Following the battle\, a reenactment of the historic Hanger amputation will take place in Sutler Row on Main Street. \nAbout the actual Battle of Philippi\nThe Battle of Philippi formed part of the Western Virginia Campaign of the American Civil War\, and was fought in and around Philippi\, Virginia (now West Virginia) on June 3\, 1861. On May 28\, 1861\, Col. George Porterfield and his Confederate troops arrived in Philippi\, where they camped or were quartered in town. Neighbors and families were already divided on the question of secession. There were at least 750\, if not upwards of 2\,000 troops. At daylight on June 3\, two columns of Union forces\, with perhaps 3\,000 men\, arrived from Grafton under the command of Col. Ebenezer Dumont and Col. Benjamin Kelley. A Union victory\, it was the first organized land action of the war\, though generally viewed as a skirmish rather than a battle. \nMistaking a pistol shot by a Mrs. Humpreys on the hill above the town as a signal to start the battle\, the Union troops fired on the Confederates with two brass six-pound Napoleon cannons. The Confederates routed to a big rock south of town and departed in good order to Belington and ultimately to Beverly. \nThe Original Blue and Gray Renuion\nOn June 3\, 1911 the first “Home Coming Week” ever held in Barbour County of the “Blue and Gray Soldiers” who participated in the 1861 battle was held. The program included speeches\, band concerts\, “public talks by Old Soldiers”\, entertainment\, fireworks\, parachute jumps\, parades\, a hot-air balloon ascension\, and a “Sham Battle conducted by the State Militia.” In 1988\, the City of Philippi published a “Call to Arms” to plan for an annual Blue & Gray Reunion to begin the first week of June\, 1989. \nBlue and Gray Reunion – Battle of Philippi Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nToday’s reunion includes Sutlers and crafts tents\, a parade\, encampments for re-enactors from both sides of the war\, artillery and small arms demonstrations\, a choir concert\, Civil War Ball\, and of course\, a re-enactment of the first land battle of the Civil War. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nLocation: Downtown Philippi\, WV \nFor More Information\nMail: PO Box 911\, Philippi\, WV 26416\nPhone: 304-457-3773\nEmail: information@blueandgrayreunion.org\nPhilippi area contact: CVB at 304-457-3700 \nBlue and Gray Reeunion Featured Events (subject to change)\n(Check daily schedules for day and time) \n\nHorse and Buggy Parade\nWalking History (for adults) joining Kids’ Day\nPickin’ Porch – all weekend on Courthouse Square\nOpening Ceremonies – Thursday\nGrand Opening and Blue & Gray Community Choir\nHorse and Buggy Parade\nKids’ Day/Walking History – Friday\n25-30 Learning Stations\nVisit with General Stonewall Jackson\nGrand Parade\n5K Race\nKayak and Stand Up Paddle Board Races\nPie Contest at the Gazebo\nCivil War Ball\nConfederate and Union Camps open for the public\nReenactment – First Land Battle of Civil War\nReenactment-Hanger Amputation\nCrafters Park and Food Vendors on Courthouse Square\nLive entertainment – at the Gazebo all weekend; SUMMARY:Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park
DESCRIPTION:2019 Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe 33rd Annual Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park on May 18-19\, 2019 in Hebron brings 18th-century history in Indiana to life. Peek into the lives of those who would have lived or traded along the waterways of the Midwest more than 250 years ago when the marshes were a source of valuable furs desired by merchant traders to take back to Europe. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park welcomes visitors into encampments of French Canadian voyageurs\, French and British militia\, civilians and settlers\, and Native Americans. Artisans will demonstrate some traditional crafts of those times. The nearly 100 costumed reenactors adhere to details of the time period in their costumes and camps\, according to Robertson\, and share that sense of history with visitors to the event. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park is a family friendly event with lots of fun and interactive activities for the kids. Visit the Children’s Trading Post to pick up a scavenger hunt list. This list is not items to collect\, but rather items to look for at the event. Talk to anybody in costume to get information on the list item you’re looking for and get them to sign the form. When leaving\, the child may bring the completed sheet back to the trading post to trade for an item. The voyageur rendezvous is fun for all ages\, and it’s immersive — sights\, sounds\, smells and activities of that historic period. \nHours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday\nAdmission: $5.00 with children 5 and younger admitted free \nVoyageur Rendezvous Highlights\nEvent Highlights include Opening and Closing Ceremonies • Arrival of Voyageurs by canoe • Trade Session with the Native Americans • Storytelling • Tomahawk Throw • Fashion Show • Hot Food\, Cold Sarsaparilla and more. Saturday’s scheduled activities include canoe “bobber races” and storytelling. While on Sunday there will be a period clothing fashion show\, following which the public will be invited to join in historic dances\, accompanied by the fife and drum corps. There will also be historic games and make-and-take projects at the trading post\, tomahawk throwing for older children\, and fife and drum