All re-enactors from the French & Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade are welcome. \n\nMille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\nSince 1993\, the Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous has been held in late June in a rolling field in the woods south of Mille Lacs Lake. The event produces a bloom of white canvas in the form of tents in the style of 200 years ago. The rendezvous has become a highly regarded living history event within Minnesota. It’s a regular destination for up to 150 living history participants living in a frontier city of 55 to 75 primitive camps\, and for many\, a yearly reunion. \nA big part of the experience is the camaraderie among the re-enactors\, known as voyageurs and buckskinners\, while the other is the passion of demonstrating skills and crafts of 200 years ago to kids of all ages. The fur trade era is well connected to the Mille Lacs area\, and there were multiple trading posts\, trails and portages present. And both Aitkin and Morrison Counties were named after fur traders. \nThe Rendezvous Camp is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.\, with a donation needed for entry by those over 10 years old. The location is six miles south of Isle or 16 miles north of Ogilvie on Hwy. 47\, then one mile west on Red Road. \nThe sights\, sounds and smells of 200 years ago come alive once again\, with the opportunity to bring home some Americana of the time that the participants make and sell. There will be food\, blacksmiths\, woodcarvers\, woodworkers\, ropemakers\, music\, a storyteller and surprises. It’s never known just who might show up. The event kicks off with a 21-gun national salute at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Impromptu skills demonstrations and music are ongoing throughout the event by many artisans and primitive campers. \nThis event has been presented each year since 1993 by the Mille Lacs Lake Historical society of Isle\, Minnesota. This was a defining moment in the history of our state and nation. The First Siege of Fort Meigs was a pivotal fight that would help turn the tide of war and usher in a series of American victories that would secure the Ohio frontier. General William Henry Harrison wrote that day\, “It is at length reduced to certainty that the enemy are about to carry into effect their threatened attack on this post” and urged his men “To your posts then\, fellow Soldiers\, and remember that the eyes of your Country are upon you!” \n \n\nAt 2 o’clock in the morning the British opened their artillery upon our garrison from their gun-boats… At 8 o’clock they hoisted the red flag at their lower battery and commenced firing with 24-\, 12- and 6-pounders\, and eight inch mortars. Started in 1969\, the Chippewa County Historical Society of Wisconsin is located in the original convent of Notre Dame Church. The convent was built in 1881. The four-story building has 49 rooms and five bathrooms. When the Chippewa County Historical Society took possession of the building in 1990\, the Sisters had not been living there for two years. The building required a lot of repair. While the Society is using the building rent-free\, it is responsible for the continued repairs and modifications. While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Lancaster Lupton first came to the area with a military expedition in 1835. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. Come see his trade fort and walk through the inner plaza to visit the blacksmith and carpenter shops\, living quarters\, kitchen and food preparation rooms\, trade rooms\, cantina and storage room with historic artifacts.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout South Platte Valley Historic Park\nHistoric Fort Lupton (aka Fort Lancaster) and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park encompasses 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton\, Colorado. The land consists of a large natural and camping area immediately along the river and a high bench of land where the original Fort Lancaster was located.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAlong the river\, in groves of cottonwood trees are camping areas that can be used by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops with reservations. These camping areas are also used by the re-enactment department of the SPVHS – the Tallow River Trappers – to hold periodic rendezvous events. At the north end of the historic park is a muzzleloading shooting range leased by the Fort Lupton Muzzleloading Club. \nStart your tour of the historic park at the re-creation of Fort Lancaster\, which was in operation from 1836 to 1844. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours.
