DESCRIPTION:2018 Windows to the Civil War\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nExperience hands on history at the 3rd Annual Windows to the Civil War on November 2-4\, 2018 at the Middletown Mansion Event Center in Middletown\, California. Friends of Gibson Museum volunteers will underwrite reenactments of Civil War battle reenactments by the American Civil War Association (ACWA). This year\, in conjunction with the Lake County Historical Society (LCHS) and the Museums of Lake County\, the Friends group will at last be able to bring historical information to young people in an engaging\, informal way. Guests are encouraged to come in period attire to add to the fun. \nGibson Museum & Cultural Center has been joined in sponsorship this year by the Museums of Lake County\, which also operates the Historic Courthouse Museum in Lakeport and and the Historic Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake\, and the Lake County Historical Society which provided support for the founding of Gibson Museum prior to its joining the county system. \nAdmission\n$15.00 Adult\n$8.00 Children 7 to 12\nFree – Children 6 & under\nTickets to the event are on sale October 1 at all three county museums\, in Lakeport\, Lower Lake and Middletown. \nPublic Hours\nSaturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\nSunday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \n“Windows to the Civil War” Activities (Saturday & Sunday): \n\nThere will\, of course\, be reenactments of Civil War battles by the American Civil War Association\, with vintage weaponry and harmless black powder to provide theatrical smoke and noise\, at 1 and 4 Saturday and at 11 and 2 Sunday.\nVisit with the Union and Confederate soldiers. Ask questions and share their years of learning depicting living history at Civil War reenactments.\nEvent visitors can tour the encampments\, the weaponry\, the sutlers stores and a period village before\, after\, and in-between battles\, in addition to enjoying the speakers and demonstrations. Children especially seem to enjoy questioning the soldiers.\nLearn about Lake County’s connection to the war and California’s participation.\nHear the Confederacy explained\, and the myths that have grown up about it.\nMarvel at food fashions and availability from 150-200 years ago.\nLearn about women soldiers\, black and immigrant troops and more fascinating little-known facts.\nAn old-fashioned Contra Dance\, lauded as fun even for those who “don’t dance\,” will be open to all Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. A donation of $5 is suggested to help compensate the Cobb Stompers musicians.\n\n \n“Windows to the Civil War” offers little-known facts from history. A raft of probably surprising information will be available to visitors to Gibson Museum’s upcoming Civil War event: \n\nCalifornia\, just eleven years old with a fewer than 380\,000 residents\, mustered a higher percentage of volunteers for the Union army than of the other 34 states. It is likely that an equal or greater number of Californians joined the Confederate forces\, though hard data is scarce.\nLake County was created five-and-a-half-weeks after the war was started by the firing on Ft. Sumter\, yet it had a significant role in the Civil War.\nFood\, its preparation and the trials of foraging for it\, was the subject most commonly included in soldiers’ letters home.\nConcerned and curious onlookers watched sham battles or actual bloody encounters of the war while noshing from their picnic baskets or on goodies bought from strolling “huxter women.” Ladies wore their Sunday best for the occasion.\n\nExplanations of these and similar facts will be offered to visitors of the third Civil War event sponsored by Gibson Museum & Cultural Center\, this year known as Windows to the Civil War. \n\ntext\nDean Enderlin\, in his role as local commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, will explain our local connection to the war.\nPhil Smoley will share his lifelong study of the Civil War with insights into the rationale of the Confederacy and the controversy over the issue of slavery or states rights.\nCarolynn Birilli brings surprises about 19th century culinary history and its effects on military\, civilian\, and enslaved populations.\nBarbara White will again offer the dressing demonstrations that have been a favorite of Civil War event-goers throughout northern California for decades\, including the past two years at the Mansion.\nVoris Brumfield will assume the persona of her great-great-grandmother\, a slave\, to explore the poplarity of the folk song “Goober Peas” and read the Proclamation of Independence.\nOther presenters will afford equally illuminating and entertaining fare.