SUMMARY:Fort Taylor Living History Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\n\nRate This Event\n \nCelebrate Florida’s rich history at Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor\, America’s Southernmost Civil War Fortress in Key West\, Florida. Join our re-enactors as they set up tents\, clean their weapons and fire up the blacksmith shop. Climb the circular stairways and experience the harbor view just as the soldiers did in 1861. Walk down our cannon row and touch the actual cannons used to protect this Union stronghold. Tours will be available and public interaction is strongly recommended. Re-enactor participation varies by weekend and weather conditions. \nYear Round\nOn the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each of month\, Fort Taylor Living History Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience life in the fort as it was during the Civil War. \nLocation\nFort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\n601 Howard England Way\nKey West\, FL 33040 \nMore Information: Kevin Bowes\, kevin.bowes@dep.state.fl.us (305) 292-6850 \nThe park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown\, 365 days a year. The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, Florida. \nTags: Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\, Fort Zachary Taylor Living History Weekend\, Ft Taylor Living History Weekend \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

The battle reenactments are hosted by the Blue Gray Alliance\, Cleburne’s Divison. \nDowntown Jefferson is overtaken with people walking the brick-lined streets in period clothing\, and here and there you’ll also see re-enactors riding around town on horseback. \nYou’ll experience living history and what it’s like to see historic type tent avenues filled with folks sitting by the fire sharing stories and tales of battles fought and those to come. In these encampments\, you’ll see cooking items from the past being used today. In fact\, everything is of a historic nature\, from the tents to the cots and bed-rolls\, buckets\, pots and dishware from the past. You can see these tent camps all over town\, stop by and talk to the re-enactors if you get a chance – they love to share with civilians. Be sure to stop by any of the Sutler’s tents to buy some of their wares. \nThe battles will take place as the train stops along the river in the RV Park. The train will depart the depot in downtown Jefferson on Saturday at 11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 and 5:00; and on Sunday at 11:30 and 1:00. The train will stop on its way out to the RV Park at the Battlefield for about 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Then the train will continue out of the RV park\, turn around and come back. It will stop again at the Battlefield for another 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Reenactors can engage for a longer period at their discretion. The Virginia\, a replica ironclad with five working cannons\, joins the skirmish as it fires its cannons from the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou River. \nJefferson Civil War Days Mini-Gallery\n\n\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Summary Schedule (subject to change)”]\nFriday\n9:00 – 2:30 at Diamond Don RV Park\nSchool Day Civil War Living History\, “Day of Learning”\, complete with a gunboat and cannons. \nFriday Narrated Historical Day Tours: 9:30\, 10:30\, 11:30\, and 12:30\nThe Great Locomotive Chase/The Andrews Raid\, aboard a live steam train.\nTrain departs from Diamond Don RV Park. \nSaturday\n2:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 & 5:00 Train departs downtown Jefferson depot \nSunday\n1:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30 & 1:00 Narrated Historical Train Day Tours\, scouting probes & skirmishes & Naval Battle. \nJefferson was the shipping port to the Mississippi. This boat will fire on the troops on the shore along the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou. Troops will defend the passengers on the train during the reenactment of the Andrews Raid and locomotive chase\, while also defending the Port of Jefferson Texas. Once a very important Water Port in Texas. This boat was commissioned by the people of Jefferson’s Historic Train company to add one more element to the events of the season. \nHistory Behind the Reenactment\nThe Union mounted several attempts to capture the trans-Mississippi regions of Texas and Louisiana from 1862 until the war’s end. With ports to the east under blockade or captured\, Texas in particular became a blocking-running haven. Referred to as the “back door” of the Confederacy. Texas and western Louisiana continued to provide cotton crops shipped to Europe by means of blockade runners in exchange for supplies. The Union’s disastrous Red River Campaign in western Louisiana\, including a defeat at the Battle of Mansfield\, effectively ended the Union’s final invasion attempt of the region until the fall of the Confederacy. Had the Union soldiers not been stopped at Mansfield\, they would surely have been looking upriver to Jefferson\, a major river port of the time. Jefferson now takes that history and brings it to life each year. