The opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement was the result of a decisive victory over the Native Americans at the Battle of Bushy Run\, August 5th and 6th\, 1763. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit\, “The March to Bushy Run” at the site’s visitor center\, as well as guided and self-guided tours\, special events and educational programs. \nAbout The French and Indian War\nThe French and Indian War was a seven-year war in North America between England\, their American colonies\, and their Native American allies against the French and their Native American allies. When the war ended\, France was no longer in control of Canada and the Indians who had been threatening the American colonists were defeated. This war had become a world war. Great Britain spent a great deal of money in the conflict and colonists fully participated in this war. Visitors will first start at the visitor center\, which includes a small museum that details the events leading up to Pontiac’s Rebellion with the highlight of the museum being the 13 minute long documentary Road To Bushy Run. Afterwards\, you can either take a golf cart tour that loops around the battlefield or take your own self guided tour and walk in the footsteps the men who fought 250 years ago did. Sadly\, the first day’s battleground has become barren due to a farm being located on the site at one point. Edge Hill\, where the second day’s fighting occured is still preserved in the state it was during the battle. \nThere are numerous hiking trails that weave through the woods around Edge Hill (which provide an idea of what the 1st day’s battle ground was like). The site’s staff are very nice and informative and helped answer a lot of my questions. I will recommend doing a French and Indian War themed trip if you are visiting from out of the area\, as there are other sites relating to Bushy Run in the area. Rendezvous in the Sault is a living history event that will take place along Historic Water Street at the City Hall Grounds and at the Historic Homes. It is the very site where Fort De Repentigny was constructed to provide refuge for French voyageurs in 1750\, and where\, in 1822\, Colonel Hugh Brady arrived with Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and established Fort Brady. The roar of cannons will rebound across Lake Fanny Hooe when Civil War-era living-history group Battery D\, 1st Michigan Light Artillery\, pitches camp at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor in Michigan’s beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. Re-creating the volunteer artillery unit organized at White Pigeon in 1861\, the group will interpret army life of the period\, demonstrating artillery drills\, period cooking and soldiers’ pastimes. Celebrating its 30th anniversary at Fort Wilkins\, the encampment will feature more than 30 costumed interpreters\, tents\, a depiction of army barracks life\, and full-scale artillery pieces as well as authentically reproduced mess gear\, small arms and other period artifacts. \n\nFort Wilkins Civil War Encampment\nThe Fort Wilkins Civil War Encampment will feature more than 25 costumed interpreters\, a depiction of army barracks life\, medical and undertaking demonstrations\, drills\, skits and full-scale artillery pieces – including 10-pound Parrott rifles (cannons) – along with army tents and authentic reproductions of mess gear\, small arms and other period artifacts. \nDuring the Civil War encampment\, history truly comes alive at Fort Wilkins. Behind them stood the Marquis de Montcalm\, a general used to doing the impossible in Canada and the mountains of Italy. With woolen vestes packed away\, wearing the white coats of France\, each French soldier double-checked his stockpile of loaded muskets and hoped for a miracle to defend New France from a British onslaught. Sweat beading up on their brows\, they looked over tangled branches and a forest of mere stumps. With piercing eyes they looked over the top of the stacked logs and began to see blazing musket fire explode as the largest single day of battle yet in the history of North America began. \nThree days prior\, the largest military force ever assembled in North America embarked by bateaux down Lake George\, leaving the ruins of Fort William Henry to invade New France from the south. At Fort Carillon\, 3\,700 French soldiers\, Canadian milice\, and native warriors stood to defend French soil in the New World. Abercromby’s army of British and Provincial soldiers landed at the north end of Lake George\, after a long night packed into the fleet of bateaux. Sweeping through the La Chute valley\, Brigadier General Lord Augustus Howe and the advanced guard encountered a lost patrol of French soldiers. In the ensuing confusing battle Lord Howe was shot through the chest\, and killed on the spot. The death of this leader\, known as the darling of the army\, struck a blow to British morale and tactical command. \n \nIn spite of Lord Howe’s death\, British and Provincial soldiers dug in along the La Chute River and General Abercromby prepared to assault the Heights of Carillon. Abercromby’s intelligence led him to believe that the Marquis de Montcalm’s soldiers had prepared merely a defensive abatis\, which could easily be taken. Early in the morning of July 8th\, General Abercromby moved