General Horatio Gates\, their newly-appointed commander\, quickly sprung into action reorganizing\, resupplying\, and restoring the discipline of America’s northern defense. Gates put soldiers from New England\, New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania to work building earthworks all around the old Fort of Ticonderoga and constructing a navy to defend Lake Champlain. \n1776 was a year of rebuilding the Northern Army as part of building a new nation. While the Continental Congress discussed the finer points of declaring independence in Philadelphia\, the shattered remnants of the Continental Army which had come so close to capturing Quebec trickled back down to Fort Ticonderoga. Frost bitten\, starving\, and decimated by smallpox these soldiers began building up bulwarks and America’s first navy to defend their new nation. A new Continental Army emerged reinforced by soldiers from Pennsylvania\, Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, New Jersey\, New Hampshire and New York\, to guard Fort Ticonderoga. \nWhile the declaration itself was signed July 4th\, news of the document and the patriotic sentiment it carried would not reach the Northern Army at Fort Ticonderoga until July 28th. Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. Years earlier\, the Lewis and Clark expedition’s historic first meeting with American Indians was held on its bluff. \nLife at an 1820s military post is depicted at this Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in July and other  Living History Weekends at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park that take place from May through September each year. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, volunteers will demonstrate period trades\, such as blacksmithing\, carpentry\, tinsmithing and coopering\, and crafts such as quilting\, spinning and weaving. Members of the American Mountain Men group will have an encampment on the grounds\, portraying the fur trappers who helped settle the region. During this week long camp children learn about what life was like during the French and Indian War by practicing marching and musketry\, defending the area from French attacks\, learning surgical procedures in the infirmary\, trading deer skins for goods\, various trades\, and much\, much more. \nFort Loudoun Junior Ranger Camp runs Monday-Friday\, 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. It is open to children ages 8-12. Represented is a variety of unique characters\, all gathering together after a rigorous winter of trapping. As was true two hundred years ago\, goods are “traded”\, stories told\, and fun times enjoyed by rendezvous campers\, traders\, and visitors. \n\nForts Folle Avoine Fur Trade Rendezvous\nWhen the fur traders packed their canoes with precious furs and began the arduous journey north after the long cold winter at Forts Folle Avoine\, their destination was Grand Portage. There\, for a few weeks before preparing for the return trip\, they could relax as they took part in the much anticipated Rendezvous celebration. \nThe Great Folle Avoine Fur Trade Rendezvous includes demonstrations of period skills including black powder shooting\, archery and tomahawk throwing. Tasty food prepared in the fur-trade era manner is a treat. When the North West Company first arrived\, they built a trading post where the Indian population and the French explorers bartered for furs\, primarily beaver fur which was incredibly cherished among the European market. Fur traders traveled hundreds of miles and portaged in every direction anticipating the rendezvous\, also known as a meeting place where trading and bartering took place. After furs and other products\, were traded\, the furs were then carried along the Yellow River onto Montreal and then eventually to Europe. At the end of the 1805 trading season\, the fur traders loaded their canoes\, traveled along the Yellow River and never returned to Fort Folle Avoine.