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Jefferson Civil War Days on the first full weekend of May in Jefferson\, Texas. \nTags: Jefferson Civil War Days\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Days\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment\, Naval Battle of Port Jefferson Reenactment\, Port Jefferson Naval Reenactment\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Buchanan Farmers provided the Confederate quartermaster with beef\, cotton\, yarn and corn. Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort\, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery. The unit distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. \nFederal General David Hunter marched through Buchanan on June 13\, 1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg. The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. Period letters tell how McCausland burned the covered bridge over the James River before leaving igniting a fire which destroyed close to thirty buildings. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy\, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill\, the Anchorage\, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Buchanan Civil War History Weekend in downtown Buchanon\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Buchanan Civil War History Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Days\, Buchanan Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac landed at Ft. Monroe and Newport News Point and began making their way towards Richmond. By early April\, they had been stopped by General John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, while reinforcements from General Joseph Johnston’s army began arriving from northern Virginia. Both sides settled into a siege along the Warwick River and around Yorktown. \nCome see this historic siege recreated at locations impacted by armies from both sides. This event will take place on Saturday 10-5 pm and Sunday 11-3 pm. \nEndview Plantation:\nThroughout the Civil War\, refugees fled as armies moved through the countryside. These families didn’t know when or if they would be able to return home and if they did\, what they would find. Local families such as the Curtis family of Endview and the Lee family of Lee Hall fled west and wouldn’t return until the war was over three years later. At Endview see living historians portraying civilians fleeing the armies as they move up the Peninsula. Endview Plantation is located at 362 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 887-1862. \nLee Hall Mansion:\nServing as the Confederate Headquarters of Gen. John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, Lee Hall would’ve been the epicenter of the Confederate resistance to McClellan’s Union army with staff officers busy keeping the army running. As Gen. Joseph Johnston’s army began to arrive from northern Virginia to reinforce Magruder’s troops\, many regiments passed by Lee Hall or camped on its property before moving on to their places in the Confederate fortifications. One such unit was the 3rd South Carolina Infantry. See living historians portraying Magruder’s staff and the 3rd SC Infantry. Lee Hall Mansion is located at 163 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 888-3371. \nNewport News Park:\nAs soldiers from both sides settled into a siege\, the 15th North Carolina Infantry was sent to Dam #1 (one of 5 dams used to make the Warwick River impassable) to build more fortifications and protect the dam from a possible crossing. On April 16th\, the 3rd Vermont Infantry tried to cross the river before being forced back by overwhelming Confederate reinforcements. See living historians portraying members of the 15th NC and 3rd VT infantry at the original site near the Discovery Center. Newport News Park is located at 13560 Jefferson Ave. Newport News\, VA 23603. Follow Constitution Way