regulars\, provincials\, and rangers into position to attack the Heights of Carillon. By this plan\, three columns of British and provincial soldiers would attack three sides of the French lines in unison. Instead\, individual regiments rushed forward\, dissipating their immense numerical advantage. What was supposed to be a well-coordinated attack soon fell apart. The French kept up a consistent fire on the attacking force\, pinning many of the British soldiers down\, forcing them to hide behind stumps of trees and the bodies of their fallen comrades. David Perry\, a Massachusetts provincial soldier\, described his perilous situation that July day. \nIt happened that I got behind a white-oak stump\, which was so small that I had to lay on my side\, and stretch myself; the balls striking the ground within a hand’s breadth of me every moment\, and I could hear the men screaming\, and see them dying all around me. I lay there some time. A man could not stand erect\, without being hit\, any more than he could stand out in a shower\, without having drops of rain fall upon him; for the balls came by hands-full. \nBritish Defeat and Retreat\nThe outcome looked grim for the few attackers who made it to the abatis. Rushing over the bare no-mans-land\, they attempted to cut and force their way through the sharp entangled branches\, facing clouds of lead bullets. After seven hours of fighting\, the battlefield was littered with the dead and dying\, and with dusk encompassing the battlefield a disorganized retreat south ensued for the British and provincial soldiers. The retreating soldiers brought with them the story of this great battle\, taking the name Ticonderoga home to taverns and newspapers in America and Britain. \nThis fight for the Heights of Carillon at that time was the single most-bloody day in American history\, and gave Fort Carillon a formidable reputation. Having held the French Lines for one day\, French soldiers continued to dig in\, preparing for a second day’s attack. Their somber celebration for the day’s victory was a single cross raised high behind the French Lines. The Marquis de Montcalm ordered this cross raised as thanks for their miraculous victory\, even as they prayed for another such miracle. News of this miraculous victory reached France by the fall of that year. The Cass River Colonial Encampment is an 18th Century encampment of historical reenactors representing British\, French and American troops and militia of both the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War eras. \nAlong the banks of the Cass River and on the grounds of the River Place Shops in Frankenmuth\, hundreds will gather to reenact American’s war for independence at the Cass River Colonial Encampment. Each day about 11:00 a.m. there will be a mock battle between the redcoats and their Native American allies against the American colonials and their French allies. \n\nCass River Colonial Encampment\nThere is a quarter mile of beautiful Cass River frontage and sloping banks around the historic wooden covered bridge area which makes for perfect campsites for the Cass River Colonial Encampment. Against this ideal backdrop\, families can witness our national heritage up close and personal by stepping back in time to view four staged battles taking place Saturday and Sunday. Shop on Sutler Row\, play parlor games\, see military demonstrations. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. The Battle of Hubbardton\, the only Revolutionary War battle in Vermont\, is honored at this living history Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend. Five hundred encamped reenactors will portray the American and British soldiers who fought here on July 7\, 1777. The event includes activities for all ages. The annual event takes place event takes place on the weekend after July 4. Military tactical times are weather permitting. Schedule may be subject to change. Museum and museum shop hours are 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.. Food stand and sutler’s shopping row are open both days \n\nBattle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend\nVisitors to the Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend are invited to experience the sights and sounds of the Revolutionary War and colonial times. This battle was the first time that British troops under Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne met the resistance and bravery of Americans in battle. Experienced reenactors from up to 21 American Colonial units and14 British Crown units share their passion for history and authenticity to provide this special experience. \nThe Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend offers activities for all ages and interests. Reenactors portray American and British soldiers and their families. Visit the tent camps\, talk with reenactors\, watch the tactical and artillery demonstrations\, see camp life activities\, learn how to drill\, and take in guided camp and battlefield tours. Mistress Davenport opens her popular school and storytelling tent. Hands-on activities for children are offered near the museum. The museum is open both days\, and the museum shop has an excellent selection of books and other items relating to the American Revolution. Local groups provide a food stand both days. \nSaturday afternoon is a military tactical on the slope of Monument Hill\, weather permitting\, at 3:30 p.m. The Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Corps will present a short concert at 2:45 p.m. The Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend highlight is the Sunday battle\, also weather permitting\, with troops starting formations about 7:30 a.m. The extended tactical demonstration begins at 8:00 a.m.