Artillery pieces may not be pulled back to camp with a modern vehicle until\nthe camps have closed to the public.\nOnly full-sized artillery pieces are allowed. Carriages must have 57 inch wheels. No mortars or mountain howitzers are allowed.\nArtillery pieces must participate in the battle both days to qualify for a bounty. Demonstration pieces do not qualify for bounties.\nAll scenarios must be approved by the U.S. and C.S. Commanders before the reenactment. Unscripted hand-to-hand combat is prohibited. Do not point firearms at any person.\nYou must provide adequate supervision of powder stores. Powder\, charges\, cartridges\, and primers must be stored in special containers at a safe distance from\ncampfires.\nParticipants under age 14 may not carry or fire black powder weapons of any kind. Participants 14 and 15 years of age may carry black powder weapons with a parent or guardian. Children and civilian reenactors are not permitted on the field during re-enactments\, except for functional musicians (boys 14 or older who can actually play a drum\, fife or bugle). Boys under 14 are not to serve as color bearers during battle re-enactments. Civilian reenactors may request prior written approval from Wade House event coordinator\, Jim Willaert\, before the event to participate in battle re-enactments.\nMounted cavalry units must station at least one unit member near their unit’s horses when public visitors are in camp. Horses will be inspected by cavalry commanders for health problems before being allowed to participate. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health\, horses are not allowed within 500 feet of food concession areas.\nThere will be no unscripted “tactical” combat of any type during the event. Firearms will not be discharged at any time after sundown. If you would like to plan a scenario that will not take place on the battlefield\, please contact the event coordinator.\nNo modern weapons are allowed. Campaign-style camping is also encouraged.\nMilitary Dependent/Civilian Camp: For military/civilian personnel who wish to camp authentically with friends and family. This camp will have Union and Confederate sections.\nChain of Command: Wade House Historic Site\, through its Director\, David\nWarner\, and Curator of Interpretation and Collections\, Jim Willaert\, will ultimately be responsible for all aspects of the event. The Union military commander will be responsible for Union activities on the battlefield. The Confederate military commander will be responsible for Confederate activities on the battlefield. Names of these commanders will be released to pre-registered participants in advance of\nthe event.\nPeriod camping may be set up in designated areas only. Modern tents are not allowed on the grounds during the event with the exception of the Boy Scout camp. Camping in structures other than period-appropriate tents must be pre-approved by Wade House. This includes historic vehicles.\nCamp furniture used during the event should be of period style and kept to a minimum. Blankets\, quilts and other bedding used during the public hours of the event should be appropriate for the Civil War period\, in general use by the common person in mid-war. Visible containers and utensils should be of the proper type common to general period usage. Please restrict lighting devices to candles and period appropriate oil lamps. Smoking during public hours is limited to pipes\, cigars and period cigarettes.\nPlease keep modern coolers and modern equipment hidden during the public hours of the event. Televisions\, portable radios\, boom boxes\, music devices\, and propane lanterns are prohibited. Cell phone use is restricted to emergencies only (or out of sight of the public). Modern cameras and video recorders may not be carried onto the battlefield or used during a battle re-enactment. Please use cameras discreetly in the camps during public hours.\nDo not use obvious 21st century adornments in your personal impression\,\nincluding sunglasses\, wristwatches\, or other modern jewelry. The Wade House Site Director and his designees reserve the right to correct these faults. Anyone who has such an obvious unauthentic presentation will be asked to correct this immediately. Failure to comply will mean dismissal from the event.\nAll military personnel and civilian participants should be attired in\nappropriate historic clothing during the event. All participants must maintain 1860s impressions from 9 am – 5 pm Saturday and 9 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Wade House will not exclude women from participating as soldiers during the event. However\, all soldiers will have to pass inspection in order to participate in drills and battles. All Wisconsin laws related to the serving and consumption of alcohol will be observed.