Reenactors and Civil War buffs will converge on Princeton from all over the Midwest for two days of Civil War battle re-enactments\, storytelling\, music\, dance and more. Shadows of the Blue and Gray presents a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts to not only learn about life during the 1860s\, but to actually immerse themselves in a sort of living play about the Civil War era. \n\nShadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War Festival\nSpectators will smell the gun powder and hear the cannon fire of a real life Civil War battle skirmish. At the Shadows Of The Blue and Gray Civil War Festival they’ll witness the carnage that comes as a result of battle\, and see up close the agony of soldiers being treated in a makeshift field hospital. \nThe Shadows Of The Blue and Gray Civil War Festival is not all war and gore. Festival-goers also will have the chance to watch how period artisans make things such as candles\, brooms\, clothes and blacksmith goods. They’ll be able to shake hands with President and Mrs. Lincoln or watch Clara Barton demonstrate common nursing techniques. A costume-optional dance will take place under the stars and children will be invited to participate in an interactive scavenger hunt. \nParticipant Amenities\nWe are offering bounties to all that take the field. Infantry will receive rifle caps. Artillery will receive powder and money\, as well as bounty for each horse that takes the field. Saturday night we are offering a free dinner to all our reenactor friends that register\, and an on site ball with period music. As always straw\, hay\, firewood and water will be avaiable. The American Civil War battle reenactment is held on the actual battlefield of the 1864 Battle of Droop mountain\, at the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park located several miles South of the Town of Hillsboro\, West Virginia along U.S. highway 219 at the top of Droop Mountain. \nThe Droop Mountain Battleground is quiet today. Signs and markers scattered about the park tell stories of a battle fought. Artifacts in a small museum reveal history of both sides of the war. And on the second weekend of October each year\, that silence will be shattered by the Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment. The generals wrote them 150 plus years ago. The park historian has each army’s movement broken down into 15 minute increments and the scenarios will be scripted to those movements. \nThe Cornfield: Saturday 2:00 PM\nThis scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. While General Daniel Donelson’s brigade was moving forward into attack position\, Brigadier General William R. Terrill’s Union Brigade was in the process of forming their line on the “Open Knob”. Maney’s Brigade\, assisted by Wharton’s Cavalry\, attacked with vigor\, rolling over Terrill’s regiments as they arrived on the field piecemeal. \nThe Fight for Bottom’s Barn: Sunday 1:00 PM\nThis battle scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 3:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. Since about 10:00 in the morning\, William H. Lytle’s brigade had taken up position on the right flank of Union 1st Corps commanded by General Alexander M. McCook. The 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry\, supported by the 15th Kentucky infantry\, were positioned in Henry P. Bottom’s barn yard overlooking Henry Bottom’s House. Since there appeared little threat to their front\, another regiment\, the 42nd Indiana\, was sent forward to the semi-dry bed of Doctor’s Creek to rest\, boil some coffee\, and fill their empty canteens in the drought-stricken area. Suddenly\, the calm was broken by a fusillade of Confederate artillery shot and shell landing all around. Artillery pieces may not be pulled back to camp with a modern vehicle until\nthe camps have closed to the public.\nOnly full-sized artillery pieces are allowed. Carriages must have 57 inch wheels. No mortars or mountain howitzers are allowed.\nArtillery pieces must participate in the battle both days to qualify for a bounty. Demonstration pieces do not qualify for bounties.\nAll scenarios must be approved by the U.S. and C.S. Commanders before the reenactment. Unscripted hand-to-hand combat is prohibited. Do not point firearms at any person.\nYou must provide adequate supervision of powder stores. Powder\, charges\, cartridges\, and primers must be stored in special containers at a safe distance from\ncampfires.\nParticipants under age 14 may not carry or fire black powder weapons of any kind. Participants 14 and 15 years of age may carry black powder weapons with a parent or guardian. Children and civilian reenactors are not permitted on the field during re-enactments\, except for functional musicians (boys 14 or older who can actually play a drum\, fife or bugle). Boys under 14 are not to serve as color bearers during battle re-enactments. Civilian reenactors may request prior written approval from Wade House event coordinator\, Jim Willaert\, before the event to participate in battle re-enactments.