Experience North Carolina’s internal power struggle on the eve of revolution! On May 16\, 1771 when a group of rebellious backcountry farmers who called themselves “Regulators” met the loyalist militia of Governor William Tryon in open battle. “Fight for the Backcountry” will feature a recreation of the Battle of Alamance\, and will explore life in the backcountry in the early 1770s\, as the American colonies stood on the brink of revolution. \n\nBattle of Alamance Reenactment\nThe weekend program at the Battle of Alamance Reenactment will feature a battle reenactment\, military drills\, artillery and musket drills\, and an audience with Colonial Gov. William Tryon. There will be demonstrations from cooks\, tradespeople and a colonial era surgeon. The Sons of the American Revolution will share a Patriots Day Commemoration Ceremony. There will be an Anglican Church service Sunday morning\, denoting the powerful Church of England. \nThe Battle of Alamance Reenactment recaptures the scene of the conflict that involved almost 2\,000 backcountry farmers facing 1\,000 royal militia at the Battle of Alamance of May 16\, 1771. Known as Regulators because of a desire to regulate public officials\, the colonists were poorly trained and outgunned. The Regulator uprising was crushed\, but was a preamble to the Revolutionary War only five years later. \nAdmission\nAdults $2\nChildren under 12 FREE \nHours\nSaturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nSunday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nReenactment Participants\nParticipants must Register\nParticipants Impression Guidelines \nBattle of Alamance Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nLocation\nAlamance Battleground State Historic Site\n5803 S NC Highway 62\nBurlington\, NC 27215 \nAlamance Battleground is within the Division of State Historic Sites of the N.C. It pitted two groups of North Carolinians against each other. There were approximately 2\,000 backcountry farmers called Regulators and around 1\,000 militia troops (citizen soldiers) under the command of Royal Governor William Tryon involved in the two-hour battle. Having officers\, a battle plan\, and more weaponry (which included eight cannon)\, the royal governor and his men easily defeated the ill-prepared Regulators. Governor Tryon reported that nine of his men were killed and sixty-one wounded in the military engagement. Although undetermined\, the Regulator casualties would end up being much greater. It is possible that as many as 100 Regulators may have been killed. The Battle of Alamance officially ended the so-called Regulator movement that began in the 1760’s.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nUnfair taxation\, dishonest and corrupt government officials\, and the lack of representation were all serious concerns of the Regulators. In most cases\, government officials (sheriffs\, clerks of court\, registers of deeds\, etc.) attained their positions through appointments by men in power\, not by elections involving the citizenry of the colony. The Regulators sought a better regulation of these government officials and more control of their own affairs. Geographical\, social\, and economic factors all had effects on the Regulator movement. \nAlthough the Battle of Alamance was not the first official battle of the American Revolution\, it did provide some valuable insight for revolutionaries as discontent with British rule continued to increase. For the approximately 6\,000 Regulators who took the oath of allegiance to the Crown\, many of them remained loyal to England during the War for Independence. Some of the militia serving under Governor Tryon\, who gained valuable military experience at the battle\, would end up fighting against the British. Richard Caswell\, the first man to serve as governor of the state of North Carolina\, was one of those to serve in the militia and later become an integral part of this country’s independence movement.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Alamance Reenactment: Fight for the Backcountry in May at the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site in Burlington\, North Carolina. \nTags: Battle of Alamance Reenactment\, lamance Battle Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

Several Revolutionary War living history units will be in attendance and will make the 18th century come to life during the weekend. \n\nSiege at Ft. Watauga\nThe Siege at Fort Watauga is a live retelling of the Cherokee attack brought on the settlers of the Watauga valley in the summer of 1776. At Sycamore Shoals\, Fort Watauga offered protection to nearly 200 settlers during a two-week siege led by Cherokee War Chief\, Old Abram\, and 300 warriors. Numerous other individuals also participate in the event portraying many 18th century walks of life including Cherokee Natives\, Backcountry Hunters\, Farmers\, Housewives\, African Slaves\, Commoners and Gentry. \nImmerse yourself in 18th century frontier life as you witness daily aspects of colonial culture. Take advantage of colonial merchants selling period wares in “Sutler’s Row”. Scaife\, a noted historian and author of Campaign for Atlanta. Both Saturday and Sunday’s battles will be held on the same field but with a different scenario – and maybe a surprise or two. Since 1999\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment has become famous for its aggressive battles and surprise tacticals. Extensive recreations of breastworks and Van den Corput’s redoubt also await your visit. \nReenactors\nBoth Federal and Confederate camps are located in reenactor-friendly sites within easy reach of the sutlers\, vendors\, and reenactor parking. Both encampments will be located close to the respective 1864 lines of battle. Firewood\, bedding straw\, and horse hay will be provided. For campaign-style reenactors\, camping