It was used as an encampment from 1838-39. The park is the burial site for two Cherokee Chiefs who died during the removal (“Fly South” and “Whitepath”). This long\, cruel relocation has become known as the “Trail of Tears” and by Native Americans as “The Trail Where They Cried”. \nAbout the Hopkinsville Trail of Tears Pow Wow\nThe idea for hosting a Pow Wow in Hopkinsville was developed by the Trail of Tears Commission\, Inc. as a way to commemorate in 1988 the 150th Anniversary of the tragic and cruel Cherokee removal from ancestral homelands in the southeast across the Mississippi to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. Known as the “Trail of Tears”\, this forced removal affected Hopkinsville as it was on the removal route and served as a major stopping point for the Cherokees in Kentucky during the fall and harsh winder of 1838-39. Kentucky had even older ties to the Cherokees as it was once a part of Cherokee ancestral lands. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’ forget the next Trail of Tears Pow Wow the first full weekend after Labor Day at the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park in Hopkinsville\, Kentucky. \nTags: Trail of Tears Pow Wow\, Trail of Tears Powwow\, Kentucky Powwow\, Kentucky Pow Wow \nView Other Kentucky Powwows

Because of development or other factors\, many other Civil War reenactments have to take place near but not on the actual site of the battle. \n\nBattle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment\nExperience the sights and sounds of battle as cannons blast\, the horses charge and the soldiers give the Rebel yell as they clash in authentic conflict on the historic grounds of Tunnel Hill. Sherman\, as well as various food vendors and period sutler tents. Interact with the reenactors\, visit Union and Confederate camps\, then find your spot along the spectator line to watch the battle unfold at 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. \nBetween 500 and 700 Civil War reenactors\, representing both the Union and the Confederacy\, are expected at the Battle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment. That will include infantry\, cavalry\, and artillery\, all part of reenacting the Battle of Tunnel Hill\, which was fought on Nov. 25\, 1863\, when Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s troops attacked troops led by Confederate Gen. Patrick Cleburne as part of the Battle of Missionary Ridge. \nHours\nSaturday & Sunday\nGates Open 9:00 am – 4 pm\nBattle Reenactments Daily 2:00 pm \nAdmission\nAdults $10\nChildren 12 and under – Free\nAdmission includes battle and Tunnel Hill Heritage Center and museum\, the historic Western & Atlantic railroad tunnel and the Clisby Austin House. \n \nLocation\nTunnel Hill Heritage Center\n215 Clisby Austin Road\nTunnel Hill\, GA 30755\n706-876-1571\nDirections: I-75\, Exit #336\, U.S. Hwy. 41 north 4-1/2 miles\, right on Oak Street in Tunnel Hill; or I-75\, Exit #339\, U.S. Hwy. 41 south 4 miles\, left on Oak Street. \nFriday School Day\nLiving History Program for Area School Children on Friday Morning through Afternoon. Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood recuperated at the house after his leg was amputated\, and the leg was buried nearby. The house later served as a headquarters for Sherman. \nSutlers (Period Vendors)\nThere will be several “sutlers\,” vendors selling food and drink as well as Civil War-style clothing and other items. Sutlery is by prior arrangement through the Sutler Coordinator or Event Coordinator due to site carrying capacity. \nPLEASE NOTE FLYING OF CONFEDERATE NATIONAL AND REGIMENTAL COLORS IS ENCOURAGED.\nWe will not disgrace our ancestors\, Confederate or Federal by attemoting to place the Politiccally Corerct Crowd\, nor will we bow to Tyrants who wish our History made palatable to them. \nThis was a Bloody War that Fire-formed this Nation into who it is today. These were American Citizen Soldiers\, who held different Loyalties in battles that showed the true Valor of both Sides as well as the terrible sacrifice\, showed their Honored Banners from that War. \nIf you do not like either the Union of States National and Regimental Colors nor the Confederate National and Regimental Colors\, please do not attend as a spectator\, we respect your beliefs and would fight to protect them but we also recognize our ancestors beliefs and history and will not bow our heads on either side to political expediency nor to ANY hate group. \nADA Accessibility Notes\nThe museum is equipped with handicap restroom facilities; parking available; there is a lot of walking\, both on pavement and on the ground. \nPet Friendly Notes\nDogs must be on a leash at all time; while they are welcome\, it’s not recommended due to the loud noise of the battle (cannons and gun fire) \nAbout the Construction & Battle for Tunnel Hill\nIn 1836 the Georgia General Assembly created the Western & Atlantic Railroad\, which would connect Ross’s Landing (soon to be renamed Chattanooga) with a point on the Chattahoochee River. Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced. Confederate forces approached Tunnel Hill twice more during the campaign – Wheeler’s cavalry in mid-August\, and Hood’s infantry after the fall of Atlanta in mid-October – but neither time did they attempt to damage the tunnel. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment in Tunnel Hill\, Georgia. \nTags: Battle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment\, Battle of Tunnel Hill Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

