The military organizations that are responsible to the Kentucky Department of Parks are the Western Federal Blues\, and the Southern Division. They successfully planned and executed the 150th Anniversary Event and we are pleased to have them put forth the time\, trouble and expense to help us raise much needed preservation funding for the battlefield. \nBattle of Perryville Reenactment scenarios?\nIt is very easy to plan the scenarios for Perryville. The generals wrote them 150 plus years ago. The park historian has each army’s movement broken down into 15 minute increments and the scenarios will be scripted to those movements. \nThe Cornfield: Saturday 2:00 PM\nThis scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. While General Daniel Donelson’s brigade was moving forward into attack position\, Brigadier General William R. Terrill’s Union Brigade was in the process of forming their line on the “Open Knob”. Maney’s Brigade\, assisted by Wharton’s Cavalry\, attacked with vigor\, rolling over Terrill’s regiments as they arrived on the field piecemeal. \nThe Fight for Bottom’s Barn: Sunday 1:00 PM\nThis battle scenario simulates the events that took place at approximately 3:00 PM on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 1862. Since about 10:00 in the morning\, William H. Lytle’s brigade had taken up position on the right flank of Union 1st Corps commanded by General Alexander M. McCook. The 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry\, supported by the 15th Kentucky infantry\, were positioned in Henry P. Bottom’s barn yard overlooking Henry Bottom’s House. Since there appeared little threat to their front\, another regiment\, the 42nd Indiana\, was sent forward to the semi-dry bed of Doctor’s Creek to rest\, boil some coffee\, and fill their empty canteens in the drought-stricken area. Suddenly\, the calm was broken by a fusillade of Confederate artillery shot and shell landing all around. Soon after\, two heavily supported Confederate Infantry brigades came out of the woods and attacked towards the 3rd Ohio and the 15th Kentucky\, driving the hapless 42nd Indiana in a panic from the creek bed. \nThe Confederates had problems too. Bushrod R. Johnson’s Confederate brigade was assigned to attack this area. The fur trade was the primary reason for the exploration of the American frontier and this enterprise was spurred on by the demand for pelts which were used to make the very expensive and extremely popular felt hats that were fashionable in Europe from 1550 to 1850. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. If you have any questions about anything you see\, just ask one of the reenactors. They have spent much time researching their persona\, and most are happy to share what they know. Gates open at 10 am both days\, with the battles taking place on Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 2pm as history comes alive in Andersonville\, Georgia. The Andersonville Historic Fair takes place on the first full weekend each October\, \n\nAndersonville Historic Fair\nSutlers selling Civil War uniforms and accouterments\, guns\, swords\, flags and Civil War era civilian clothing add color and interest as do craftsmen such as gunsmiths\, blacksmiths\, basket makers\, quilters\, weavers\, and artists of all kinds. \nVisitors from all walks of life came to Andersonville last weekend to enjoy a parade\, sample the wares of the many food vendors\, and take a trip back to a time when the nation was on the brink of being torn asunder by a brutal war. The first big activity is the parade on the main street on Saturday at 11 am. The Saturday parade\, an annual favorite\, includes a marching band and a wide variety of participants and entertainmen\, and features marching soldiers wearing the colors of both the Union and Confederate armies of the civil war. Special entertainment include performances by The Southern Gunslingers\, puppet shows\, line dancing\, clogging\, bluegrass\, jazz and country band performances\, and gospel singing. \nWar reenactors will mingle with visitors\, clad in period-accurate garb to accentuate the many historic attractions available to festival goers\, including a working blacksmith shop\, a variety of antique and collectibles stores\, arts and crafts vendors\, reproductions of buildings from the 1860s and\, of course\, the Civil War battle reenactments. \nThere is a lot to do at the Andersonville Historic Fair and Civil War Reenactment and in the Anderson Historic Village. The two-day 18th Century Market Fair at Locust Grove features staged battle reenactments between British and American troops\, historically accurate arts and crafts from blacksmiths and Georgian age crafters and roaming historians filled with information and anecdotes that are great for all ages. \n\n18th Century Market Fair at Locust Grove\nJoin with Locust Grove and the Illinois Regiment of Virginia as they bring the spirit of the past alive with the 18th Century Market Fair at Locust Grove. You can participate in 18th c. style entertainment\, purchase replicas of 18th century military and household items\, enjoy food and drink as our founders did\, meet and converse with early Americans. Mock battles for our country’s independence feature General George Rogers Clark’s own company\, the Illinois Regiment of Virginia\, as well as British Dragoons and Marines\, and German Hessians. \nExperience Historic Locust Grove as it comes alive with the sounds of chatting and bargaining\, the smells of wood smoke and gunpowder\, and all the sights you would expect from a Market Fair set in the 1780s. The property is divided between the Americans and the British\, so be sure to take a tour of both camps to see and hear both sides of the story. \nMarket Fairs seem special to us today\, but they were commonplace in Colonial America. Markets held in town squares or other designated marketplaces allowed far-flung members of the community to come into nascent towns to buy\, sell\, and trade goods and gossip. Markets helped communities to grow and towns to be more firmly established\, with permanent stores and other trappings of civilization. \nHere at Locust Grove\, Market Fair is treated in much the same way as in the 1780s. The community has grown a great deal since the founding of Louisville in 1778\, and they enjoy this time to catch up with neighbors and friends.
