John Redd in 1775\, “Martin’s Fort was on Martin’s Creek. The fort was located on the north side of the creek. There were some five or six cabins; these built some 20 feet apart with strong stockades between. In these stockades there were port holes. The station contained about half an acre of ground. There were two fine springs near the station on its north side.” At one point\, Martins Station was the westernmost fort in the nation. The park literature explains\, “Established in the spring of 1775 by Captain Joseph Martin of Albermarle County\, Virginia\, Martin’s Station played a key role in the settlement of the American West.” The park literature further explains\, “Historic Martin’s Station lives on today in the nation’s most authentically re-created frontier fort. The hand-hewn structures were painstakingly built by historical interpreters using native materials and historically accurate tools. Nestled at the base of the majestic Cumberland Mountains in the far southwest corner of Virginia\, Wilderness Road State Park offers visitors a unique natural and historic experience that will create wonderful memories for years to come.” \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Martins Station Fall Encampment at the Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing\, Virginia. \nTags: Martins Station Fall Encampment\, Martin’s Station Fall Encampment\, Revolutionary War Muster\, Colonial Market Fair\, 18th Century Market Fair \nView other Musters & Encampmenets\nView other Market Fair & Trade Fair Events

Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. Andersen Visitor Center. \n[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afzZBn-N6Kk&width=540&height=283[/embedyt] \nIt operated the first school\, farm\, sawmill\, hospital and library in what decades later would be Nebraska. Years earlier\, the Lewis and Clark expedition’s historic first meeting with American Indians was held on its bluff. \nLife at an 1820s military post is depicted at this Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September and other  Living History Weekends at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park that take place from May through September each year. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, volunteers will demonstrate period trades\, such as blacksmithing\, carpentry\, tinsmithing and coopering\, and crafts such as quilting\, spinning and weaving. Members of the American Mountain Men group will have an encampment on the grounds\, portraying the fur trappers who helped settle the region. There will be a presentation at 1 p.m. on both days by Mark W. Kelly\, author of the book ““Lost Voices on the Missouri\, John Dougherty and the Indian Frontier.” \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in October. \nView Fort Atkinson Living History Events\nTags: Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend\, Nebraska Living History Weekend \nView other Living History Evens\nA candlelight tour of the fort is held each November and allows visitors to see the grounds in a different light while learning about historical events that took place at the fort.