The Rendezvous participants are in historically accurate clothing and shelters. We expect to have over ninety encampments and demonstrators. The students\, parents and teachers will be immersed in a rich discussion of history\, social customs\, and the skills and items that were necessary to survive on the frontier. The time period we encompass with the Rendezvous is from the period of early exploration\, through the fur-trade era\, to the early colonization of our area\, approximately 1660 to 1848. This material is appropriate for most 4th\, 5th and 6th grade classes studying American and local history. Our capacity is limited so participation in “Student Day” is by invitation only. We continue to direct our focus toward making this a truly educational event. \nAll students attending our School Day are free\, including chaperones and teachers. We are proud to offer such a rich educational experience at no cost to area schools. Our Rendezvous is run by a non-profit organization and committee of volunteers; a suggested donation of $3 per person would be greatly appreciated from those who are able. \nEach student will be given one free “student” pass so that they may return with their families on Saturday or Sunday when the Rendezvous is open to the general public. \nIf you have questions\, please call 708-551-2509. \n“School Day” Registration Form[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nFood Vendors\nThere are a variety of food vendors at the Rendezvous. Trapper Days Rendezvous is one of the major yearly rendezvous events of the Tallow River Trappers hosted at the South Platte Valley Historical Society’s Historic Park. \n\nTrapper Days Rendezvous\nTrapper Days Rendezvous is a good time for all. Families and “pilgrims” are welcome to visit and get a feel for the historic rendezvous encampments of the mountain men. The rendezvous camp and the fort and the historic park are open during the day. The rendezvous coincides with the Trapper Day festivities in the city of Fort Lupton. In the rendezvous area of the historic park there is a Traders Row that provides trade goods from the 1830s. At dusk\, pre-1840 dress is required for everyone wanting to be in the rendezvous encampment. \nBeing the spring rendezvous\, the rendezvous camp area of the South Platte Valley Historic Park is greening up. Big leafy cottonwood trees provide shade and the fresh grassy areas provide a comfortable place to set up camp. Nearby\, snowmelt is running down the Platte River. Non re-enactor visitors are welcome during the day\, but at the end of the day only campers in pre-1840 clothing are allowed in the rendezvous area. There is a separate area for “Tin Teepees” and modern camps setups for those not in period attire. \nFort Lupton Trapper Days Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n\n \nEarly Set-Up\nEarly set-up is on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the official dates of the Trapper Days Rendezvous. This allows campers and traders to establish their camp the weekend before the rendezvous. Camps must be broken down the last day of the rendezvous. \nLocation\nSouth Platte Valley Historic Park\n2001 Historic Parkway\nFort Lupton\, CO 80621\n303-857-1710 \nFor More Information:\nCall (303) 857-1710; Email spvhsboard@gmail.com \n \nAbout Lancaster Lupton’s Trade Fort\nIn 1836\, Lancaster Lupton\, formally a lieutenant in the U.S. Dragoons and a West Point graduate\, began building a trade fort that became a competitor to the mighty Bent and St Vrain Fur Company for the fur and buffalo hide trade with the plains tribes. While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Lancaster Lupton first came to the area with a military expedition in 1835. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. Come see his trade fort and walk through the inner plaza to visit the blacksmith and carpenter shops\, living quarters\, kitchen and food preparation rooms\, trade rooms\, cantina and storage room with historic artifacts.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout South Platte Valley Historic Park\nHistoric Fort Lupton (aka Fort Lancaster) and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park encompasses 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton\, Colorado. The land consists of a large natural and camping area immediately along the river and a high bench of land where the original Fort Lancaster was located.