SUMMARY:Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nExperience the excitement of the Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment on December 7-8\, 2019 at Battlefield Park South in Chesapeake\, Virginia. This two-day event is held at the Great Bridge Bridge\, which is the original site of the Battle of Great Bridge that took place on December 9\, 1775. Step back in time with us. The location is by the Intracoastal Canal in the shadow of the Great Bridge Bridge. \n\nBattle of Great Bridge Reenactment\nStep back in time with us. The Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment features re-enactments of two pivotal Revolutionary War battles: the Battle at Kemps Landing and the Battle of Great Bridge. The event also features Revolutionary War encampments\, demonstrations\, character portrayals\, camp life\, historical displays and lectures\, skilled artisans demonstrating early American trades\, and children’s crafts and activities. \nSince that first reenactment\, the battle of Great Bridge evolved into a two-day annual event sponsored by the Chesapeake Department of Parks\, Recreation and Tourism. Initially it was held at Chesapeake City Park in Greenbrier. Eventually\, it was moved to Great Bridge Battlefield Park South on Battlefield Boulevard\, the original site of the historic battle. \nBattle of Great Bridge Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nReenactors and historical interpreters who have regularly participated in the battle event have created an increased local interest in the battle that has generated enthusiasm for the creation of the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways history museum that is scheduled to open its doors by December 2018. \nWhat was once considered a mere footnote skirmish in the annals of America’s War for Independence is now regarded as a pivotal battle during the early days of the conflict. It’s known as “the Southern Bunker Hill” but this time on Dec. 9\, 1775\, at a berm known as Great Bridge\, just a musket ball shot from next weekend’s event\, the Patriots defeated an army of professional British soldiers and Tory militia. It opened southern supply routes and allowed the important Norfolk harbor to fall in Continental hands. \n \nFREE to the Public\nHours:: Saturday & Sunday 10 am to 4 pm \nConcessions: available for sale on both days. \nFor More Information:\nAngela J. Thompson\, AJThompson@cityofchesapeake.net; Call 757-382-6411 \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment in December at Battlefield Park South in Chesapeake\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment\, Great Bridge Battlefield Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment\, Virginia Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

It also stood witness to Washington’s crucial victory at the Battle of Trenton. At the beginning of the 20th century\, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized The Old Barracks Association and spearheaded a campaign to purchase the building. The building has been a museum for over a century\, and has frequently been used as a symbol for the state of New Jersey. The Old Barracks Museum welcomes visitors from across the state as well as around the world. \nABOUT HM 17TH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY: \nThe recreated HM 17th Regiment of Infantry was established in 2002 with the mission to provide for its members and the public the experiences of the common British soldier throughout the American Revolution\, specifically at historic sites from the Hudson River Valley to Virginia. The group works as a collective to research\, recreate historically accurate uniforms and equipment\, and provide living history displays to vividly teach and engage the public with history. The recreated 17th strives for meaningful\, research-based public interpretation of the perspectives of the British soldier\, and engage with broader questions of what it meant to be “British” and “American” nearly 250 years ago. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next British Occupation Day on the first Saturday in December at the Old Barracks in Trenton\, New Jersey. \nTags: British Occupation Day\, British Occupation of the Old Barracks\, Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events

We suggest visitors arrive before 1:00 P.M. on Christmas Day to ensure a good place along the viewing line. \nOrigins of the Crossing Event\nWhile the annual crossing has been popular for decades\, it had difficulty in its early origins. The first few attempts at a commemoration Crossing in 1838 and then again in 1876 lead to rowdiness among the reenactors and the event was not repeated again for nearly 100 years. In 1947\, a fraternity promoted a non-hazing initiation by reenacting the famous trip across the Delaware\, sparking new interest in holding an annual Crossing. When National Geographic Magazine featured a story about the Crossing in 1952 complete with photos\, the modern tradition was born. \nAbout Washington Crossing Historic Park (Pennsylvania side)\nWashington Crossing Historic Park is located at the intersection of Routes 532 and 32 (River Road) in Washington Crossing\, Pennsylvania.