will be permitted in or near the breastworks\, but all amenities will have to be secured from the main static camp areas. On Sunday morning\, a non-denominational church service will be conducted on-site at the Social Fly for all reenactors. \nVisitors\nVarious civilian activities will be conducted during the Battle of Reseca Reenactment. Period sutlers\, authentic civilian and refugee camps\, and modern concessions will be available. On Saturday morning\, all reenactors are encouraged to attend the Memorial Service at the Resaca Confederate Cemetery located at the south end of the farm. The cemetery is the final resting place of 450 soldiers and is one of the first two such Confederate Cemeteries established in our nation. Later Saturday evening\, a period social and dance will be held for all reenactors\, with period music. \n \nSchool Tours\nDuring Friday morning prior to the Battle of Reseca Reenactment\, free school tours will be provided for our area youth. This educational service is for all of our area public and private schools\, home schools\, church youth groups\, and scout troops who would enjoy learning more about the American Civil War. Learn More \nShuttle Transportation\nThe Gordon County Antique Tractor Club will provide free transportation from the spectator parking area to the battle site each day. They will also be available throughout the event to assist stranded motorists. \nOther Reseca Civil War Sites\nWhile in the area\, be sure to visit the new Resaca Battlefield Historic Site that is open now on weekends. This important battlefield is located just off of I-75 at Exit 320 just miles from the reenactment site. The new battlefield park features hiking trails and interpretive markers. A new visitor center will also be opening soon. \nAlso while in the area\, be sure to visit the Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site just yards from downtown Resaca. This historic fort was part of the defensive earthworks guarding the river and town of Resaca during the 1864 battle. After the battle\, it was occupied by Federal troops. \nIMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS \n\nThe main reenactor parking has been moved to a new location for your convenience and for a much shorter walk to camp. A trail head at the back of this area leads to the CS Campaign camp. A new foot bridge over the creek connects the Campaigner area and the static CS Camp\, allowing easier access to the Sutlers.\nDue to liability issues\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment Event Staff will not allow reenactors OR the public the personal use of any type of recreational four-wheelers\, off road motorcycles\, golf carts or similar type vehicles to operate on site. Transportation will be provided to and from the spectator and handicapped parking areas.\nDue to troop camp locations\, no MODERN CAMPING will be available for RV vehicles\, campers or modern tentage\, etc. Modern camping is available at the KOA Campground (10 minutes away) located just off I-75 (Exit 315 – Red Bud Road) at 2523 Red Bud Road N.E. The phone number is: 706-629-7511.\nThe Boy Scout camp is available upon advanced approval.\nNo non-reenactors\, except for medical emergency personnel\, will be permitted past the spectator line during the battles.\n\nResaca Battlefield Preservation\nA portion of the Battle of Resaca Reenactment proceeds geso towards the preservation of the Resaca battlefield land. To become more involved in the preservation efforts\, contact the Friends of Resaca Battlefield\, non-profit organization dedicated to that task. Fife and drum corps units from across the United States join the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums to perform grand displays of period music throughout the weekend. By hosting an event such as Drummers Call\, Colonial Williamsburg is able to display and educate its guests about the importance of Fife and Drum units from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The annual event has become one that welcomes new units each year\, while relying on a “core” of Corps to participate. \nWhat is a Military “Tattoo”?\nThe Tattoo was originally a piece played by the fifers and drummers of military units to announce the time to return to camp for the evening. Loosely translated from a Dutch phrase\, “Turn the Taps To”\, meaning the taverns were to close for the evening (turn their taps off). \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Drummers Call at Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Drummers Call at Colonial Williamsburg\, Williamsburg Fife and drum corps muster\, revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events

The three-day event offers a variety of historical and cultural experiences for every member of the family. Everyone will have the chance to witness firsthand folklife as it was on the Texas frontier. The Sam Houston Memorial Museum’s grounds are transformed into a bustling Texas frontier settlement where you can watch historical reenactments and demonstrators\, listen to live music\, sip some homemade root beer\, share a bag of kettle corn\, shop for crafts or simply stroll the homestead where Sam and Margaret Houston lived and the place their children played. \n\nGeneral Sam Houston Folk Festival\nThe Sam Houston Folk Festival is a tip of the Texian’s hat to Sam Houston; were it not for the general’s incredible victory at the Battle of San Jacinto\, Texas independence might not have been secured. So let’s celebrate the Lone Star State’s historic past with re-enactors in full costume and regalia (look for famous scout Deaf Smith)\, cultural exhibits\, Sahawe Indian dancers and retro demonstrations about rustic life on the frontier: cannon and rifle fire\, blacksmithing\, glass-blowing and woodworking. \nEach year\, visitors from all over the Greater Houston area and surrounding school districts flock to Huntsville for the annual Gen. Sam Houston Folk Festival on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. \nTexas State Knife & Tomahawk Championship\nGeneral Sam Houston Folk Festival admission includes the Annual Texas State Knife & Tomahawk Championship held on the Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds. Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous is a historical reenactment\, sponsored by the Saukville Historical Society and held the third weekend in May. The event focuses on Wisconsin’s Fur Trade Era\, from 1750 to 1840\, and visitors can expect to speak with and observe historical reenactors representing the various inhabitants of our State prior to statehood\, including voyageurs; military groups representing the French and Indian War\, the American Revolution\, and the War of 1812; First Nations representatives and reenactors; and\, tradespeople such as blacksmiths\, tinsmiths\, weavers\, and more. \nStep out of the 21st century for the day and enjoy the sights and sounds of mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth century Wisconsin at the Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous! \nAdmission\n$5.00 Adults (Saturday & Sunday)\n$3.00 Students (Friday School Day)\n$4.00 Armed Forces\, Veterans\, adults 65 and older\n$2.00 per child under 18\nChildren ages 2 or younger are free \nHours\nFriday School Day 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\n$5/per adult \n \nFor More Information: Email info@crossroadsrendezvous.org \nLocation\nPeninsula Park\nE Clay Street\nSaukville\, WI 53080 \nFor More Information: Phone (262) 288-1839 info@crossroadsrendezvous.org \nParking\nThere is no parking at Peninsula Park\, and close street parking is very limited. This experience is primarily geared towards students in 4th through 8th grade\, but is open to all ages\, as well as home schooling groups. Fill out the online form and we will send out your information packet. \nHistorical Participants\nParticipation in the Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous is by invitation only. Participation in the past events does not guarantee your invitation to the event. Our focus for the Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous is the Fur Trade in Wisconsin from 1750 through 1840; priority will be given to reenactors\, presenters\, sutlers\, and entertainers who are excellent demonstrators and educators\, and who are willing to participate in our School Day on Friday. Participants will be asked to provide photos and links\, or a statement\, describing your individual or group presentation; we are looking for dedication to historical accuracy\, and a thorough knowledge of the time period and the people you are representing. If you are interested in participating in the event\, please fill out the contact form below. In the comment section\, please add your individual or group description\, and any links\, if applicable. If you meet our requirements\, registration forms will be sent to you. Only individuals who have sent in registration will be admitted to the event. Participant Registration \nVolunteers\nWe are looking to work with local Civic and Non-Profit groups to provide food\, beverages\, and services at the event\, but individuals are welcome\, as well. Historical attire will be required and facilitated\, and booth space will be provided to nonprofits. This is an excellent fundraising or service opportunity. If you are interested\, please contact us! \nHistory of the Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous\nSince 1988\, the Saukville Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving\, recording and\nmaintaining the historical information and antiquities of the Saukville Area\, as well as promoting the awareness of the area’s historical culture\, to develop an understanding of\, and pride in\, our past\, and to recognize its importance in the future. \nFrom 1991 to 2006\, the SHS ran the Crossroads Rendezvous historical reenactment at Peninsula Park every third weekend in May\, bringing thousands of visitors to Saukville and providing an incredibly unique educational experience for area children and their families. Revenue from the event funded the restoration of the 1912 Firehouse\, located on Mill Street in Saukville\, that the Historical Society calls home. \nIn the fall of 2017\, Mary Boyle and Sara Dahmen\, two historical reenactors from Port Washington\, decided it was time to bring the Crossroads Rendezvous back. Together\, with their families and the Saukville Historical Society\, they are excited to introduce a new generation of visitors to the magic of living history and the important part “the crossroads” of Saukville played in the history of our community\, State\, and Country. Join us at the Crossroads this May! \nHistory of the Crossroads\nThe Township and Village of Saukville are located at the ancient crossroads of two major American Indian trails: the old Decorah Road and the old Green Bay Road. The Decorah Road became the present-day Wisconsin Highway 33\, and the old Green Bay Road became the road that is now part of the southern portion of Ozaukee County Highway O and the northern portion of Ozaukee County Highway W. The Indian trails crossed where the Milwaukee River makes an unusual bending loop\, forming a unique river peninsula.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe Green Bay Trail\, which had a great impact on the settlement of southeast Wisconsin and the State\, overall\, connected Fort Howard at Green Bay with Fort Dearborn in Chicago\, and ran through Saukville. This system of trails extended from Hudson Bay all the way to Florida. In 1993\, the Wisconsin State Legislature designated the Green Bay Trail route\, from the Illinois State line to Green Bay\, an official heritage route\, the “Green Bay Ethnic Trail.”