DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \n                                    \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                    \nJoin us at the 49th Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous on June 1-2\, 2019 at Fort De Chartres in Prairie du Rocher\, Illinois. The first weekend in June\, Fort de Chartres State Historic Site hosts the largest rendezvous in Illinois or the Midwest with over a thousand participants\, hundreds of encampments\, and thousands of visitors joining in on the festivities. Based on the traditional French fur trapper’s rendezvous where trappers and traders would meet at a predetermined location to trade furs for necessities\, these rendezvous were the highlight of the fur trapper’s year and now the Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous is the highlight of Fort de Chartres’s extensive calendar of historical events and activities. \n\nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\nThe Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous offers participants and visitors alike a glimpse into the period from 1740-1840\, a part of Illinois’ past when it was governed not only by France but by Great Britain and the United States as well. Costumed reenactors portray a variety of personas including colonial military units\, mountain men\, Native Americans\, settlers\, merchants\, and more. Historical demonstrations are located at various locations on the grounds and there are periodic demonstrations that include period music\, military drills\, and musket and cannon competitions. \n@ Fort de Chartres State Historic Site\, at 1350 IL Route 155\, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The event is open and free to general public with special event parking for this event just $5 a car. Donations welcomed. The boom of cannons\, the smell of campfires and a parade of colorful uniforms will transport visitors back to the 1700s. The Rendezvous features 18th century military units\, traditional craft demonstrations\, period music and dancing\, black powder shooting events and cannon firings – all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk\, buy hand-made crafts\, learn about French kitchen gardens\, and watch swordsmen duel\, taste delicious food and much more. \nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n[/fusion_gallery]\n \nAs Fort de Chartres is an Illinois Historic Preservation Agency site\, there is a wide variety of interpretive activities that can be found throughout the grounds. These activities run continuously throughout both days. In the Native Crafts area\, visitors can learn first hand the arts of bow and arrow making\, hide tanning\, basket weaving\, the use of native foods and herbs\, pottery\, the construction of wigwams\, and the history of how and why the fur trade became such an important frontier industry. There are also archery demonstrations and competitions. \nThe Colonial Area features demonstrations that include spinning\, dyeing\, the use of looms\, woodworking\, weaving\, quilting\, rope making\, coopering\, and blacksmiths. Located in the Fort buildings themselves are a French Patron (River Boatman\,) a French Marines quarters\, a Jesuit missionary in the Fort’s Chapel\, and the Piethman Museum. A French Colonial garden\, oxen\, and baked goods for sale from a working stone oven can be found near the demonstration areas. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country. Visitors can gain a lot of insight into the life styles of the fur trapping era by exploring the Primitive Camp. The reenactors are a friendly bunch and are happy to talk about the specifics of their camp and the personas they portray. It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Throughout the next three months professional soldiers and militiamen alike persevered through cold winter weather and mud that would at times be knee-deep. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. The Margaretta Days Festival and Crafts Fair celebrates the American Revolution Downeast\, specifically the Battle of the Margaretta\, the first Naval Battle of the American Revolution\, the beginning of the US Merchant Marines\, and the Battle of the Rim. This annual festival in Machias\, Maine was named one of Yankee Magazine’s 2010 Top 20 Events which encourages everyone to enjoy travelling back in time to life in 1775. It’s a lot of fun with a bit of history thrown in. History comes alive with an encampment of soldier re-enactors and period demonstrations. \n\nCentury Market Fair at Locust Grove\nReenactors of all levels are welcome to participate in sharing the history of the first Naval battle of the American Revolutionary War in 1775 when the local men seized the HMS Margaretta.\nMilitary\, militia and civilian reenactors\, all authentically dressed for the period\, include farmers\, trappers\, hunters\, sailors\, traders\, lumbermen\, soldiers\, minister\, and four of Maine’s Indian tribes. \nAt the Margaretta Days Festival and Crafts Fair you might watch a skirmish between the redcoats and patriots. You might visit the trappers\, timber framers\, blacksmith\, woodworkers\, weavers\, spinner. You could experience what it’s like to throw a tomahawk or toss an antler. Then watch the children’s activities: cornhusk dollmaking\, hoop-rolling\, and more. Be sure to taste the period food: moose or venison stew\, meat pies\, beans\, cornbread\, and fruit pies to name a few. Enjoy live period music; listen to the stories of our heroes: Jeremiah O’Brien\, Hannah Weston\, Rev. Lyons\, Passamaquoddy Chief Jean Baptiste Neptune. It will be a day the whole family will enjoy and remember for years to come. