Only Period tents are permitted in the Village. \nAbout the Old Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment\nEach June\, picturesque Old Bedford Village plays host to the clash of the Blue and the Gray during their annual Old Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment and Living History event. \nOld Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment Mini Gallery\n\n \nWhile America’s deadliest war never actually reached the town of Bedford\, as General Robert E Lee’ Confederate Army invaded Pennslyvania in the summer of 1863\, the threat facing this area was very real. Just north of Bedford near the town of Loysburg\, a network of defensive trenches dug to protext Loysburg Gap survives to this day. The trenches were occupied in June of 1863 as residents of the area feared the invasion could target the farms and livestock of Morrison’s Cove and the railroad in Altoona to support Confederate troop in the field. \nEach year\, the Old Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment features hundreds of reenactors from state across the region. These living historians have a true passion for the Civil War time period they portray\, and have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours researching what and where to obtain the equipment and knowledge needed to portray the life of the common soldier serving in that war. \nDuring the Old Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment\, visitors can visit the camp sites of soldiers serving in both the Union and Confederate armies. They can witness what camp life was like\, learn how the soldiers passed the time when they weren’t marching or fighting\, and speak with the reenactors (and don’t worry\, they do like to talk about this favorite topic). Civilian life is also represented as many women and children also attend the event in period attire. Each afternoon a battle reenactment will unfold\, and visitors will have the opportunity to see first-hand the sights\, sounds\, and smells of battle. No history book or television documentary can give a viewer as realistic an experience as attending a Civil War reenactment in person. \nWhat makes the Old Bedford Village Civil War Reenactment even more special is the Village itself. Because of the many original 17th and 18th century structures on site\, Old Bedford Village truly presents the image of a town that ha been overrun by two great armies\, with residents forced from their homes as soldiers move in\, camp in their yards\, and procure their food and livestock. Visitors can tour the building. Some will be occupied by the reenactors while others will feature Old Bedford Village’s skilled tradesmen and artisans who can explain their craft such as blacksmithing\, spinning and weaving\, tin smithing\, candle making and more. \nAbout Old Bedford Village\nCross the Claycomb covered bridge and step back in time to the 18th century at Old Bedford Village. Stroll through the Village of over 36 period workshops and log cabins for a real immersion experience. Call in on our period clothed crafts men and women\, learn about Bedford’s historic past…allow time for a light snack in the Village Tavern\, perhaps a horse and buggy ride around the Village? Be sure to check out dates for our special events on our website at www.oldbedfordvillage.com If you’d like a new way to look at history\, come see a historical reenactment at Old Bedford Village\, we’ll get you so close to the past\, you’ll be able to touch\, smell and hear it! Over 14\,000 men and women mustered into service for the Union Army at this site in which 1\,480 did not return to Michigan buried in the battle field cemeteries in the South. Historic Fort Wayne is one of a handful of star forts left in the US. The Fort is also one of few remaining sites\, in Michigan\, where soldiers from the Civil War trained. \nAbout The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition\nThe Historic Fort Wayne Coalition is dedicated to preserving the history of Michigan men and women who served their country between 1845 and 1973 who either sent material to or personally passed through Historic Fort Wayne as a place of induction to United States military service. We are busy helping the Fort’s caretakers\, the City of Detroit Recreation Department with this effort in two major ways. First\, we present high quality events that provide ways for the public to enjoy Historic Fort Wayne and see glimpses of how it would have looked when it was garrisoned. We are also very busy preserving and restoring as much of the structures and facilities as possible on the Fort grounds. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Historic Fort Wayne Civil War Days will at Fort Wayne in Detroit\, Michigan. \nTags: Historic Fort Wayne Civil War Days\, Civil War Days at Historic Fort Wayne\, Michigan Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

