DESCRIPTION:2018 Hale at the Homestead Revolutionary War Encampment & Musical Muster\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the Hale at the annual Hale at the Homestead Revolutionary War Encampment & Musical Muster on July 28-29\, 2018 at the historic grounds of the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry\, Connecticut. Hosted by the Nathan Hale Ancient Fife & Drum Corps\, you will experience a Revolutionary War military encampment\, tactical demonstrations\, craft demonstrations\, children’s activities and the martial music of a dozen fife and drum corps groups on Sunday. \n[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qFZEa4WYME&width=650&height=400&[/embedyt] \nHale at the Homestead Revolutionary War Encampment & Musical Muster\nWalk through a colonial militia camp and experience the sights\, sounds and smells of colonial living. Reenactors will engage visitors in activities throughout the weekend. Kids will be invited to participate in colonial games\, visitors will have the chance to roll musket cartridges or dip candles. As you walk through camp\, the aroma of the campfire will fill the grounds as the camp followers cook over the fire. The sounds of the cannon and musket fire will echo through the town as there is a skirmish between the American soldiers and the British. Artificers will fill the colonial camp as they demonstrate their colonial skills and discuss camp life in the eighteenth century. \nSunday Fife & Drum Corps Muster\nBesides the military activity\, fife and drum corps from throughout the country will gather on the muster field Sunday at the Hale at the Hale at the Homestead Revolutionary War Encampment & Musical Muster to play their selected stand piece. On Sunday at noon\, join the Nathan Hale Ancient Fifes and Drums Corps and many other Fife and Drum Corps from across Southern New England for a Musical Muster and parade featuring an assortment of fifes (flutes) and wooden rope tension snare and bass drums. During Revolutionary War it became customary for each company of 100 or so men to be assigned two fifers and two drummers to sound signals\, hours and alarms\, as well as play popular music on the march. The Corps consists of four units: the Field Music; Knowlton’s Connecticut Rangers; Capt. Stephen Buckland’s Artillery; and the Company of Artificers. The musicians are attired in the regimental uniform of Col. Charles Webb’s 19th Connecticut Regiment of Foot in which unit Capt. Nathan Hale served in 1776. Their commitment to authenticity has resulted in their having won the coveted recognition from the Company of Military Historians. Several of the muskets carried by the Rangers are actual Brown Bess Tower Muskets\, not reproductions! \nAbout the Nathan Hale Homestead \nThe Nathan Hale Homestead is the birthplace of Connecticut’s State Hero\, Nathan Hale\, who was hanged as a spy during the Revolutionary War. The house\, built in 1776\, belonged to Nathan’s parents and family\, and is located on the only site he ever called home. Its furnishings include several Hale family possessions and other collections amassed by Connecticut lawyer and philanthropist George Dudley Seymour\, who purchased the Homestead in 1914 and began a program of restoration that is largely preserved today. DESCRIPTION:2018 Beginners Living History Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the Annual Beginners Living History Rendezvous on July 28-29\, 2018 at the Seven Eagles Historical Education Center in Grand Rapids\, Ohio. Seven Eagles Historical Education Center and Common Space Centers for Creativity (Toledo\, OH) are family members of the Arts Council Lake Erie West. \nEver browsed those history books and wondered how Native Americans and pioneers survived in the wilderness? Have you ever been to one of those festivals where reenactors portray life in the American colonies or in Native American settlements? Ever wondered how you could become one of them\, how you could find your persona and bring it back to life\, live the old way\, wear the clothes you have admired in books\, cook over an open fire\, sleep under the stars\, and of course\, share your love of history and be a constant presence at rendezvous – the only way to understand what the word means is by attending the Beginners Living History Rendezvous. This is the perfect opportunity to learn all this and much more: different Native American lodging styles\, cooking techniques and utensils in the Native American camp vs. pioneer camp\, Native American style beadwork\, hand sewing\, finger weaving\, basketry\, buckskinning\, flintknapping\, blacksmithing\, butter churning\, soap making\, entertainment and much\, much more. \n \nReenactors will be demonstrating all day in their camps set up on the property. Traders will have their trade blankets ready for you to buy the gear you