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAlong the river\, in groves of cottonwood trees are camping areas that can be used by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops with reservations. These camping areas are also used by the re-enactment department of the SPVHS – the Tallow River Trappers – to hold periodic rendezvous events. Immediately along the river are nature areas that are home to deer\, turkey\, foxes and other animals and birds. At the north end of the historic park is a muzzleloading shooting range leased by the Fort Lupton Muzzleloading Club. \nStart your tour of the historic park at the re-creation of Fort Lancaster\, which was in operation from 1836 to 1844. Move down the path and see the restored trapper cabin from the 1850s\, which was originally located down along the Platte River in Adams County. Moving further down the path\, your will see both the Independence School built in 1875 and the Donelson homestead house built in the 1860s. The Donelson House and the Independence School represent the settlement of the Platte Valley started by the early fur trappers and traders.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nHosted by The Tallow River Trappers\nThe Tallow River Trappers is the living history branch of the South Platte Valley Historical Society\, sponsor of the annual rendezvous. The Tallow River Trapper has their own campsite below Fort Lancaster in Fort Lupton\, Colorado. They support five other rendezvous a year in addition to the \,and welcome all to attend. More about the Tallow River Trappers. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Trapper Days Rendezvous in the rendezvous area of the South Platte Valley Historic Park in Fort Lupton\, Colorado on the weekend after Labor Day (Thursday – Sunday). \nTags: Trapper Days Rendezvous\, Trapper Days Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Fort Lupton Trapper Days Rendezvous\, Colorado Rendezvous\, Colorado Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Colorado Rendezvous

This Learning Tent is set up to mirror a truer form of “Indian Education\,” which is to educate as needed and within a specific context\, to make sense and be meaningful. Table-top events may include beadwork\, silverwork\, cradleboards\, quillwork\, moccasins\, toys & games\, buffalo rib-bone rattles\, dream catchers\, Dakota language\, children’s drums & more. \nTalk Circle\nThe Talk Circle is the heart of the Winona Great Dakota Gathering. A moderator\, called the “Circle Maker” introduces a focus for the day and provides histrorical background. The Circle Maker explains the procedure and invites discussion. As one’s turn comes up\, each person may choose to talk or listen (‘pass’). \nThe reason this event is so important is because it directly facilitates friendships and one-to-one interactions. Descendants of people who were at war 150 years ago\, are not to blame for what their ancestors did. However\, when people suffer by each other’s hand\, “historical trauma” is real to the descendants on all sides. The WDUA Talk Circle promotes good feelings among all participants. \nUnity Feast\nThe Dakota as well as other native American nations are known for generous hospitality\, gift-giving\, and providing food for people who attend Wacipi (pow wow). In the spirit of that tradition\, the Great Dakota Gathering invites indigenous populations and local residents to share in community feasting. The feast is a time to honor special guests and elders and remember ancestors in a ceremonial way. \nCeremonies\nSpiritual ceremonies are important to experience because spiritual ceremonies are at the center of traditional life. In Minnesota\, Dakota ceremonies were outlawed until the Jimmy Carter years in the White House. As trust has built\, people have begun to share their spiritual ceremonies with the people of Winona. Some in which we’ve been privileged to participate include: Sunrise Ceremony\, Wiping of Tears\, and Friendship Honoring Ceremony. In contemporary Native American life\, traditional spirituality and Christianity are often blended. The WDUA Great Dakota Gathering seeks to provide authentic ceremonies in which anyone can find meaning. They are planned and guided by spiritual leader from Native American & Christian traditions. \nSunday Community Spiritual Service: Native American music\, prayers\, and purifying sage are blended with Christian music and liturgy. The focus varies\, but always includes special ceremonies\, guests\, celebrations\, and themes. \n \nTags: Great Dakota Gathering\, Minnesota Powwow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Great Dakota Gathering at Unity Park at the East end of Lake Winona in Winona\, MN. \nTags: Great Dakota Gathering\, Minnesota Indian Pow Wow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nView Other Minnesota Powwows