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission\nThe second Saturday of every June the Margaretta Days Festival and Crafts Fair begins with a breakfast at our local American Legion\, followed by the 10:00 parade to the festival. The day concludes with a bean supper at the Masonic Hall. History\, food\, games\, shopping! Handicapped accessible\, fun for the whole family and admission to the Festival is free! \nAmerican Legion Post 9 Hosts Margaretta Days Breakfast\nAs in all prior years\, the Ephraim Johnson American Legion Post 9 is hosting a Margaretta Days breakfast\, kicking off the historic occasion in the county seat. Post 9\, one of the town’s largest and most loyal community contributors\, donates thousands every year to the Machias area\, including its food pantries\, scholarships and donations to needy children and families. The breakfast at the post will run from 7-9 a.m. on Saturday\, featuring blueberry pancakes\, bacon\, eggs\, sausage and muffins. Drop by and get Margaretta Days Festival and Crafts Fair off to a great start! \n \nSaturday Parade\nAfter the pancake breakfast\, a parade of pomp and circumstance begins as people gather and proceed to a hill in the distance. Walking together are the sons and daughters of the American Revolution\, and in these roles represent those that fought and died for a young country. Native American tribal leaders\, state and local dignitaries\, costumed reenactors of patriots\, citizens and children aboard replicas of ships join the ranks. It is a procession accompanied by flags\, musket shot\, drums and fife that fill the air with patriotism as it moves up College Hill toward the reenactor encampments\, games\, activities\, and crafters on the Green Commons at the University of Maine Machias Campus \nShowing Your Goods at the Crafts Fair \nAll booths are on a first come\, first served basis and are 12’ by 12.’ You provide your own tent\, tables\, chairs\, etc. There is no electricity or water available. Over 14\,000 men and women mustered into service for the Union Army at this site in which 1\,480 did not return to Michigan buried in the battle field cemeteries in the South. Historic Fort Wayne is one of a handful of star forts left in the US. Daily hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with the Raids reenactments at 2:00 pm daily. The Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment is sponsored by the Friends of Fort Harrod and is the Park’s signature event each year and promises to be bigger and better than ever before! \n\nOld Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid\nMany reenactors and volunteers work hard to re-create the actual look and feel of a real Shawnee attack upon Fort Harrod which might have occurred in March 1777. It began a year long seige on the Fort during which many settlers would die violent deaths. The Shawnee killed or stole all of the settlers livestock and burn their crops. The year of 1777 became known as the “Year of Despair” and one can only imagine the terror and hardships the settlers in the Fort had to endure. But\, the Fort held\, attack after attack. Had it not\, there would have been no Harrods Town\, no Harrodsburg and no State of Kentucky. \nFort Harrod was never overrun. At one point they nearly ran out of gun powder which gave rise to the famous “Powder Run” by George Rogers Clark\, James Harrod and others to obtain the much needed powder. They were successful and the Fort was saved! \nIn addition to the Raids reenactment\, the Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment living history\, colonial music\, cannon fire and Native attacks on the fort. Colonial entertainers will perform all weekend. After the portrayal of this historic battle and what could have been here at Harrod’s Fort the public will be invited to the Native village to watch the adoption ceremonies for the women and children as they could have been carried out if Harrod had fallen. DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle of Monmouth Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \n                                    \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                    \nRelive history at the Annual Battle of Monmouth Reenactment on June 22-23\, 2019 at Monmouth Battlefield State Park (the original Battlefield Site) in Manalapan\, New Jersey. Each year the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield co-sponsors\, with the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry\, sponsor the annual reenactment of the battle in commemoration of the anniversary of the battle fought on June 28\, 1778. Hundreds of troops encamp at the park and recreate scenarios of the battle over the weekend. There are also numerous presentations and lectures\, tours of the camps\, and sutler area open to the public. The Friends of Monmouth Battlefield will be requesting an $10 per vehicle donation to defray the costs of the weekend. A food vendor will be on site and handicapped parking is available. \n\nBattle of Monmouth Reenactment\nBring your family to the Battlefield Saturday or Sunday\, and travel back in time to the 1770s. Two armies will be preparing to do battle. Continental Army soldiers retrained at Valley Forge are itching to show off their new skills\, while a British-German-Loyalist Army hopes to crush the rebels and restore good government. Come early for a full day of living history. The army encampments will welcome visitors beginning at 9 A.M. Watch soldiers clean their muskets while their women prepare what may be their men’s last meal. Some officers may be drilling their men while others plan for the battle and yet others play cards. If someone is accused of cheating\, there may be a duel.