to the Discovery Center. Banks and Confederate forces\, led by Major General Richard Taylor. \nThe battle was essentially a continuation of the previous day’s Battle of Mansfield\, fought nearby\, which ended around sunset due to darkness. The night time provided a brief interlude in hostilities. On April 9\, Taylor launched an ambitious assault against the newly reinforced Federals at Pleasant Hill and had the upper hand before General Thomas J. Churchill’s Arkansas division was flanked on its right and repulsed. After the battle\, the Federals remained demoralized and unconfident in their commander; they retreated to Grand Ecore\, and from there to Alexandria. This was the largest battle fought west of the Mississippi River. \nOfficially\, the battle was a Union victory; as the Confederates were successfully driven from the field. However\, because Banks and his army had retreated so soon afterwards\, many argued over who had really won. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment in Pllican\, Louisiana. \nTags: Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment\, Battle of Pleasant Hill Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Francis Marion Cockrell’s defenders from four redoubts and other earthen fortifications. \nBefort the Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment\, it will be a living history encampment where both the federal troops and the Confederate troops will be working in the rifle pits and in the federal and Confederate works\, shoring up their shelters. Spectators will be shown some food demonstrations as well as digging in\, and there will probably some light skirmishes throughout the day as far as weapons demonstrations go. Starting at 10 a.m. and until about 3:30 p.m.\, the public will have an opportunity to tour the encampments\, see group demonstrations and talk to the individual soldiers. \nThe battle reenactment will cap off in the evening with a final assault that will be portraying the 83rd Ohio Regiment attacking Redoubt 4 and taking Redoubt 4\, which was manned by Cockrell’s Missouri Brigade. Then a federal flag will be planted in an approximately close area to where it happened in 1865. So the battle reenactment is going to be on the same field\, the same works and following as close as possible the actual flow of the battle. \nSaturday Hours: 8:00 AM-5:00 PM\nAdmission: $10 for adults; $5 for children 6-12\nMore Infomation: (251) 626-0798 or e-mail: BlakeleyPark@aol.com \nSaturday Schedule of Public Events (subject to change)\n8:00 AM Camps Open (Union and Confederate Lines)\n8:30 AM Artifact Exhibit Opens at Wehle Center\n9:00 AM-10:30 AM “Battles of Fort Blakeley and Spanish Fort” cruise\n9:00 AM-10:30 AM Weapons Demonstrations and Battlefield Tours\n11:00 AM-12:30 PM “Battles of Fort Blakeley and Spanish Fort” cruise\n11:00 AM Reenactment of a Confederate Sortie (attack from defenses)\n12:30 PM Lecture on Civil War artifacts at Wehle Center\n1:00 PM-2:30 PM Weapons Demonstrations and Battlefield Tours\n3:00 PM Reenactment of Assault on Fort Blakeley\n4:30 PM Camps Close (Union and Confederate Lines)\n4:30 PM Artifact Exhibit at Wehle Center Closes\nOn Saturday prior to the Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment of the final assault on Fort Blakeley in the afternoon we’ll also offer two special cruises along the Tensaw River focusing on the military actions here and at nearby Spanish Fort: \nBattle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment and Spanish Fort History Cruise \n9:00-10:30 AM and 11:00 AM-12:30 PM\nCruise Tickets: $27 for adults; $17 for children 6-12\n(includes complimentary admission to Reenactment events)\nFor reservations call 251-626-5581 \nJoin us on a historic voyage of discovery along the lower Delta’s scenic waterways as we explore the major battles of the Civil War’s “Mobile Campaign” from the rivers on which its major actions took place! This narrated cruise will take guests alongside the Confederate strongholds of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley\, guardians of the approaches to Mobile and scene of some of the fiercest fighting during the war in Alabama. We will also visit the sites of Batteries Huger and Tracy\, both long lost key positions in the Confederacy’s defenses of Mobile\, and learn about the numerous Confederate and Union warships which vied for control of area waterways during the Civil War’s last major campaign. SUMMARY:Battle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nDon’t miss the excitement at the