At the Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, you will learn about the second Seminole Indian War from soldiers in period dress\, camped in front of the fort; this free event includes musket firing demonstrations and programs in the fort at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both days. \nAdmission Free – Parking Free – Public Welcome \nPark Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. \nAs the Second Seminole War escalated across Florida in 1835\, U.S. Army orders were issued to build a string of over 200 forts to garrison men and supplies in an effort to supress the Seminole Indians. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. These pioneer homes and a school building are furnished with period furniture\, appliances\, kitchen items and hand tools. A few of these Florida cracker homes included the Beehead Ranch house\, the Taylor Creek Yates home\, and the 1916 Union Schoolhouse. This family friendly event is extremely popular\, one of Central Florida’s most interesting traditional gatherings. The Cracker houses on display belonged to families with familiar names from Florida’s pioneer days\, such as Simmons\, Wheeler\, Bass\, and Yates. \nLocation\nFort Christmas Historical Park\n1300 North Fort Christmas Road\nChristmas\, FL 32709\n407-254-9312 \nFor More Information: Call 407-254-9312 or Email Trudy.Trask@ocfl.net \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Christmas Cracker Christmas on the weekend before Easter at the Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas\, Florida. \nTags:Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Reenactment\, Fort Christmas Historical Park\, Fort Christmas \nView other History Festivals & Events

Use the opacity adjustment sliders to seamlessly travel back and forth between the two. The markers reveal additional information on the position and movement of commanders and troops\, and some correspond to the physical markers on the battleground that were raised by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. \n \nAbout The San Jacinto Monument\nThe San Jacinto Monument was constructed between April 21\, 1936 and April 21\, 1939 as a memorial to all those who fought for the Texas independence. Efforts to design and construct the memorial were led by Houston businessman Jesse H. Jones. The Monument is the tallest masonry column in the world. It is more than 12 feet taller that the Washington Monument. It weights approximately 70 million pounds. The star atop the Monument\, which symbolizes the Lone Star State\, is 34 feet tall and weighs approximately 220 tons. The Monument is faced with Texas Cordova shellstone\, a type of limestone noted for its creamy color and fossilized texture. \nAbout The San Jacinto Museum of History\nThe San Jacinto Museum of History was chartered in 1938 to “preserve and revisualize the history of early Texas.” The Museum’ s collection spans more than four centuries of early Texas history\, from the beginnings of European activity in the New World through Texas as a state in the United States. Emphasis is on colonial Texas as a part of Mexico\, the Republic of Texas\, and the early days of statehood. The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Library houses a collection of more than 250\,000 documents and manuscripts and 30\,000 volumes of rare books and pamphlets. The Jesse H. Jones Theatre for Texas Studies and the Museum’s presentation Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto opened in October\, 1990. \nLocation\nSan Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site\n3523 Independence Parkway\nLa Porte\, TX 77571\n(281) 479-2431 \nFor More Information\nSan Jacinto Museum of History: Call 281.479.2421; Email sjm@sanjacinto-museum.org\nSan Jacinto Monument & Museum: Call (281) 479-2421\nTx Parks & Wildlife: Cait Johnson: Call (281) 479-2431\, x277; Email caitlin.johnson@tpwd.texas.gov \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment on the third Saturday of April at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in La Porte\, Texas. \nTags: San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment\, San Jacinto Battle Reenactment\, Reenactment of the Battle of San Jacinto\, Texas Living History\, San Jacinto Day Battle Reenactment & Festival \nView Other Texas Revolution Events\nView Other Living History Events