On May 28\, 1861\, Col. George Porterfield and his Confederate troops arrived in Philippi\, where they camped or were quartered in town. Neighbors and families were already divided on the question of secession. There were at least 750\, if not upwards of 2\,000 troops. At daylight on June 3\, two columns of Union forces\, with perhaps 3\,000 men\, arrived from Grafton under the command of Col. Ebenezer Dumont and Col. Benjamin Kelley. A Union victory\, it was the first organized land action of the war\, though generally viewed as a skirmish rather than a battle. \nMistaking a pistol shot by a Mrs. Humpreys on the hill above the town as a signal to start the battle\, the Union troops fired on the Confederates with two brass six-pound Napoleon cannons. The Confederates routed to a big rock south of town and departed in good order to Belington and ultimately to Beverly. \nThe Original Blue and Gray Renuion\nOn June 3\, 1911 the first “Home Coming Week” ever held in Barbour County of the “Blue and Gray Soldiers” who participated in the 1861 battle was held. The program included speeches\, band concerts\, “public talks by Old Soldiers”\, entertainment\, fireworks\, parachute jumps\, parades\, a hot-air balloon ascension\, and a “Sham Battle conducted by the State Militia.” In 1988\, the City of Philippi published a “Call to Arms” to plan for an annual Blue & Gray Reunion to begin the first week of June\, 1989. \nBlue and Gray Reunion – Battle of Philippi Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nToday’s reunion includes Sutlers and crafts tents\, a parade\, encampments for re-enactors from both sides of the war\, artillery and small arms demonstrations\, a choir concert\, Civil War Ball\, and of course\, a re-enactment of the first land battle of the Civil War. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nLocation: Downtown Philippi\, WV \nFor More Information\nMail: PO Box 911\, Philippi\, WV 26416\nPhone: 304-457-3773\nEmail: information@blueandgrayreunion.org\nPhilippi area contact: CVB at 304-457-3700 \nBlue and Gray Reeunion Featured Events (subject to change)\n(Check daily schedules for day and time) \n\nHorse and Buggy Parade\nWalking History (for adults) joining Kids’ Day\nPickin’ Porch – all weekend on Courthouse Square\nOpening Ceremonies – Thursday\nGrand Opening and Blue & Gray Community Choir\nHorse and Buggy Parade\nKids’ Day/Walking History – Friday\n25-30 Learning Stations\nVisit with General Stonewall Jackson\nGrand Parade\n5K Race\nKayak and Stand Up Paddle Board Races\nPie Contest at the Gazebo\nCivil War Ball\nConfederate and Union Camps open for the public\nReenactment – First Land Battle of Civil War\nReenactment-Hanger Amputation\nCrafters Park and Food Vendors on Courthouse Square\nLive entertainment – at the Gazebo all weekend; SUMMARY:Fort Taylor Living History Weekend

The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, Florida. \nTags: Fort Taylor Living History Weekend\, Fort Zachary Taylor Living History Weekend\, Ft Taylor Living History Weekend \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Since 1999\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment has become famous for its aggressive battles and surprise tacticals. Extensive recreations of breastworks and Van den Corput’s redoubt also await your visit. \nReenactors\nBoth Federal and Confederate camps are located in reenactor-friendly sites within easy reach of the sutlers\, vendors\, and reenactor parking. On Sunday morning\, a non-denominational church service will be conducted on-site at the Social Fly for all reenactors. \nVisitors\nVarious civilian activities will be conducted during the Battle of Reseca Reenactment. Period sutlers\, authentic civilian and refugee camps\, and modern concessions will be available. On Saturday morning\, all reenactors are encouraged to attend the Memorial Service at the Resaca Confederate Cemetery located at the south end of the farm. The cemetery is the final resting place of 450 soldiers and is one of the first two such Confederate Cemeteries established in our nation. Later Saturday evening\, a period social and dance will be held for all reenactors\, with period music. \n \nSchool Tours\nDuring Friday morning prior to the Battle of Reseca Reenactment\, free school tours will be provided for our area youth. This educational service is for all of our area public and private schools\, home schools\, church youth groups\, and scout troops who would enjoy learning more about the American Civil War. The first weekend of May every year\, the whole town of Jefferson\, Texas is transported back to that time when the Civil War was coming to a close. For many years\, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce hosted the Battle of Port Jefferson\, a Civil War Reenactment\, possibly the largest in the state of Texas. This year\, the Chamber is supporting Target Jefferson Texas\, a Red River Campaign Objective\, in conjunction with the Great Locomotive Chase held by the Historic Jefferson Railway. In these encampments\, you’ll see cooking items from the past being used today. In fact\, everything is of a historic nature\, from the tents to the cots and bed-rolls\, buckets\, pots and dishware from the past. You can see these tent camps all over town\, stop by and talk to the re-enactors if you get a chance – they love to share with civilians. Be sure to stop by any of the Sutler’s tents to buy some of their wares. \nThe battles will take place as the train stops along the river in the RV Park. The train will depart the depot in downtown Jefferson on Saturday at 11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 and 5:00; and on Sunday at 11:30 and 1:00. The train will stop on its way out to the RV Park at the Battlefield for about 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Then the train will continue out of the RV park\, turn around and come back. It will stop again at the Battlefield for another 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Reenactors can engage for a longer period at their discretion. The Virginia\, a replica ironclad with five working cannons\, joins the skirmish as it fires its cannons from the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou River. \nJefferson Civil War Days Mini-Gallery\n\n\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Summary Schedule (subject to change)”]\nFriday\n9:00 – 2:30 at Diamond Don RV Park\nSchool Day Civil War Living History\, “Day of Learning”\, complete with a gunboat and cannons. \nFriday Narrated Historical Day Tours: 9:30\, 10:30\, 11:30\, and 12:30\nThe Great Locomotive Chase/The Andrews Raid\, aboard a live steam train.\nTrain departs from Diamond Don RV Park. \nSaturday\n2:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 & 5:00 Train departs downtown Jefferson depot \nSunday\n1:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30 & 1:00 Narrated Historical Train Day Tours\, scouting probes & skirmishes & Naval Battle. \nJefferson was the shipping port to the Mississippi. This boat will fire on the troops on the shore along the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou. Troops will defend the passengers on the train during the reenactment of the Andrews Raid and locomotive chase\, while also defending the Port of Jefferson Texas. Once a very important Water Port in Texas. This boat was commissioned by the people of Jefferson’s Historic Train company to add one more element to the events of the season. \nHistory Behind the Reenactment\nThe Union mounted several attempts to capture the trans-Mississippi regions of Texas and Louisiana from 1862 until the war’s end. With ports to the east under blockade or captured\, Texas in particular became a blocking-running haven. Referred to as the “back door” of the Confederacy. Texas and western Louisiana continued to provide cotton crops shipped to Europe by means of blockade runners in exchange for supplies. The Union’s disastrous Red River Campaign in western Louisiana\, including a defeat at the Battle of Mansfield\, effectively ended the Union’s final invasion attempt of the region until the fall of the Confederacy. Had the Union soldiers not been stopped at Mansfield\, they would surely have been looking upriver to Jefferson\, a major river port of the time. Jefferson now takes that history and brings it to life each year. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Jefferson Civil War Days on the first full weekend of May in Jefferson\, Texas. \nTags: Jefferson Civil War Days\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Days\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment\, Naval Battle of Port Jefferson Reenactment\, Port Jefferson Naval Reenactment\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Buchanan Farmers provided the Confederate quartermaster with beef\, cotton\, yarn and corn. Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort\, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery. The unit distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. \nFederal General David Hunter marched through Buchanan on June 13\, 1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg. The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. Period letters tell how McCausland burned the covered bridge over the James River before leaving igniting a fire which destroyed close to thirty buildings. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy\, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill\, the Anchorage\, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Buchanan Civil War History Weekend in downtown Buchanon\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Buchanan Civil War History Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Days\, Buchanan Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

