The Battle was the first planned attack by the American army during the Revolutionary War and aimed at liberating Philadelphia from British control. Eleven of Historic Germantown’s sites were involved in the October 4\, 1777 Battle\, with Cliveden as the main stage. The tradition of remembering the Battle of Germantown through reenactment dates to the 150th anniversary in 1927\, where people dressed in their ancestors’ clothing to show their connections to the historic event. Today\, the Revolutionary Germantown Festival and Germantown Battle Reenactments that it includes\, tells the diverse stories of everyone involved\, from General George Washington\, to Ned Hector\, an African American Patriot teamster\, and even the pacifist Quakers who got caught in the cross-fire. \nHistory of the Battle of Germantown\nOne day in history\, General George Washington’s daring campaign to liberate the occupied capital city\, Philadelphia\, came to an abrupt end on the Germantown Road on October 4\, 1777. Washington planned a pre-dawn attack on Germantown\, where thousands of British soldiers were camped in the fields\, living off the crops and livestock of the local residents. Homes were commandeered as headquarters for the British officers\, including General William Howe at Stenton. Although the TRT supports and coordinates its activities with the South Platte Valley Historical Society\, the organization has its own officers\, funding and newsletter\, the “Dispatch”. \nColonial Period Reenactors\nColorado Society – Sons of the American Revolution (COSSAR) members participate with members of the 2nd Connecticut Militia\, the Northern Colorado Fife and Drum Corps\, and the Vision Heirs (providing elements of both the American Continental Army and the British 64th Regiment of Foot) at these annual events\, like the Colorado Colonial Encampment. Demonstrations of Colonial and Revolutionary War period daily life are presented to the public as living history and battles such as Bunker Hill and Cowpens are re-enacted. \nColonial Frontier Skills Competition: A Timed Event\nThis competition showcases the skills used by the early colonists and Native Americans when on the frontier or in wilderness settings. These skills included\, but werenft limited to: marksmanship\, fire building\, shelters\, etc. Men and women are both encouraged to participate. Having the appropriate gear was also important. As reenactors who portray the colonial period\, it is important that we too have an understanding and working knowledge of these skills\, which gives us a greater understanding and appreciation for their lives and sacrifices. The attack on the Kentucky settlement of Boonesborough was led by Chief Blackfish\, a Shawnee leader allied to the British. Months before the battle\, Blackfish had captured and adopted Daniel Boone\, the founder of Boonesborough. Boone escaped the Shawnees in time to lead the defense of the settlement. Blackfish’s siege was unsuccessful and was lifted after ten days. Boone was then court-martialed by fellow officers who suspected him of having British sympathies. Boone was acquitted\, but he soon moved away from Boonesborough. \nAbout Fort Boonesborough\nRichard Henderson\, founder of the Transylvania Company in 1775\, chose Daniel Boone to head a party of 31 axe men to clear a path through the Cumberland Gap that would run from Long Island of the Holston River\, Tennessee\, to Otter Creek of the Kentucky River. Blazing the trail presented extraordinary difficulties – the route through the wilderness was a hunter’s trace that was too narrow for a wagon. Shortly after the colonel begins drilling his militia\, British Regulars will arrive to arrest the newly installed colonel. The militia watch as their colonel is put in stocks and later taken away. They then pursue the Redcoats and exchange musket fire along the service road. John Brown\, no stranger to dangerous missions\, helped engineer the first capture of Ticonderoga in 1775. With the stakes all the higher\, he would test his luck again. As General Gates prepared to stop the British advance on Albany\, he ordered General Lincoln to divide\, divert\, and harass General Burgoyne’s supply lines back to Canada. Colonel Brown chose his men carefully\, allowed first pick of the ragtag patriot force assembled by General Lincoln at Pawlet\, Vermont. Massachusetts and Vermont militia men would get their chance to strike a major blow against General Burgoyne’s attack to divide the colonies. Steadying them would be regulars from Colonel Warner’s regiment of Vermonters. Out front\, Vermont rangers were to lead the way. Leading the rangers was\, Captain Benjamin Whitcomb\, a ranger so skilled in his craft he was a wanted man to the British Army. \nRushing down into the LeChute river valley from Lake George landing\, Brown’s men captured 330 British prisoners and set 118 American POWs free. Dawn at Fort Ticonderoga would see British Cannons atop Mount Defiance\, which forced the American’s to flee that summer\, turned on the British garrison itself. British soldiers awoke to the sight of a Brunswick soldier cut in half by a British cannon ball fired by Brown’s men from the summit of that hill. Rearmed with captured British weapons\, American POWs got a chance to settle their score shoulder to shoulder with Brown’s militia\, regulars\, and rangers. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. This is also one of the shadiest places to come on a hot\, sunny afternoon. \nMusic\nMusic was enjoyed in 1797 in many different forms\, as it is now. Relax in a historic tavern while listening to music of the era. Musicians playing violins\, mandolins\, guitars\, and even bagpipes move from tavern to tavern and rove throughout the area. The coffeehouse is a center of entertainment and a place where you can enjoy a game of checkers or chess. \nBattle Reenactment and Cannon\nThrill to the boom of the full-sized Revolutionary War cannon. The Mad River Light Artillery Revolutionary War reenactor group sets up their bronze British Light six-pounder at the top of the hill near the flagpole and militia encampment. This group will demonstrate cannon firing many times throughout each day. \nEach afternoon\, the Fair at New Boston features the excitement of a battle reenactment. Our reenactment features militia on foot and on horse\, cannons\, Shawnee warriors\, and British Crown troops. After the battle\, visit the militia camps on the hill between Hertzler House and the George Rogers Clark Memorial. The First Mad River Light Artillery near the flag pole will be available to answer questions. \nGrand Camera Obscura\nNear the entrance to the Fair at New Boston\, an oddly shaped tent will most likely be first to catch your attention. It’s the Grand Camera Obscura. Fair attendees can be among a relatively fortunate few who can enjoy this historical scientific attraction\, which is just like the one seen in Paris more than 200 years ago. Step into the round tent and be prepared to be amazed. \n\nPremier Living History Event\nThere is time after the battle to finish shopping\, get something to eat\, and catch another of the entertainers. You will also want to see the closing ceremonies at the end of the day. \nAll of this is why the Fair at New Boston is recognized as a premiere living history event. It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Throughout the next three months professional soldiers and militiamen alike persevered through cold winter weather and mud that would at times be knee-deep. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. During the early morning hours of July 7\, 1777\, British General John Burgoyne’s army met the resistance and bravery of Americans for the first time in the Battle of Hubbardton. A massive British invasion from Canada chased the Continental Army from Mount Independence south to Hubbardton. \nThe British strategy was to continue to New York and divide New England from the rest of the colonies. On a grassy hill\, the New Englanders made their stand. While the British held the field and technically won the battle\, their losses were so heavy that they gave up chasing the Americans to tend to their casualties. The Battle of Hubbardton marked the beginning of the end for Burgoyne and his great plan. On August 16 he suffered a stunning blow at the Battle of Bennington. General Horatio Gates\, their newly-appointed commander\, quickly sprung into action reorganizing\, resupplying\, and restoring the discipline of America’s northern defense. Gates put soldiers from New England\, New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania to work building earthworks all around the old Fort of Ticonderoga and constructing a navy to defend Lake Champlain. \n1776 was a year of rebuilding the Northern Army as part of building a new nation. While the Continental Congress discussed the finer points of declaring independence in Philadelphia\, the shattered remnants of the Continental Army which had come so close to capturing Quebec trickled back down to Fort Ticonderoga. Frost bitten\, starving\, and decimated by smallpox these soldiers began building up bulwarks and America’s first navy to defend their new nation. A new Continental Army emerged reinforced by soldiers from Pennsylvania\, Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, New Jersey\, New Hampshire and New York\, to guard Fort Ticonderoga. \nWhile the declaration itself was signed July 4th\, news of the document and the patriotic sentiment it carried would not reach the Northern Army at Fort Ticonderoga until July 28th. It began a year long seige on the Fort during which many settlers would die violent deaths. The Shawnee killed or stole all of the settlers livestock and burn their crops. The year of 1777 became known as the “Year of Despair” and one can only imagine the terror and hardships the settlers in the Fort had to endure. But\, the Fort held\, attack after attack. Had it not\, there would have been no Harrods Town\, no Harrodsburg and no State of Kentucky. \nFort Harrod was never overrun. At one point they nearly ran out of gun powder which gave rise to the famous “Powder Run” by George Rogers Clark\, James Harrod and others to obtain the much needed powder. They were successful and the Fort was saved! \nIn addition to the Raids reenactment\, the Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment living history\, colonial music\, cannon fire and Native attacks on the fort. Colonial entertainers will perform all weekend. After the portrayal of this historic battle and what could have been here at Harrod’s Fort the public will be invited to the Native village to watch the adoption ceremonies for the women and children as they could have been carried out if Harrod had fallen. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. These activities run continuously throughout both days. In the Native Crafts area\, visitors can learn first hand the arts of bow and arrow making\, hide tanning\, basket weaving\, the use of native foods and herbs\, pottery\, the construction of wigwams\, and the history of how and why the fur trade became such an important frontier industry. There are also archery demonstrations and competitions. \nThe Colonial Area features demonstrations that include spinning\, dyeing\, the use of looms\, woodworking\, weaving\, quilting\, rope making\, coopering\, and blacksmiths. Located in the Fort buildings themselves are a French Patron (River Boatman\,) a French Marines quarters\, a Jesuit missionary in the Fort’s Chapel\, and the Piethman Museum. A French Colonial garden\, oxen\, and baked goods for sale from a working stone oven can be found near the demonstration areas. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country.