\nMounted cavalry units must station at least one unit member near their unit’s horses when public visitors are in camp. Horses will be inspected by cavalry commanders for health problems before being allowed to participate. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health\, horses are not allowed within 500 feet of food concession areas.\nThere will be no unscripted “tactical” combat of any type during the event. Firearms will not be discharged at any time after sundown. Televisions\, portable radios\, boom boxes\, music devices\, and propane lanterns are prohibited. Cell phone use is restricted to emergencies only (or out of sight of the public). Modern cameras and video recorders may not be carried onto the battlefield or used during a battle re-enactment. Please use cameras discreetly in the camps during public hours.\nDo not use obvious 21st century adornments in your personal impression\,\nincluding sunglasses\, wristwatches\, or other modern jewelry. Federal forces advanced from Knoxville and arrived on the outskirts of Blountville. Union forces quickly occupied the heights overlooking the west side of town; this chosen site was the cemetery – the “City of the Dead”. Union cannons were aligned on the gravesites of the locals and their slaves alike. Reacting to the threats\, Southern forces formed artillery on a knoll near the present-day Blountville Middle School; another line was established by Rebel forces on a nearby hillside in front of the Masonic Hall\, now the site of the maintenance building for the Sullivan County School System. The battle of artillery and cavalry began in earnest at lunchtime Union guns offered the initial volley with the Court House as the first target. In only a few minutes\, the Court House was burning.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More About The Battle of Blountville”]Though casualties were light for both armies\, the town was devastated\, with countless homes and businesses burned to the ground by fires started by the explosions of Federal guns. For four hours\, the battle raged when Union forces dislodged the Confederates who began a withdrawal to present-day Bluff City. The Confederates’ withdrawal was a pre-planned surprise counter-attack\, with fresh Confederate troops awaiting the pursuing Federals. The plan was not destined for success when Union forces discovered the Confederate plot and refused battle; the men in blue retreated to Blountville. All of the Federal forces returned toward Knoxville within two days. That fateful little day left a burning town – a burned jail\, a gutted Court House\, businesses and homes destroyed – Only a few historic structures and homes remained. \nLeft behind were the dead and wounded from both sides as well as a town destroyed. Here on this ground\, as well as in Gettysburg\, men fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood recuperated at the house after his leg was amputated\, and the leg was buried nearby. Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced. The best part is once you purchase your bottle (they offer a variety of sizes) you can take it back and have it refilled at a discounted price. Usually very close to the root beer stand is the kettle corn. Don’t worry you won’t have any problem finding it. Just take a deep sniff and follow your nose to the sweet smell of cooking kettle corn. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Bring something to sit on while watching the battle\, blankets or camp chairs work fine. Bring or be prepared to purchase water. There is little shade at Cascades Falls Park and you will want to stay hydrated. Wear\, and bring\, sunscreen and slip on your comfy walking shoes. Bleacher tickets cannot be purchased without a general admission ticket. Seating is first come\, first served. The seating is not shaded. The bleachers will open one hour before each battle and must be vacated after each battle for security\, inspection\, and maintenance—the battles last approximately one hour. The bleacher seating is limited. Order your tickets while there is still seating available. There will be troop movement over the entire field; everyone will see some distant as well as close-up action. Bringing a pair of binoculars will help you see in the distance.Your tickets are good for the entire day. ONLY hand-held recorders can be used in spectator areas. No one may stand in front of lawn chair areas for filming and of course\, you may not walk out on the Battlefield at any time to take photos. Umbrellas must be lowered during battles. Interpretation of these guidelines is the exclusive right of the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee (GAC) and its staff. \nYoung children are often afraid of very loud noises and being close to the cannons can be a scary experience for kids under 5 years old. Cotton helps dull the noise and may be a good idea for anyone near the big guns. \nHandicap Parking is available at the Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment event site. There are also golf cart shuttles that can transport individuals with mobility issues from the ticket booth to the spectator/seating