\, as muskets sound in the distance before the soldiers emerge over Monument Hill. During the early morning hours of July 7\, 1777\, British General John Burgoyne’s army met the resistance and bravery of Americans for the first time in the Battle of Hubbardton. A massive British invasion from Canada chased the Continental Army from Mount Independence south to Hubbardton. \nThe British strategy was to continue to New York and divide New England from the rest of the colonies. On a grassy hill\, the New Englanders made their stand. While the British held the field and technically won the battle\, their losses were so heavy that they gave up chasing the Americans to tend to their casualties. The Battle of Hubbardton marked the beginning of the end for Burgoyne and his great plan. On August 16 he suffered a stunning blow at the Battle of Bennington. General Horatio Gates\, their newly-appointed commander\, quickly sprung into action reorganizing\, resupplying\, and restoring the discipline of America’s northern defense. Gates put soldiers from New England\, New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania to work building earthworks all around the old Fort of Ticonderoga and constructing a navy to defend Lake Champlain. \n1776 was a year of rebuilding the Northern Army as part of building a new nation. While the Continental Congress discussed the finer points of declaring independence in Philadelphia\, the shattered remnants of the Continental Army which had come so close to capturing Quebec trickled back down to Fort Ticonderoga. Frost bitten\, starving\, and decimated by smallpox these soldiers began building up bulwarks and America’s first navy to defend their new nation. It was built in what is now Perrysburg\, Ohio\, on a bluff overlooking the Maumee River rapids. Ground was broken on February 2\, 1813 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison\, who wanted to fortify the region. The 19th-century North American fur trade\, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance\, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French\, British\, Dutch\, Spanish\, and Russians. Indeed\, in the early history of the United States\, capitalizing on this trade\, and removing the British stranglehold over it\, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s\, however\, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed. \nIn canoe-based fur trade areas\, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes\, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nWho were the Voyageurs?\nVoyageur is a French word\, meaning “traveler”. Voyageurs were French Canadians who engaged in the transporting of furs by canoe during the fur trade years. From the beginning of the fur trade in the 1680s until the late 1870s\, the voyageurs were the blue-collar workers of the Montreal fur trade. At their height in the 1810s\, they numbered as many as 3\,000 men. Hired from farms and villages of the St. Lawrence Valley\, most spoke French and generally could not read or write. These men agreed to work for a number of years in exchange for pay\, equipment\, clothing and “room and board.” Most voyageurs would start working when they were in their early twenties and continue working into their sixties. Sometimes being a voyageur was a family tradition.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nHard working and tough\, voyageurs provided the power to move the canoes forward\, paddling at a rate of 40-60 strokes per minute\, often 16-18 hours a day. They were also required to carry a minimum of 180 pounds on their backs\, as both trade goods and furs were placed into standard weight bundles of 90 pounds each\, and each voyageur was required to carry two bundles\, though some carried even more. Twelve beaver hides paid the wages for a common voyageur for the year.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout Fort Michilimackinac \nFort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French\, and later British\, fort and trading post at the Straits of Mackinac; it was built on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan in the United States. Built around 1715\, and abandoned in 1783\, it was located along the Straits\, which connected Lake Huron and Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes of North America. \nPresent-day Mackinaw City developed around the site of the fort\, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Fort Michilimackinac was relocated to the new Fort Mackinac (don’t get them confused) on Mackinac Island during the American Revolution\, with some of the buildings moved across the ice in the winter of 1780-1781. DESCRIPTION:2019 Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience early fur trade-era life at the 27th Annual Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous on June 29-30\, 2019 six miles south of Isle\, Minnesota. All re-enactors from the French & Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade are