This Labor Day weekend\, characters from a distant period in Wisconsin’s past will come to life when Baraboo’s Spirit Lake Mountain Men and friends and visitors gather for the annual Baraboo River Rendezvous. \n\nBaraboo River Rendezvous\nExperience Wisconsin’s pre-1840s fur trade era rendezvous on Spirit Point along the Baraboo River near Mill Race Drive. From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday though Sunday\, participants will be dressed in buckskins\, or other period clothing\, carrying muskets and demonstrating for visitors the skills that allowed fur trappers and traders to make a living before extensive European settlement of the Great Lakes Region. \nBaraboo River Rendezvous is a very family oriented event\, making it ideal for a Labor Day weekend\, so don’t leave anyone at home! The Baraboo River Rendezvous is a fur trade era event nestled in the trees along the Baraboo river. The Chippewa River Rendezvous has grown to over 4000 visitors during the weekend encampment. Admission is free for this two day event and is as educational and it is entertaining for the whole family. \nJoin the The thousands of attendees are able to walk along the banks of the beautiful Chippewa River and travel back through time to the late 1600’s and learn about the history of Wisconsin and the people who once lived here. From the Ojibwa to the French\, English\, Irish and Scotsmen\, to the pioneers of the western frontier. You will see pre-1840 Fur trade and Civil War camps and Artillery. \nVisitors can sit with a blacksmith\, a Spinner of wool or a Dyer or Cloth and other living history demontratons. You can try your own hand at making an arrowhead or starting a fire without a match. The Chippewa River Rendezvous offers everyone the opportunity to experience life in a tipi\, a single pole lodge or a Civil War sibly and learn how our everyday items were made: soap\, clothing\, bows and arrows\, bullets and knives. Or visit a trapper camp as he shares his knowledge of trapping\, skinning\, preserving hides and trading furs. \nIn addition\, The Chippewa River Rendezvous features primitive games and competitions for all ages including Frying Pan Toss\, Hawk & Knife Throwing\, Liars Contest\, Treasure Hunt in the Hay\, and Cat and Mouse. It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. Throughout the next three months professional soldiers and militiamen alike persevered through cold winter weather and mud that would at times be knee-deep. Despite horrid weather and disease in the camp\, the American army was able to complete Fort Meigs by the end of April\, 1813\, just in time for a British attack. The Jackson Civil War Muster is the largest\, longest running Civil War event in the Midwest and offers educational family fun for all ages. Join us and experience history come to life. \n\nJackson Civil War Muster\nMore than 1\,500 participants bring the 1860s to life at the Jackson Civil War Muster\, attended by around 30\,000 spectators every year. Since 1984\, the annual two-day Muster has featured the reenactment of a different battle on each day. The battles alternate each year\, so last year’s battle will never be the same as this year’s. It’s a unique opportunity to relive a turning point in our country’s history\, and one that few reenactments can beat. \nA Weekend in the Past\nAn average morning at the Jackson Civil War Muster begins with battalion drills from both sides\, Union and Confederate. Events follow in the Historic Village of Jacksonburgh\, a battle encampment re-creation that houses historian lectures\, impersonators and period music in the hours leading up to the battle. The main attraction features 1\,500 reenactors armed with weapons\, uniforms and personalities that would have been commonplace during the Civil War. Guests and participants often join for a concert\, a military ball and an artillery “night fire” when the battels are over. Admission is free for spectators. Don’t miss out on the formal ball or Lincoln’s speech. \nFood\nYou can’t talk about the Civil War Muster without talking about food and most importantly the Root Beer and Lemonade stand. It’s easy to find on the corner of Brown and Randolph streets. It’s always easy to find\, just look for the longest line. The best part is once you purchase your bottle (they offer a variety of sizes) you can take it back and have it refilled at a discounted price. Usually very close to the root beer stand is the kettle corn. Don’t worry you won’t have any problem finding it. Just take a deep sniff and follow your nose to the sweet smell of cooking kettle corn. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Bring something to sit on while watching the battle\, blankets or camp chairs work fine. Bring or be prepared to purchase water. There is little shade at Cascades Falls Park and you will want to stay hydrated. Wear\, and bring\, sunscreen and slip on your comfy walking shoes. If you have little ones\, or someone that is sensitive to loud noises\, consider bringing a set of ear plugs. The battle gets very loud. \n \nBonus Info\nThis is a FREE event. You can come and enjoy the Muster\, walk around\, see the battle and never have to spend a dime. Parking is run by the Boy Scouts and you will be directed into a spot that you will easily be able to get out of when you want to leave. During the Fort Frederick French and Indian War Muster\, French\, British\, and American Indian reenactors assemble for three days of 18th century living history demonstrations and battle reenactments. Period crafts and food vendor will also be available. Hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday\, and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Sunday. Park entrance fees apply. \n\nFort Frederick French and Indian War Muster\nVisitors will take a journey back in time to the 18th century as volunteer reenactors exhibit the life of the French\, British and American Indian cultures during the French and Indian War Muster. Fort Frederick was built in 1756 to defend the frontier against French and Indian raiding parties coming east from the French Fort Duquesne\, in what is now Pittsburgh. Fort Frederick is unique because of its strong stone wall\, large size\, and roomy barracks. Fort Frederick also saw service during the American Revolution as a prison for British soldiers. \nFor the next 131 years\, the fort and surrounding lands were farmed. During the Civil War\, Union troops were often stationed near the fort to guard the C & O Canal. In 1922\, the State of Maryland acquired the fort. During the Great Depression of the 1930s\, a company of the Civilian Conservation Corps restored the fort and began development of the state park. In 1975\, the park reconstructed two soldier’s barracks inside the fort. These barracks are open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on the weekends in the spring and fall. Vendors will offer foods and Native American arts and crafts. \n\nRendezvous at the Straits Powwow\nThe Annual Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow is really two events in one – part traditional Powwow and part French voyager re-enactment. The Tattoo that opens the weekend gathering will be on Friday at 7:00 pm on Ted Lane Field\, followed Saturday by the parade through town. Fife and drum corps from throughout all the New England states and from New York\, Delaware\, and Virginia are expected to participate in this year’s Westbrook Drum Corps Muster. \n\nWestbrook Drum Corps Muster\n\nWestbrook Drum Corps Muster\nOpening the Tattoo this year will be the Junior Colonials of Westbrook playing the National Anthem. The Tattoo’s opening ceremony follows with a ritual presentation and placement of historic flags by each corps around the perimeter of the field. Following the Junior Colonials\, the Junior Fife and Drum Corps of Deep River and Grand Republic of Southbury will play. \nThen the musical evening of fun and camaraderie accelerates with the start of a traditional fife and drum corps jam session. Everyone is invited to stay and participate in this event. The Westbrook Drum Corps Muster Tattoo takes place each year on Westbrook’s Ted Lane Field opposite the Town Green and abutting the public parking lot next to the Westbrook Firehouse on South Main Street. \nOn Saturday\, starting at 11:00 am\, the 50 fife and drum corps units will step off to march through town in a parade that will end at Ted Lane Field at the rear of the Riggio Building. The Westbrook Drum Corps Muster muster event will follow in which each corps will take the field in their turn to perform a series of musical selections. \nVendors will set up booths at the muster to sell items that would be of interest to members of the visiting drum corps units. \nWestbrook Drum Corps Muster Event Summary:Tattoo: The Tattoo will begin at 7pm featuring the annual Flag Ceremony (featuring members of various corps) followed by performances from several outstanding corps. \nParade/Muster: The parade begins at 11am\, followed by the on stand performances of over 40 corps. DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle of Dry Creek Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nThe 156th Anniversary Battle of Dry Creek Reenactment will be held on August 16-18\, 2019 at the Greenbrier State Forest off of Exit 175\, Interstate 64 near Caldwell\, West Virginia. A Tactical will be held on Saturday morning with Infantry\, Calvary and Artillery participating. Saturdays activities will also include a NCWAA Cannon Certification School\, Live Fire\, a Skirmish\, Military Ball/Concert and Night Firing of Canons. Camps will open to the public on Sunday at 10:00 am and will remain open through the battle. Sutlers will be on site selling reproduction and hand-made crafts\, period clothing and other unique items representing the Civil War. \n\nBattle of Dry Creek Reenactment\nLater that afternoon at 1:30 p.m.\, a “live fire” cannon target competition will take place. At 5:00 p.m.\, dinner will be provided for all pre-registered re-enactors\, followed by the Military Ball from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.\, so ladies bring your dresses. DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment\n\nRate This Event\n \nTravel back to 1855 during the Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment on August 10-11\, 2019 at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum in Tacoma\, Washington. The Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment is one of the largest museum events of the year as reenactors set up dozens of tents as they arrive at the Fort. The annual encampment recreates the bustle and excitement of the historic visit of fur traders to the Fort in 1855. Guests will witness the arrival of the brigade (the convoy that delivered a year’s worth of furs) and spirited contests between trappers and traders – from obstacle course races to cooking contests. \n\nFort Nisqually Brigade Encampment\nThe Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment includes two days of engaging activities on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. \nAdmission:\nAdult (18-64) – $15\nMilitary/Senior (65+) – $15\nYouth (4-17) – $10\nAges 3 & under Free \nAt noon each day\, you will witness the arrival of the fur trade brigade\, full of bravado and glad tidings. The Renfrew Museum and Park consists of 107 acres along the east branch of the Antietam Creek and includes beautifully restored buildings that date back to the 1790s when Daniel Royer purchased the land and built a tannery and gristmill. The reenactment has been held since 1980 and has been sponsored by the 139th PVI Co. F since the very beginning. \n\nRenfrew Pk Civil War Reenactment\nThe Renfrew Farm boasts farmland\, woodland\, and meadows and 50 acres of wilderness/wildlife preserve. Shaded camping for all military and civilians is located in a beautiful grotto area with a stream\, at the center of all thereenactment events. Participants are provided with fresh\, cold running water\, fire wood\, and modern bathroom facilities. \nLive a Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier\nThe Civil War Reenactment isn’t all cannons and gunpowder. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The Battle on Lexington Green will be fought each morning at 10:30 and the Battle of Concord on the Old North Bridge will be fought each afternoon at 2:30. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort. \n \nAbout Fort Union Trading Post\nFort Union Trading Post was constructed on the spacious plains in 1828\, near where the mighty Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers joined by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company. This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. There will be a variety of Revolutionary War activities and demonstrations throughout the day including a reenactment of the fight between Patriot and Loyalist militias held at 2:00 p.m. both days. There is a $5.00 fee for parking. \n\nHouse in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\nMusket and cannon firing drills\, tomahawk throwing\, Revolutionary War militia camps and a wreath-laying ceremony by the Sons of the American Revolution are among the many activities of the House in the Horseshoe Battle Re-Enactment. On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. The opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement was the result of a decisive victory over the Native Americans at the Battle of Bushy Run\, August 5th and 6th\, 1763. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit\, “The March to Bushy Run” at the site’s visitor center\, as well as guided and self-guided tours\, special events and educational programs. \nAbout The French and Indian War\nThe French and Indian War was a seven-year war in North America between England\, their American colonies\, and their Native American allies against the French and their Native American allies. When the war ended\, France was no longer in control of Canada and the Indians who had been threatening the American colonists were defeated. This war had become a world war. Great Britain spent a great deal of money in the conflict and colonists fully participated in this war. Afterwards\, you can either take a golf cart tour that loops around the battlefield or take your own self guided tour and walk in the footsteps the men who fought 250 years ago did. Sadly\, the first day’s battleground has become barren due to a farm being located on the site at one point. Edge Hill\, where the second day’s fighting occured is still preserved in the state it was during the battle. \nThere are numerous hiking trails that weave through the woods around Edge Hill (which provide an idea of what the 1st day’s battle ground was like). The site’s staff are very nice and informative and helped answer a lot of my questions. I will recommend doing a French and Indian War themed trip if you are visiting from out of the area\, as there are other sites relating to Bushy Run in the area. The roar of cannons will rebound across Lake Fanny Hooe when Civil War-era living-history group Battery D\, 1st Michigan Light Artillery\, pitches camp at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor in Michigan’s beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. Re-creating the volunteer artillery unit organized at White Pigeon in 1861\, the group will interpret army life of the period\, demonstrating artillery drills\, period cooking and soldiers’ pastimes. Celebrating its 30th anniversary at Fort Wilkins\, the encampment will feature more than 30 costumed interpreters\, tents\, a depiction of army barracks life\, and full-scale artillery pieces as well as authentically reproduced mess gear\, small arms and other period artifacts. \n\nFort Wilkins Civil War Encampment\nThe Fort Wilkins Civil War Encampment will feature more than 25 costumed interpreters\, a depiction of army barracks life\, medical and undertaking demonstrations\, drills\, skits and full-scale artillery pieces – including 10-pound Parrott rifles (cannons) – along with army tents and authentic reproductions of mess gear\, small arms and other period artifacts. \nDuring the Civil War encampment\, history truly comes alive at Fort Wilkins. Hearing the cannon boom across Lake Fanny Hooe is an unforgettable experience that really sets the stage for the weekend. Lots of other entertaining activities such as primitive fire starting and the frying pan throw are planned. \nThe Sierra Madre Muzzle Loading Rifle Club Rendezvous is a fun weekend for the whole family. There will be lots of old time kids games and crafts\, including a candy cannon going off several times daily and a treasure hunt for coins in the sawdust pile. We try to make this a safe and exciting event for everyone.
