After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, Florida. \nTags: Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\, Fort Zachary Taylor Living History Weekend\, Ft Taylor Living History Weekend \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Every even-numbered year\, Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park hosts the Prairie Grove Battlefield Reenactment. During the first weekend of December (Saturday & Sunday of even numberd year)  there will be many activities including tours through the Union\, Confederate\, and civilian camps along with living history programs. Note that the information is preliminary and based on 2018. This will be updated when available as the event is held only in even years. \n\nPrairie Grove Battlefield Reenactment\nThe park commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Prairie Grove by hosting Arkansas’s largest battle reenactment in even-numbered years during the first weekend of December. Activities include guided tours through Union\, Confederate and civilian camps; military drills conducted by reenactors; cooking\, spinning and lace-making demonstrations; and living history programs. Signs and markers scattered about the park tell stories of a battle fought. Artifacts in a small museum reveal history of both sides of the war. And on the second weekend of October each year\, that silence will be shattered by the Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment. The anniversary reenactment will play out again by host Bryans Battery Reenactment Group and other members of the West Virginia Reenactors Association. The event is open to the public with no admission charge. \nThe weekend includes a reenactment scenario tied to historical facts. The Saturday battle reflects the skirmish at Mill Point leading up to Droop Mountain. The Sunday battle will be the Battle of Droop Mountain itself\, reenacted on a portion of the actual battlefield. An unscripted tactical exercise covering most of the park grounds is scheduled for Saturday. Authentic Sutlers are welcome at Droop Mountain and there is a pre-registration process (see below form link) along with other Sutler and reenactor participation information. \n \nEarly Bird Registration\nPRE-REGISTRATION DATES: The Reenactor registration this year will be $10.00 if post marked\non or before September 1 and $15.00 if post marked after that date or for walk-ons. Averell\, in his second attempt to disrupt the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad at Salem\, Virginia\, faced again the Confederate troops of Brigadier General John Echols. Throughout the morning\, Echols’ smaller confederate army held the high ground and blocked the highway with artillery\, but in the afternoon was overwhelmed by the crushing advance of federal infantry on his left flank. Following the collapse of his lines\, General Echols retreated south into Virginia with the remnants of his command.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFederal Troops occupied Lewisburg on November 7\, 1863\, but being burdened with prisoners and captured livestock\, General Averell elected to return to his headquarters in Beverly\, West Virginia\, waiting until early December to lead a third and ultimately successful attack on the vital railroad. Operations in the Shenandoah Valley in the spring of 1864 drew remaining confederate troops out of West Virginia\, thus leaving the new state securely under the control of the federal government for the remainder of the war.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment on the second weekend of October at the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park near Hillsboro\, West Virginia. \nTags: Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mt Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mt Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Read the entire article. \n\nBattle of Perryville Reenactment\nUnlike other events\, at the Battle of Perryville Reenactment\, you will be on actual ground that the armies of North and South engaged to determine the destiny of Kentucky! Your military leadership is experienced and their primary responsibility is to you and making sure you have an outstanding time while representing and honoring those who fought at Perryville! \nPerryville Battlefield is a nationally significant Civil War site. Although Confederate forces were victorious on the battlefield at Perryville\, the Rebels eventual evacuation of the state forever lost Kentucky’s resources and men for the Confederacy. The Confederate loss of Kentucky along with Lee’s loss at Antietam set the stage for Abraham Lincoln to change the cause and course of the war. We strive to educate the visiting public on the key role that Perryville played in the Civil War. The battle would settle Kentucky’s allegiance as well as help to define national politics which forever changed our nation. \nRecreating small sections of the original engagement during the Battle of Perryville Reenactment is one form of interpretation used by Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site to fulfill its mission of preserving and interpreting history. \nThe Battle of Perryville Reenactment takes place on the first ‘full’ weekend of October\, including Friday – Sunday. There will be an all day unscripted tactical on Friday\, a sunrise battle and “The Cornfield” on Saturday. The “Fight for the Bottom’s Farm” occurs on Sunday afternoon. (Detailed battle descriptions are included in the information on this page.) \nAdmission\nAdult: $4.00; Adult Group (10 or more) $3.50\nChild ( 7 to 12) $3.00 (6 and under FREE); Child Group (10 or more) $2.50\nMilitary & Senior discount $3.50 \nLocation\nPerryville Battlefield State Historic Site\n1825 Battlefield Road\nPerryville\, KY 40468 \nFor More Information: 859-332-8631 friendsofperryville@gmail.com \nBattle of Perryville Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nReenactor and Visitor Information\nFor detailed reenactor information (artillery\, cavalry\, infantry)\, civilians and sutlers\, refer to the Official Website and select the navigation buttons labeled for the information you need. \nWho can participate in the Battle of Perryville Reenactment and where do we camp?