Check out living history exhibits and exciting educational events for the whole family. Both days we will have battle reenactments\, a live music festival\, the village of Jacksonburgh\, sutlers row\, and arts and crafts show\, and so much more. The Jackson Civil War Muster is the largest\, longest running Civil War event in the Midwest and offers educational family fun for all ages. Join us and experience history come to life. \n\nJackson Civil War Muster\nMore than 1\,500 participants bring the 1860s to life at the Jackson Civil War Muster\, attended by around 30\,000 spectators every year. Since 1984\, the annual two-day Muster has featured the reenactment of a different battle on each day. The battles alternate each year\, so last year’s battle will never be the same as this year’s. It’s a unique opportunity to relive a turning point in our country’s history\, and one that few reenactments can beat. \nA Weekend in the Past\nAn average morning at the Jackson Civil War Muster begins with battalion drills from both sides\, Union and Confederate. Events follow in the Historic Village of Jacksonburgh\, a battle encampment re-creation that houses historian lectures\, impersonators and period music in the hours leading up to the battle. The main attraction features 1\,500 reenactors armed with weapons\, uniforms and personalities that would have been commonplace during the Civil War. Guests and participants often join for a concert\, a military ball and an artillery “night fire” when the battels are over. Admission is free for spectators. For more information and a detailed schedule of the two-day event\, visit CivilWarMuster.org. \nJoin the Battle – Reenactor Information\nEnthusiastic reenactors are what brings the Jackson Civil War Muster to life. If you want to volunteer or inquire about volunteering\, check out the event’s registration page. The Muster also has openings for event volunteers\, non-profits\, arts and crafts booths\, and vendors. To register online or to view registration documents\, visit the forms page. \nVisitor Information: Experience the Muster\nThe Jackson Civil War Muster draws people in from all around Michigan and beyond. If you have never been or if you are like the hundreds of people who show up just before 2 p.m. to watch the battle\, you are missing out on some of the best parts of the Muster. The 2 p.m. battles on Saturday and Sunday draws thousands of people who scale the hill\, sit in the hot sun and enjoy a moment in history. But\, the Civil War Muster is more than just battles. Here is an insiders list of the top things to bring\, see\, do\, and eat to truly EXPERIENCE the Muster. \nJackson Civil War Muster Gallery Preview\n\nView Full Gallery\nSee & Do\nBe sure and pick up a program. They are usually $2.00 and you will find Boy Scouts and Civil War Muster volunteers and the JROTC all around the park ready to sell one to you. In the program you will find a map\, a list of the activities\, information about the battles and thank you’s to all the people who make this event possible. Once you have your program in hand\, you are ready to take a trip back in time. Be sure and take the walk to the settlers’ encampment. The reenactors set up tents\, cook over open fires and live the life of the Civil War Era. Next\, be sure and walk through the “village”. Here you will find craftsman showing off their skill and selling their wares. Everything from blacksmiths and dress makers to candle stick makers. Don’t miss out on the formal ball or Lincoln’s speech. \nFood\nYou can’t talk about the Civil War Muster without talking about food and most importantly the Root Beer and Lemonade stand. It’s easy to find on the corner of Brown and Randolph streets. It’s always easy to find\, just look for the longest line. The best part is once you purchase your bottle (they offer a variety of sizes) you can take it back and have it refilled at a discounted price. Usually very close to the root beer stand is the kettle corn. Don’t worry you won’t have any problem finding it. Just take a deep sniff and follow your nose to the sweet smell of cooking kettle corn. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Bring something to sit on while watching the battle\, blankets or camp chairs work fine. Bring or be prepared to purchase water. There is little shade at Cascades Falls Park and you will want to stay hydrated. Wear\, and bring\, sunscreen and slip on your comfy walking shoes. If you have little ones\, or someone that is sensitive to loud noises\, consider bringing a set of ear plugs. The battle gets very loud. \n \nBonus Info\nThis is a FREE event. You can come and enjoy the Muster\, walk around\, see the battle and never have to spend a dime. Parking is run by the Boy Scouts and you will be directed into a spot that you will easily be able to get out of when you want to leave. This event happens no matter the weather so as long as you come prepared you will be able to experience everything the