The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Community hosts the Traditional Mdewakanton Wacipi (Flandreau Pow Wow) every July on third weekend (Friday – Sunday). The Flandreau Pow Wow begins with the Grand Entry of all the dancers entering the arena\, led by the flag bearers. \n\nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi)\nA Pow Wow (Wacipi in Dakota language) was originally a spring event to celebrate the seasonal renewal of life. People would congregate to sing\, dance\, renew old friendships and form new ones. Pow wows had religious significance as an opportunity for families to hold naming and honoring ceremonies. The term pow wow is traced by some to the Algonquin language and is thought to have been used by non-Indians to mean\, in general a council or meeting. \nToday\, pow wows are still very much a part of the lives of many Native Americans around the country. While some pow wows begin as early as March\, the pow wow season runs from June until September. Pow wows are held every weekend\, often at several locations during peak periods. Many families pack up and “go on the circuit\,” camping out and enjoying the traditional celebration activities of singing\, dancing and seeing old friends not seen since the previous season. Whether you are “on the circuit\,” or just visiting to see what the excitement is all about\, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Flandreau Pow Wow. \nPow Wow Details\nFree Admission / Session Pay Out\n1st 20 Drums Guaranteed Drum Split\nMeals – Provided Friday and Saturday \nGrand Entry: \nFriday: 7:00 pm\nSaturday: 1:00 pm & 7:00 pm\nSunday: 1:00 pm \nRegistration Opens: Friday 3:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am\nFlag Raising: Friday 9:00 am; Saturday 9:00 am; Sunday 9:00 am \nFlandreau Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff\nEyapaha: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nHost Drum: To Be Announced\nColor Guard: To be announced\nMeals – provided Saturday and Sunday\nPrincess Contest: To Be Announced \nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi) Location:\nFlandreau Wacipi Grounds\nNorth of Flandreau off Highway 13\nFlandreau\, SD \nHost Hotel: Royal River Casino\, 877-912-LUCK; ask for Powwow Rate. \nFor more information: \nEmail: flandreauwacipi@fsst.org\nPhone: Mike Wakeman Phone: 605-530-0236\nVendor Information: Mike Wakeman 605-530-0236 \nThe Flandreau Powwow is a family friendly event. Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow is a three day celebration of traditional Native American culture – a place and time where local people can observe and learn about that culture and a bridge of friendship between the former and present inhabitants of the Wallowa County. For three days\, experience traditional Native American songs\, dances and spectacular traditional regalia. Outside the dance arena\, dozens of concessionaires will sell food\, Native American crafts and other items. \n\nNez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\nAlong the river\, participants camp during the pow wow\, many setting up teepees. The sight of teepees along the river after many years’ absence is wonderful. On the last day of the festival there is a friendship feast. The Native American community provides salmon\, deer and elk\, with locals bringing pot luck dishes. For the deer and elk\, a group of Indians come early and exercise their treaty rights by hunting for the game for the feast. A local committee prepares the fish and game. \nGeneral Information\nAll Drums Welcome & Paid\nFree camping\nRVs & Tents Welcome\nConcessions Welcome – Call office \nNez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow Mini-Gallery\n\n \nTamkaliks Celebration Powwow Event Schedule\nFriday\n7:00 p.m. Roll Call & Social Dancing\nMaster of Ceremonies: Thomas Morningowl & Fred Hill \nSaturday\n9:00 a.m. Horse Parade\n1:00 p.m. Roll Call\n7:00 p.m. Roll Call\nContest Dancing\nOwl Dance Special ($1000 Prize Money) \nSunday\n9:00 a.m. Washat Services\n12:00 p.m. Friendship Feast\n2:00 p.m. Roll Call\nChampionship Dancing \nLocation\nTamkaliks Powwow Ground\n70956 Whiskey Creek Road\nWallowa\, OR 97885\n(541) 886-3101 \nFor More Information: 541-886-3101 tamkaliks@gmail.com \nAbout the Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\nIn 1990\, Taz Conner\, a descendant of Old Chief Joseph (Tuekakas)\, was invited by the City of Wallowa to help them plan some kind of Native American festival in Wallowa. It was decided that a friendship potluck and powwow would be the most appropriate event. Since that time\, a group of ten to fifteen local volunteers have met\, planned\, and worked nearly year-round to conduct the event. During the powwow and potluck\, about forty to fifty local people and ten to twelve Native Americans help in putting it on. \n\nIn its first year\, 1990\, the Celebration Powwow was held in the high school gym and the potluck on the school grounds with about fifty participants. By the third year it had to be moved to a five acre site and set up our powwow and feast outside because it had grown too large for the gym. In 1998 the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Pow Wow and Friendship Potluck was renamed Tamkaliks (from where you can see the mountains) and moved to the new Wallowa Band Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center prospective site at the edge of the city of Wallowa.\nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\, always the third weekend in July at the Tamkaliks Powwow Ground in Wallowa\, Oregon. \nTags: Tamkaliks Celebration & Friendship Potluck\, Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow\, Tamkaliks Celebration Pow Wow\, Tamkaliks Celebration\, Tamkaliks Powwow\, Tamkaliks Pow Wow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow\, Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows & Other Native American Events

During their voyage of 1804 – 1806\, they led the “Corps of Northwestern Discovery” overland from St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River\, and back again. With no means for resupply\, the Corps – a U.S. Army unit of 31 men\, accompanied by Sacagawea and her infant child\, Jean Baptiste – needed to use a diverse combination of skills\, along with the right tools\, in order to survive. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove in July in Naselle\, Washington. \n \nTags: Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove\, Lewis and Clark Living History\, Knappton Cove Heritage Center\, Washington Living History\, Washington Rendezvous \nView other Washington Rendezvous & Other Related Living History Events\nView Other Living History Events

Captain Christian Huck was a Loyalist officer noted for his “particular dislike for the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in the South Carolina backcountry or ‘rebels’ as the British called them.” James Williamson’s 18th-century plantation is part of the 775-acres that comprises Historic Brattonsville. \nCaptain Christian Huck and his Loyalist troops were soundly defeated in the early morning hours of July 12\, 1780\, in a battle that took place at the home of William Bratton’s neighbor\, James Williamson. This victory inspired confidence for backcountry Patriots and began to turn the tide for success in winning Independence from King George. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t forget the next Battle of Hucks Defeat Reenactment in July at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells\, South Carolina. \nTags: Battle of Hucks Defeat Reenactment\, Hucks Defeat Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment\, South Carolina Revolutionary War Reenactment \n \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

It is also a chance for our non-Indian friends and families to take part in inter-tribal dancing as a Powwow is considered a cultural sharing event for all to learn about Native Americans and share ideas and information. \nThe circle is an important symbol to Indian cultures because it symbolizes the continuation of life. To the Native American people\, life is never ending\, like the circle. The Powwow brings the circle of the people closer together – closer to their community and their culture. Powwows today are still very much a part of the lives of modern Indian people. The Powwow season runs from March to September or later. Competiive singing and dancing for prize money is a fairly recent change in the traditiona Powwows. Only registered contestants can participate in the dancing contests.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Kahnawake Pow Wow at the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory only 10 miles south of Montreal\, Canada on the second weekend of July. \nTags: Kahnawake Pow Wow\, Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow\, Kahnawake Powwow\, Echoes of a Proud Nation Powwow\, Kahnawake Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow\, Montreal Powwow\, Montreal Pow Wow\, Canada Pow Wow\, Canada Powwow \nView other Canada Powwows