\ntext\ntext\n\nWindows to the Civil War School Day (Friday) \nSchoolchildren will be brought to the event site\, the Middletown Mansion Event Center\, Friday for a “school day” a day before the event opens to the general public. LCHS will draw on funds from a grant extended by Lake County’s Wine Alliance to provide buses for middle school and high school students. \nAmerican Civil War Association participants will be on hand for the School Day to play teacher to the about 300 middle-school and high school students expected to arrive by bus\, a donation of the Lake County Historical Society. \nGroups of students will rotate through eight outdoor “classrooms” formed of hay-bale seating where “instructors” from ACWA will teach them about weapons and uniforms\, marching and drilling\, women as soldiers\, telegraph communication\, women’s clothing\, camp hospitals and how a cannon is fired. \nLocation\nMiddletown Mansion Event Center\n20650 Highway 29\nMiddletown\, CA 95461\n(707) 263-4555 \nFor More Information\nCall 263-4555; Email info@friendsofgibson.com; Gibson Museum Website. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Windows to the Civil War in November at the Middletown Mansion Event Center in Middletown\, California. \nTags: Windows to the Civil War\, California Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

The reenactment celebrates the Anniversary of the Raid on Guyandotte that took place in 1861. Guyandotte Civil War Days focuses its programs on this historic event in an effort to celebrate and promote the rich heritage of the area. The re-enactment of the Confederate raid on Saturday is the highlight of this event. The re-enactment is a true re-enactment based on known historical facts concerning the November 10\,1861\, skirmish. \n\nGuyandotte Civil War Days Reenactment\nOn November 10\, 1861 the sleepy southern town of Guyandotte was firmly in Union hands. Confederate raiders struck suddenly and quickly\, capturing the Garrison and returning the village to the dominion of the Stars and Bars. That conquest was short-lived\, however. As the Confederates were leaving town the next morning with 110 prisoners in tow\, Union troops returned and took vengeance on what they considered a “seesech” (secession) town. By nightfall\, two-thirds of the village had been burned to the ground. \nToday\, the dirt roads are paved\, modern buildings have replaced many of the burned out frames\, and Guyandotte is a part of contemporary Huntington\, West Virginia. Come join us where history was made as the sights and sounds of the Civil War return as hundreds of re-enactors participate in “America’s greatest street battle.” \nEvent Features: \n\nTour the Historic Madie Carroll House built in 1810\nTour Historic Churches\nTour Historic Homes & Buildings\nCivil War Haunted History Tours of Guyandotte\nVisit Sutlers Row\nArts & Crafts\nFood Vendors\nBattle Scenarios\n\nGuyandotte Civil War Days Reenactment Mini Gallery\n\n \nGuyandotte Civil War Days Reenactment Schedule\nThis schedule is subject to minor revisions or additions. \nWednesday – Friday\nThese dates (beginning at 7:00 p.m.) are reserved for lectures\, plays\, and/or other presentations. Over 500 reenactors participate in this annual event. Relive history at the Dollinger Farm Civil War Reenactment as you experience the sights\, sounds and smells of war. There are live horses\, booming cannons\, and spectacular battle scenes. Experience a piece of American Civil War History at our “battlefield.” The Dollinger Farm Civil War Reenactment weekend is one that you won’t want you or your family to miss! Cancelled for 2019. \n\nDollinger Farm Civil War Reenactment\nOn the third full weekend (Saturday & Sunday) in October\, green farm grounds will fill with tents housing Confederate and Union soldiers. An Illinois pumpkin farm will become a Virginia creek on April 6\, 1865\, or some other famous Civil War Battle and Battlefield that determined the fate of our nation. As thousands of onlookers watch hundreds of reenactors armed with rifles and cannons portray carefully choreographed battles of the Civil War. \nPreparing for the Battle Reenactment\nBefore the Saturday afternoon battle commenced up the hill at the farm\, Union infantrymen prepare for what they know will be a long march to the battlefield and a tough battle. They pack up their ammunition pouches and fill their knapsacks with food and gear. As in the days of the real battle\, infantrymen never knew where they would end up following the battle\, so they carried everything with them\, including bedding. \n \nWhile they prepared themselves\, women and children lined the gravel path wearing period clothing\, waiting to cheer on the soldiers as they marched past. It was a tradition of the time to support the men and see them off. \nVisitors will want to arrive at least 1/2 hour early to walk up the hill to the Battlefield. The Battle scenes are the same on both days\, so choose whichever day fits your schedule. Tickets are required for the battle and are available online on the event site (see link at right). \nBattle Times\n2:00 p.m. – Saturday\n2:00 p.m. – Sunday\n* Allow at least 1/2 hour to walk up the hill to the Battlefield! Tickets are required for the battle (see below). \nAdmission\nWe charge a small entrance fee for the Battlefield Reenactment only. All other Civil War activities are free to the public. Firewood and straw is provided for the campsites\, food for the horses and powder for the battle. \nAbout Dollinger Farms\nThe farm has