Eighteenth Century Field Day is a wonderful tradition that begins with a 10 mile run from Haddonfield to National Park that mirrors the run that Jonas Cattel made in 1777 when he went to warn the American patriots the Hessians were coming to attack Fort Mercer. \n\nAssault on Fort Mercer Reenactment (aka Battle of Red Bank Battlefield Reenactment)\nThe Assault on Fort Mercer Reenactment commemorate the 1777 assault on Fort Mercer on the grounds surrounding the original fort. Sutlers and craft people will be set up among the exhibitors near the historic Whitall House as well. \nFree Admission – Public Welcome \n18th Century Field Day Schedule\n10:00 am The Colonial Conjurer\n10:30 am Awards Ceremony\n11:00 am First Battle Reenactment\n11:30 am The colonial Conjurer\n12:00 pm Children’s Muster Drill\n12:30 pm John Bartram Speaks\n1:00 pm Sea Dogs Shenanigans\n1:30 pm Children’s Muster Drill\n2:00 pm Second Battle Reenactment\n2:30 pm Sea Dogs Shenanigans\n3:00 pm A Soldier’s Life \nReenactor Information\nFull and probationary members of the Continental Line and British Brigade are invited to participate in the commemoration of the 17TT assault on Fort Mercer on the grounds surrounding the original fort in National Park\, New Jersey. The 240th anniversary of this important Philadelphia Campaign attack should be especially interesting and action-filled event. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Participant Detail”]\nTroops should be at Fort Mercer no later than 10 a.m. An officers meeting will take place in front of the Whitall House also at 10 a.m. Two lively tacticals are scheduled for the Assault on Fort Mercer Reenactment: one at 11 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. As before\, the sponsors will provide lunch to all troops and authentically-dressed campfollowers. \nYour unit will receive a stipend for each uniformed soldier present on the field and significant additional funds for artillery. Sutlers and crafts people will be set up among the exhibitors near the historic Whitall House as well. \nCounty and park staff go to great effort to make this a hassle-free and successful event for reenactors. From a spectator’s point of view\, it is also perhaps the safest reenactment sponsored anywhere: crowds are kept off the field by county employees and there is immediate battlefield cleanup by park staff.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nContact: \nFreeholder Director Robert M. Damminger (856) 853-3395 or\nFreeholder Frank J. DiMarco (856) 853-3386 \nLocation\nRed Bank Battlefield Historical Park\n100 Hessian Ave\nNational Park\, NJ 08063\n856-853-5120 \n18th-Century Field Day and Jonas Cattell Memorial Run\nThe Assault on Fort Mercer Reenactment is part of tha larger 18th-Century Field Day and Jonas Cattell Memorial Run held annually at Red Bank Battlefield Park. Enjoy battle reenactments\, colonial demonstrators\, vendors\, food\, and fun! Learn about the Battle of Red Bank and why New Jersey is called “The Crossroads of the American Revolution.” Tour the Whitall House and visit with our hearth cookers preparing delicious fall-inspired food. Take in a spectacular sword fight and enjoy a colonial magic show. Cheer on the Jonas Cattell Run participants at the finish line. Fun\, food\, and activities for everyone! \nAbout Jonas Cattell Memorial Run\nAt the age of 18\, in October 1777\, Jonas Cantwell became a hero. At that time\, a force of Hessian troops was camped in Haddonfield. Jonas was said to have been apprenticed to a blacksmith in Haddonfield\, but had stayed there too late and was arrested by the soldiers for violating curfew. His punishment was to spend the night in jail until first light. During the night\, Jonas overheard the Hessian and British soldiers discussing a surprise\, early morning attack they were planning for the following day. They planned to march to Fort Mercer on the Delaware River and overthrow the American patriots who were stationed there. