The Fair at New Boston is on the former site of two Shawnee villages\, Peckuwe and Kispoko. Handicrafts\, games\, and demonstrations of Shawnee\, Mingo\, Miami\, Wyandotte\, and other tribes are featured. All day\, you can learn how food was prepared in camp at live cooking demonstrations. This is also one of the shadiest places to come on a hot\, sunny afternoon. \nMusic\nMusic was enjoyed in 1797 in many different forms\, as it is now. Relax in a historic tavern while listening to music of the era. Musicians playing violins\, mandolins\, guitars\, and even bagpipes move from tavern to tavern and rove throughout the area. The coffeehouse is a center of entertainment and a place where you can enjoy a game of checkers or chess. \nBattle Reenactment and Cannon\nThrill to the boom of the full-sized Revolutionary War cannon. The Mad River Light Artillery Revolutionary War reenactor group sets up their bronze British Light six-pounder at the top of the hill near the flagpole and militia encampment. This group will demonstrate cannon firing many times throughout each day. \nEach afternoon\, the Fair at New Boston features the excitement of a battle reenactment. Our reenactment features militia on foot and on horse\, cannons\, Shawnee warriors\, and British Crown troops. After the battle\, visit the militia camps on the hill between Hertzler House and the George Rogers Clark Memorial. The First Mad River Light Artillery near the flag pole will be available to answer questions. \nGrand Camera Obscura\nNear the entrance to the Fair at New Boston\, an oddly shaped tent will most likely be first to catch your attention. It’s the Grand Camera Obscura. Fair attendees can be among a relatively fortunate few who can enjoy this historical scientific attraction\, which is just like the one seen in Paris more than 200 years ago. Step into the round tent and be prepared to be amazed. \n\nPremier Living History Event\nThere is time after the battle to finish shopping\, get something to eat\, and catch another of the entertainers. You will also want to see the closing ceremonies at the end of the day. \nAll of this is why the Fair at New Boston is recognized as a premiere living history event. All the music\, entertainment\, clothing\, methods of cooking\, foods served\, merchandise booths\, and equipment used by the artisans are juried (or judged) to ensure authenticity to the period. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. John Brown\, no stranger to dangerous missions\, helped engineer the first capture of Ticonderoga in 1775. With the stakes all the higher\, he would test his luck again. As General Gates prepared to stop the British advance on Albany\, he ordered General Lincoln to divide\, divert\, and harass General Burgoyne’s supply lines back to Canada. Colonel Brown chose his men carefully\, allowed first pick of the ragtag patriot force assembled by General Lincoln at Pawlet\, Vermont. Massachusetts and Vermont militia men would get their chance to strike a major blow against General Burgoyne’s attack to divide the colonies. Steadying them would be regulars from Colonel Warner’s regiment of Vermonters. Out front\, Vermont rangers were to lead the way. Leading the rangers was\, Captain Benjamin Whitcomb\, a ranger so skilled in his craft he was a wanted man to the British Army. \nRushing down into the LeChute river valley from Lake George landing\, Brown’s men captured 330 British prisoners and set 118 American POWs free. Dawn at Fort Ticonderoga would see British Cannons atop Mount Defiance\, which forced the American’s to flee that summer\, turned on the British garrison itself. British soldiers awoke to the sight of a Brunswick soldier cut in half by a British cannon ball fired by Brown’s men from the summit of that hill. Rearmed with captured British weapons\, American POWs got a chance to settle their score shoulder to shoulder with Brown’s militia\, regulars\, and rangers. The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster opens at 10:00 am with a Colonial encampment\, militia and crafts demonstrations\, and contradancing. We expect dozens of colonial and craft vendors and 25 fife and drum corps. \n\nSudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster\nParticipation in the fife and drum muster is sought after by companies throughout the northeast. These groups include the host Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie\, local groups including the Middlesex County Volunteers\, William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps\, Middlesex 4-H Fife and Drum Corps\, Lincoln Minutemen\, Stow Minutemen and Regimental Music of Saintonge and other groups. \nThe grand parade of fifes and drums will begin at noon and will be followed directly by a performance by each of the corps attending. The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster is a celebration rather than a competition. The corps appear by invitation\, and attend to share their music and friendship with other Fife & Drum Corps. \nIn the days preceding the Revolutionary War\, militia would usually muster to drill twice each year\, once in the spring and the other in the fall. Following their drill\, the militia would be joined by their families and celebrate with good food and drink\, music and games. \nAdmission & Hours\nAdmission: $2 (donation) for adults in contemporary dress\nHours: 11:30 pm – 5:00 pm \nA Day at The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster\nThe Sudbury Companies of Militia & Minute and the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie host this full day of Revolutionary War era living history. The militia will execute its manual of arms. Then contra dancers will entertain the morning crowd in the main muster field. Soon after that\, the Sudbury militia will call for an assembly\, the town crier announce that the town of Sudbury had formed a local militia and then introduce the newly elected officers of the Sudbury Companies. Shortly after the colonel begins drilling his militia\, British Regulars will arrive to arrest the newly installed colonel. The militia watch as their colonel is put in stocks and later taken away. They then pursue the Redcoats and exchange musket fire along the service road. When the musket fire ends\, the Redcoats surrender. \n \nDay at The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster\nFifes and drums will then be heard in the distance as they assemble for their parade from the Grist Mill to the muster field. After the parade\, each fife and drum company returns to play a stand piece. Throughout the day\, militia and regiments can be seen and visited in their encampments. The attack on the Kentucky settlement of Boonesborough was led by Chief Blackfish\, a Shawnee leader allied to the British. Months before the battle\, Blackfish had captured and adopted Daniel Boone\, the founder of Boonesborough. Boone escaped the Shawnees in time to lead the defense of the settlement. Blackfish’s siege was unsuccessful and was lifted after ten days. Boone was then court-martialed by fellow officers who suspected him of having British sympathies. Boone was acquitted\, but he soon moved away from Boonesborough. \nAbout Fort Boonesborough\nRichard Henderson\, founder of the Transylvania Company in 1775\, chose Daniel Boone to head a party of 31 axe men to clear a path through the Cumberland Gap that would run from Long Island of the Holston River\, Tennessee\, to Otter Creek of the Kentucky River. Blazing the trail presented extraordinary difficulties – the route through the wilderness was a hunter’s trace that was too narrow for a wagon.