been in the Dollinger Family since 1852. It used to be the entire town of Dresden\, Illinois\, platted in 1836. Grandma’s house (located next to the Bee Barn) was formerly known as Rutherford’s Tavern and served as a stop on the stagecoach line. \nVisitors are invited to take a walk through history and visit the old Catholic Cemetery on the hill\, a place where many stories rest. This little part of the world also hosts one of the best Civil War Reenactments in the state. With over 500 reenactors\, this experience is sure to make you relive a piece of American History. \nLocation & Contact\nDollinger Family Farm\n7420 E. For three days\, reenactors play the part of Civil War soldiers\, vendors\, and doctors to recreate the Civil War era and the Battle of Camp Wildcat. There will be a battle reenactment each of the three days – along with a cavalry competition\, camp tour\, dinner and barn dance\, ladies’ tea and social and memorial service to honor the battle\, which took place on October 21 1861. \n\nBattle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment\nFree admission – Donations are appreciated. \nBattle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment Schedule of Events\nThursday\n6:00 p.m. Registration opens \nFriday\n8:00 a.m. Camp to finalize and get ready for school children\n9:00 a.m. Buses begin to arrive\nNoon SKIRMISH on the battlefield with all available reenactors\n2:00 p.m. “Living History Day” ends\n3:00 p.m. Reenactor dinner\n5:30 p.m. Registration reopens\n10:00 p.m. Registration closes until Saturday (follow signs to set up camp) \nSaturday\n10:00 a.m. Living History Camps open to the public\n10:15 a.m. Officers Call at the Barn\n10:45 a.m. Powder rations behind the Barn (must have ticket)\n11:00 a.m. President Lincoln and General Lee at the tent outside the Barn\nNoon Military Demonstration on the Field\nNoon Ladies Tea and Social in the Barn (tickets required ̶ at registration while available)\n2:00 p.m. Battle of Camp Wildcat reenacted on original bivouac of Confederate forces\n3:30 p.m. Wildcat Wedding\n4:30 p.m. Camp closes to the public\n6:00 p.m. Reenactor dinner\n8:00 p.m. Reenactor Barn Dance (period clothing requested\, but not required)\n10:30 p.m. End of Dance and Cannon Night Fire & Fireworks \nSunday\n8:30 a.m. Officer’s Call at the Barn\n10:00 a.m. Camp opens to the public\n10:00 a.m. Period church service at the Barn (no guns fired during service)\n10:45 a.m. Leave for Memorial Service on the Mountain\n11:00 a.m. Memorial Service at Original Battlefield (two miles away on gravel road)\n11:00 a.m. Annual “Swap\, Shop and Trade Meet” at the tent on the right side of the Barn\n12:15 p.m. Cavalry competition on the field\n12:30 p.m. Talk to President Lincoln and General Lee in the Barn\n1:00 p.m. Medical demonstration at the medical tent near the Battlefield\n2:00 p.m. Battle of London reenacted\n3:45 p.m. Drawings for pistols and raffles\n4:00 p.m. Camp closes to the public— Last Chance to buy T-Shirts \nVisitors Information\nThere are demonstrations and skits available throughout the day. We encourage families to come early and roam the camps and view demonstrations at the Battle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment. There are many things that reenactos do in camp that are period activities that they would love to share information to the public about. Just be polite and ask them what they are doing. They are usually just waiting for someone to ask them. Visitor FAQs \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”More Visitor Detail”]\nPets must be on a leash. Rethink bringing them as they are often quite scared of the cannons. Dogs especially often do not like the horses and equally the horses sometimes become skittish around barking dogs. \nNo rain dates. Just as in the Civil War\, Battle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment takes place regardless of the weather. Just bring the appropriate attire for the weather. \nOften very small children get scared or the cannon fire hurts their ears. We suggest ear muffs or ear plugs (we usually have ear plugs for sell at the concession area). As for car alarms\, the cannons are so loud and shake the ground so much\, car alarms are usually set off. We ask that you do not set your car alarms while on site. Car alarms sounding are not pleasant for anyone.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nSchool Day Information\nSchool day is targeted between the hours of 9a-2p with a small skirmish on the field directly in front of the barn at noon. Schools need to register by email at nita@wildcatreenactment.org Please include name and contact information for your school representative and the number of children attending and the number of adults. School Day FAQs \nReinactor Information\nWood\, hay\, water\, dance\, and dinner on Saturday is provided for all reenactors. Dinner on Friday is provided to those who participate in school day. Prepaid reenactors are guaranteed a ration of gunpowder and any freebies given away at registration. Walk-ons will get these until supplies run out. Ice will be available for purchase.