\nEveryone who has an impression that meets the guidelines may participant either as a military or civilian reenactor. You may participate with a reenactment unit\, mess or as an individual. There will be camping areas for campaigners\, fixed military camps\, and an authentic civilian area. There will be a mixed camp for civilians and military camping together. There is no modern camping on the park. Due to the nature of the Battle of Perryville Reenactment we cannot permit walk-ons. \nBattle of Perryville Reenactment Hosting Organization\nThe Kentucky Department of Parks is hosting the event. The military organizations that are responsible to the Kentucky Department of Parks are the Western Federal Blues\, and the Southern Division. They successfully planned and executed the 150th Anniversary Event and we are pleased to have them put forth the time\, trouble and expense to help us raise much needed preservation funding for the battlefield. \nBattle of Perryville Reenactment scenarios?\nIt is very easy to plan the scenarios for Perryville. The generals wrote them 150 plus years ago. The park historian has each army’s movement broken down into 15 minute increments and the scenarios will be scripted to those movements. \nThe Cornfield: Saturday 2:00 PM\nThis scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. While General Daniel Donelson’s brigade was moving forward into attack position\, Brigadier General William R. Terrill’s Union Brigade was in the process of forming their line on the “Open Knob”. Maney’s Brigade\, assisted by Wharton’s Cavalry\, attacked with vigor\, rolling over Terrill’s regiments as they arrived on the field piecemeal. \nThe Fight for Bottom’s Barn: Sunday 1:00 PM\nThis battle scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 3:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. Since about 10:00 in the morning\, William H. Lytle’s brigade had taken up position on the right flank of Union 1st Corps commanded by General Alexander M. McCook. The 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry\, supported by the 15th Kentucky infantry\, were positioned in Henry P. Bottom’s barn yard overlooking Henry Bottom’s House. Since there appeared little threat to their front\, another regiment\, the 42nd Indiana\, was sent forward to the semi-dry bed of Doctor’s Creek to rest\, boil some coffee\, and fill their empty canteens in the drought-stricken area. Suddenly\, the calm was broken by a fusillade of Confederate artillery shot and shell landing all around. Soon after\, two heavily supported Confederate Infantry brigades came out of the woods and attacked towards the 3rd Ohio and the 15th Kentucky\, driving the hapless 42nd Indiana in a panic from the creek bed. \nThe Confederates had problems too. Bushrod R. Johnson’s Confederate brigade was assigned to attack this area. The Confederates became mixed and disorganized by the cliffs along the creek\, just to the north of the road as well as other terrain features. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Perryville Reenactment on the first full weekend of October at the Perryville Battlefield in Perryville\, Kentucky. \nTags: Battle of Perryville Reenactment\, Battle of Perryville Civil War Reenactment\, Perryville Battlefield Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Federal forces advanced from Knoxville and arrived on the outskirts of Blountville. Union forces quickly occupied the heights overlooking the west side of town; this chosen site was the cemetery – the “City of the Dead”. Union cannons were aligned on the gravesites of the locals and their slaves alike. Reacting to the threats\, Southern forces formed artillery on a knoll near the present-day Blountville Middle School; another line was established by Rebel forces on a nearby hillside in front of the Masonic Hall\, now the site of the maintenance building for the Sullivan County School System. The battle of artillery and cavalry began in earnest at lunchtime Union guns offered the initial volley with the Court House as the first target. In only a few minutes\, the Court House was burning.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More About The Battle of Blountville”]Though casualties were light for both armies\, the town was devastated\, with countless homes and businesses burned to the ground by fires started by the explosions of Federal guns. For four hours\, the battle raged when Union forces dislodged the Confederates who began a withdrawal to present-day Bluff City. The Confederates’ withdrawal was a pre-planned surprise counter-attack\, with fresh Confederate troops awaiting the pursuing Federals. The plan was not destined for success when Union forces discovered the Confederate plot and refused battle; the men in blue retreated to Blountville. All of the Federal forces returned toward Knoxville within two days. That fateful little day left a burning town – a burned jail\, a gutted Court House\, businesses and homes destroyed – Only a few historic structures and homes remained. \nLeft behind were the dead and wounded from both sides as well as a town destroyed. Here on this ground\, as well as in Gettysburg\, men fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Eventually\, both armies would withdraw from the immediate area\, but Blountville\, like much of the South\, was left smoldering\, and its citizens weeping; thus\, this once peaceful village would never be the same.