music on both days. Food will be available at the site and there will also be a vendor of period items. \nDaily Opening Ceremony\nAn opening ceremony begins the historical reenactment festivities each day at 10:30 a.m. and presents some perspective to the event. The British military\, French military and civilian re-enactors come from the camps and the Native Americans arrive. They meet at the flag pole. One of the re-enactors holds up a wampum belt in a gesture of welcome. Then three flags are raised: the French\, British and historical American flag of the time as the fife and drum corps plays the song of each nation from that historical period. A little later\, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday\, the voyageurs arrive. Their landings are another highlight of the event as they paddle in with their big canoes loaded with goods. \nLocation\nGrand Kankakee Marsh County Park\n21690 Range Line Road\nHebron\, IN 46341\n(219) 552-0033 \nFor More Information\nLake County Parks & Rec: Call 219-769-7275; Email info@lakecountyparks.com \n \nWho were these Voyageurs?\nTo equate the voyageurs of the fur trade era in the Great Lakes area to something today\, consider all the trucks on today’s roads. When voyageurs plied the area waters this was the wilderness. The rivers then were like the highways today\, and were very important to the history and the development and the economic growth in the area. \nHistorically\, the voyageurs landed and exchanged gifts with the natives first\, before any trading. They might spend a whole day exchanging gifts\, generally with the men\, after which most of the trading would be done with the women. The natives had the furs and the number one item the voyageurs offered was textiles. \nWhat is the Difference in a Mountain Man Rendezvous and Voyageur Rendezvous?\n \nSchool Day: Friday\nAdvance reservation required.\nMorning tour time slot: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.\nAfternoon tour time slot: Noon – 2 p.m.\nMinimum (20 students); Maximum (140 students) per time slot\n$2 per person\, including chaperones and teachers; $20 minimum\nReservations and deposit required at least ten business days in advance\nAppropriate for 4th – 6th grade curriculum\nReserve your time slot now. The Fur Trade Era is bustling with activity when you arrive. Your students will see how the French Voyageurs played an important role in early commerce and trade right here in Northwest Indiana. Native Americans traded furs while the Voyageurs\, British\, and French clashed over ownership of the land. There is plenty for students to see\, hear and learn. They will feel like they just spent a day in the 18th century. You too\, will enjoy jumping back into history! The tour is completely outside\, so please remind your students to dress for the weather. Upon registration\, teachers will be sent a confirmation packet\, complete with pre or post activity sheets. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park in Hebron\, Indiana on the third weekend in May. \nTags: Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park\, Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park Voyageur Rendezvous\, Indiana Voyageur Rendezvous\, Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other Voyageur Rendezvous or Encampments

The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, Florida. \nTags: Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\, Fort Zachary Taylor Living History Weekend\, Ft Taylor Living History Weekend \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. Boat launching ramps are available off site. The Historic Area hosts many seasonal events\, such as Fort Loudoun Garrison Weekends with reenactors\, an 18th Century Trade Faire\, and student field trips. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Spring Fort Loudoun Garrison Weekend at Fort Loudoun State Park in Vonore\, Tennessee. \nTags: Spring Fort Loudoun Garrison Weekend\, Fort Loudoun Garrison Weekend\, French & Indian War Encampment\, French & Indian War Reenactment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events

It pitted two groups of North Carolinians against each other. There were approximately 2\,000 backcountry farmers called Regulators and around 1\,000 militia troops (citizen soldiers) under the command of Royal Governor William Tryon involved in the two-hour battle. Having officers\, a battle plan\, and more weaponry (which included eight cannon)\, the royal governor and his men easily defeated the ill-prepared Regulators. Governor Tryon reported that nine of his men were killed and sixty-one wounded in the military engagement. Although undetermined\, the Regulator casualties would end up being much greater. It is possible that as many as 100 Regulators may have been killed. The Battle of Alamance officially ended the so-called Regulator movement that began in the 1760’s.