\n* From the Village of Saukville Downtown Revitalization Plan[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nAbout the Sponsor\nThe Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous is presented by the Saukville Historical Society\, a 501 (c) (3) organization affiliated with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Please direct any questions or concerns regarding the event to the organizers at info@crossroadsrendezvous.org\, or fill out the form below. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous on the third weekend of May at Peninsula Park in Saukville\, Wisconsin. \nTags: Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous\, Crossroads Rendezvous\, Saukville Rendezvous\, Wisconsin Rendezvous\, Wisconsin Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Wisconsin Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other Wisconsin Rendezvous

The station takes its name from Joseph Martin\, who led the expedition that identified that tract of land where they erected a stockaded fort\, some crude cabins\, and planted a corn crop. These efforts at settlement proved to be useless\, as an Indian attack occurred in the fall of 1769 and the station was abandoned. Joseph Martin would not be long absent from the station\, and in January 1775 returned to Powell’s Valley with a party of 16 or 18 men who built a more permanent station. As the last fortified station along the Wilderness Road prior to reaching the new lands being opened in Kentucky\, Martin’s Station was a well-known stop for the early settlers. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Raid at Martin’s Station reenactment at the Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing\, Virginia. \nTags: Martin’s Station Reenactment\, Martin’s Station \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events\nView other Market Fair & Trade Fair Events

Visit time: Allow 15-25 minutes for the standard Mansion tour\, depending on the number of guests each day; 60 minutes for the premium Mansion tour. The Mansion of George Washington’s Mount Vernon is one of the most iconic 18th-century homes in America. \nGeorge Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon began as a one and one-half story house built in 1735 by his father\, Augustine\, and received its well-known name during the ownership of his half-brother Lawrence. George acquired Mount Vernon in 1754\, and over the next 45 years slowly enlarged the dwelling to create the resplendent 21-room residence we see today. Washington personally supervised each renovation; advising on design\, construction and decoration—even during the Revolutionary War. Conscious that the world was watching\, Washington selected architectural features that expressed his growing status as a Virginia gentleman planter and ultimately as the leader of a fledgling democratic nation. \nThe Chintz Room\nAfter several years of research\, work\, and collaboration with colleagues and craftsmen throughout the country\, the restoration and refurnishing of the Chintz Room\, formerly known as the Nelly Custis Room\, is complete. \nMansion Outbuildings\nLook inside more than a dozen outbuildings where many of the estate’s essential operations—such as laundry\, spinning\, and meat curing—were performed. Demonstrations occur daily at our working blacksmith shop. Visit time: 30 minutes. Mount Vernon’s historic outbuildings house the many important trades that sustained the bustling plantation. \nIn the latter half of the eighteenth century\, Mount Vernon was the home\, farm\, and thriving business of one of America’s most prominent citizens. While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Lancaster Lupton first came to the area with a military expedition in 1835. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. Come see his trade fort and walk through the inner plaza to visit the blacksmith and carpenter shops\, living quarters\, kitchen and food preparation rooms\, trade rooms\, cantina and storage room with historic artifacts.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout South Platte Valley Historic Park\nHistoric Fort Lupton (aka Fort Lancaster) and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park encompasses 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton\, Colorado. The land consists of a large natural and camping area immediately along the river and a high bench of land where the original Fort Lancaster was located.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAlong the river\, in groves of cottonwood trees are camping areas that can be used by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops with reservations. These camping areas are also used by the re-enactment department of the SPVHS – the Tallow River Trappers – to hold periodic rendezvous events. Immediately along the river are nature areas that are home to deer\, turkey\, foxes and other animals and birds. At the north end of the historic park is a muzzleloading shooting range leased by the Fort Lupton Muzzleloading Club. \nStart your tour of the historic park at the re-creation of Fort Lancaster\, which was in operation from 1836 to 1844. Move down the path and see the restored trapper cabin from the 1850s\, which was originally located down along the Platte River in Adams County. Moving further down the path\, your will see both the Independence School built in 1875 and the Donelson homestead house built in the 1860s. The Donelson House and the Independence School represent the settlement of the Platte Valley started by the early fur trappers and traders.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nTags: Fort Lupton Heritage Fair\, Colorado History Festival\, History Timeline\nDon’t miss the next Fort Lupton Heritage Fair at the South Platte Valley Historic Park in Fort Lupton\, Colorado.