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”More about Jonas Cattell”]\nJonas Cattell was familiar with all of the back trails in the area. In fact\, he was known to have created a number of the trails. When he was released the following morning\, Jonas used those back trails and ran the ten miles from Haddonfield to Fort Mercer so he could warn the patriots. Thanks to his knowledge of the area\, he arrived well before the Hessians. This warning allowed the Americans to strategically position themselves to defend their fort. Even though the American patriots were outnumbered by three to one\, because they were able to prepare for the battle against the Hessians\, they were able to defeat the Hessian and British soldiers\, and to inflict massive casualties while suffering minimal losses within their own ranks. After the battle\, Jonas Cattell enlisted in the American forces and served throughout the Revolutionary War. \nThe Jonas Cattell Run was started in 1969 to honor this great American hero\, and takes place each year during October. The Jonas Cattell Run starts at King’s Court in Haddonfield and finishes at Fort Mercer in National Park\, New Jersey. The Haddonfield DAR Chapter presents a plaque to the first teenage runner to reach the finish line at Fort Mercer[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nAbout the Battle of Red Bank\nLate in September 1777\, Philadelphia was captured by British General William Howe\, with a serious disadvantage. Extensive American river defenses blocked the shipping of food and supplies to the British army and citizens of Philadelphia. A major attack was planned against the garrison at Fort Mercer. A British brigade of about 1\,200 Hessians under Colonel Carl Emil Ulrich Von Donop was ferried over to Coopers Ferry (now Camden) spending the night in Haddonfield. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nOn the morning of October 22\, 1777\, Colonel Von Donop and his brigade marched on Fort Mercer. Young Jonas Cattell\, an apprentice blacksmith\, alerted Colonel Christopher Greene that a surprise attack was imminent. Around 4 pm\, the attack began. Quickly gaining the old northern section of the fort\, the Hessians faced another 10 foot wall and abatis of sharpened tree trunks and branches. The disordered Hessians tried to move forward\, but the Americans gained the advantage and held the fort. Hessian casualties amounted to over 500\, including the mortally wounded Von Donop; while American counted 14 killed and 23 wounded out of 600. Many of the wounded\, including Von Donop were taken to the Whitall house where they were tended by American doctors and Ann Whitall\, who had remained in her home. Colonel Von Donop died in another house nearby and was interred with remains of his brigade on the battlefield. \nThe battle of Red Bank resulted in heavy losses to the British and was a much needed morale builder to Washington’s army\, giving new hope and rallying the spirits of the soldiers. This victory coupled with the British defeat at Saratoga\, New York\, resulted in the French decision to enter the war against Great Britain. The fur trade was the primary reason for the exploration of the American frontier and this enterprise was spurred on by the demand for pelts which were used to make the very expensive and extremely popular felt hats that were fashionable in Europe from 1550 to 1850. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. If you have any questions about anything you see\, just ask one of the reenactors. They have spent much time researching their persona\, and most are happy to share what they know. The Grafton Rendezvous is located on the Grafton waterfront at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Parking is plentiful and downtown Grafton is an easy walk from the site. \nGrafton Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n\n \nPublic Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nCamping\nPre-1840 dress and camp required for the primitive area\nEarly setup on Wednesday\nNo camp fee or fee for demonstrators\nModern camping area separate\nFirewood\, Water\, Porta Potties and Trash Disposal will be provided \nTrader and Sutler Information\nTrade fees will apply: Blankets $10\, Food Vendors $50\, and Tent Traders $25\nBlanket Prize Entry: $15 value will be judged \nFor more information contact:\nCall Cindy Grizzle: 618-372-8672 or Ralph & Mary Mosby 618-258-7970\nEmail graftonrendezvous@gmail.com \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grafton Rendezvous in Grafton\, IL on the third weekend of October on the banks of the Illinois River. \nTags: Grafton Rendezvous\, Grafton Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous \nView other Illinois Rendezvous

