To commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Fort Blakeley\, we have an event-filled day of exciting tours\, informative educational programming\, and lively demonstrations planned. The Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment will be one of the largest reenactments of Alabama’s largest Civil War battle held in several years. The event will feature reenactments of the intense skirmishing which took place along the lines at Blakeley during the week-long siege of the fort in April of 1865 and the last grand charge of the Civil War which resulted in its capture will highlight the day’s events. \n\nBattle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment\nAlso included will be guided tours of the park’s battlefield\, weapons demonstrations\, and a special exhibit of artifacts associated with the fighting at Fort Blakeley. Souvenirs\, food\, and drinks may be purchased at the Wehle Center throughout the day. \nThe original and well-preserved battlefield will be the site of an authentic representation of conditions the 83rd Ohio Infantry and other Union troops experience before unseeding Confederate Brig. Gen. Francis Marion Cockrell’s defenders from four redoubts and other earthen fortifications. \nBefort the Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment\, it will be a living history encampment where both the federal troops and the Confederate troops will be working in the rifle pits and in the federal and Confederate works\, shoring up their shelters. Spectators will be shown some food demonstrations as well as digging in\, and there will probably some light skirmishes throughout the day as far as weapons demonstrations go. Starting at 10 a.m. and until about 3:30 p.m.\, the public will have an opportunity to tour the encampments\, see group demonstrations and talk to the individual soldiers. \nThe battle reenactment will cap off in the evening with a final assault that will be portraying the 83rd Ohio Regiment attacking Redoubt 4 and taking Redoubt 4\, which was manned by Cockrell’s Missouri Brigade. Then a federal flag will be planted in an approximately close area to where it happened in 1865. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The Virginia Regiment Captain George Mercer Co reenactors are a group of avid Living Historians dedicated to memorializing and reenacting Colonel George Washington’s Virginia Regiment known as the “Virginia Blues”. We invite those with similar interests to join our group. \nAbout The Battle of Great Cacapon\nOne of the most important military engagements of the War in Virginia took place in the vicinity of Ft. Edwards on April 18\, 1756. In what has come to be called either the “Battle of Great Cacapon River” or “Mercer’s Massacre”\, Capt. John Fenton Mercer\, Ensign Thomas Carter and fifteen soldiers of a larger group were ambushed and killed when they left the safety of the fort to search for a band of Indians roaming in the area. This was the most fearful incident to occur near Winchester. It sent chills through the Governor and Burgesses in Williamsburg and impressed upon them the vulnerability of the frontier and the need for a defensive line of frontier forts.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the first half of the French and Indian War\, Edwards’s Fort was manned and maintained by the Virginia Regiment at Col. Washington’s orders. In later years after the war as bridges began to be built on important highways\, the road was moved to a location with high bluffs along the bank. When the Northwest Turnpike was completed in the 1830s\, Edwards’s home was no longer the center of town; it was then located well north of the highway. As Joseph Edwards’s heirs divided his lands and the town began to develop\, the no-longer-necessary wooden stockade rotted away. Eventually all traces of Edwards’s house and of the stockade fort disappeared.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nThe Fort Today\nLittle is known about the Fort at Joseph Edwards. Its location has been verified by preliminary archaeological excavations\, but much remains to be discovered. In May of 1756 after Mercer’s Massacre\, the House of Burgesses of the Colony of Virginia\, at the urging of Col. Washington\, ordered a chain of forts to be built from Henry Enoch’s at the Forks of Capon south to Halifax County. All clothing\, camping gear and equipment used by participants must be appropriate to the time period from 1730 to 1790. Vendors must also meet these standards\, both in their clothing and equipment\, and in the wares offered for sale. First-time vendors are vetted in advance by the Friends of Fort Frederick Trade Committee before they are allowed to participate. \nThe 18th-century timeframe is in keeping with the event’s venue. The centerpiece of Fort Frederick State Park is a massive stone fortification that was built in 1756\, after the defeat of General Braddock exposed the western colonial frontier to attacks by the French and their native allies. \nDuring the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair\, a contingent of reenactors portraying French and Indian War-era Maryland provincial troops man the fort\, live in the barracks and provide interpretive events for visitors. These men portray members of Alexander Beall’s and Joshua Beall’s companies of Maryland forces. During the Market Fair\, the troops have a schedule of exhibitions that they perform. You can watch marching demonstrations\, flag-raising ceremonies or demonstrations of 18th-century military music. \nCivilian reenactors and living historians of every type that you could have found in 18th-century society can be found at the Fort Frederick Market Fair. Most of the campers portray typical frontier types\, dressing and equipping themselves as hunters or scouts. There is also a large contingent that prefers to portray the higher strata of colonial society\, so that\, among the rough-and-tumble long hunters you’ll find powdered-wig aristocrats and evening-gowned ladies. There are also quite a few reenactors who portray Native Americans of the period. \nRogers’ Rangers at the Market Fair\nFort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair also serves as one of the largest gatherings of Rogers’ Rangers reenactors. Roger’s Rangers started as an independent company of light troops. Their job was to serve as scouts and skirmishers that operated well forward of conventional troops\, harassing the French and securing intelligence. They performed their work so well that\, by the end of the war\, Robert Rogers was a major leading a small battalion of his Rangers\, and the Rangers were the chief scouting unit for the British forces. Rogers’ Rangers are the direct ancestors of our modern U.S. Army Rangers. \nToday\, Rogers’ Rangers are primarily reenacted by members of Jaeger’s Battalion. Jaeger’s Battalion is a national\, colonial period historical reenactment group headquartered in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. This is one of the oldest reenacting groups in the country. The battalion serves as the umbrella group for the various state-based Ranger companies. At the Market Fair you will usually see Battalion Adjutant Bill Blair leading companies from Virginia\, Maryland and Pennsylvania\, and sometimes companies from much farther afield. \nColonial Commerce – It’s why you’re here!\nThe fort and the military reenactors are a major part of the event\, but the main draw at the Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is the vendors. Expect about 150 vendors to set up shop selling their 18th-century goods. Events like this are essential to reenactors and living historians who need to outfit themselves with period-correct gear. \n \nIn addition to craftsmen\, there are vendors who offer the full range of 18th-century essentials. At Fort Frederick Market Fair\, you can fully outfit your person with 18th-century apparel from several excellent tailors. You could also buy every item you would need to outfit a comfortable camp\, from the tent all the way down to a colonial pot scrubber. And you can pick up all the muzzleloading gear you need\, from a custom rifle or musket to a handmade powder horn or a custom shooting bag. Any camper may set up a blanket in front of their camp and offer goods for sale to passersby at Fort Frederick Market Fair. \nAbout Fort Frederick\nFort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres\, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort\, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings.