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nBattle of Blountville Civil War Military ParkThe Battle of Blountville occurred largely in and around the historic town of Blountville\, Tennessee. Recognizing the importance of commemorating the battle\, Tennessee State Representative Tony Shipley spearheaded the move to establish a Civil War Park commemorating the Battle of Blountville. In February 2011\, Sullivan County passed a resolution authorizing the Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism to assist the Battle of Blountville Civil War Park Executive Committee in development of the park in the interest of promoting heritage tourism. The Battle of Blountville Civil War Park and its development will primarily begin in the Historic District of downtown Blountville as recognized on the National Register of Historic Sites. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment in September at the Old Hawley Farm in Blountville\, Tennessee. \n \nTags: Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment\, Battle of Blountville Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment\, Tennessee Civil War Reenactment\, Blountville Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Park entrance fees apply. \nOne Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick will give visitors a look at life in the fort as volunteers exhibit the varied roles the Fort played during the French and Indian War\, the American Revolution\, and the Civil War. \nThough Fort Frederick isn’t famous for ‘Heroic Last Stands’ or battles\, its re-use throughout history\, for such a variety or reasons makes it unique. Activities and living history encampments will give visitors a look into the small heroics of history; the daily lives of the people who served throughout these much larger conflicts. \nHighlights of One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick include: \n\nFlag Raising\nFrench and Indian War Era Military Drill\n“Sundry women” – women’s roles in the 18th Century\n18th Century Military Field Music\nVolunteer Company Drill\nCole’s Maryland Cavalry (Union) in the Civil War (Saturday ONLY)\nAmerican Revolutionary War Drill\n“Forsaking their Plantation” Maryland Refugees during Pontiac’s War of 1763\nThe Life of a British Prisoner of War during the American Revolution\nCivil War Military drill\nFlag Lowering\n\nAdmission Fees\nThere is a service charge of $3 per car for Maryland residents and $5 per car for non-Maryland residents for this event. Disabled access is available; however\, most of the event activities are situated on grassy areas that may present difficult rolls or walks. Please dress for inclement weather or hot sunny days. \nLocation\nFort Frederick State Park\n11100 Fort Frederick Road\nBig Pool\, MD 21711\n301-842-2155 \nThe One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick program takes a deeper look at the uses of the Fort and the roles of the people there\, during the French and Indian War\, The American Revolution\, and the Civil War. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. For more details and program times contact the Park Visitor Center at 301-842-2155. \nFood\, gift\, and souvenir items will be available for sale at Captain Wort’s Sutler Shop. In addition to programs in the Fort\, the Parks visitor centre and exterior museums have more exhibits about its history\, including uniforms\, artifacts\, and a video. \nFort Frederick is located off of Rt 70 exit 12 at State Route 56\, Big Pool\, MD. For more information about the Garrison Weekend or other Fort Frederick activities\, please call the park at 301-842-2155 during the office hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm weekends. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nTags: One Fort: Three Wars at Fort Frederick State Park\, French & Indian War Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events\nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events\nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced. Confederate forces approached Tunnel Hill twice more during the campaign – Wheeler’s cavalry in mid-August\, and Hood’s infantry after the fall of Atlanta in mid-October – but neither time did they attempt to damage the tunnel. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment in Tunnel Hill\, Georgia. \nTags: Battle of Tunnel Hill Reenactment\, Battle of Tunnel Hill Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

It’s a unique opportunity to relive a turning point in our country’s history\, and one that few reenactments can beat. \nA Weekend in the Past\nAn average morning at the Jackson Civil War Muster begins with battalion drills from both sides\, Union and Confederate. Events follow in the Historic Village of Jacksonburgh\, a battle encampment re-creation that houses historian lectures\, impersonators and period music in the hours leading up to the battle. The main attraction features 1\,500 reenactors armed with weapons\, uniforms and personalities that would have been commonplace during the Civil War. Guests and participants often join for a concert\, a military ball and an artillery “night fire” when the battels are over. Admission is free for spectators. For more information and a detailed schedule of the two-day event\, visit CivilWarMuster.org. \nJoin the Battle – Reenactor Information\nEnthusiastic reenactors are what brings the Jackson Civil War Muster to life. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Visit the Monument at the Site Placed By the White Sulphur Rifles. This Battle was the First Confederate Victory following their devastating defeat at Gettysburg.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis battle has also been called the Battle of White Sulphur Springs and the “Battle of the Law Books” since the Union Army was attempting to go to Lewisburg and capture a copy of the Virginia Supreme Court’s law books and court documents. The Virginia Court had used Lewisburg as a summer courthouse and the Federals wanted to turn those captured materials over to the new State of West Virginia’s Courts. The Federal loss at the Battle of Dry Creek prevented the capture of those court materials.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Dry Creek Reenactment at the Greenbrier State Forest near Caldwell\, West Virginia. \nTags: Battle of Dry Creek Reenactment\, Battle of Dry Creek Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events