Join us to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. Over the course of the four days of the Green River Rendezvous\, vendors will fill parks with food\, live music\, beer\, entertainment and more to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. From visits to the Museum of the Mountain Man that bestows Jim Bridger’s rifle to the return of the “Green River Rendezvous” historical re-enactment and nightly rodeos\, cultural events will be in high supply. \n\nGreen River Rendezvous\nGreen River Rendezvous History\nSixteen Rendezvous were held during the years 1824-1840\, the height of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade when the beaver top hat was an essential part of every respectable urban man’s wardrobe. Of those 16 gatherings\, six were located at the Green River Rendezvous site\, eight miles west of Pinedale near Daniel\, Wyoming. It was at this site where famous mountain men like Jim Bridger\, Kit Carson\, Thomas Fitzpatrick carved their legends and opened the way for settlement of the West and supplied lustrous beaver pelts for the fashion industries of Europe and the eastern United States. Trappers\, travelers and Native American Indians all gathered to barter\, sell and gamble away the pelts and skins they’d gathered through the winter from hard\, dangerous labor. Guns\, jewelry\, supplies and other trade goods were also swapped. These original Rendezvous were the best opportunity to lay in supplies for the coming winter\, renew acquaintances\, tell tall tales\, drink\, laugh and get rowdy. \nGreen River Rendezvous Pageant\nSunday\, 1:00 pm at the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds\nThe live\, historical re-enactment has been a Pinedale area tradition since 1936 where community residents relive the original Green River Rendezvous of the 1800s. The rodeo grounds come alive with bearded\, buck skinned trappers and mountain men of long ago as they gallop\, holler\, fight\, boast\, and trade and barter goods. Representatives of coming civilization are also on the scene: Eliza Spaulding and Narcissa Whitman\, the first pioneer women to travel over South Pass\, stroll in once again. \nAmerican Mountain Man & Plains Indian Encampment\nThursday – Sunday at the Museum of the Mountain Man\nActivities\, tours\, and campfire talks on the historical significance of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade provides entertaining and educational Rendezvous events for all ages\, including free living history demonstrations of fur trapper and Plains Indian lifestyles\, field trips\, and children’s activities. \nPrairie of the Mass\nSunday\, 10:00 am at De Smet Monument\, Daniel\, Wyoming\nThe influence of Belgium-born Jesuit missionary\, Father De Smet is realized at morning’s calm to celebrate the first ever Mass on the prairie near the original Rendezvous site on July 5\, 1840 where thousands of Indians\, trappers and fur traders gathered. The De Smet Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28\, 1970. \nOriginal Green River Rendezvous Site\nTravel four miles north of Pinedale on US Highway 191\, turn left on Green River Road\, enter in at sign on right side of the road\, drive up a bit\, and walk on up. \nBy far\, the site of the 1833\, 1835\, 1836\, 1837\, 1839\, 1840 rendezvous is one of Pinedale’s most commanding scenes and was declared a U.S. National Historical Landmark in 1961. It’s no wonder six of the sixteen Rocky Mountain Rendezvous were located right here in the Upper Green River Valley where Horse Creek meets the Green. \nTrader’s Row\nLocated on the east end of Pine Street/US Highway 191. \n \nBuy and sell goods Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. It will have lots of rendezvous fun with activities such as the Candy Canon blasting throughout the day\, a bow shoot for all ages\, a frying pan toss\, and a “Tell a Tall Tale” contest. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Green River Rendezvous at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale\, Wyoming. \nTags: Green River Rendezvous\, Green River Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Wyoming Rendezvous\, Wyoming Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Wyoming Rendezvous

During the early morning hours of July 7\, 1777\, British General John Burgoyne’s army met the resistance and bravery of Americans for the first time in the Battle of Hubbardton. A massive British invasion from Canada chased the Continental Army from Mount Independence south to Hubbardton. \nThe British strategy was to continue to New York and divide New England from the rest of the colonies. On a grassy hill\, the New Englanders made their stand. While the British held the field and technically won the battle\, their losses were so heavy that they gave up chasing the Americans to tend to their casualties. The Battle of Hubbardton marked the beginning of the end for Burgoyne and his great plan. On August 16 he suffered a stunning blow at the Battle of Bennington. On October 17\, 1777\, after the battles of Saratoga\, he surrendered with his entire Army\, an action that was of great importance in persuading the French to enter the war on the side of the Americans. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton\, VT. \nTags: Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend\, Hubbardton Revolutionary War Reenactment\, Vermont Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events

