DESCRIPTION:2019 John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger\n\nRate This Event\n \n                                    \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                    \nLearn Ranger skills at the Annual John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger on January 25-27\, 2019 at the Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. Each year during the last weekend of January\, Jaeger’s Battalion\, in concert with the Rangers of the Ohio Company\, Rutherford’s Rangers\, and The Friends of Fort Frederick conduct a John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger. All proceeds benefit the Friends of Fort Frederick. We will maintain 18th c. persona throughout the John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger weekend. If you are new to the hobby and do not have all your 18th c. gear\, you are welcome to attend and learn what you need for this hobby. \n\nJohn Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger\nThe purpose of the John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger is to promote the historical 18th century Ranger impression by providing accurate and updated information on Rogers’ Rangers and the cultures of the time. Subjects taught range from field skills that rangers required to cultures they encountered\, such as the Eastern Woodland Indian cultures. \nThe weekend John Jaeger Memorial School of the Ranger will involve a mix of lecture\, hands-on\, and simulated patrolling exercises designed to familiarize the participants with the skills necessary to understand all facets of the historic military specialization\, as well as lend insight to future research and portrayals. The unit was quickly adopted into the British army as an independent ranger company. It was trained by Major Robert Rogers as a rapidly deployed light infantry force tasked mainly with reconnaissance as well as conducting special operations against distant targets. Their tactics were built on earlier colonial precedents and were codified for the first time by Rogers. The tactics proved remarkably effective\, so much so that the initial company was expanded into a ranging corps of more than a dozen companies (containing as many as 1\,200–1\,400 men at its peak). The ranger corps became the chief scouting arm of British Crown forces by the late 1750s. DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort Point Living History Day\n\nRate This Event\n \n                                    \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                    \nThe Fort comes alive at Fort Point Living History Day on January 26\, 2019 at Fort Point in San Francisco\, California as re-enactors show what life was like there during the 1860s. Tours of the fort\, infantry and artillery demonstrations\, exhibits\, music of the period\, military parades\, and a speech by the Mayor of San Francisco (in 1861) are all part of the day’s activities. The raising of the garrison flag ceremony takes place soon after the fort opens. Admission is free. Talks and demonstrations will be held throughout the day; reenactors are happy to answer questions about history and various aspects of life during the Civil War. \n\nFort Point Living History Day\nThis Saturday\, the walls of Fort Point will again echo with the sounds of fifes and drums and tramp of boots as this San Francisco landmark celebrates Fort Point Living History Day. Come watch and interact with dozens of reenactors from the American Civil War Association portraying Union soldiers and civilians from the time of the War Between the States at the only Civil War-era brick fort west of the Mississippi. \nThis is a great family-friendly event that is both fun and educational. It’s exciting to march into the fort behind the fife-and-drum band\, and entering the courtyard to see only reenactors in period dress. Take the exit immediately after the toll plaza and head up Merchant Road. Turn left at the stop sign onto Lincoln Avenue and follow it down the hill to Marine Drive. \nParking: Available along the road and in a small lot at the fort. You can also park near the Warming Hut at Crissy Field and walk over to Fort Point. It can be really cold in this old brick fort\, even if it’s sunny out\, so dress in layered clothing. Restroom facilities and drinking water can be found outside the fort. \nAbout Fort Point\nFrom its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate\, Fort Point defended the San Francisco Bay following California’s Gold Rush through World War II. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of 3rd system brick masonry and interacts gracefully with the Golden Gate Bridge. Fort Point National Historic Site is open Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. The fort is located in San Francisco at 999 Marine Drive (at Long Avenue) right under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