In 1860\, Nathan Williams\, whose family would maintain ownership for the next 51 years\, purchased the property. By this time the barracks had disappeared\, due to time as well as scavengers looking for a ready supply of lumber and nails. \nWith the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861\, the area around Fort Frederick once again became important militarily. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal\, which passes one-quarter mile south of the fort (the railroad did not yet exist on this side of the river)\, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on the opposite (then Virginia) side of the river\, became focal points of defense for the Union Army. In December the 1st Maryland Infantry (U.S.) under the command of Colonel John Kenly\, was assigned to protect the canal and guard the fords and ferries of the Potomac River between Four Locks\, to the east\, and Cherry Run\, to the west. Company H of this regiment was ordered to occupy Fort Frederick. On Christmas Day\, 1861\, these troops fought a skirmish with Confederate Cavalry. The skirmish took place along the Potomac River below the fort and the Union troops guarding the river were successful in defending the canal\, but were not able to prevent Confederates from tearing up the railroad on the other side. On January 1\, 1862 another skirmish took place at the Fort\, as Union Troops again repulsed confederates attempting to tear up the railroad. \nFort Frederick continued to be occupied\, and in January 1862\, with the 1st Maryland being redistributed to guard points further west towards Hancock\, Company D replaced Company H here. These troops remained until the end of February\, when they\, along with others\, crossed the Potomac to guard the reconstruction of the B&O Railroad. Also during this period of time Union artillery was placed at the fort and was used against the Confederates in Virginia. \nThis is the last occurrence of the fort’s use by a military command. However\, the area around the fort remained vulnerable to Confederate Raiders through the rest of the war. Hence\, troops frequently passed near the fort and at times occupied grounds now encompassed by the state park. Most notable is October 1862 when a picket of the 12th Illinois Cavalry was assigned to the canal “immediately south of old Fort Frederick.” \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Frederick in the Civil War at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nTags: Fort Frederick in the Civil War\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Penn’s Colony Festival is as unique among other festivals as the Pittsburgh region is to the nation. With an authentic focus on the French & Indian era\, that began with the 1753 journey of a 21-year-old George Washington through this region\, Penn’s Colony Festival weaves history into a colonial faire featuring a village filled with fine craftsmen. \n\nPenn’s Colony Festival\nEvents from Washington’s first\, and subsequent visits to this region\, led to the sparking of the French and Indian War which changed the course of history for America\, and the world. \nAt Penn’s Colony Festival\, the living history encampment presents re-enactors from the British\, Colonial\, Scottish\, French and Native groups which made their mark on this region during the pivotal years of the French & Indian War (1754-1760). The Encampments\, Battle Re-Enactments\, Skills Presentations and Hidden History Revelations tell the story of our region. \nPenn’s Colony Festival Marketplace is affordable quality that people trust.\nThe distinction of Penn’s Colony craftsmen is quality and variety in large number of artisans who gather once a year to showcase contemporary and traditional works for the home\, garden\, seasonal and holiday decor\, gifts and personal accessories. \nA mission for design integrity\, renewable and safe resources and American-made wares results in artisans and work that customers have trusted for 30 years. \nWhether you want a custom-made primitive kitchen cabinet\, leathersmiths handtooling an intricate design into belt\, a glass blower creating a globe ornament\, you will find it here. Among the Penn’s Colony Festival artisans you will see a potter at their wheel and a blacksmith at the forge. Watch a weaver magically reveal the colorful patterns of a floor rug on the loom. Or see how a spinner works with wool. \nYou’ll see beautiful inspired designs with the style and function you want. As an added value\, learn why these handmade in America products outperform the imports. For example\, why belts from retail stores “crack” or why our potter’s coffee mug is just more comfortable to hold. As you browse up and down one road to the next in the Penn’s Colony Village\, the experience of handmade quality will be repeated wherever you turn. \nIt is about how to find beautiful items for practically every need that are safe to use\, to wear and to enjoy. That’s why customers have trusted our artisans for 30 years. To us\, that’s the important story that never grows old at Penn’s Colony Festival and Folk Art Marketplace! \nWhen you arrive at Penn’s Colony Festival . . .\nPick up the festival handbill and look at the “Diversions and Amusements” schedule. There are three locations for the scheduled activities. Prepare thyself to step back in time… there’s always some Colonial demonstration and event popping up on the village streets that is unscheduled. And there are hands on children’s activities and craftsman demonstrations throughout the festival and throughout the day. \nTake a seat at The Crown Grant Theatre\nFrom entrance gates 2 and 3 just follow Bushy Run Road to the trees. Hear the rousing tunes of life and laughter from groups such as Pint and a Half\, and Celtic Shores. You’ll be amazed by all the 18th century circus performers\, Faire Wynds can do. And this is where the roving Bagpipes will start or finish their ‘Round A bout’ marches. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Penn’s Colony Festival in Saxonburg\, Pennslyvania. \nTags: Penn’s Colony Festival\, Penn’s Colony Living History Festival\, Penn’s Colony Marketplace \nView other French & Indian War Encampments\, Reenactments & Living History Events

Re-enactor participation varies by weekend and weather conditions. \nApril to September\nFrom April to September\, on the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each of those months\, Fort Taylor Living History Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience life in the fort as it was during the Civil War. \nLocation\nFort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\n601 Howard England Way\nKey West\, FL 33040 \nMore Information: Kevin Bowes\, kevin.bowes@dep.state.fl.us (305) 292-6850 \nThe park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown\, 365 days a year. The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month from March to September at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, FL. \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events