Civil War Muster has to offer. \nExplore Jackson\nExplore the pivotal role that Jackson played in the anti-slavery movement of the 1850s\, leading up to four years of American civil war. From striking monuments and locations to widely attended events that continue to honor an undeniable impact\, the stories of the Civil War hold a special significance within Jackson’s heart. \nAbout the Jackson Civil War Muster\nIn honor of the area’s widespread history\, the Jackson Civil War Muster was started in 1984. It still runs every summer\, featuring more than 1\,500 reenactors and 30\,000 spectators. Visit a re-creation of the original village of Jacksonburgh\, watch an artillery “night fire\,” and enjoy live period music at this annual summer tradition in Sparks Park\, also known as Cascades Park. \nYear-Round History\nThe first Civil War volunteer regiment in Michigan came from Jackson\, and several spots around town reflect invaluable reminders of the history that followed: Withington Park\, Evergreen Cemetery\, Ella Sharp Museum\, First Congregational Church\, and Michigan Military Heritage Museum\, a museum honoring Michigan veterans from the Civil War as well as other wars. \nLocation\nSparks Foundation County Park\n1400 South Brown Street\nJackson\, MI 49203 \nFor More Information: jae@experiencejackson.com (517) 262-6391 \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Jackson Civil War Muster in August at Sparks Foundation County Park in Jackson\, Michigan. \nTags: Jackson Civil War Muster\, Jackson Civil War Days\, Jackson Civil War Reenactment\, Jackson Michigan Civil War Muster\, Jackson Michigan Civil War Days\, Jackson Michigan Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Fort Frederick was built in 1756 to defend the frontier against French and Indian raiding parties coming east from the French Fort Duquesne\, in what is now Pittsburgh. Fort Frederick is unique because of its strong stone wall\, large size\, and roomy barracks. Fort Frederick also saw service during the American Revolution as a prison for British soldiers. \nFor the next 131 years\, the fort and surrounding lands were farmed. During the Civil War\, Union troops were often stationed near the fort to guard the C & O Canal. In 1922\, the State of Maryland acquired the fort. During the Great Depression of the 1930s\, a company of the Civilian Conservation Corps restored the fort and began development of the state park. In 1975\, the park reconstructed two soldier’s barracks inside the fort. These barracks are open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on the weekends in the spring and fall. During those times\, staff and volunteers dressed in 18th century clothing occupy the fort\, demonstrating daily life in the 18th century. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Frederick French and Indian War Muster at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nTags: Fort Frederick French and Indian War Muster\, French & Indian War Muster\, Fort Frederick French & Indian War Muster\, French and Indian War Muster \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events

Custer and the 7th Calvary. It was a victory celebration to honor many Lakota\, Dakota\, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors who fought in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Akicita also carried home the personal flag of the fallen General Custer along with several troop guidon flags.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the years since the Battle of the Little Big Horn took place\, the US Army has never attempted to claim the captured flags from Indian Country. In 1984 Francis White Bird\, Sicangu Lakota tribal member and Decorated Vietnam Veteran\, had replicas of the captured flags made. A ceremony was held at Fort Meade in Sturgis to dedicate the flags. The flags were carried in the grand entry at the Rosebud Wacipi that year for the first time and Mr. White Bird gave the history of them and the celebration’s origins. The Lakota descendants present that day were proud to be part of a waktegli waci or victory dance. \nOn the first day of the fair\, there would be a morning charge. Many young men and women would mount their horses for a long charge through camp. Lakota victory songs were sung and the women sounded their trill. The Wacipi was held for people to dance and enjoy themselves. Other ceremonies\, such as a young woman’s coming out celebration or other feasts to honor loved ones\, were also held during the Wacipi. \nAnd when sacred ceremonies were taken underground after being outlawed by the federal government\, our people would sometimes conduct them under the cover of the annual celebration so as to avoid detection. I remember listening to the story of a kettle dance held during the Wacipi. A late Sicangu elder witnessed this ceremony as a child. She spoke of watching a big crowd surround her older relative as they took part in the ceremony. Located on lands assigned to the Ponca Indians as a reservation after their removal from Nebraska in 1877\, the park is a roughly triangular area of 26 acres lying just north of the Ponca Indian community of White Eagle.