SUMMARY:Battle of New Orleans Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle of New Orleans Reenactment at Chalmette Battlefield\n\nRate This Event\n \nHistory comes to life at the annual Battle of New Orleans Reenactment on January 11-12\, 2019 at the Chalmette Battlefield near New Orleans\, at Chalmette\, Louisiana. Each year over 150 living history re-enactors come together to commemorate America’s victory over the British in this final major battle of the War of 1812. Battle of New Orleans Reenactment events are held at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park – Chalmette Battlefield and include demonstrations such as cannon and musket firing and campfire cooking. \n\nBattle of New Orleans Reenactment at Chalmette Battlefield\nOne of the most amazing things about the Battle of New Orleans is the amount of different people and military groups from different races\, social classes\, languages\, and backgrounds who came together to protect their country and their way of life. This is easily seen throughout the encampments set up at the Battlefield during the Commemoration. \nThe majority of the Battle of New Orleans Reenactment events take place during the day from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with special events on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night is a re-enactment of one of the skirmishes leading up to the Battle (‘on-site’ at 7 p.m. at historic De La Ronde Oaks). \n \nRemember the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette Battlefield\, the very place where it happened. Meet the American and British troops who fought one of the most significant battles in world history and the civilians who kept the home fires burning in New Orleans. Enjoy period music\, watch cannon and musket firings\, participate in hands-on activities\, and listen to the stories of the men and women of 1815. \nBattle of New Orleans Reenactment Events: \nFriday: Note that there are no activities scheduled ‘on-site’ for Friday. HOWEVER\, At 7 p.m. on Friday\, visitors can witness Gen. Andrew Jackson’s surprise attack on the British in the re-enactment of the Dec. 23\, 1814\, night battle. This will take place at the historic De La Ronde Oaks just down the highway from the battlefield. The event is presented by the Louisiana Living History Foundation and hosted by St. Bernard Parish. \nSaturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Living history experts dressed as civilians and troops from 1815 demonstrate military drills\, fire cannons and muskets\, perform period music\, and share life in 1815 via hands-on activities\, games\, and craft demonstrations. Free. \nMonday 9:30 a.m.: Annual wreath-laying ceremony honors the troops of the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette Monument. Park at the battlefield (8606 West St. Bernard Highway\, Chalmette). Battlefield and visitor center open 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free. But\, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you’re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry\, flag song or honor songs. Some dances\, like intertribals and round dances\, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome\, but occasionally you’ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you’d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them\, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. The dancer’s outfit is commonly referred to as “regalia” and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Please do not touch a dancer’s regalia unless invited. Other than that\, enjoy the music\, dance\, food\, art and celebration that are going on and make sure you have a good time. No worries! Read this Powwow FAQ.”]\nWhat is a Powwow?\nA Powwow is a gathering of men\, women and children from different Native American nations. Friends\, family and new people come together to sing\, dance\, share food\, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage. \nWhat is a Veteran’s Powwow?\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows\, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service. \nI’m not Native American\, are Powwows for me?\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you! \nWhy are there Head Judges?\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with “prizes” like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. The audience is expected to stand during this time.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum on Saturcay\, Veterans Day Weekend in Mashantucket\, Connecticut. \n \nTags: Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Connecticut Powwow\, Connecticut Pow Wow \nView other Connecticut Pow Wows

Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa (commonly known as “The Prophet”) were leaders of a confederacy of Native Americans from various tribes that opposed US expansion into Native territory. As tensions and violence increased\, Governor Harrison marched with an army of about 1\,000 men to disperse the confederacy’s headquarters at Prophetstown\, near the confluence of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nTecumseh\, not yet ready to oppose the United States by force\, was away recruiting allies when Harrison’s army arrived. Tenskwatawa\, a spiritual leader but not a military man\, was in charge. Harrison camped near Prophetstown on November 6 and arranged to meet with Tenskwatawa the following day. Early the next morning\, however\, warriors from Prophetstown attacked Harrison’s army. Although the outnumbered attackers took Harrison’s army by surprise\, Harrison and his men stood their ground for more than two hours. The Native Americans were ultimately repulsed when their ammunition ran low. After the battle\, they abandoned Prophetstown and Harrison’s men burned it to the ground\, destroying the food supplies stored for the winter. The soldiers returned to their homes. \nHarrison\, having accomplished his goal of destroying Prophetstown\, proclaimed he had won a decisive victory. He gained the nickname “Tippecanoe”\, which was popularized in the campaign song “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” during the presidential election of 1840\, which Harrison won. The defeat was a setback for Tecumseh’s confederacy from which it never fully recovered.[3][4] \nAmerican public opinion blamed the violence on British interference in American affairs through financial and munitions support for the Indians. This led to a further deterioration of relations with Britain and was a catalyst of the War of 1812\, which began six months later. By the time the US declared war on the United Kingdom in June 1812\, Tecumseh’s confederacy was ready to launch its war against the United States in alliance with the British. In preparation\, the Natives soon rebuilt Prophetstown. Frontier violence in the region would continue until well after the War of 1812\, although Tecumseh was killed in 1813 during the Battle of the Thames.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Tippecanoe Commemoration in November on Veteran’s Day weekend at the Tippecanoe Battlefield in Battle Ground\, Indiana. \n \nTags: Battle of Tippecanoe Commemoration\, Commemoration of Battle of Tippecanoe\, War of 1812 Reenactment\, Indiana Living History \nView other War of 1812 Reenactments & Other Events