Battle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment on March 22-24\, 2019 at the Ralph V. Chisholm Park in Narcoossee\, Florida. The annual recreation of a Civil War battle\, The Battle of Narcoossee Mill is a great family activity that is both educational and entertaining. Visitors can roam through Civil War era camps\, talk with Union and Confederate reenactors\, watch the mounted cavalry of days past\, and relive the battle reenactment from the American Civil War. (This “particular” Battle really never occurred.) \n\nBattle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment\nThe park opens at 9:30 am and the battle begins promptly at 2:00 p.m. each day. Enjoy great BBQ\, music\, and homemade root beer while strolling through the authentic army camps. If you are in the Saint Cloud Florida area the fourth weekend of March\, be sure to stop by and enjoy history on a 50 acre stage. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”More about the event history”]\nDuring the Civil War\, this area played a unique role in aiding the Confederate Army in the South\, not as a battlefield\, but as a large supplier of beef for the Confederacy and the army. There was an actual unit called the Cattle Guard back then\, and it played a major role in the war. The role that Florida’s Osceola County could have played in the Civil War is what will come to life when two armies fight during the Annual Battle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment in Osceola County’s Ralph V. Chisholm Park in Narcoossee. \nThis event is organized by the Jacob Summerlin Camp\, named for the cattle baron who helped grow so much of the Central Florida economy in the 1800s. The Jacob Summerlin Camp\, a chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans\, is a civic group formed in Osceola County in 1991. The Battle at Narcoossee Mill Reenactment raises funds for the camp’s charitable work\, including scholarships\, veteran monuments\, grave markers\, cemetery maintenance\, and a Christmas charity program. \nIt’s not a reenactment of a historic battle\, but rather a depiction of how a conflict may have occurred during the war for Southern Independence on land that would become Osceola County after the war. There was not ever really a battle here\, so it is more an “enactment” of a scenario of how a battle could have taken place in that era\, in this area.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nEducation Day\nStudents and Chaperones: $5.00 Per Person Admission – Lunch Included\nMust be postmarked with payment in full by March 15th\, 2018 (Non-Refundable)\nRegister http://www.jacobsummerlin.org/edreg.htm \nSchedule of Events (subject to change\nFriday\n9:30 am – Education Day Tours Begin\nSaturday\n07:00 am – Reveille\n09:00 am – Colors (In Camp by Unit)\n09:30 am – Park opens to spectators\n10:00 am – Ladies’ Tea\n10:00 am till 1:00 pm Musket Demonstrations (next to BBQ tent)\n11:00 am – Officers’ Call\n12:30 pm – Cannon Demonstration (on battlefield in front of bleachers)\n01:00 pm – Music by “7 lbs of Bacon” string band\n01:00 pm – Camps Closed for Battle\n01:00 pm – Weapons and Authenticity Inspections\n02:00 pm – Battle Begins\n03:00 pm – Battle Ends – Camps Reopen\n07:30 pm – Artillery Night Fire at Dusk\n08:00 pm – Re-enactors Barn Dance\nSunday\n07:00 am – Reveille\n09:00 am – Colors (In Camp by Unit)\n09:30 am – Park opens to spectators\n10:00 am – Reenactors’ Church Service\n11:00 am – Officers’ Call\n11:00 am till 1:00 pm Musket Demonstrations (next to BBQ tent)\n12:30 pm – Cannon Demonstration (on battlefield in front of bleachers)\n01:00 pm – Music by “7 lbs of Bacon” string band\n01:00 pm – Camps Closed for Battle\n01:00 pm – Weapons and Authenticity Inspections\n02:00 pm – Battle Begins\n03:00 pm – Battle Ends – Camps Reopen\n05:30 pm – Camps Close \nOLD TIME BARN DANCE\nMosey on down to the large pavilion on Saturday night for the period Barn Dance. These individuals were pursuing the dual and\, what they believed to be\, honorable causes of defending and maintaining the sovereignties of the State of Florida and the Confederate States of America. Although the Traveling Florida Confederate Memorial Wall contains only the names of those who served honorably and died during the period 1861-1865\, the initiative endeavors to pay homage to all of the aforementioned personnel. Therefore\, the primary goal of this nonpolitical undertaking is to provide an educational and sacred tribute to these men. \nReenactors Information\nRegistration Fee: $7.00 Per Person Charge for All Re-Enactors\, due upon arrival.