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nUnfair taxation\, dishonest and corrupt government officials\, and the lack of representation were all serious concerns of the Regulators. In most cases\, government officials (sheriffs\, clerks of court\, registers of deeds\, etc.) attained their positions through appointments by men in power\, not by elections involving the citizenry of the colony. The Regulators sought a better regulation of these government officials and more control of their own affairs. Geographical\, social\, and economic factors all had effects on the Regulator movement. \nAlthough the Battle of Alamance was not the first official battle of the American Revolution\, it did provide some valuable insight for revolutionaries as discontent with British rule continued to increase. For the approximately 6\,000 Regulators who took the oath of allegiance to the Crown\, many of them remained loyal to England during the War for Independence. Some of the militia serving under Governor Tryon\, who gained valuable military experience at the battle\, would end up fighting against the British. Richard Caswell\, the first man to serve as governor of the state of North Carolina\, was one of those to serve in the militia and later become an integral part of this country’s independence movement.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Alamance Reenactment: Fight for the Backcountry in May at the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site in Burlington\, North Carolina. \nTags: Battle of Alamance Reenactment\, lamance Battle Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

Manito Ahbee\, an Ojibway word means\, “where the Creator sits.” The site is recognized and honoured by Indigenous peoples across North America as a sacred place for all people. The name of the province\, Manitoba\, is itself derived from the name of this sacred site. The festival represents an opportunity for Manitobans and visitors alike to experience the festival as a celebration for all people. Each year on the 3rd weekend in May\, hundreds of Colonial\, British\, and Native reenactors converge at the re-created Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals to relive the days when America’s first frontier was the land beyond the blue ridge. Several Revolutionary War living history units will be in attendance and will make the 18th century come to life during the weekend. \n\nSiege at Ft. Watauga\nThe Siege at Fort Watauga is a live retelling of the Cherokee attack brought on the settlers of the Watauga valley in the summer of 1776. At Sycamore Shoals\, Fort Watauga offered protection to nearly 200 settlers during a two-week siege led by Cherokee War Chief\, Old Abram\, and 300 warriors. Numerous other individuals also participate in the event portraying many 18th century walks of life including Cherokee Natives\, Backcountry Hunters\, Farmers\, Housewives\, African Slaves\, Commoners and Gentry. \nImmerse yourself in 18th century frontier life as you witness daily aspects of colonial culture. Take advantage of colonial merchants selling period wares in “Sutler’s Row”. See the clash of two cultures as the attack on fort Watauga is recreated both days. \nBring the entire family to the Siege at Fort Watauga and see how your ancestors played a crucial role in our region’s history and in the formation of our nation. Hear the rattle of muskets\, smell the campfire smoke\, and see the 18th century come to life at the Siege of Ft. Watauga. This event is sponsored by The Washington County Regiment of North Carolina Militia and The Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. \nSiege at Fort Watauga Mini-Gallery\n\n \nAlso during the event take advantage of colonial merchants selling period wares in “Sutler’s Row”. Scaife\, a noted historian and author of Campaign for Atlanta. Both Saturday and Sunday’s battles will be held on the same field but with a different scenario – and maybe a surprise or two. Since 1999\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment has become famous for its aggressive battles and surprise tacticals. Extensive recreations of breastworks and Van den Corput’s redoubt also await your visit. \nReenactors\nBoth Federal and Confederate camps are located in reenactor-friendly sites within easy reach of the sutlers\, vendors\, and reenactor parking. Both encampments will be located close to the respective 1864 lines of battle. Firewood\, bedding straw\, and horse hay will be provided. For campaign-style reenactors\, camping will be permitted in or near the breastworks\, but all amenities will have to be secured from the main static camp areas. On Sunday morning\, a non-denominational church service will be conducted on-site at the Social Fly for all reenactors. \nVisitors\nVarious civilian activities will be conducted during the Battle of Reseca Reenactment. Period sutlers\, authentic civilian and refugee camps\, and modern concessions will be available. On Saturday morning\, all reenactors are encouraged to attend the Memorial Service at the Resaca Confederate Cemetery located at the south end of the farm. The cemetery is the final resting place of 450 soldiers and is one of the first two such Confederate Cemeteries established in our nation. Later Saturday evening\, a period social and dance will be held for all reenactors\, with period music. \n \nSchool Tours\nDuring Friday morning prior to the Battle of Reseca Reenactment\, free school tours will be provided for our area youth. This educational service is for all of our area public and private schools\, home schools\, church youth groups\, and scout troops who would enjoy learning more about the American Civil War. Learn More \nShuttle Transportation\nThe Gordon County Antique Tractor Club will provide free transportation from the spectator parking area to the battle site each day. They will also be available throughout the event to assist stranded motorists. \nOther Reseca Civil War Sites\nWhile in the area\, be sure to visit the new Resaca Battlefield Historic Site that is open now on weekends. This