SUMMARY:Windows to the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:2018 Windows to the Civil War\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience hands on history at the 3rd Annual Windows to the Civil War on November 2-4\, 2018 at the Middletown Mansion Event Center in Middletown\, California. Friends of Gibson Museum volunteers will underwrite reenactments of Civil War battle reenactments by the American Civil War Association (ACWA). This year\, in conjunction with the Lake County Historical Society (LCHS) and the Museums of Lake County\, the Friends group will at last be able to bring historical information to young people in an engaging\, informal way. Guests are encouraged to come in period attire to add to the fun. \nGibson Museum & Cultural Center has been joined in sponsorship this year by the Museums of Lake County\, which also operates the Historic Courthouse Museum in Lakeport and and the Historic Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake\, and the Lake County Historical Society which provided support for the founding of Gibson Museum prior to its joining the county system. \nAdmission\n$15.00 Adult\n$8.00 Children 7 to 12\nFree – Children 6 & under\nTickets to the event are on sale October 1 at all three county museums\, in Lakeport\, Lower Lake and Middletown. \nPublic Hours\nSaturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSunday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \n“Windows to the Civil War” Activities (Saturday & Sunday): \n\nThere will\, of course\, be reenactments of Civil War battles by the American Civil War Association\, with vintage weaponry and harmless black powder to provide theatrical smoke and noise\, at 1 and 4 Saturday and at 11 and 2 Sunday.\nVisit with the Union and Confederate soldiers. Ask questions and share their years of learning depicting living history at Civil War reenactments.\nEvent visitors can tour the encampments\, the weaponry\, the sutlers stores and a period village before\, after\, and in-between battles\, in addition to enjoying the speakers and demonstrations. Children especially seem to enjoy questioning the soldiers.\nLearn about Lake County’s connection to the war and California’s participation.\nHear the Confederacy explained\, and the myths that have grown up about it.\nMarvel at food fashions and availability from 150-200 years ago.\nLearn about women soldiers\, black and immigrant troops and more fascinating little-known facts.\nAn old-fashioned Contra Dance\, lauded as fun even for those who “don’t dance\,” will be open to all Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. A donation of $5 is suggested to help compensate the Cobb Stompers musicians.\n\n \n“Windows to the Civil War” offers little-known facts from history. A raft of probably surprising information will be available to visitors to Gibson Museum’s upcoming Civil War event: \n\nCalifornia\, just eleven years old with a fewer than 380\,000 residents\, mustered a higher percentage of volunteers for the Union army than of the other 34 states. It is likely that an equal or greater number of Californians joined the Confederate forces\, though hard data is scarce.\nLake County was created five-and-a-half-weeks after the war was started by the firing on Ft. Sumter\, yet it had a significant role in the Civil War.\nFood\, its preparation and the trials of foraging for it\, was the subject most commonly included in soldiers’ letters home.\nConcerned and curious onlookers watched sham battles or actual bloody encounters of the war while noshing from their picnic baskets or on goodies bought from strolling “huxter women.” Ladies wore their Sunday best for the occasion.\n\nExplanations of these and similar facts will be offered to visitors of the third Civil War event sponsored by Gibson Museum & Cultural Center\, this year known as Windows to the Civil War. \n\ntext\nDean Enderlin\, in his role as local commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, will explain our local connection to the war.\nPhil Smoley will share his lifelong study of the Civil War with insights into the rationale of the Confederacy and the controversy over the issue of slavery or states rights.\nCarolynn Birilli brings surprises about 19th century culinary history and its effects on military\, civilian\, and enslaved populations.\nBarbara White will again offer the dressing demonstrations that have been a favorite of Civil War event-goers throughout northern California for decades\, including the past two years at the Mansion.\nVoris Brumfield will assume the persona of her great-great-grandmother\, a slave\, to explore the poplarity of the folk song “Goober Peas” and read the Proclamation of Independence.\nOther presenters will afford equally illuminating and entertaining fare.\ntext\ntext\n\nWindows to the Civil War School Day (Friday) \nSchoolchildren will be brought to the event site\, the Middletown Mansion Event Center\, Friday for a “school day” a day before the event opens to the general public. LCHS will draw on funds from a grant extended by Lake County’s Wine Alliance to provide buses for middle school and high school students. \nAmerican Civil War Association participants will be on hand for the School Day to play teacher to the about 300 middle-school and high school students expected to arrive by bus\, a donation of the Lake County Historical Society. \nGroups of students will rotate through eight outdoor “classrooms” formed of hay-bale seating where “instructors” from ACWA will teach them about weapons and uniforms\, marching and drilling\, women as soldiers\, telegraph communication\, women’s clothing\, camp hospitals and how a cannon is fired. \nLocation\nMiddletown Mansion Event Center\n20650 Highway 29\nMiddletown\, CA 95461\n(707) 263-4555 \nFor More Information\nCall 263-4555; Email info@friendsofgibson.com; Gibson Museum Website. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Windows to the Civil War in November at the Middletown Mansion Event Center in Middletown\, California. \nTags: Windows to the Civil War\, California Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events