SUMMARY:Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:2019 The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment on March 9-10\, 2019 in Florence\, South Carolina. The reenactment depicts an encounter that occurred on March 5\, 1865 when 500 federal soldiers\, under the command of Colonel Reuben Williams of the 12th Indiana Infantry\, marched into the Florence area to destroy the railroad depot. These federal troops were met by a group of Confederate soldiers who drove them away with the help of 400 reinforcements from the area home guard. \n\nSkirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment\nBounty for Union SoldiersIn an effort to get more Federal soldiers\, we’re offering a $200 bounty for any group that can put 20 rifles on the field both days. The bounty is good for up to 3 groups. Out of state units will get preference. We still have the bounty for artillery\, see Garfield for that. And the bounty for cavalry. I think Petra is keeping up with that. \nThe Columns is a popular name for The Harwell House at Rankin Plantation\, a beautiful antebellum home that dates back over 100 years. The name refers to the 22 Greek style\, Doric columns that surround the home on three sides. The house was placed on the National Register of historic places in 1974. \nProceeds from Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment go towards historical preservation such as the 23rd History Scholarship\, the Florence Museum of Art\, Science and History\, the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum at the SC State Museum\, and other worthy projects. \nAdmission$10.00 Adults$5.00 Students under 18FREE: Children under 12These funds will go directly to historic preservation or our scholarship at Francis Marion University. \nSkirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n \nSkirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment Schedule (tentative)Thursday12:00 am Registration & Gates Open For Sutlers & ReenactorsFriday8:00 am Registration & Gates Open For Sutlers & Reenactors8:30 am Demonstrations For Area Students3:00 pm Demonstrations Conclude9:00 pm Officers Meeting\, The Commander’s Quarters9:00 pm All Vehicles To Be Out Of CampLate arrivals may unload and then move their vehicles to parking.Saturday7:00 am Reveille8:30 am Morning Parade9:00 am Camps Open To The Public9:15 am Company Drill\, Scenario Review9:30 am Battalion Drill2:00 pm Skirmish At Gambles Hotel3:00 pm Troops To Pass In Review5:00 pm Camp Closed To Public8:00 pm Barn Dance\, 1860’s Period Dress Please11:00 pm Tattoo & TapsSunday7:00 am Reveille8:30 am Morning Parade9:00 am Camps Open To The Public10:45 am Soldiers Chorus Rehearsal\, Barn11:00 am Church Service\, Barn1:30 pm Skirmish For Reenactors2:00 pm Skirmish At Gambles HotelThe event is over with the dismissal of troops after the end of the battle on Sunday. Spectators are requested to make their way out without dallying too long. Reenactors may bring their vehicles in to load out. Please be extra watchful and careful as many people are still moving about the camps \nSchool DayWe will have historically correct presentations depicting camp life of the soldiers\, infantry and artillery drill\, cooking demonstrations\, a blacksmith and a civilian homestead. \nOur education program for The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel reenactment for school children is by invitation only. It’s not hard to get one\, but you must contact Petra Darby at 803-518-1921 or by email at petradarby[@]yahoo.com (without the brackets). And please note. To offset the cost of insurance\, we’re asking 5.00 per child that attends. \nDirections to The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel ReenactmentTo program your GPS\, use 4789 East Old Marion Hwy\, Florence\, SC 29502 for a street address. \nThe event site is located near the intersection of Interstates 95 and 20\, about 25 miles below the NC state line. That makes it easy from just about everywhere. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Reenactor Information”]For The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel reenactment\, all usual amenities will be provided: water in the camp\, blue rooms at strategic locations\, plenty of hay in the barn\, and more firewood then you’ll be able to burn in a cold weekend! We have a barn dance on Saturday that has become renown. As it has always been\, there is no registration fee for reenactors. There will be about 20 sutlers there to get any gear you need. The city of Florence is only a few miles away and is large enough to accommodate any needs you may have. You may arrive as early as Thursday morning\, but be aware that we will have 1500 school children on Friday for the education program. \nEvery year we try to come up with something a bit different. If you attended the battle last year\, there’s a good chance you’ll see and do something different this year. \nDo you like to campaign? Get away from the hustle and bustle that goes on near the sutlers? Give me a shout. We’ve got no shortage of remote areas that would give the most hard core unit what they’re looking for. \nUnionists\, or good fellows who will wear a blue jacket – It’s only a six hour ride from the Mason Dixon line. We usually galvanize amongst ourselves\, but what a great opportunity for a federal unit to be spoiled at a fine event. Did you know it could be 80 degrees and sunny while a blizzard is blowing back home? Well\, it could! If you attended The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel reenactment just for a drill weekend\, you would surely mark it on your calendar for the following year. Contact Tom Grazioli at tom[@]associatedcomputer.cc (without the brackets) or call 843-455-2989 for more information. You can also check our