Competitions include traditional blackpowder shooting for rifles\, pistols\, trade guns\, and shotguns. All shooting\, except for shotguns\, is done on the trail. Regular aggregate includes the scores from the rifle\, pistol\, and the hawk and knife trails. Read the shooters’ rules you will receive at registration and receive bonus points. Additional activities such as the Fort Shoot\, Grub Shoot\, and shotgun match\, plus the “Fox shoot” offer other exciting and fun black powder shooting contests. \nEvergreen Muzzleloaders Fall Harvest Rendezvous Contests also include: Primitive Archery\, and the “Hunter’s Trail”\, which is where new shooters try their skills using just rifles. John Brown\, no stranger to dangerous missions\, helped engineer the first capture of Ticonderoga in 1775. With the stakes all the higher\, he would test his luck again. As General Gates prepared to stop the British advance on Albany\, he ordered General Lincoln to divide\, divert\, and harass General Burgoyne’s supply lines back to Canada. Colonel Brown chose his men carefully\, allowed first pick of the ragtag patriot force assembled by General Lincoln at Pawlet\, Vermont. Massachusetts and Vermont militia men would get their chance to strike a major blow against General Burgoyne’s attack to divide the colonies. Steadying them would be regulars from Colonel Warner’s regiment of Vermonters. Out front\, Vermont rangers were to lead the way. Leading the rangers was\, Captain Benjamin Whitcomb\, a ranger so skilled in his craft he was a wanted man to the British Army. \nRushing down into the LeChute river valley from Lake George landing\, Brown’s men captured 330 British prisoners and set 118 American POWs free. Dawn at Fort Ticonderoga would see British Cannons atop Mount Defiance\, which forced the American’s to flee that summer\, turned on the British garrison itself. British soldiers awoke to the sight of a Brunswick soldier cut in half by a British cannon ball fired by Brown’s men from the summit of that hill. Rearmed with captured British weapons\, American POWs got a chance to settle their score shoulder to shoulder with Brown’s militia\, regulars\, and rangers. Originally built by Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland to protect the frontier during the French and Indian War\, his decision to build it of stone made it a lasting monument\, and a place to reuse. Twenty years later George Washington sent one of his Colonels to the Fort to turn it into a Prison camp\, and throughout the War of Independence 1000 British prisoners were kept captive\, guarded by American Troops. By the Civil War the Fort was in ruins and used as farmland\, but with the proximity of the Canal and Railway\, Union troops would often camp in those ruins to protect those supply lines from Confederate raiders. While not a turning point in history for any of those conflicts\, the program will allow a closer look at life for the common soldier serving in the Wars that shaped the Nation. Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced. While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. The Fair at New Boston is on the former site of two Shawnee villages\, Peckuwe and Kispoko. Handicrafts\, games\, and demonstrations of Shawnee\, Mingo\, Miami\, Wyandotte\, and other tribes are featured. All day\, you can learn how food was prepared in camp at live cooking demonstrations. This is also one of the shadiest places to come on a hot\, sunny afternoon. \nMusic\nMusic was enjoyed in 1797 in many different forms\, as it is now. Relax in a historic tavern while listening to music of the era. Musicians playing violins\, mandolins\, guitars\, and even bagpipes move from tavern to tavern and rove throughout the area. The coffeehouse is a center of entertainment and a place where you can enjoy a game of checkers or chess. \nBattle Reenactment and Cannon\nThrill to the boom of the full-sized Revolutionary War cannon. The Mad River Light Artillery Revolutionary War reenactor group sets up their bronze British Light six-pounder at the top of the hill near the flagpole and militia encampment. This group will demonstrate cannon firing many times throughout each day. \nEach afternoon\, the Fair at New Boston features the excitement of a battle reenactment. Our reenactment features militia on foot and on horse\, cannons\, Shawnee warriors\, and British Crown troops. After the battle\, visit the militia camps on the hill between Hertzler House and the George Rogers Clark Memorial. The First Mad River Light Artillery near the flag pole will be available to answer questions. \nGrand Camera Obscura\nNear the entrance to the Fair at New Boston\, an oddly shaped tent will most likely be first to catch your attention. It’s the Grand Camera Obscura. Fair attendees can be among a relatively fortunate few who can enjoy this historical scientific attraction\, which is just like the one seen in Paris more than 200 years ago. Step into the round tent and be prepared to be amazed. \n\nPremier Living History Event\nThere is time after the battle to finish shopping\, get something to eat\, and catch another of the entertainers. You will also want to see the closing ceremonies at the end of the day. \nAll of this is why the Fair at New Boston is recognized as a premiere living history event. All the music\, entertainment\, clothing\, methods of cooking\, foods served\, merchandise booths\, and equipment used by the artisans are juried (or judged) to ensure authenticity to the period. It is also special because it is held on an historic site. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Throughout the next three months professional soldiers and militiamen alike persevered through cold winter weather and mud that would at times be knee-deep. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. Don’t miss out on the formal ball or Lincoln’s speech. \nFood\nYou can’t talk about the Civil War Muster without talking about food and most importantly the Root Beer and Lemonade stand. It’s easy to find on the corner of Brown and Randolph streets. It’s always easy to find\, just look for the longest line. The best part is once you purchase your bottle (they offer a variety of sizes) you can take it back and have it refilled at a discounted price. Usually very close to the root beer stand is the kettle corn. Don’t worry you won’t have any problem finding it. Just take a deep sniff and follow your nose to the sweet smell of cooking kettle corn. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Bring something to sit on while watching the battle\, blankets or camp chairs work fine. Bring or be prepared to purchase water. There is little shade at Cascades Falls Park and you will want to stay hydrated. Wear\, and bring\, sunscreen and slip on your comfy walking shoes. If you have little ones\, or someone that is sensitive to loud noises\, consider bringing a set of ear plugs. The battle gets very loud. \n \nBonus Info\nThis is a FREE event. Fort Frederick was built in 1756 to defend the frontier against French and Indian raiding parties coming east from the French Fort Duquesne\, in what is now Pittsburgh. Fort Frederick is unique because of its strong stone wall\, large size\, and roomy barracks. Fort Frederick also saw service during the American Revolution as a prison for British soldiers. \nFor the next 131 years\, the fort and surrounding lands were farmed. During the Civil War\, Union troops were often stationed near the fort to guard the C & O Canal. In 1922\, the State of Maryland acquired the fort. During the Great Depression of the 1930s\, a company of the Civilian Conservation Corps restored the fort and began development of the state park. In 1975\, the park reconstructed two soldier’s barracks inside the fort. These barracks are open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on the weekends in the spring and fall. A night firing of the cannons will occur shortly after sunset. \nOn Sunday the re-enactment of the Battle of Dry Creek will begin at 1:30 p.m. THERE IS NO COST FOR SPECTATORS. The camps will also open to the public 10:00 am on Saturday. \nReenactor Registration & Information\nBattle of Dry Creek Reenactment Pre-Registration (received before June 30) will be $10.00 per re-enactor which increases to $15.00 after that date and for walk-ons. Children under 12 years of age are free. Cannon bounties will again be paid at $100.00 for full sized cannons and $75.00 for 3/4 scale cannons and Mountain howitzers. \nRegistered re-enactors (military and civilian) will have access to showers located in the nearby Greenbrier State Forest Campground.