area. Most event activities are fairly close in proximity. Please be aware the Gettysburg Reenactment takes place on open farm fields and the terrain will be bumpy in some areas. \nStrollers are permitted on the event site but may have a more difficult time maneuvering on this farm ground. Strollers are not permitted in the grandstands; however\, stroller parking is available under the grandstands. The Gettysburg Anniversary Committee and its staff assume no liability for strollers and other personal property left unattended under the grandstands or any other location on the event site. \nBicycles may be ridden to the parking areas\, but not on site. We do not provide security for bicycles and advise against bringing them\, but this is your decision. \nBackpacks\, Coolers & Large Bags – As a safety precaution for all persons attending the event NO backpacks\, cooler or large bags will be permitted through the event gates. Please leave these items at home or in your vehicle so you do not have to return them to your vehicle. We understand that you may need to carry certain personal items–in a small open-type bag with straps usually works best. All carry items including camera cases will be subject to search by security prior to entering the event. Please allow extra time so we can enhance your safety! The organizers of the Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment event have the right to refuse entry to any person refusing such an inspection. \nFood & Beverages – There will be a variety of foods and beverages available for purchase at the reenactment site\, such as\, hamburgers\, hot dogs\, pizza\, pulled pork BBQ\, Italian sausage\, pit beef\, pit ham\, French fries\, fresh fruit\, water\, sodas\, lemonade etc.\nNo Pets are allowed on site\, in camps\, or in the parking areas.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nReenactor Rules\nAll reenactors must affiliate with a unit to participate. The command staff will attempt to assign individuals registering without a unit affiliation to units but this does not guarantee acceptance by that unit. It is the individual’s responsibility to affiliate and if no recognized unit is found the individual will not be able to participate. Affiliation means that the unit or individual will be under the control of\, camp with\, be inspected by and fall in for battle with that recognized unit. The event Commanders and organizers will make the final determination if a registration is accepted. \n\nAll safety regulations will be strictly enforced through a provost and/or appropriate safety personnel. Any violation of these rules will be grounds for an individual or unit to be removed from the field.\nAnyone under the age of 13 will not be permitted on the Battlefield. NO EXCPTIONS!\nNo one under the age of 16 will be permitted to carry a rifle on the field.\n\nGettysburg Reenactment Impression Standards\nThe Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment is a very special and significant commemorative event for the reenactment community\, the visitor\, and the Gettysburg community. The eyes of the nation and the world are upon us. In order to promote event integrity and honor\, and to respect your fellow reenactors and provide an accurate portrayal to the public\, the organizers\, and military command request your cooperation by heeding the following authenticity standards:[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read Impression Standard Details”] \n\nAll clothing must accurately represent the fashion and style of 1863\, e.g.\, natural fibers\, period cut and color.\nModern plastic glasses frames are not permitted.\nNo modern shoes and no sneakers.\nNo specialty impressions without the approval of the event sponsors. This includes portrayals of Lee\, Jackson\, Lincoln\, Grant\, Clara Barton\, etc. If you have any doubts\, please ask.\nWomen portraying soldiers in the ranks should make every reasonable effort to hide their gender. Hundreds\, if not thousands\, of women passed themselves off as men in order to serve as soldiers during the war—on both sides\, and we will never know exactly how many did so because their disguises were so good. Honor them. If any Army or event volunteer (as above) determines the female gender at not less than 15 feet\, that individual will be asked to leave the field/ranks.\nHair should be worn as appropriate to 1863.\nAs a compromise to modern safety\, a minimum number of period MILITARY or Hospital Ice Angels (2-3) will be permitted on the battlefield for each authorized battalion. Each Ice Angel must be at least 16 years of age. Proper uniform will be required. Dresses for the ladies will not be allowed on the field.\nDo not wear any uniforms or insignia that would not have appeared at Gettysburg.\nThe classic “campaigner” impression is suitable for this event. Shoes shall be worn! Failure to do so will result in removal from the event.\nA dirty musket is rarely\, if ever\, appropriate and may\, in fact\, constitute a safety violation.\nAll anachronisms (cots\, coolers\, sweat pants\, etc.) must be hidden inside tents at all times.