\nReenactor FAQs | Reenactor Registration \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”More Reenactor Detail”]Reenactors are encouraged to maintain period camps\, attitudes\, attire\, and demonstrations. But the main purpose is to share some history with the spectators\, provide a safe\, fun place for reenactors to do what they do best- reenact. Reenactors should encourage family participation. Many people will experience the Battle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment as their first time on the field.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nSutlers\nWe hope we have a lot of sutlers available. We do try to keep the same kinds of sutlers to no more than two but when there are variety sutlers instead of specialty sutlers it makes it hard. We think that reenactors and the public should be able to shop and see a wide variety of things that would have been available during the Civil War period. Non-period sutlers are allowed also. We put Them on the other side of the barn away from period sutler row. However\, we do try to limit the non-period sutlers to things that might have been available during the time period. In 1860\, Nathan Williams\, whose family would maintain ownership for the next 51 years\, purchased the property. By this time the barracks had disappeared\, due to time as well as scavengers looking for a ready supply of lumber and nails. \nWith the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861\, the area around Fort Frederick once again became important militarily. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal\, which passes one-quarter mile south of the fort (the railroad did not yet exist on this side of the river)\, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on the opposite (then Virginia) side of the river\, became focal points of defense for the Union Army. In December the 1st Maryland Infantry (U.S.) under the command of Colonel John Kenly\, was assigned to protect the canal and guard the fords and ferries of the Potomac River between Four Locks\, to the east\, and Cherry Run\, to the west. Company H of this regiment was ordered to occupy Fort Frederick. On Christmas Day\, 1861\, these troops fought a skirmish with Confederate Cavalry. The skirmish took place along the Potomac River below the fort and the Union troops guarding the river were successful in defending the canal\, but were not able to prevent Confederates from tearing up the railroad on the other side. On January 1\, 1862 another skirmish took place at the Fort\, as Union Troops again repulsed confederates attempting to tear up the railroad. \nFort Frederick continued to be occupied\, and in January 1862\, with the 1st Maryland being redistributed to guard points further west towards Hancock\, Company D replaced Company H here. These troops remained until the end of February\, when they\, along with others\, crossed the Potomac to guard the reconstruction of the B&O Railroad. Also during this period of time Union artillery was placed at the fort and was used against the Confederates in Virginia. \nThis is the last occurrence of the fort’s use by a military command. However\, the area around the fort remained vulnerable to Confederate Raiders through the rest of the war. Hence\, troops frequently passed near the fort and at times occupied grounds now encompassed by the state park. Most notable is October 1862 when a picket of the 12th Illinois Cavalry was assigned to the canal “immediately south of old Fort Frederick.” \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Frederick in the Civil War at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nTags: Fort Frederick in the Civil War\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

The military units we represent are the 1st North Carolina Volunteers (the Bethel Regiment) and the 11th North Carolina Regiment. This allows flexibility to adapt to any reenactment period and still remain historically correct. 1st NC Volunteers often coordinate their efforts with state and national historic sites and events\, such as the Fall Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment. \nAbout The Battle of Fort Macon in 1862\nThe Siege of Fort Macon took place from March 23 to April 26\, 1862\, on the Outer Banks of Carteret County\, North Carolina. It was part of Union Army General Ambrose E. Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition during the American Civil War.\nIn late March\, Major General Burnside’s army advanced on Fort Macon\, a fort that commanded the channel to Beaufort\, 35 miles southeast of New Bern. The Union force engaged the fort with siege works and on April 25 opened an accurate fire on the fort\, soon breaching the masonry walls. Within a few hours the fort’s scarp began to collapse\, and in late afternoon the Confederate commander\, Colonel Moses J. White\, ordered the raising of a white flag. Burnside’s terms of surrender were accepted\, and the Federal troops took possession of the fort the next morning. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fall Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment in Atlantic Beach\, North Carolina. \nTags: Fall Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment\, North Carolina Civil War Reenactment\, North Carolina Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month from March to September at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, FL. \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

