The Battle of the Loxahatchee was the last major standing battle of the Second Seminole War\, the longest and most expensive Indian War in American history. It was also the biggest battle with the amount of soldiers involved. More than 1\,500 soldiers squared off against several hundred tribal and Black Seminoles. Black Seminoles were escaped slaves who assimilated into the Seminole culture to fight for their freedom. Seminoles were an amalgamation of tribes (mostly Creek) who entered into Spanish Florida more than 100 years before this battle to escape white encroachment.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 1830\, a group of Indians collectively referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes\, the Cherokee\, Creeks\, Chickasaw\, Choctaw and Seminole\, were living as autonomous nations in what would be later known as the American Deep South. President Andrew Jackson convinced Congress to pass the Indian Removal Act of 1830\, which authorized the government to extinguish Indian title to lands in the southeast United States\, including Florida. \nThe Battle of the Loxahatchee River was the last major standing battle of the Second Seminole War\, the longest and most expensive Indian War in American history. Another engagement known as Powell’s Battle\, located just east of the Loxahatchee River\, occurred nine days before the Battle of the Loxahatchee. \nMost of the Seminole Nation\, including some 500 Black Seminoles\, were relocated to land in the western United States designated the Indian Territory. History refers to the forced evacuation as The Trails of Tears. Black Seminoles were escaped slaves who fought alongside Seminoles to fight for their freedom before the American Civil War. \nFirst battle of the Loxahatchee River\nThe first battle of the Loxahatchee River took place on January 15th\,1838. It was commanded by Lieutenant Levin M. Powell\, of the United States Navy’s Waterborne Everglades Expeditionary Unit composed of inexperienced Naval personnel who were soundly defeated by the Seminoles. The hero of this engagement was Joseph E. Johnston who took charge and directed a rear guard action and prevented what might well have become “Powells Massacre.” \nThe second battle of the Loxahatchee\, referred to as Jesup’s Battle\, occurred nine days later on January 24\, 1838. Today\, the pine flatwoods\, open meadows\, cypress swamps and oak hammocks are home to hundreds of native species of flora and fauna\, and give visitors a sense of “Old Florida” unique to this park setting. On January 24th 1838 Major General Thomas S. Jesup\, accompanied by fifteen hundred troops\, met three hundred Seminoles on the banks of the Loxahatchee River in the last standing battle of the Second Seminole War. During the battle General Jesup lead a charge to the river and was wounded. The Tennessee Volunteers\, lead by Major William Lauderdale\, took most of the casualties. The Battle ended when Col. William Harney and his Dragoons crossed the river and outflanked the Seminoles. Outnumbered\, the Seminoles fled into the swamps. Seven soldiers were killed and thirty one wounded\, including the General. \nSecond battle of the Loxahatchee River\nAfter the Battle of the Loxahatchee\, General Jesup petitioned Washington to allow the Seminoles to remain in the Everglades and end the war. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. Shouts and booms from gunpowder and cannon fire will fill the air as members of the San Antonio Living History Association re-enact the Battle of Bejar\, the final days of an 1835 siege by Texian rebels against Mexican forces in what was once La Villa de Bexar\, an alternate spelling. The re-enactment is one of several put on each year by the association\, whose members stage events around Texas commemorating the significant events of the Texas Revolution. \nBattle of Béjar Reenactment Mini Gallery\n\n \nThe re-enactors stage the surrender of Cos and one of his officers on La Villita’s central plaza. After a cease-fire ends the volleys coming from both sides\, a re-enactor playing Cos agrees to a parley with another playing Edward Burleson. \nReenactors visit with the public and try and explain different things about history\, not to slant it to one side or the other. The combatants from both sides fought with honorable intention. The Mexicans were defending the homeland. The Texian Federalist Army basically wanted to rule ourselves. \nAbout the Battle of Béjar\nThe battle began on Dec. 5\, 1835\, when Texian leaders launched a surprise attack on the Mexicans. They fought for five days\, and the battle ended with the surrender of Mexican General Martín Cos\, who returned to the interior of Mexico with some of his surviving troops. This was the impetus that initiated [Antonio Lopez de] Santa Ana to start his march on San Antonio to get here in late February. It starts that whole scene of the Texas Revolution.” \nThe Battle of Béjar was literally house-to-house fighting. They were actually digging through walls\, going into the next house and dropping down through ceilings. It was hand-to-hand. Probably the most brutal combat besides the Alamo. The re-enactors put painstaking effort into their research of period dress and their efforts to simulate the battles. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. But\, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you’re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry\, flag song or honor songs. Some dances\, like intertribals and round dances\, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome\, but occasionally you’ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you’d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them\, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. \nThe dancer’s outfit is commonly referred to as “regalia” and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Friends\, family and new people come together to sing\, dance\, share food\, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage. \nWhat is a Veteran’s Powwow?\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows\, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service. \nI’m not Native American\, are Powwows for me?\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you! \nWhy are there Head Judges?\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with “prizes” like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \n \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago.