After the Revolutionary War\, most Mohawks were forced to leave the Mohawk Valley in order to find refuge in other places. A few of them carried with them a prophecy that told of someday returning to their traditional homeland. That prophecy was passed down through the oral tradition from generation to generation until 1993 when a group of Mohawks left Akwesasne (St. Regis Mohawk Reservation) and returned to their ancestral home in the Mohawk Valley. They purchased a farm at auction and began the work of renovating buildings\, planting gardens\, and opening a native craft store. The community of Kanatsiohareke is working to revitalize the language\, culture\, and spirituality of the Mohawk by offering language classes\, workshops\, conferences\, and cultural exchange programs with many colleges and community groups. The community and this event are drug and alcohol-free. \nKanatsiohareke today is a small Mohawk/Kanienkahaka community on the north bank of the Mohawk River\, west of Fonda\, New York. The name means “The clean pots” Kanatsiohareke was created to be a “Carlisle Indian Boarding School in Reverse”\, teaching Mohawk language and culture. Located at the ancient homeland of the Kanienkehaka (Mohawk)\, it was re-established in September 1993 under the leadership of Thomas R. Porter (Sakokwenionkwas-“The One Who Wins”). The community must raise their own revenue and frequently hold cultural presentations\, workshops\, and academic events\, including an annual Strawberry Festival. A craft shop on site features genuine handmade Native crafts from all over Turtle Island (North America). \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Strawberry Festival the last weekend of June at the Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community in Fonda\, New York. \n \nTags: Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Strawberry Festival\, Kanatsiohareke Strawberry Festival\, Mohawk Strawberry Festival \nView Other Powwows & Native American Events in New York

Almost every native community in this part of the North America has a gathering once a year which is known by most as pow wow. This is a time when we come together to dance and to sing. It is a social event practiced by the Anishinaabe people. Sometimes dancers and singers travel for many days to attend Jiingtamok. Sometimes this is the only time that some families and friends see one another. We really do not know how old this celebration is\, but we look forward to it every year at the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Pow Wow. \n\nLittle River Band of Ottawa Indians Pow Wow | LBROI Jiingtamok\nToday\, we have two types of Jiingtamok (powwows)\, one is the traditional and the other is the competition. Traditional Jiingtamok is the oldest form and competition is relatively new. Competition is where dancers and singers compete with one another for prize money. Some dancers and singers have made this lifestyle a career because they are excellent at what they do and take great pride in it. Many styles of dancing and singing are shared at both types of gatherings.\nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nGrand Entries\nSaturday at 12:00 & 7:00\nSunday 12:00 \nHead Staff\nHost Drum: Dusty Bear\nCo-Host: Suthern Straight\nInvited Drums: Painted Rock\, Red Cedar\, War Party\nHead Veteran: Frank Lewis\nMC: Shannon Martin & Brian Loney\nArena Director: Mike Medawls\nSpecial Judge: Walker Stonefish\nPrincess Judge: Cicilee Chivls\nFirst 3 Show-Up Drums to Register ONSITE will receive an honorarium. Now this tradition is a vital part of our culture again and is welcomed by many nations in North America. \n \nWe have faith in our children that they will never allow what has happened in the past to happen again. If we continue to teach our children our ways and our language\, we can never loose it. If we take the time to show and practice our ways and our language with our children\, they will in turn take the time in their lives to do the same. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Annual Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Pow Wow (Jiingtamok in Manistee\, Michigan. \nTags: Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Pow Wow\, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Powwow\, LRBOI Powwow\, LRBOI Pow Wow\, Michigan Powwow\, Michigan Pow Wow \nView Other Michigan Pow Wows

