The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Community hosts the Traditional Mdewakanton Wacipi (Flandreau Pow Wow) every July on third weekend (Friday – Sunday). The Flandreau Pow Wow begins with the Grand Entry of all the dancers entering the arena\, led by the flag bearers. \n\nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi)\nA Pow Wow (Wacipi in Dakota language) was originally a spring event to celebrate the seasonal renewal of life. People would congregate to sing\, dance\, renew old friendships and form new ones. Pow wows had religious significance as an opportunity for families to hold naming and honoring ceremonies. The term pow wow is traced by some to the Algonquin language and is thought to have been used by non-Indians to mean\, in general a council or meeting. \nToday\, pow wows are still very much a part of the lives of many Native Americans around the country. While some pow wows begin as early as March\, the pow wow season runs from June until September. Pow wows are held every weekend\, often at several locations during peak periods. Many families pack up and “go on the circuit\,” camping out and enjoying the traditional celebration activities of singing\, dancing and seeing old friends not seen since the previous season. Whether you are “on the circuit\,” or just visiting to see what the excitement is all about\, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Flandreau Pow Wow. \nPow Wow Details\nFree Admission / Session Pay Out\n1st 20 Drums Guaranteed Drum Split\nMeals – Provided Friday and Saturday \nGrand Entry: \nFriday: 7:00 pm\nSaturday: 1:00 pm & 7:00 pm\nSunday: 1:00 pm \nRegistration Opens: Friday 3:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am\nFlag Raising: Friday 9:00 am; Saturday 9:00 am; Sunday 9:00 am \nFlandreau Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff\nEyapaha: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nHost Drum: To Be Announced\nColor Guard: To be announced\nMeals – provided Saturday and Sunday\nPrincess Contest: To Be Announced \nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi) Location:\nFlandreau Wacipi Grounds\nNorth of Flandreau off Highway 13\nFlandreau\, SD \nHost Hotel: Royal River Casino\, 877-912-LUCK; ask for Powwow Rate. \nFor more information: \nEmail: flandreauwacipi@fsst.org\nPhone: Mike Wakeman Phone: 605-530-0236\nVendor Information: Mike Wakeman 605-530-0236 \nThe Flandreau Powwow is a family friendly event. The event starts Friday night and goes through Monday. The traditional Southern Ute Bear Dance\, once held in March\, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth each Memorial Day Weekend. The Annual Ute Bear Dance is a social dance everyone enjoys. Origin of the Bear Dance can be traced back to the fifteenth century when the Spanish first came upon the Ute’s in the spring time. When the first thunder in the spring was heard\, it was time for the Bear Dance. \n\nSouthern Ute Bear Dance\nTwo Separate Events\nDon’t confuse this traditional four day Southern Ute Bear Dance at the Bear Dance Grounds with two day Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds that happens at the same time about three miles away. The traditional Bear Dance is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Many dancers and visitors will go back and forth between these two events\, depending on the schedule. \nThe Bear Dance opens at 10 a.m.\, with blessing of the corral at 10:30 and a kickoff lunch at noon. Bear dancing on Saturday and Sunday starts at 10 a.m. and continues through the evening. On Monday the dancing starts at 10a.m. and ends at sunset. The Bear Dance feast is Monday noon just south of the Bear Dance corral. \nPlease Observe these Rules \n\nNo short dresses or baggy pants while dancing\nPhotography\, video and audio recording is prohibited except by members of the Ute Tribes.\nThe Pine River is restricted\n\nFor Bear Dance information call 970-563-0100 x 2301. \nAbout the Bear Dance\nThe Bear Dance originally was held around the middle of March\, usually after the first thunder in the spring was heard and when the Bear came out of hibernation. All the various Ute bands would come together and prepare for the dances\, which were held throughout Ute territories. For the Southern Utes\, the hosting date has been changed to the Memorial Day weekend to cater to the youth who would be out of school for the summer. \n \nThe Bear Dance is the oldest and most historic of the Southern Ute dances. Legend has it that two brothers were hunting when one of them noticed a bear doing a dance while scratching a tree. The bear taught the hunter the dance\, along with songs\, to take back to his people. The songs showed respect to the bear spirit\, and respect to the bear spirit makes one strong. \nThe Bear Dance is still celebrated today with a dance corral\, drums and singing\, festive costumes and good food. The women wear colorful broom skirts and shawls\, many of which are homemade especially for the dance. It’s women’s choice\, so the women ask the men to dance by flicking their shawls toward the men they wish to dance with. It’s a no risk proposition\, since it’s against the rules for a man in the dance corral to refuse an invitation. \nAnother tradition is to wear plumes during the dance. The plumes represent troubles or hardships endured over the last year. The plumes are left at the entrance of the dance corral when the dance ends to signify leaving old troubles behind and starting life anew. \nThe last day of Bear Dance features a feast for all in attendance. Traditionally\, a stew is prepared with meat and vegetables mixed in a large\, round pot atop an open fire. \nThis information about the Southern Ute Bear Dance is from articles on the Bear Dance\, by the Southern Ute Drum. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Southern Ute Bear Dance celebration on Memorial Day Weekend at the Bear Dance Grounds in Ignacio\, Colorado. \nTags: Southern Ute Bear Dance\, Colorado Powwow\, Colorado Pow Wow \nView other Colorado Pow Wows

The Veterans Powwow was renamed that year to honor the Tribal Elder and Army veteran\, Marcellus Norwest\, who walked on on May 22. \nMarcellus had led the effort to start both the Veterans Powwow\, held in recent years at Uyxat Powwow Grounds\, and the Veterans Memorial that sits on the Tribal campus of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “We’re thankful for what he stood for and for the time and effort he put into making this powwow what it is today\,” said Tribal Council Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy in her invocation. “Marce set the example of how to treat our veterans\,” said Tribal Council Vice Chair Reyn Leno. \nThe Grand Ronde Contest Powwow is a family friendly event. We thank you for respecting Grand Ronde’s Tribal community and our culture by not displaying gang affiliation or by bringing drugs\, alcohol or weapons to this event. No pets are permitted around the powwow arena. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Powwow at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds in Willamina\, Oregon. \nTags: Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Powwow\, Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Pow Wow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows
