The guided tours will include the Star Fort and barracks built in the 1840s\, as well as the Spanish-American War Guard House. \nAbout Historic Fort Wayne\nHistoric Fort Wayne first opened in 1845 and served as an Army post for nearly 160 years. Over 14\,000 men and women mustered into service for the Union Army at this site in which 1\,480 did not return to Michigan buried in the battle field cemeteries in the South. Historic Fort Wayne is one of a handful of star forts left in the US. DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us at the 49th Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous on June 1-2\, 2019 at Fort De Chartres in Prairie du Rocher\, Illinois. The first weekend in June\, Fort de Chartres State Historic Site hosts the largest rendezvous in Illinois or the Midwest with over a thousand participants\, hundreds of encampments\, and thousands of visitors joining in on the festivities. Based on the traditional French fur trapper’s rendezvous where trappers and traders would meet at a predetermined location to trade furs for necessities\, these rendezvous were the highlight of the fur trapper’s year and now the Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous is the highlight of Fort de Chartres’s extensive calendar of historical events and activities. \n\nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\nThe Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous offers participants and visitors alike a glimpse into the period from 1740-1840\, a part of Illinois’ past when it was governed not only by France but by Great Britain and the United States as well. Costumed reenactors portray a variety of personas including colonial military units\, mountain men\, Native Americans\, settlers\, merchants\, and more. Historical demonstrations are located at various locations on the grounds and there are periodic demonstrations that include period music\, military drills\, and musket and cannon competitions. \n@ Fort de Chartres State Historic Site\, at 1350 IL Route 155\, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The event is open and free to general public with special event parking for this event just $5 a car. Donations welcomed. For more information contact the site at (618) 284-7230 or email lesamisdufortdechartres@gmail.com. \nThe two-day popular Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous features shooting competitions\, military drills\, dancing\, music\, food\, and traders of eighteenth-century-style goods. The boom of cannons\, the smell of campfires and a parade of colorful uniforms will transport visitors back to the 1700s. The Rendezvous features 18th century military units\, traditional craft demonstrations\, period music and dancing\, black powder shooting events and cannon firings – all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk\, buy hand-made crafts\, learn about French kitchen gardens\, and watch swordsmen duel\, taste delicious food and much more. \nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n[/fusion_gallery]\n \nAs Fort de Chartres is an Illinois Historic Preservation Agency site\, there is a wide variety of interpretive activities that can be found throughout the grounds. These activities run continuously throughout both days. In the Native Crafts area\, visitors can learn first hand the arts of bow and arrow making\, hide tanning\, basket weaving\, the use of native foods and herbs\, pottery\, the construction of wigwams\, and the history of how and why the fur trade became such an important frontier industry. There are also archery demonstrations and competitions. \nThe Colonial Area features demonstrations that include spinning\, dyeing\, the use of looms\, woodworking\, weaving\, quilting\, rope making\, coopering\, and blacksmiths. Located in the Fort buildings themselves are a French Patron (River Boatman\,) a French Marines quarters\, a Jesuit missionary in the Fort’s Chapel\, and the Piethman Museum. A French Colonial garden\, oxen\, and baked goods for sale from a working stone oven can be found near the demonstration areas. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country. Visitors can gain a lot of insight into the life styles of the fur trapping era by exploring the Primitive Camp. The reenactors are a friendly bunch and are happy to talk about the specifics of their camp and the personas they portray. DESCRIPTION:2019 Lehigh Valley Civil War Days\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience history at the 12th Annual Lehigh Valley Civil War Days on June 1-2\, 2019 at Whitehall Park in Whitehall\, Pennslyvania. The Lehigh Valley Civil War Days weekend will include a battle reenactment each day centering on the events during the early days of the war. This will include fighting in trenches that have been constructed for the event. Learn how the Civil War was fought in 1864 through battle reenactments\, discussions with Living Historians and tours of the trenches. Take time to stroll through the Military Camps\, talk with the reenactors from both sides\, and learn about a Soldier’s Life and activities during the war. \n\nLehigh Valley Civil War Days\nBetween Lehigh Valley Civil War Days battle reenactments\, walk down the Friends of Camp Geiger’s historical street\, featuring the U.S. Sanitary Commission\, children’s games\, parlor games for adults\, a children’s recruiting station and more. Children can simulate joining the war effort at a recruitment station\, where they will be given wooden rifles and taught how to load them and go through lineup. Children’s games include jacks and cups and Game of Graces\, where children use two rods to toss a hoop back and forth. This was a defining moment in