It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Throughout the next three months professional soldiers and militiamen alike persevered through cold winter weather and mud that would at times be knee-deep. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. The first weekend in June\, Fort de Chartres State Historic Site hosts the largest rendezvous in Illinois or the Midwest with over a thousand participants\, hundreds of encampments\, and thousands of visitors joining in on the festivities. Based on the traditional French fur trapper’s rendezvous where trappers and traders would meet at a predetermined location to trade furs for necessities\, these rendezvous were the highlight of the fur trapper’s year and now the Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous is the highlight of Fort de Chartres’s extensive calendar of historical events and activities. \n\nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\nThe Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous offers participants and visitors alike a glimpse into the period from 1740-1840\, a part of Illinois’ past when it was governed not only by France but by Great Britain and the United States as well. Costumed reenactors portray a variety of personas including colonial military units\, mountain men\, Native Americans\, settlers\, merchants\, and more. Historical demonstrations are located at various locations on the grounds and there are periodic demonstrations that include period music\, military drills\, and musket and cannon competitions. \n@ Fort de Chartres State Historic Site\, at 1350 IL Route 155\, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The event is open and free to general public with special event parking for this event just $5 a car. Donations welcomed. The boom of cannons\, the smell of campfires and a parade of colorful uniforms will transport visitors back to the 1700s. The Rendezvous features 18th century military units\, traditional craft demonstrations\, period music and dancing\, black powder shooting events and cannon firings – all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk\, buy hand-made crafts\, learn about French kitchen gardens\, and watch swordsmen duel\, taste delicious food and much more. \nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n[/fusion_gallery]\n \nAs Fort de Chartres is an Illinois Historic Preservation Agency site\, there is a wide variety of interpretive activities that can be found throughout the grounds. These activities run continuously throughout both days. In the Native Crafts area\, visitors can learn first hand the arts of bow and arrow making\, hide tanning\, basket weaving\, the use of native foods and herbs\, pottery\, the construction of wigwams\, and the history of how and why the fur trade became such an important frontier industry. There are also archery demonstrations and competitions. \nThe Colonial Area features demonstrations that include spinning\, dyeing\, the use of looms\, woodworking\, weaving\, quilting\, rope making\, coopering\, and blacksmiths. Located in the Fort buildings themselves are a French Patron (River Boatman\,) a French Marines quarters\, a Jesuit missionary in the Fort’s Chapel\, and the Piethman Museum. A French Colonial garden\, oxen\, and baked goods for sale from a working stone oven can be found near the demonstration areas. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country. Visitors can gain a lot of insight into the life styles of the fur trapping era by exploring the Primitive Camp. The reenactors are a friendly bunch and are happy to talk about the specifics of their camp and the personas they portray. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. Meet colorful characters from the French and Indian War\, the North American Fur Trade era to the California Gold Rush\, 1700-1850. The Manzanita High Mountain Rendezvous is fun for the whole family! See history come alive with demonstrations of primitive skills\, blacksmithing\, candle making\, gunsmiths\, woodworking\, flint and steel fire making\, tipis and period tents\, archery\, tomahawk and knife throwing\, target shooting trade goods and clothing. \n\nManzanita High Mountain Rendezvous\nDay Visitors: we are open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday (first weekend). All clothing\, camping gear and equipment used by participants must be appropriate to the time period from 1730 to 1790. Vendors must also meet these standards\, both in their clothing and equipment\, and in the wares offered for sale. First-time vendors are vetted in advance by the Friends of Fort Frederick Trade Committee before they are allowed to participate. \nThe 18th-century timeframe is in keeping with the event’s venue. The centerpiece of Fort Frederick State Park is a massive stone fortification that was built in 1756\, after the defeat of General Braddock exposed the western colonial frontier to attacks by the French and their native allies. \nDuring the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair\, a contingent of reenactors portraying French and Indian War-era Maryland provincial troops man the fort\, live in the barracks and provide interpretive events for visitors. These men portray members of Alexander Beall’s and Joshua Beall’s companies of Maryland forces. During the Market Fair\, the troops have a schedule of exhibitions that they perform. You can watch marching demonstrations\, flag-raising ceremonies or demonstrations of 18th-century military music. \nCivilian reenactors and living historians of every type that you could have found in 18th-century society can be found at the Fort Frederick Market Fair. Most of the campers portray typical frontier types\, dressing and equipping themselves as hunters or scouts. There is also a large contingent that prefers to portray the higher strata of colonial society\, so that\, among the rough-and-tumble long hunters you’ll find powdered-wig aristocrats and evening-gowned ladies. There are also quite a few reenactors who portray Native Americans of the period. \nRogers’ Rangers at the Market Fair\nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair also serves as one of the largest gatherings of Rogers’ Rangers reenactors. Roger’s Rangers started as an independent company of light troops. Their job was to serve as scouts and skirmishers that operated well forward of conventional troops\, harassing the French and securing intelligence. They performed their work so well that\, by the end of the war\, Robert Rogers was a major leading a small battalion of his Rangers\, and the Rangers were the chief scouting unit for the British forces. Rogers’ Rangers are the direct ancestors of our modern U.S. Army Rangers. \nToday\, Rogers’ Rangers are primarily reenacted by members of Jaeger’s Battalion. Jaeger’s Battalion is a national\, colonial period historical reenactment group headquartered in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. This is one of the oldest reenacting groups in the country. The battalion serves as the umbrella group for the various state-based Ranger companies. At the Market Fair you will usually see Battalion Adjutant Bill Blair leading companies from Virginia\, Maryland and Pennsylvania\, and sometimes companies from much farther afield. \nColonial Commerce – It’s why you’re here!\nThe fort and the military reenactors are a major part of the event\, but the main draw at the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is the vendors. Expect about 150 vendors to set up shop selling their 18th-century goods. Events like this are essential to reenactors and living historians who need to outfit themselves with period-correct gear. \n \nIn addition to craftsmen\, there are vendors who offer the full range of 18th-century essentials. At Fort Frederick Market Fair\, you can fully outfit your person with 18th-century apparel from several excellent tailors. You could also buy every item you would need to outfit a comfortable camp\, from the tent all the way down to a colonial pot scrubber. And you can pick up all the muzzleloading gear you need\, from a custom rifle or musket to a handmade powder horn or a custom shooting bag. And\, if you don’t need any big-ticket items\, you’ll find a full range of small items like cleaning jags and forged screwdrivers. \nIn addition to the formal vendors\, you’ll find many reenactors offering a variety of gear for sale on informal “trade blankets”. Any camper may set up a blanket in front of their camp and offer goods for sale to passersby at Fort Frederick Market Fair. \nAbout Fort Frederick\nFort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres\, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort\, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings. The Virginia Regiment Captain George Mercer Co reenactors are a group of avid Living Historians dedicated to memorializing and reenacting Colonel George Washington’s Virginia Regiment known as the “Virginia Blues”. The regiment manned forts and outposts in Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, Maryland and North Carolina during the French and Indian War. We invite those with similar interests to join our group. \nAbout The Battle of Great Cacapon\nOne of the most important military engagements of the War in Virginia took place in the vicinity of Ft. Edwards on April 18\, 1756. In what has come to be called either the “Battle of Great Cacapon River” or “Mercer’s Massacre”\, Capt. John Fenton Mercer\, Ensign Thomas Carter and fifteen soldiers of a larger group were ambushed and killed when they left the safety of the fort to search for a band of Indians roaming in the area. This was the most fearful incident to occur near Winchester. It sent chills through the Governor and Burgesses in Williamsburg and impressed upon them the vulnerability of the frontier and the need for a defensive line of frontier forts.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the first half of the French and Indian War\, Edwards’s Fort was manned and maintained by the Virginia Regiment at Col. Washington’s orders. In later years after the war as bridges began to be built on important highways\, the road was moved to a location with high bluffs along the bank. When the Northwest Turnpike was completed in the 1830s\, Edwards’s home was no longer the center of town; it was then located well north of the highway. As Joseph Edwards’s heirs divided his lands and the town began to develop\, the no-longer-necessary wooden stockade rotted away. Eventually all traces of Edwards’s house and of the stockade fort disappeared.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nThe Fort Today\nLittle is known about the Fort at Joseph Edwards. Its location has been verified by preliminary archaeological excavations\, but much remains to be discovered. In May of 1756 after Mercer’s Massacre\, the House of Burgesses of the Colony of Virginia\, at the urging of Col. Washington\, ordered a chain of forts to be built from Henry Enoch’s at the Forks of Capon south to Halifax County. Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will recapture the struggles of that time during the “War for Empire” program\, in the largest French and Indian War re-enactment in the Carolinas that also will honor a Cherokee leader. \n\nFort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\nTensions spiraled into war with shifting allegiances among the British\, French and dozens of American Indian tribes\, principally the Cherokee in western North Carolina. “Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment” will examine the different people living on the North Carolina frontier in the 1750s and offer a glimpse of frontier life. \nDuring our Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\, trade demonstrations will include stone carving\, spinning\, cooking and woodworking; skills necessary for day-to-day survival. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. This event is designed to be a rich experience for both participants and visitors. \nMajor Robert Rogers force of both volunteers from the 27th foot\, and his own rangers headed out on an extended scout from Fort Edward along Lake George\, following an attack on a similar patrol from Captain Israel Putnam’s Connecticut rangers. Hiking on snowshoes due to the three feet of snow\, the tracks of Roger’s force were spotted on its march up the west side of Lake George. Near the north end of Lake George\, Major Rogers’ advanced scouts spotted their French counterparts. Rogers and his Rangers took up positions in a ravine\, setting his force in ambuscade to await whatever French patrol would come to meet him. \nThe French patrol that met Roger’s men proved far larger than he imagined\, and in this Battle on Snowshoes\, the rangers’ ambush was itself surrounded and overwhelmed. In deep woods on deep snow\, the rangers were forced to retreat with heavy casualties as the French regulars\, malice\, and natives pressed home their attack. Despite brave stands along the way\, this retreat quickly became chaotic as rangers\, Roger’s included\, ran for their lives from superior numbers of French. \nThere was not just one\, but three Battles On Snowshoes.Every other year at Fort Ticonderoga\, visitors can witness the re-enactment of a savage battle fought between the British Rangers and French soldiers on March 13\, 1758\, as described above. \n \nHowever\, a prelude to this battle occurred near Fort Carillon (now Fort Ticonderoga) on January 21\, 1757. Similar circumstances were evident\, in which Rogers’ Rangers were ambushed by a mixed troop of French regulars\, Canadian militiamen\, and Indians during a scouting expedition. Although the British had a distinct advantage due to their snowshoes\, they were largely outnumbered\, suffered heavy casualties and were forced to retreat under the cover of darkness. \nThe third and final Battle on Snowshoes occurred on March 7\, 1759 directly across from Fort Carillon\, beginning with a skirmish line composed of Rogers’ Rangers and a number of Iroquois allies. They successfully ambush a French wood-cutting detail on the eastern shore and take five prisoners. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. The unit was quickly adopted into the British army as an independent ranger company. It was trained by Major Robert Rogers as a rapidly deployed light infantry force tasked mainly with reconnaissance as well as conducting special operations against distant targets. DESCRIPTION:The Annual Fort Crevecoeur French and Indian War Reenactment will be held on August 5-6\, 2017 at Fort Crevecoeur in Creve Couer\, Illinois. Gates are open to the public Saturday and Sunday 9a – 5p. A small gate fee applies. All proceeds from the gate go towards the upkeep of Fort Crevecoeur Park. \nFrench and Indian War re-enactors portraying French\, British and Iroquois soldiers will provide demonstrations of camp life and skirmishes in the fort. \nThroughout the Fort Crevecoeur French and Indian War Reenactment\, vendors will sell food\, including buffalo burgers and homemade root beer\, and period items. Demonstrators will show visitors how to light fires\, make candles and throw knives and tomahawks. \nThroughout the Fort Crevecoeur French and Indian War Reenactment weekend\, French and Indian War Reenactors will portray life in a military encampment\, from the outfits they wore to the tents they slept in. French soldiers will march about in long-sleeve wool jackets and hats\, including a long-sleeve undershirt and vest. French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though. Re-enactors will bring these and other 18th century lifestyles back to life with blacksmithing demonstrations\, musket and artillery firings plus a special candlelight tour of Fort Loudoun. \nDaytime hours: 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. \nChristmas at Fort Loudoun begins early with Roll Call and the Raising of the Colors\, ending the daylight performance with the Lowering of the Colors. Garrison troops and officers provide insight into their daily routines with several displays of 18th century military might which included Artillery Drills\, Musket Drills\, Posting of the decorations Fort Loudoun Guard\, and marching in rank around the grounds\, as well as mock battles that are presented at some special events. \nThe Christmas program at Fort Loudoun offers us a vintage look at “Christmas Past.” A view of a more simple and humble time for those isolated far from home and country. SUMMARY:Fort Loudoun School of the Soldier
DESCRIPTION:Join the fight at the Fort Loudoun School of the Soldier on September 17-18\, 2016 at the Fort Loudoun State Historic Park in Vonore\, Tennessee. The Independent Company of South Carolina is looking for recruits to campaign against the French threat to our colony. As a result\, our officers are offering an event to be held at Fort Loudoun\, in the Overhills of our allies\, the Cherokee. Here\, members of the colonies can learn about service in His Majesty George II’s army\, and practice the necessary skills to protect our holdings against incursions by our enemies. \n[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5l-L6iN_II&width=540&height=333[/embedyt] \nOpen to all living historians\, interpreters\, and 18th Century enthusiasts\, this event will introduce participants to life in the European armies of the Seven Years War. Activities will allow participants to practice some of the necessary skills for soldiers\, and attend sessions on the lives of soldiers. Participants are encouraged to bring whatever 18th century kit they have assembled\, and be prepared for an evening in the field. \nParticipants will arrive Friday\, September 17 to spend the night in the Barracks of Fort Loudoun\, and awake the next morning to for training in the Infantry Drill of 1757. Following this there will be sessions on the appropriate equipment\, behavior\, and appearance for regular soldiers in His Majesty George II’s army\, Provincial Forces of the Southern Colonies\, and the Compagnies Franches de la Marine. \nAt the conclusion of these sessions\, participants will march out from the Fort to set up a military encampment on the park\, and get a glimpse in to military life on the campaign trail. \nThe cost for registration is $75.00. This expense will cover lodging\, food\, and attendance at the sessions for the weekend. Space for this event is limited to the first 30 applicants.