bulletin board. \nArtillery – A bounty is being offered to guns that have been invited to The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel reenactment. Unfortunately we can’t give a stipen to every battery that might want to come. The money just isn’t there. We normally accommodate 10 guns. Contact John Nolan at johnnyrebsn2002[@]yahoo.com (without the brackets) for more information. \nCavalry – All horses\, donkeys\, and mules must have a current Coggins certificate. The farm works cattle across all the property that we use. When you arrive on site and register for the event\, you will have to show your certificate at that time. Do not bring an animal that does not have a current certificate. If you do\, you will be required to immediately remove the animal from the property. \nA bounty will be paid for each mounted trooper that participates. It’s $10.00 each day for each mount\, and $15 more if you do school day. It’s not a lot\, but we hope to cover the cost of your hay for the weekend. Collect your bounty at the mercantile after church on Sunday. \nThe Ball – Held on Saturday night in the top of the hay barn. The Crescent Moon Rounders will likely provide the music. And we keep a close eye on the hay lest we loose one of our men like the proverbial needle. Why they keep getting lost in there is a mystery to me\, but surely not to the fathers of the young ladies at the dance! \nOfficers Call – This will take place at 9:00 pm on Friday at the tent of Colonel Bruce Blackmon of the Palmetto Battalion. Make sure a representative of your unit attends to get more information and assignments as they will be determined at this meeting.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion][su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Spectator Information”]There is more than just the battle. The military and refugee camps are open and people are encouraged to visit and speak to the reenactors. The first person impressions are supposed to give you the experience of speaking to a person of that time and place. There is a cabin that would have been correct for field hands. You can expect cooking demonstrations. Sometimes we have candle makers and quilters demonstrating their skills. There’s always a blacksmith or two banging away at an anvil. \nThere are period merchants called “sutlers” that sell wares that would have been available at the time. There is also a varied selection of modern vendors selling food\, drinks and historically related items. \nThe house is usually open for tours. Those are conducted by the property owner separately from the event. Check at the gate as you arrive to see if any are planned.Be prepared to walk. The camps are about 100 yards from the battlefield. We do have handicapped parking close to the battlefield for those that require it. It doesn’t hurt to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. We have an area in front designated just for people to sit. \nWhat time should you come in? The Skirmish At Gambles Hotel reenactment battle is at 2:00 in the afternoon. Skirmishing will begin even earlier. If I were you\, I’d get my lunch and take it down at 1:00 where I could get a good seat and eat while waiting. You will want to get to the site even earlier than that. Sometimes the line of cars will backup at the entrance. Come down at 11:00. Walk the camps and sutler row at your leisure. Get your lunch and mosey to the battlefield. It’s a pleasant way to spend a few hours and you might be surprised at what you’ll learn.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]VendorsVendors and sutlers are by invitation only. We make an effort to limit the type of vendor so that there are not too many of any one kind. The fee for sutlers is $75. For modern vendors it’s $100. \nWe do not allow anything that is offensive or distasteful to be sold at your table or in your tent. We reserve the right to define what may be offensive or distasteful. If we find something objectionable\, you may be asked to remove it\, or you may be asked to leave the premises. \nWe set up the modern vendors closer to the house. Sutlers set up on one line facing the barn. Parking is really close\, less than a hundred yards from the most distant tent. There is adequate room for a camper to be set up\, but not enough to have a pavilion. There are no hookups. Generators are OK if they don’t bother anyone. If you prefer to stay in a hotel\, there is one at the 327 exit on 95\, just 7 or 8 miles away. And there are several more in Florence from 10 to 20 miles away. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment in March in Florence\, South Carolina. \nTags: Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Reenactment\, Skirmish At Gambles Hotel Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Living History \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

The principal commanders were Union Maj. Gen. Hugh Judson Kilpatrick and Confederate Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler. Wheeler was able to score a minor victory over Kilpatrick. \nComing at the end of the war in the midst of the Confederate defeat\, the Battle of Aiken makes few of the standard histories of the war. The Confederate victory is however crucial to the local history of the region because the victory prevented the destruction of the local capital and economy\, thus enabling the region to withstand the Reconstruction period better than other more devastated areas of the South. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Aiken Reenactment on the last full weekend in February in Aiken\, South Carolina. \nTags: Battle of Aiken Reenactment\, Battle of Aiken Civil War Reenactment\, South Carolina Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView Battle of Aiken Reenactment Detail
