Blazing the trail presented extraordinary difficulties – the route through the wilderness was a hunter’s trace that was too narrow for a wagon.  The task was to combine many trails into one continuous route by clearing underbrush and overhanging foliage. There are live horses\, booming cannons\, and spectacular battle scenes. Experience a piece of American Civil War History at our “battlefield.” The Dollinger Farm Civil War Reenactment weekend is one that you won’t want you or your family to miss! Cancelled for 2019. \n\nDollinger Farm Civil War Reenactment\nOn the third full weekend (Saturday & Sunday) in October\, green farm grounds will fill with tents housing Confederate and Union soldiers. An Illinois pumpkin farm will become a Virginia creek on April 6\, 1865\, or some other famous Civil War Battle and Battlefield that determined the fate of our nation. As thousands of onlookers watch hundreds of reenactors armed with rifles and cannons portray carefully choreographed battles of the Civil War. \nPreparing for the Battle Reenactment\nBefore the Saturday afternoon battle commenced up the hill at the farm\, Union infantrymen prepare for what they know will be a long march to the battlefield and a tough battle. They pack up their ammunition pouches and fill their knapsacks with food and gear. As in the days of the real battle\, infantrymen never knew where they would end up following the battle\, so they carried everything with them\, including bedding. \n \nWhile they prepared themselves\, women and children lined the gravel path wearing period clothing\, waiting to cheer on the soldiers as they marched past. It was a tradition of the time to support the men and see them off. \nVisitors will want to arrive at least 1/2 hour early to walk up the hill to the Battlefield. The Battle scenes are the same on both days\, so choose whichever day fits your schedule. Tickets are required for the battle and are available online on the event site (see link at right). \nBattle Times\n2:00 p.m. – Saturday\n2:00 p.m. – Sunday\n* Allow at least 1/2 hour to walk up the hill to the Battlefield! Three forts were consecutively built between 1720 and 1755\, bearing witness to the French colonial empire established in the Mississippi basin during the XVIIIth century. Abandoned for many decades\, it was during the wave of historical site development in the first half of the XXth century that the state of Illinois partially rebuilt it to perpetuate the memory of the French presence in the region. \nAlthough it was constructed out of stone\, the new fort was not made to resist grand artillery fire; rather\, it was made to resist native sieges. In 1860\, Nathan Williams\, whose family would maintain ownership for the next 51 years\, purchased the property. By this time the barracks had disappeared\, due to time as well as scavengers looking for a ready supply of lumber and nails. \nWith the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861\, the area around Fort Frederick once again became important militarily. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal\, which passes one-quarter mile south of the fort (the railroad did not yet exist on this side of the river)\, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on the opposite (then Virginia) side of the river\, became focal points of defense for the Union Army. In December the 1st Maryland Infantry (U.S.) under the command of Colonel John Kenly\, was assigned to protect the canal and guard the fords and ferries of the Potomac River between Four Locks\, to the east\, and Cherry Run\, to the west. Company H of this regiment was ordered to occupy Fort Frederick. On Christmas Day\, 1861\, these troops fought a skirmish with Confederate Cavalry. The skirmish took place along the Potomac River below the fort and the Union troops guarding the river were successful in defending the canal\, but were not able to prevent Confederates from tearing up the railroad on the other side. On January 1\, 1862 another skirmish took place at the Fort\, as Union Troops again repulsed confederates attempting to tear up the railroad. \nFort Frederick continued to be occupied\, and in January 1862\, with the 1st Maryland being redistributed to guard points further west towards Hancock\, Company D replaced Company H here. These troops remained until the end of February\, when they\, along with others\, crossed the Potomac to guard the reconstruction of the B&O Railroad. Also during this period of time Union artillery was placed at the fort and was used against the Confederates in Virginia. \nThis is the last occurrence of the fort’s use by a military command. However\, the area around the fort remained vulnerable to Confederate Raiders through the rest of the war. Hence\, troops frequently passed near the fort and at times occupied grounds now encompassed by the state park. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. You can also visit the museum’s website using the link at the right. \nWhat is a Rendezvous?\nMountain Man Rendezvous were an annual gathering (1825–1840) at various locations held by a fur trading company at which trappers and mountain men sold their furs and hides and replenished their supplies. Rendezvous were known to be lively\, joyous places\, where all were allowed- free trappers\, Indians\, native trapper wives and children\, travelers and later on\, even tourists who would venture from even as far as Europe to observe the festivities. Rendezvous are still celebrated as gatherings of like-minded individuals or clubs in many walks of life. The fur trading rendezvous are celebrated by traditional black-powder rifle clubs all over the US and Canada. These gatherings range from small gatherings sponsored by local clubs to large gatherings like the Pacific Primitive Rendezvous and others. These gatherings include much of the same activities of the originals\, centering on the shooting of muzzle-loaded rifles\, trade guns and shotguns\, the throwing of knives and tomahawks and primitive archery\, as well as cooking\, dancing\, singing\, the telling of tall tales and of past rendezvous. Personas taken on by participants include trappers\, traders\, housewives\, Native Americans\, frontiersmen\, free-trappers and many others\, including soldiers. \nThese early frontier gatherings were called “rendezvous”\, French for a meeting at a particular place and time. It was the first major battle in the Kentucky Campaign. The battle took place on and around what is now the grounds of the Blue Grass Army Depot\, outside Richmond\, Kentucky. Confederates captured over 4\,300 Union troops. Total casualties were 5\,353 (206 killed\, 844 wounded\, and 4\,303 captured or missing) on the Union side\, 451 (78 killed\, 372 wounded\, and one missing) for the Confederates. Confederate units would control Kentuck until the Battle of Perryville in early October. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. Years earlier\, the Lewis and Clark expedition’s historic first meeting with American Indians was held on its bluff. \nLife at an 1820s military post is depicted at this Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September and other  Living History Weekends at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park that take place from May through September each year. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, volunteers will demonstrate period trades\, such as blacksmithing\, carpentry\, tinsmithing and coopering\, and crafts such as quilting\, spinning and weaving. Fife and Drum Corps gained increased popularity during the American bicentennial celebrations. In 18th-century military life\, fifes and drums served as one of the primary modes of battlefield communication and camp regulation. \n \nHistory of the Fort Ticonderoga Fife and Drum Corps Fort Ticonderoga formed its first Fife and Drum Corps in 1926 on the eve of the 150th anniversary celebrations of American Independence. The Corps performed at the Fort each summer until the beginning of World War II. When the World’s Fair came to New York City in 1939\, the Fife and Drum Corps was a featured performer on May 10th\, Fort Ticonderoga Day celebrating the 164th anniversary of the capture of the Fort by Ethan Allen\, Benedict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys. \nIn 1973\, in preparation for the bicentennial\, Fort Ticonderoga revived the Fife and Drum Corps to perform daily during the museum campus’ summer season.