SUMMARY:Fort Taylor Living History Weekend

Walk down our cannon row and touch the actual cannons used to protect this Union stronghold. Tours will be available and public interaction is strongly recommended. Re-enactor participation varies by weekend and weather conditions. \nYear Round\nOn the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each of month\, Fort Taylor Living History Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience life in the fort as it was during the Civil War. \nLocation\nFort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\n601 Howard England Way\nKey West\, FL 33040 \nMore Information: Kevin Bowes\, kevin.bowes@dep.state.fl.us (305) 292-6850 \nThe park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown\, 365 days a year.

McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac landed at Ft. Monroe and Newport News Point and began making their way towards Richmond. By early April\, they had been stopped by General John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, while reinforcements from General Joseph Johnston’s army began arriving from northern Virginia. Both sides settled into a siege along the Warwick River and around Yorktown. \nCome see this historic siege recreated at locations impacted by armies from both sides. This event will take place on Saturday 10-5 pm and Sunday 11-3 pm. \nEndview Plantation:\nThroughout the Civil War\, refugees fled as armies moved through the countryside. These families didn’t know when or if they would be able to return home and if they did\, what they would find. Local families such as the Curtis family of Endview and the Lee family of Lee Hall fled west and wouldn’t return until the war was over three years later. At Endview see living historians portraying civilians fleeing the armies as they move up the Peninsula. Endview Plantation is located at 362 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 887-1862. \nLee Hall Mansion:\nServing as the Confederate Headquarters of Gen. John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, Lee Hall would’ve been the epicenter of the Confederate resistance to McClellan’s Union army with staff officers busy keeping the army running. As Gen. Joseph Johnston’s army began to arrive from northern Virginia to reinforce Magruder’s troops\, many regiments passed by Lee Hall or camped on its property before moving on to their places in the Confederate fortifications. One such unit was the 3rd South Carolina Infantry. See living historians portraying Magruder’s staff and the 3rd SC Infantry. Lee Hall Mansion is located at 163 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 888-3371. \nNewport News Park:\nAs soldiers from both sides settled into a siege\, the 15th North Carolina Infantry was sent to Dam #1 (one of 5 dams used to make the Warwick River impassable) to build more fortifications and protect the dam from a possible crossing. On April 16th\, the 3rd Vermont Infantry tried to cross the river before being forced back by overwhelming Confederate reinforcements. See living historians portraying members of the 15th NC and 3rd VT infantry at the original site near the Discovery Center. Newport News Park is located at 13560 Jefferson Ave. Newport News\, VA 23603. Follow Constitution Way to the Discovery Center. Banks and Confederate forces\, led by Major General Richard Taylor. \nThe battle was essentially a continuation of the previous day’s Battle of Mansfield\, fought nearby\, which ended around sunset due to darkness. The night time provided a brief interlude in hostilities. On April 9\, Taylor launched an ambitious assault against the newly reinforced Federals at Pleasant Hill and had the upper hand before General Thomas J. Churchill’s Arkansas division was flanked on its right and repulsed. After the battle\, the Federals remained demoralized and unconfident in their commander; they retreated to Grand Ecore\, and from there to Alexandria. This was the largest battle fought west of the Mississippi River. \nOfficially\, the battle was a Union victory; as the Confederates were successfully driven from the field. However\, because Banks and his army had retreated so soon afterwards\, many argued over who had really won. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment in Pllican\, Louisiana. \nTags: Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment\, Battle of Pleasant Hill Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events