Thousands of people from across North America descend on the San Manuel Pow Wow the second weekend each October to compete for $250\,000 in prizes for dancing\, drumming and singing contests. The Pow Wow hosts hundreds of dancers and more notably\, several illustrious drums from throughout Indian Country. The event is hosted by the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians\, presented in the spirit of togetherness and affirmation of Native American culture. \n\nSan Manuel Pow Wow at Cal State San Bernardino\nThe San Manuel Pow Wow is always free to the public. This is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the finest Native American singers\, dancers\, and drummers in North America and Canada. It’s also a time to reaffirm our cultural and spiritual roots\, both for individual tribes and for Native Americans as a whole. \nFriday: The San Manuel Pow Wow is a three-day event of music and dance that is both a celebration and competition with participants vying for prizes and honoring enduring Native traditions. Friday activity begins around sundown\, with an elder blessing the grounds with sage and offering a prayer for good spirit and a good time. This is traditionally followed by an exhibition of bird singing and dancing. The grand entry follows after which it’s time for the dancing (contest\, exhibition\, and intertribal). At the end of the evening\, there is a small procession removing the flags from the arena proper\, which ends each day. \nSaturday: Two grand entries highlight Saturday’s schedule\, one in the afternoon\, the other in the evening. Exhibitions of gourd dancing by Southern tribal representatives and bird singing/dancing precede the afternoon session; and a bird singing/dancing exhibition takes place before the evening’s grand entry. \nSunday: Both of the Grand Entries are followed by more dancing (contest\, exhibition\, and intertribal). Sunday features one grand entry in the afternoon\, which is again preceded by exhibitions of gourd dancing and bird singing/dancing. Then\, it’s time for the climactic round of contest dancing. It’s the last opportunity for all of the competitors to impress the judges. Once that is over\, the judges’ votes are tabulated\, the winners announced\, and prizes awarded. Unlike the other two day of the San Manuel Pow Wow\, however\, there is a more formal\, spiritual closing ceremony that marks the official end of the Pow Wow. \nFree Admission – Public Welcome \nSan Manuel Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPOW WOW SCHEDULE \nFriday\n5pm – Blessing Of The Grounds\n6pm – Bird Singing And Dancing\n8pm – Grand Entry\nMidnight – Retreat Colors\nSaturday\n11am – Gourd Dancing\nNoon – Bird Singing And Dancing\n1pm – Grand Entry\n6pm – Bird Singing And Dancing\n8pm – Grand Entry\nMidnight – Retreat Colors\nSunday\n11am – Gourd Dancing\nNoon – Bird Singing And Dancing\n1pm – Grand Entry\n6pm – Announce Winners | Retreat Colors \nFor More Information:\nSan Manuel Pow Wow Committee  909-425-3450  powwowsanmanuel@gmail.com \n \nContestants will compete for over $250\,000 in prizes.\nParticipant Registration begins at 5 p.m. \nMEN’S DANCE CONTESTS\n6 Winners From Each Men’s Category:\n$1\,500 $1\,200 $1\,000 $800 $400 $200 \nGolden Age (65+): Northern/Southern\nSeniors (50-64) Combined: Northern\, Southern\, and Fancy/Grass\nAdult (18-49): Northern Contemporary\, Northern Traditional\, Chicken Dance\, Southern Straight\, Grass\, Northern Fancy\, Southern Fancy \nWOMEN’S DANCE CONTESTS\n6 Winners From Each Women’s Category:\n$1\,500 $1\,200 $1\,000 $800 $400 $200 \nGolden Age (65+): Northern/Southern\nSeniors (50-64) Combined: Northern\, Southern\, and Fancy/Jingle\nAdult (18-49): Northern Buckskin\, Southern Buckskin\, Northern Cloth\, Southern Cloth\, Jingle\, Fancy Shawl \nTEEN DANCE\nWinners From Each Teens Category:\n$500 $300 $200 $100 \nJUNIORS DANCE\nWinners From Each Teens Category:\n$250 $200 $150 $100 \nDRUM OVER $100\,000\nBring your best singers!\nAll Styles Combined\, no separate categories\n1st-$20\,000 • 2-$18\,000 • 3-$15\,000\n4-$13\,000 • 5-$12\,000 • 6-$10\,000\n7-$9\,000 • 8-$8\,000 • 9-$7\,000\n10-$6\,000 • 11-$5\,000 • 12-$4\,000\n13-$3\,000 • 14 through 17-$2\,000 each \nYOUTH DRUM\n1st-$5\,000 • 2nd-$3\,000 • 3rd-$1\,000\n4th-$500 • 5th-$500 • 6th-$250\n7th-$250 • 8th-$250 • 9th-$250 • 10th-$250\nOther contest dancing TBD \nVENDORS\nWith Respect To Indian Culture\, Native American Artists Only.