It was the first major battle in the Kentucky Campaign. The battle took place on and around what is now the grounds of the Blue Grass Army Depot\, outside Richmond\, Kentucky. Confederates captured over 4\,300 Union troops. Total casualties were 5\,353 (206 killed\, 844 wounded\, and 4\,303 captured or missing) on the Union side\, 451 (78 killed\, 372 wounded\, and one missing) for the Confederates. Re-enactor participation varies by weekend and weather conditions. \nApril to September\nFrom April to September\, on the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each of those months\, Fort Taylor Living History Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience life in the fort as it was during the Civil War. \nLocation\nFort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\n601 Howard England Way\nKey West\, FL 33040 \nMore Information: Kevin Bowes\, kevin.bowes@dep.state.fl.us (305) 292-6850 \nThe park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown\, 365 days a year. The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle.

The festival was started at the suggestion of Mayor Gary Cook of Plymouth\, Indiana. In its start it was only a one day event with a parade and has since grown to a two-day event. The festival has seen over 4\,000 visitors in recent years and continues to grow. Civil War soldiers garrison the Fort and fire cannons during the afternoon at the Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School. The event is sponsored by Reynolds Battery 1st New York Light Artillery. \nAlthough Fort Niagara was far from the action during the war\, it nonetheless saw activity during the conflict. Paroled Union soldiers captured near Mesilla\, N.M.\, arrived at the fort in December 1861 and remained there until October 1862. Later\, the fort’s walls were strengthened against a feared British attack from Canada in support of the Confederacy. The fort’s massive brick walls and sturdy underground casemates date from this period. \nThis Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School training weekend\, whether you wear blue or gray the school is dedicated to one simple goal: the training of reenactors in the safe portrayal of their branch. To a lesser degree\, it is the hope that\, in brotherhood\, we can continue to strive to make this hobby enjoyable and accurate to ourselves\, our comrades\, and the public. Except for general formations for colors\, award presentations\, and guest speakers\, the Fort will be garrisoned\, scheduled\, administered\, and certified by staff from their own school. In other words\, the infantry will run the skirmish school\, the artillery will run the artillery school\, and so on. \nLocation\nOld Fort Niagara\n102 Morrow Plaza\n(in Fort Niagara State Park)\nYoungstown\, NY 14174\n(716) 745-7611 \nFor More Information: Call (716) 745-7611 \nAbout Reynolds’ Battery 1st New York Light Artillery\nEach year the Battery attends events throughout New York State and national events in Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, Ohio and Maryland. Reynolds’ Battery L\, 1st New York Light Artillery is chartered by the New York State Board of Education with the stated purpose and objectives to inform\, instruct and educate the public\nas to the life and trials of a Civil War Artillery soldier during the 1860s. In recognition of the training provided by the Battery to its members and the Reenactment community the 2012 George MacDonald Award for Outstanding Service was presented to Richard Henderson and John Beatty with Reynolds Battery. \nHistory of Reynolds’ Battery 1861 to 1865\nAfter the disaster at Bull Run\, President Lincoln put out a call for 300\,000 more men for service. The Rochester Union Grays\, a New York Militia regiment at the time\, answered the call. Recruiting was done by John A. Reynolds\, Edwin Loder and Charles Anderson\, and men from Monroe\, Ontario and Wayne counties flocked to the recruiting offices to join the artillery regiment. \nOn October 8\, 1861\, 81 men and officers swore an oath to the Union and were mustered into federal service while stationed in Elmira\, NY. Under the direction of the State of New York\, twelve artillery companies were formed with Reynolds’ Battery given the designation of Company L. They transferred to Albany on November 14\, the training ground for all NY State Artillery\, having reached full strength of 115 men. On November 23\, 1861 Company L reported for duty at Camp Barry\, Washington\, D.C. under the command of Captain John A. Reynolds. John Reynolds used his own personal funds as a guarantee to secured the first six Model 1861 3” Ordnance Rifles from the Phoenix Iron Works. These guns would not arrive until May 1862\, but would bring a great deal of fame for Reynolds’ Battery as being the only battery in US