small arms fire by the Confederate defenders. By days end\, Union forces retreated to the protection of the Federal fleet at St. Marks. Saturday and Sunday include battle reenactments with over 200 Union and Confederate reenactors. Reenactors will be on hand for afternoon tours of their military camps. Oak Grove served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. In March 1865\, the plantation became a Union hospital during the Battle of\, part of the larger Battle of Averasboro. Cannon and bullets have scarred the building. It is considered one of the oldest houses in Harnett County. \nAbout the Battle of the Black River & Battle of Averasboro\nThe Battle of the Black River was part of the larger Battle of Averasboro. The Battle at Averasboro was intended to slow Gen. William T. Sherman’s army down so the Confederates could organize at Bentonville. The Battle of Averasboro was fought March 16\, 1865\, in Harnett and Cumberland counties\, North Carolina\, as part of the Carolinas Campaign of the American Civil War\, was a prelude to the climactic Battle of Bentonville\, which began three days later. Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman was moving his army north towards Goldsboro in two columns. The right column (Army of the Tennessee) was under the command of Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Davis’s XIV Corps began to arrive on the field. Outnumbered and in danger of being flanked\, Hardee’s troops withdrew. \nThe Confederates had not held up the Union Army as long as they had hoped.