welcome. \n\nMille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\nSince 1993\, the Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous has been held in late June in a rolling field in the woods south of Mille Lacs Lake. The event produces a bloom of white canvas in the form of tents in the style of 200 years ago. The rendezvous has become a highly regarded living history event within Minnesota. It’s a regular destination for up to 150 living history participants living in a frontier city of 55 to 75 primitive camps\, and for many\, a yearly reunion. \nA big part of the experience is the camaraderie among the re-enactors\, known as voyageurs and buckskinners\, while the other is the passion of demonstrating skills and crafts of 200 years ago to kids of all ages. The fur trade era is well connected to the Mille Lacs area\, and there were multiple trading posts\, trails and portages present. And both Aitkin and Morrison Counties were named after fur traders. \nThe Rendezvous Camp is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.\, with a donation needed for entry by those over 10 years old. The location is six miles south of Isle or 16 miles north of Ogilvie on Hwy. 47\, then one mile west on Red Road. \nThe sights\, sounds and smells of 200 years ago come alive once again\, with the opportunity to bring home some Americana of the time that the participants make and sell. There will be food\, blacksmiths\, woodcarvers\, woodworkers\, ropemakers\, music\, a storyteller and surprises. It’s never known just who might show up. The event kicks off with a 21-gun national salute at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Impromptu skills demonstrations and music are ongoing throughout the event by many artisans and primitive campers. \nThis event has been presented each year since 1993 by the Mille Lacs Lake Historical society of Isle\, Minnesota. DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the annual Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment on June 29-30\, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville\, North Carolina. At the Fort Dobbs Militia Muster\, living history interpreters will recreate an 18th century militia muster during a free event at the Fort Dobbs Historic Site. The presentation on Saturday and Sunday will feature musket firing\, cooking and other parts of military camp life. Visitors will be invited to join the ranks and learn marching drills each afternoon. \n\nFort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment\nMilitary training was part of life for the citizen soldiers\, and the muster re-enactment will portray residents of “Fourth Creek Settlement\,” as Statesville then was known. All males ages 16-60 were required by law to serve in North Carolina’s militia during the French and Indian War. These civilians would gather at appointed times during the year to practice military drill and could be used to quickly form an army for defense at times of invasion. Historic interpreters representing the Rowan County militia will offer on-going displays of military camp life\, as well as featured musket and cannon firing demonstrations. \nFort Dobbs preserves and interprets the history of the fort and North Carolina’s role in the French and Indian War. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. SUMMARY:Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid
DESCRIPTION:2019 Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience Kentucky Frontier history at the 10th Annual Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment on June 22-23\, 2019 at Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg\, Kentucky. Daily hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with the Raids reenactments at 2:00 pm daily. The Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment is sponsored by the Friends of Fort Harrod and is the Park’s signature event each year and promises to be bigger and better than ever before! \n\nOld Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid\nMany reenactors and volunteers work hard to re-create the actual look and feel of a real Shawnee attack upon Fort Harrod which might have occurred in March 1777. It began a year long seige on the Fort during which many settlers would die violent deaths. The Shawnee killed or stole all of the settlers livestock and burn their crops. The year of 1777 became known as the “Year of Despair” and one can only imagine the terror and hardships the settlers in the Fort had to endure. But\, the Fort held\, attack after attack. Had it not\, there would have been no Harrods Town\, no Harrodsburg and no State of Kentucky. \nFort Harrod was never overrun. At one point they nearly ran out of gun powder which gave rise to the famous “Powder Run” by George Rogers Clark\, James Harrod and others to obtain the much needed powder. They were successful and the Fort was saved! \nIn addition to the Raids reenactment\, the Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment living history\, colonial music\, cannon fire and Native attacks on the fort. Colonial entertainers will perform all weekend. After the portrayal of this historic battle and what could have been here at Harrod’s Fort the public will be invited to the Native village to watch the adoption ceremonies for the women and children as they could have been carried out if Harrod had fallen.