Service to have the first six consecutive guns in any series of any cannon in their battery. On February 23\, 1862\, Reynolds’ Battery was assigned to Baltimore\, Maryland to guard the Capital. After six months of waiting\, they were called into action at Harper’s Ferry. \nAbout Old Fort Niagara\nOld Fort Niagara has dominated the entrance to the Niagara River since 1726. In American hands since 1796\, Fort Niagara was recaptured by the British in 1813\, and then ceded to the US a second time in 1815 at the end of the War of 1812. Today\, visitors can discover an amazing collection of military architecture\, including the oldest building in the Great Lakes region: the “French Castle.” The fort is a New York State and National Historic Landmark and hosts several reenactments each year.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nOld Fort Niagara offers a chance to step back in time to an era when great empires struggled for control of North America. Visit original 18th century buildings\, enjoy incredible views and take part in exciting living history programs. The Fort’s Visitor Center offers you introductory exhibits filled with original artifacts and an award-winning 16-minute orientation film. Don’t miss the Fort’s original War of 1812 Flag. \nInside the Fort\, you’ll tour original buildings where Native American\, French\, British and American soldiers lived and worked from the 18th to the 20th centuries. During the summer months you’ll witness musket and artillery firing demonstrations\, go on a guided tour\, see artisans at work and learn about life on the Niagara Frontier during the 18th and early 19th centuries. \nIf you visit during one of our special events\, you’ll meet reenactors who faithfully recreate the lives of past Fort garrisons and depict the struggles that led to the birth of the United States and Canada. If you visit during the off season\, you’ll enjoy self-guided or audio tours and hourly musket demonstrations in addition to the many exhibits and period rooms throughout the Fort. Why not make plans to visit the Fort today? You’ll experience a unique blend of authenticity and drama that brings history alive.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School in Youngstown\, New York in May. \nTags: Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School\, Civil War Artillery School\, Civil War Living History \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Join our re-enactors as they set up tents\, clean their weapons and fire up the blacksmith shop. Climb the circular stairways and experience the harbor view just as the soldiers did in 1861.

We also try and present smaller sections of a larger action on the Brigade level\, where the numbers engaged are actually accurate to the recreation. The tactics\, uniforms\, weapons and ceremonies are all authentic to the Action selected. The result of this ambitious historical military program includes the recreation of Union and Confederate military camps along with civilian camps\, two public battles and a re-enactor only tactical event. \nWhile admission is free\, a voluntary collection will be taken each day of the re-enactment and all proceeds will go toward historical preservation efforts. \nPublic Welcom – Free Admission \nHours: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. rain or shine. \nVisitor’s Schedule (Saturday & Sunday\, subject to change)\nSaturday\n9:00 a.m. Camps and attractions open to public. Hundreds of Reenactors and thousands of spectators come from all over the state and nation each year for this spectacular event. Moorpark Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment activities include four battle reenactments (with cannon and musket fire)\, Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address\, solider and civilian encampments\, Confederate army surrendering to the Union army and period dancing and music. \n[embedyt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aQySI8mSF0&width=650&height=400&[/embedyt] \nCentury Market Fair at Locust Grove\nThe featured battles vary each year\, but are always torn from the pages of history. Much time is spent in planning its reenactment for the time and space available. The Moorpark Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment is presented by the Rotary Club of Moorpark\, and is designed to educate the public about the historical significance of the Civil War and its effect on the United States including the abolishment of slavery. There will also be historic dancing and music playing near the food court. \nThe Encampment\nUnion and Confederate encampments can be visited where various demonstrations occur\, such as blacksmithing\, doctor’s tent\, the chapel\, the use of arms and cooking on an open fire\, etc. The soldiers are in authentic costumes and stay in character as they converse with the public\, transporting them back to the 1860s. The Civilian Camp is right alongside the soldier’s camps. Demonstrations here include many skills needed for day-to-day life in that period\, such as sewing\, weaving\, cooking\, etc. \nSutlers\nSutlers are civilian merchants who sell provisions to an army in the field\, in camp\, or in quarters. Sutlers sold wares from the back of a wagon or a temporary tent\, traveling with an army or to remote military outposts. At the Moorpark Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment\, they will be selling reenacting supplies and uniforms\, shoes\, leather goods\, weapons\, (non-firing\, non-functional)\, and other related items. \nHours: Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission: \nSave money and purchase your tickets online.