important battlefield is located just off of I-75 at Exit 320 just miles from the reenactment site. The new battlefield park features hiking trails and interpretive markers. A new visitor center will also be opening soon. \nAlso while in the area\, be sure to visit the Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site just yards from downtown Resaca. This historic fort was part of the defensive earthworks guarding the river and town of Resaca during the 1864 battle. After the battle\, it was occupied by Federal troops. \nIMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS \n\nThe main reenactor parking has been moved to a new location for your convenience and for a much shorter walk to camp. A trail head at the back of this area leads to the CS Campaign camp. A new foot bridge over the creek connects the Campaigner area and the static CS Camp\, allowing easier access to the Sutlers.\nDue to liability issues\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment Event Staff will not allow reenactors OR the public the personal use of any type of recreational four-wheelers\, off road motorcycles\, golf carts or similar type vehicles to operate on site. Transportation will be provided to and from the spectator and handicapped parking areas.\nDue to troop camp locations\, no MODERN CAMPING will be available for RV vehicles\, campers or modern tentage\, etc. Modern camping is available at the KOA Campground (10 minutes away) located just off I-75 (Exit 315 – Red Bud Road) at 2523 Red Bud Road N.E. The phone number is: 706-629-7511.\nThe Boy Scout camp is available upon advanced approval.\nNo non-reenactors\, except for medical emergency personnel\, will be permitted past the spectator line during the battles.\n\nResaca Battlefield Preservation\nA portion of the Battle of Resaca Reenactment proceeds geso towards the preservation of the Resaca battlefield land. To become more involved in the preservation efforts\, contact the Friends of Resaca Battlefield\, non-profit organization dedicated to that task. Learn More \nAbout the Host: Georgia Division Reenactors Association\, Inc.\nThe Battle of Resaca Reenactment is hosted annually by the many volunteers of the\nGeorgia Division Reenactors Association\, Inc. Drummers Call\, a gathering of select fife and drum corps from around the country\, is a spring ritual at Colonial Williamsburg. These fife and drum ensembles will delight the thousands who come out for the performances with music and impressions ranging from Colonial America through the turn of the 20th century. \n\nDrummers Call at Colonial Williamsburg\nCelebrate the traditions of 18th-century military music and explore the important roles played by fifers and drummers. Fife and drum corps units from across the United States join the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums to perform grand displays of period music throughout the weekend. You’ll want to respond to the Drummers Call\, a call beaten by the duty fifer and drummer to mass the regimental musicians for the playing of ceremonies such as Reveille\, Retreat\, and Tattoo. \nAdmission: General Park Admission\, No Event Ticket Required \nHours: Daily 9:00 am – 5:00 pm \nLocation\nColonial Williamsburg (performances in various venues)\n101-A Visitor Center Drive\nWilliamsburg\, VA 23185\n(888) 965-7254 \nDrummers Call Participant Registration\nNOTE: ALL Drummers Call participants are required to pre-register for this event. By hosting an event such as Drummers Call\, Colonial Williamsburg is able to display and educate its guests about the importance of Fife and Drum units from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The annual event has become one that welcomes new units each year\, while relying on a “core” of Corps to participate. \nWhat is a Military “Tattoo”?\nThe Tattoo was originally a piece played by the fifers and drummers of military units to announce the time to return to camp for the evening. Loosely translated from a Dutch phrase\, “Turn the Taps To”\, meaning the taverns were to close for the evening (turn their taps off). \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Drummers Call at Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Drummers Call at Colonial Williamsburg\, Williamsburg Fife and drum corps muster\, revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events

Everyone will have the chance to witness firsthand folklife as it was on the Texas frontier. The Sam Houston Memorial Museum’s grounds are transformed into a bustling Texas frontier settlement where you can watch historical reenactments and demonstrators\, listen to live music\, sip some homemade root beer\, share a bag of kettle corn\, shop for crafts or simply stroll the homestead where Sam and Margaret Houston lived and the place their children played. \n\nGeneral Sam Houston Folk Festival\nThe Sam Houston Folk Festival is a tip of the Texian’s hat to Sam Houston; were it not for the general’s incredible victory at the Battle of San Jacinto\, Texas independence might not have been secured. So let’s celebrate the Lone Star State’s historic past with re-enactors in full costume and regalia (look for famous scout Deaf Smith)\, cultural exhibits\, Sahawe Indian dancers and retro demonstrations about rustic life on the frontier: cannon and rifle fire\, blacksmithing\, glass-blowing and woodworking. \nEach year\, visitors from all over the Greater Houston area and surrounding school districts flock to Huntsville for the annual Gen.