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe park has been in use by the Ponca Indians as a campground and site of traditional ceremonies and dances since 1878. The main features of the park are a welled spring and two dance arenas still used for ceremonies\, social activities and the annual Ponca Powwow. The smaller South Arena\, in use since the late 1870s\, is simply an open grassy area surrounded by trees. The larger North Arena\, in use for most of the 20th century\, lies on open ground in a circle of bleachers.\nWhite Eagle Park is the first property in Oklahoma to be nominated and listed as a traditional cultural place on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located five and one-half miles south of Ponca City in the White Eagle community of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma\, \nThe campground in White Eagle Park was the location for one of the most important\, unifying\, and enduring Ponca traditions\, the Ponca Powwow. By 1938\, the annual Ponca Powwow had grown to a four-or five day event with large crowds converging on the campground at White Eagle Park to watch or participate in the dances. They could also view exhibits of Ponca crafts and watch baseball games featuring the Ponca Indian Cyclones. A Powwow Princess was chosen on the opening Thursday night\, a list of dance contestants was announced\, and a schedule of events through Sunday night was advertised in the newspapers. \nEarlier in the 1930s\, a New Deal program\, thought to be the Works Progress Administration or the Civilian Conservation Corps\, Indian Division\, had walled the spring and built a gazebo over it and a stairway for easier access from the camping areas. Workmen had also constructed three large five-tiered stone and concrete bleachers on level ground at the north end of the park\, which provided audience seating for a space that served as both a baseball diamond and a large\, lighted dance ground now known as the North Arena. For generations of the Ponca people\, particularly those who no longer lived in the White eagle community in the late 20th century\, the Ponca Powwow and the return to the campground at White Eagle Park meant coming home.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nPoncas Create “Fancy Dance”\nNot a historical dance tradition of any tribe\, the Fancy Dance was created by members of the Ponca tribe in the 1920s and 1930s\, in an attempt to preserve their culture and religion. At this time\, Native American religious dances were outlawed by the United States and Canadian governments. Traditional dances went “underground\,” to avoid government detection. However\, this dance\, loosely based on the traditional War Dance\, was considered appropriate to be performed for visitors on reservations and at “Wild West” shows. Two young Ponca boys are specifically credited with developing the fast-paced dance that the audiences loved and the Ponca Tribe soon built their own dance arena in White Eagle\, Oklahoma.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nWithin no time\, other tribes continued the practice and created new dances that could legally be danced in public. In the 1930s\, the Kiowa and Comanche created new styles of dance regalia that was incorporated into the Fancy Dance. \nEven before the Fancy Dance was established\, an intertribal Pow Wow circuit had already been organized where various tribes held dance contests. These became an important source of revenue during the Great Depression. In the late 1930s\, women also began to perform in the Fancy Dance \nThe dance is fast paced\, colorful\, and highly energetic\, often including tricks and extremely athletic movements. Dancing regalia includes brightly colored feather bustles and headwear\, beaded bodices\, leggings\, shawls\, and moccasins. Clothes are also decorated with fringe\, feathers\, embroidery or ribbon work\, and other rich designs. Beaded cuffs\, chokers\, earrings\, bracelets\, and eagle plumes are also worn. Fancy dancers are the most commonly scene in public exhibitions today and the dance has also became a competitive sport.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nThe White Eagle Park Ponca Powwow & Celebration is not responsible for theft\, accidents\, or short funded travelers. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next White Eagle Park Ponca Powwow & Celebration at White Eagle Park in Ponca City\, Oklahoma in August. \nTags: White Eagle Park Ponca Powwow\, White Eagle Park Ponca Celebration\, Ponca Tribal Powwow\, Ponca Powwow\, White Eagle Park Ponca Pow Wow\, Ponca Tribal Pow Wow\, Ponca Pow Wow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow\, Powwows in Oklahoma \nView Other Oklahoma Pow Wows & Events