\nThis year we are offering New Family and VIP Packages AND Coupon Specials. Teachers – Get in the Zone:\nBring American History to Life! To get students to fully appreciate what it was like during the American Civil War\, there is no better way to share those impressions than to take them to a quality Civil War Reenactment\, or encourage them to attend and gather information that they can submit for extra class credit.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nOver the past several years\, we have had a number of educators call and arrange for a group discount in order to take their American History class to our event on Saturday or Sunday. When you see the smiles on their faces and the enthusiasm of the students while they’re learning about events during the War\, you realize what a wonderful educational experience it is for them. They get to see first-hand what a typical Civil War encampment looks like\, the surgeon’s tent\, the soldier’s clothing\, their guns and ammunition\, canons firing\, the thrill of talking to Abraham Lincoln and General Lee\, a typical soldier’s mess\, and they’ll be able to talk to re-enactors\, in full costume and in character. All of this will bring the experience to life for the students. \nIf you haven’t planned a field trip for your history class\, we encourage you to consider our event. There is no better history lesson for your students than to expose them to the look and feel of our American Civil War and the extreme sacrifices that so many made in our Country for the freedoms that we enjoy today as a free Nation. \nOur event committee has approved a special Group Rate. See Group Reservations (20 or more) in the Contact section of this website. Go to “Group Reservations” for more information on ordering your tickets today. \nThere is ample food service\, reasonably priced at our event in our food court along with tables and chairs for keeping your group together. \nOn our website\, you will find several photos that will show you what our event looks like and what your students can expect to see in the encampment. Your students can see both North and South encampments. We expect to have over 700 re-enactors and their families in costume along with a large contingent of Civil War Sutlers\, that were the merchants of that era that followed the encampments. \nWe have also posted a Civil War Questionnaire that your students can complete by gathering information at the event. They have to do interviews\, in many cases\, to gather the information\, so it’s a live learning experience. \nFinally\, you will find links above to two short VIDEO clips\, that we produced\, called Gettysburg. Please click on the links and take a look. They are quality pieces of Abraham Lincoln reciting the Gettysburg address interspersed with battle scenes of past year’s events. It’s quite moving and I would encourage you to play it for your American History class. The other video is quite good too. \nThis event is all about teaching our younger generation of the sacrifices that were made by so many during our American Civil War. And there is no better way to communicate that than by scheduling a field trip to our event and letting us host you and your class to a wonderful learning experience. \nPlease go to Contacts / Group Reservations for more information.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nLocation\nHitch Ranch\n100 West High Street\nMoorpark\, CA 93020\nAccess the Blue and The Gray Civil War Reenactment site at the West end of High street directly opposite the entrance to Moorpark’s Post Office. Walk down our cannon row and touch the actual cannons used to protect this Union stronghold. Tours will be available and public interaction is strongly recommended.

Over the course of the day\, Union troops\, including the 2nd and 99th United States Colored Troops (USCT)\, attempted to charge over the Natural Bridge. Each charge was repulsed by artillery and small arms fire by the Confederate defenders. By days end\, Union forces retreated to the protection of the Federal fleet at St. Marks. Tallahassee became the only Southern Capital east of the Mississippi River not to succumb to military capture by Union Troops during the Civil War. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Natural Bridge Reenactment in March at the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park in Tallahassee\, Florida. \nTags: Battle of Natural Bridge Reenactment\, Reenactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge\, Civil War Battle of Natural Bridge Reenactment\, Florida Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events