the history of our state and nation. The First Siege of Fort Meigs was a pivotal fight that would help turn the tide of war and usher in a series of American victories that would secure the Ohio frontier. Learn about history\, join in on the games or browse at the various trade blankets. \nPre-1840 Logan Hills Rendezvous\nIn conjunction with the Logan Hills Festival you can experience a pre-1840 Fur Trade Era Rendezvous encampment with all the trimmings. Come see where Simon Kenton and Blue Jacket spent many years of their lives exploring and making their homes. The encampment includes Mountain Men\, Fur Traders and Native Americans in period dress. See what it was like to live back in the 1700s and early 1800s. \nRendezvous occurred each year when the fur traders\, the fur trade companies\, and the Native Americans (Indians) would meet to sell their furs\, get paid\, gather supplies for the next year\, as well as drink\, socialize and catch up with their friends before they started back to work. \nToday\, people all over the country reenact these rendezvous. Many are pre-1840 events that require all reenactors to dress and camp in the primitive style of the era depicted. For some\, it’s just “primitive” camping with period clothes of the type used during the Fur Trade Era of the 1840s. All shelters used are of the type used during these times as well. \nDuring a rendezvous\, there is always an air of friendliness and fun. People are relaxing\, eating\, doing period crafts or playing period games. They are always more than willing to share the history of what they are doing with other campers or visitors. DESCRIPTION:2019 Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the 24th Annual Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous on May 25-26\, 2019 at Rock River Park on the west side of Fort Koshkonong in Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin. Get a real taste of pioneer life at this authentic reenactment held in the “Fort”. The Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous is always held on Memorial Day Weekend. \nTake a step back in time at the Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous with the early pioneers of the 1800s\, as people reenact this historical time period. Stroll through the park and view demonstrations and exhibits of how tasks were accomplished. Demonstrations include black powder shooting and competition\, pioneer demonstrations\, interactive old-time chores\, birch bark canoe demonstration\, and blacksmithing. Sit back and relax on a horse-drawn wagon or sample fry bread\, root beer\, and kettle corn from our camp chefs. \n\nFort Koshkonong Rendezvous\nVisitors to the Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous will capture the lifestyle\, from clothing worn by the pioneers to their housing. Continue on to see the old “Fort”\, a replica for local militia units during the Black Hawk War of 1832. \nFort Atkinson’s real “fort” was built in 1832 during the Blackhawk War by General Henry Atkinson’s militia near the junction of the Bark and Rock rivers. At the time\, Wisconsin was still part of the Michigan Territory. A stockade replica of the original Fort Koshkonong stands in Rock River Park and is where much of the rendezvous action takes place. \nChildrens’ Pioneer Interactive Area\nThese areas offer hands-on experience (chores and games)\, like children would have experienced on the early American frontier. These children’s chores include carrying water\, sawing wood\, and even building a miniature log cabin. Throughout the Branch County Civil War Days weekend onlookers can observe civil war period craftsman at work\, as well as asking them questions about life in that era of national conflict. \n\nBranch County Civil War Days\nThe public is invited to attend and participate in a variety of festivities which will begin on Friday\, May 22 with the arrival of President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln at the Coldwater Depot and conclude on Sunday\, May 25. Peek into the lives of those who would have lived or traded along the waterways of the Midwest more than 250 years ago when the marshes were a source of valuable furs desired by merchant traders to take back to Europe. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park welcomes visitors into encampments of French Canadian voyageurs\, French and British militia\, civilians and settlers\, and Native Americans. Artisans will demonstrate some traditional crafts of those times. The nearly 100 costumed reenactors adhere to details of the time period in their costumes and camps\, according to Robertson\, and share that sense of history with visitors to the event. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park is a family friendly event with lots of fun and interactive activities for the kids. Visit the Children’s Trading Post to pick up a scavenger hunt list. This list is not items to collect\, but rather items to look for at the event. Talk to anybody in costume to get information on the list item you’re looking for and get them to sign the form. When leaving\, the child may bring the completed sheet back to the trading post to trade for an item. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. These will include a Rifle Frolic Shoot\, Tomahawk Throw and Knife Throw. As soon as we have the event schedule set\, we will provide it here and on our website. \n\nSpring Gathering at Caesars Creek Pioneer Village\nPublic Hours & Admission\nPublic Admission: $5 per person\nHours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday\nAall proceeds from the Pioneer Village events go to sustaining and maintaining the Pioneer Village and its buildings. \nParticipant Admission & Setup\nSetup Friday.