All re-enactors from the French & Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade are welcome. \n\nMille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\nSince 1993\, the Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous has been held in late June in a rolling field in the woods south of Mille Lacs Lake. The event produces a bloom of white canvas in the form of tents in the style of 200 years ago. The rendezvous has become a highly regarded living history event within Minnesota. It’s a regular destination for up to 150 living history participants living in a frontier city of 55 to 75 primitive camps\, and for many\, a yearly reunion. \nA big part of the experience is the camaraderie among the re-enactors\, known as voyageurs and buckskinners\, while the other is the passion of demonstrating skills and crafts of 200 years ago to kids of all ages. The fur trade era is well connected to the Mille Lacs area\, and there were multiple trading posts\, trails and portages present. And both Aitkin and Morrison Counties were named after fur traders. \nThe Rendezvous Camp is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.\, with a donation needed for entry by those over 10 years old. The location is six miles south of Isle or 16 miles north of Ogilvie on Hwy. 47\, then one mile west on Red Road. \nThe sights\, sounds and smells of 200 years ago come alive once again\, with the opportunity to bring home some Americana of the time that the participants make and sell. There will be food\, blacksmiths\, woodcarvers\, woodworkers\, ropemakers\, music\, a storyteller and surprises. It’s never known just who might show up. The event kicks off with a 21-gun national salute at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Impromptu skills demonstrations and music are ongoing throughout the event by many artisans and primitive campers. \nThis event has been presented each year since 1993 by the Mille Lacs Lake Historical society of Isle\, Minnesota. It originally was planned to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the organization\, and became an annual event. \nHours\n9am-6 pm Saturday and 9am-4pm on Sunday \nPublic Admission:\n$8.00 at gate\nFREE to those 10 & under\n9:00 – 6:00 Saturday / 9:00 – 4:00 Sunday\nPrimitive Camping: $30.00 per site \nFolk Arts Site:\n$30.00 (10’ x 10’ space) \nNon-Primitive Tent & R.V. At the Fort Dobbs Militia Muster\, living history interpreters will recreate an 18th century militia muster during a free event at the Fort Dobbs Historic Site. The presentation on Saturday and Sunday will feature musket firing\, cooking and other parts of military camp life. Visitors will be invited to join the ranks and learn marching drills each afternoon. \n\nFort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment\nMilitary training was part of life for the citizen soldiers\, and the muster re-enactment will portray residents of “Fourth Creek Settlement\,” as Statesville then was known. All males ages 16-60 were required by law to serve in North Carolina’s militia during the French and Indian War. These civilians would gather at appointed times during the year to practice military drill and could be used to quickly form an army for defense at times of invasion. Historic interpreters representing the Rowan County militia will offer on-going displays of military camp life\, as well as featured musket and cannon firing demonstrations. \nFort Dobbs preserves and interprets the history of the fort and North Carolina’s role in the French and Indian War. It is the only state historic site associated with the war\, which lasted from 1754 to 1763. \nAdmission: $2.00 ($2.00 donation suggested) \nHours:\nSaturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.\nSunday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nReenactors: Anyone wishing to participate in the Fort Dobbs War for Empire Reenactment needs to register. From US 21\, turn left onto Fort Dobbs Road. From NC 115\, veer right onto S. Chipley Ford Road\, then turn right onto Fort Dobbs Road. \nFor More Information: Call 704-873-5882; Email: info@fortdobbs.org \n \nHistory of Fort Dobbs\nFort Dobbs was the only permanent frontier provincial fort in the colony of North Carolina. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. We hope\, with your support\, to have Fort Dobbs open as a living history exhibit on a grand scale by early 2019![/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville\, North Carolina. \nTags: Fort Dobbs Militia Muster\, Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment\, Militia Muster\, French and Indian War Reenactment\, French & Indian War Reenactment \nView other War of 1812 Encampments & Reenactments