\n\n\n[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout Wade House\nThe Wade House Historical Site\, also called Old Wade House\, is a 240-acre (97 ha) open-air museum in Greenbush\, Wisconsin. A Wisconsin historic site\, the site is operated by a Wisconsin Historical Society. The site contains nine structures\, three of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The namesake structure is the Sylvanus Wade House constructed in 1848–1849. Live historic interpreters\, wearing period style clothing\, populate the park during summer operations. The attack on the Kentucky settlement of Boonesborough was led by Chief Blackfish\, a Shawnee leader allied to the British. Months before the battle\, Blackfish had captured and adopted Daniel Boone\, the founder of Boonesborough. Boone escaped the Shawnees in time to lead the defense of the settlement. Blackfish’s siege was unsuccessful and was lifted after ten days. Boone was then court-martialed by fellow officers who suspected him of having British sympathies. Boone was acquitted\, but he soon moved away from Boonesborough. \nAbout Fort Boonesborough\nRichard Henderson\, founder of the Transylvania Company in 1775\, chose Daniel Boone to head a party of 31 axe men to clear a path through the Cumberland Gap that would run from Long Island of the Holston River\, Tennessee\, to Otter Creek of the Kentucky River. Blazing the trail presented extraordinary difficulties – the route through the wilderness was a hunter’s trace that was too narrow for a wagon. Seating is set up around the area where the intertribal dancing is to take place is for the dancers\, not the spectators\, so bring your own lawn chairs. It is good to ask before taking a picture out of respect for those who may have religious reasons for avoiding photos. No one should ever enter the dance arena unless invited. Do not touch the clothing of any dancer. A good rule of thumb is to wait for the reaction of the Native onlookers. If they clap\, then everyone claps. Most of the time the emcee will tell the audience what is going on and what to do. \n\nMedicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\nAttending a powwow gives spectators the opportunity to glance into the history of Native Americans\, a glimpse of a centuries-old tradition and a chance to gaze upon the beauty of their regalia while listening to the rhythmic beat of their drums and their voices lifted in song. \nFood vendors will also be on-site at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow providing the always popular Indian tacos and fry bread. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. If a powwow or celebration is publicized\, it is open to the public. Sometimes\, it may be open to the public but there is a charge. In that case\, it becomes more of an exhibition display. \n \nPowwow Dances\nThe Gourd Dance\, which is performed at many powwows\, including the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, originated in the 1800s among the Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. It was thought that because the snake lived so close to the ground he understood the problems of the soil and its need for water. The Indians performed the dance to the snake so he might take a message to the gods to send rain to the plants. The dances portray the snake coiling\, striking\, retreating and returning to strike again. \nOther dances that you will see at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, as well as many other powwows\, includes the Round Dance\, Buffalo Dance\, War Dance and the Flag Dance\, a dance that nearly every Indian tribe has composed in recent years to honor the men and women who have served in all branches of the armed forces during the various wars. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. These pioneer homes and a school building are furnished with period furniture\, appliances\, kitchen items and hand tools. John Brown\, no stranger to dangerous missions\, helped engineer the first capture of Ticonderoga in 1775. With the stakes all the higher\, he would test his luck again. As General Gates prepared to stop the British advance on Albany\, he ordered General Lincoln to divide\, divert\, and harass General Burgoyne’s supply lines back to Canada. Colonel Brown chose his men carefully\, allowed first pick of the ragtag patriot force assembled by General Lincoln at Pawlet\, Vermont. Massachusetts and Vermont militia men would get their chance to strike a major blow against General Burgoyne’s attack to divide the colonies. Steadying them would be regulars from Colonel Warner’s regiment of Vermonters. Out front\, Vermont rangers were to lead the way. Leading the rangers was\, Captain Benjamin Whitcomb\, a ranger so skilled in his craft he was a wanted man to the British Army. \nRushing down into the LeChute river valley from Lake George landing\, Brown’s men captured 330 British prisoners and set 118 American POWs free. Dawn at Fort Ticonderoga would see British Cannons atop Mount Defiance\, which forced the American’s to flee that summer\, turned on the British garrison itself. British soldiers awoke to the sight of a Brunswick soldier cut in half by a British cannon ball fired by Brown’s men from the summit of that hill. Rearmed with captured British weapons\, American POWs got a chance to settle their score shoulder to shoulder with Brown’s militia\, regulars\, and rangers. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood recuperated at the house after his leg was amputated\, and the leg was buried nearby. Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced.