\nEarly setup available on request.\nPre-registration is $15 per tent with up to four people ages 13 and older. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. On May 16\, 1771 when a group of rebellious backcountry farmers who called themselves “Regulators” met the loyalist militia of Governor William Tryon in open battle. “Fight for the Backcountry” will feature a recreation of the Battle of Alamance\, and will explore life in the backcountry in the early 1770s\, as the American colonies stood on the brink of revolution. \n\nBattle of Alamance Reenactment\nThe weekend program at the Battle of Alamance Reenactment will feature a battle reenactment\, military drills\, artillery and musket drills\, and an audience with Colonial Gov. William Tryon. There will be demonstrations from cooks\, tradespeople and a colonial era surgeon. The Sons of the American Revolution will share a Patriots Day Commemoration Ceremony. It pitted two groups of North Carolinians against each other. There were approximately 2\,000 backcountry farmers called Regulators and around 1\,000 militia troops (citizen soldiers) under the command of Royal Governor William Tryon involved in the two-hour battle. Having officers\, a battle plan\, and more weaponry (which included eight cannon)\, the royal governor and his men easily defeated the ill-prepared Regulators. Governor Tryon reported that nine of his men were killed and sixty-one wounded in the military engagement. Although undetermined\, the Regulator casualties would end up being much greater. It is possible that as many as 100 Regulators may have been killed. The Battle of Alamance officially ended the so-called Regulator movement that began in the 1760’s.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nUnfair taxation\, dishonest and corrupt government officials\, and the lack of representation were all serious concerns of the Regulators. In most cases\, government officials (sheriffs\, clerks of court\, registers of deeds\, etc.) attained their positions through appointments by men in power\, not by elections involving the citizenry of the colony. The Regulators sought a better regulation of these government officials and more control of their own affairs. Geographical\, social\, and economic factors all had effects on the Regulator movement. \nAlthough the Battle of Alamance was not the first official battle of the American Revolution\, it did provide some valuable insight for revolutionaries as discontent with British rule continued to increase. For the approximately 6\,000 Regulators who took the oath of allegiance to the Crown\, many of them remained loyal to England during the War for Independence. Some of the militia serving under Governor Tryon\, who gained valuable military experience at the battle\, would end up fighting against the British. DESCRIPTION:2019 Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the 47th Annual Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous on May 17-19\, 2019 on the Sheyenne River near Sheldon\, North Dakota. In May each year\, the Plainsmen Black Powder Club sponsor a “rendezvous” on private land Southwest of Kindred\, North Dakota. Participants\, sometimes called “buckskinners” come from the whole region\, including Canada to take part. The Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous is a family-friendly event\, offering a variety of shooting competitions. There’s a lot to see and do\, including competitions in hawk and knife throwing\, primitive archery\, games for children\, cooking contests\, homemade wine judging\, fire starting contests\, and many other activities. No generators in modern camp unless authorized by the booshway.* \nContact Information\nplainsmenblackpowderclub@gmail.com \nDuring the great fur trade era\, a rendezvous was the time all the trappers would get together to sell their furs and buy supplies from the “traders” who would bring supplies to the rendezvous site. At the rendezvous\, the men would renew old friendships and engage in various competitions to test their skills of every kind and character. There are black powder clubs in every state of the United States\, in Canada and even in Europe. There are several rendezvous held annually in our region\, including Bemidji\, Perham\, Detroit Lakes\, and Gary\, South Dakota. \nToday’s Rendezvous\nAt each rendezvous\, a “living history” or period encampment is set up and participants dress in period clothing and use period equipment. An area is also usually set aside for people to camp in modern tents or campers\, known as “tin tepees.” This allows people to participate who for a variety of reasons choose not to have a fur trade era (pre-1840s) period camp. There are events where only period correct camps are allowed on site. \nCompetition Events\nThe sponsoring club of any rendezvous runs many activities\, usually over a weekend. There are “national rendezvous” around the country that last a week or more. For example\, at the Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous\, we offer a variety of shooting competitions. There are also competitions in hawk and knife throwing\, primitive archery\, games for children\, cooking contests\, homemade wine judging\, fire starting contests\, and many other activities. \nAbout Plainsmen Black Powder Club\nThe Plainsmen Black Powder Club started in 1972 with a small group of men who had a passion for muzzle-loading guns and the ways of the past. We try to portray the ways of the mountain men. Some call it “living history”. Today\, the club is more family-oriented by dressing the parts of the past at rendezvous throughout the US. We dress anywhere from the 1750s to 1840s. At rendezvous we have shooting competitions\, trail walks\, tomahawk and knife throws\, women’s and children’s games. DESCRIPTION:2019 Raid at Martin’s Station Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nWatch the frontier come alive at the 19th Annual Raid at Martin’s Station reenactment on May 10-12\, 2019 at the Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing\, Virginia. Witness history come alive as hundreds of living historians re-enact life at Joseph Martins frontier fort. Watch as two cultures clash and the flames of war are once again ignited on Virginia’s frontier. Activities include tours of Cherokee Warrior and Colonial Militia camps\, frontier fort life\, and 18th century merchants and colonial traders selling their wares. Various seminars on 18th century topics will be conducted by world renowned historians and lecturers. Frontier battles between the natives and the settlers highlight the Raid at Martin’s Station reenactment at 1 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. War is imminent! \n\nMartin’s Station Reenactment\nThe Raid at Martin’s Station reenactment can be better described as an “on-going living history demonstration” rather than a “reenactment” by its usual definition. The station takes its name from Joseph Martin\, who led the expedition that identified that tract of land where they erected a stockaded fort\, some crude cabins\, and planted a corn crop. These efforts at settlement proved to be useless\, as an Indian attack occurred in the fall of 1769 and the station was abandoned. Joseph Martin would not be long absent from the station\, and in January 1775 returned to Powell’s Valley with a party of 16 or 18 men who built a more permanent station. Enjoy old-fashioned food\, live music and family fun. \nThe Past Passed Here Living History Mini Gallery\n\n \nAbout the Chippewa County Historical Society of Wisconsin\nThe Past Passed Here is brought to you by the Chippewa County Historical Society\, providing an educational and FUN experience for all to learn how people in the Chippewa Valley lived in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Started in 1969\, the Chippewa County Historical Society of Wisconsin is located in the original convent of Notre Dame Church. The convent was built in 1881. The four-story building has 49 rooms and five bathrooms. When the Chippewa County Historical Society took possession of the building in 1990\, the Sisters had not been living there for two years. The building required a lot of repair. While the Society is using the building rent-free\, it is responsible for the continued repairs and modifications. The Annual Fort Lupton Heritage Fair takes place on the first Saturday of May\, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Admission is only $5.00 per car for the fair. There may be additional charges for special fundraising activities. Each group is staffed with individuals that are most enthusiastic about their own special time and place and they’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that their persona\, clothing\, gear and equipment are as accurate as possible. \nWhat was it like to live at different times and places in the past. What kind of foods did they eat\, how did they make a living and what did they do for fun-and you won’t even need to know Latin to ask. \nDemonstrations of historical skills including swordsmanship\, blacksmithing\, weaving and carpentry\, brain-tannin\, etc.\, will take place through-out the day. Special large scale activities will take place at scheduled times at the lower common area. These special activities will include English Rennaissance era Morris Dancers\, Revolutionary War military drills and mock combat\, and Buffalo Soldier horse drills and mounted combat\, and 1890s baseball. \nTour the historic 1838 Fort Lupton at the Historic Park and learn about life in 1830s Colorado. While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Lancaster Lupton first came to the area with a military expedition in 1835. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. Come see his trade fort and walk through the inner plaza to visit the blacksmith and carpenter shops\, living quarters\, kitchen and food preparation rooms\, trade rooms\, cantina and storage room with historic artifacts.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout South Platte Valley Historic Park\nHistoric Fort Lupton (aka Fort Lancaster) and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park encompasses 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton\, Colorado. The land consists of a large natural and camping area immediately along the river and a high bench of land where the original Fort Lancaster was located.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAlong the river\, in groves of cottonwood trees are camping areas that can be used by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops with reservations. These camping areas are also used by the re-enactment department of the SPVHS – the Tallow River Trappers – to hold periodic rendezvous events. Immediately along the river are nature areas that are home to deer\, turkey\, foxes and other animals and birds. At the north end of the historic park is a muzzleloading shooting range leased by the Fort Lupton Muzzleloading Club. \nStart your tour of the historic park at the re-creation of Fort Lancaster\, which was in operation from 1836 to 1844. Move down the path and see the restored trapper cabin from the 1850s\, which was originally located down along the Platte River in Adams County. Moving further down the path\, your will see both the Independence School built in 1875 and the Donelson homestead house built in the 1860s.