need to start up reenacting history. Special events are scheduled at specific hours of the Beginners Living History Rendezvous: canoeing\, competitions in archery\, black powder shooting\, hawk and knife. Music (and how you can become a traditional guitar entertainer) will be provided by Jerry Eicher & Brenda Holdridge under the Drum Arbor. A special talk on the material culture of the Eastern Woodland Indians will be delivered in the longhouse by Seven Eagles executive director Martin Nagy. Lots of children activities\, so make sure you bring your kiddos (please have them under your constant supervision – this is an outdoor venue and we cannot take responsibility for accidents). \nThe buildings on the property will be open for visitors and a guided tour can be provided on request. Make sure you stop by and say hello to our innkeeper lady in Catfish Inn\, a replica of a 1700s Scottish tavern\, to the pioneer couple living in the back of the woods in a 217 years old log house\, to the trappers in the Trappers Lodge… All reenactors are education-oriented\, seasoned campers\, with many\, many years of experience – some of them started as young as 16\, and their mission is to help you learn all the skills you need to survive and become one of the key-persons in keeping history alive. We are always looking for young people interested in history and living off the grid; if you are one of them\, this is the place for you. If you are older…. DESCRIPTION:2018 Fort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence: 1777 Battle Re-enactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience Fort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence: 1777 Battle Reenactment on July 20-22\, 2018 for a three-day battle re-enactment highlighting the climactic summer of 1777 as its American garrison was outflanked by a British invasion force descending from Canada. Highlighted programming featured throughout the weekend brings to life the surprising American retreat and British capture of Fort Ticonderoga in early July 1777. Experience the fog of war and smoky haze of battle as the American and British armies maneuver across this historic landscape. This two-day battle re-enactment will dramatically show how General Arthur St. Clair decided to evacuate Ticonderoga set the stage for British General John Burgoyne. \nFort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence takes place Saturday and Sunday\, 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Admission to this re-enactment event is included in a Fort Ticonderoga’s general admission ticket. \n \nA Defining Story Brought to Life: During the Fort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence reenactment\, visitors will witness the intensity of battle as American soldiers retreat back from their entrenched camp under the intense British drive to capture the fortifications. They will discover the diverse forces that comprised this campaign and meet with soldiers of the two armies including the Royal Artillery\, the Rear Guard\, and the Continental Artillery. \nThis living history event and battle recreation will re-enact a careful chess game between the British Army and an entrenched Continental Army at Ticonderoga. Reprieved from a siege in 1776 by the onset of winter\, Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence faced General John Burgoyne’s northern army of British\, Loyalist\, and German soldiers in July 1777. DESCRIPTION:2018 Snowy Mountains Muzzleloaders Rendezvous\n\nRate This Event\n \nStep back in time at the 14th Annual Snowy Mountains Muzzleloaders Rendezvous on June 22-24\, 2018 at East Fork Reservoir\, 11 miles southeast of Lewistown\, Montana. The Snowy Mountain Muzzleloaders\, a Lewistown-based club that aims to carry on the lifestyle and traditions of the mountain men and women of the fur trading era sponsors the event. The annual Snowy Mountains Muzzleloaders Rendezvous features pistol and rifle gong shoots\, paper target shoots\, knife and tomahawk throwing\, fire starting and archery competitions. Fun shoots and games for kids of ALL ages are also held along with a cannon firing competition. \nParticipants are encouraged to dress in period clothing. A variety of demonstrations pertaining to the mountain man era are of special interest to the public as is Trader’s Row where vendors are welcome at no charge. \nSnowy Mountains Muzzleloaders Rendezvous activities begin Friday morning with the opening ceremony followed by a full day of competitive events and a potluck supper. Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. DESCRIPTION:2018 Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School\n\nRate This Event\n \nCivil War cannons roar at Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School on May 19-20\, 2018 at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown\, New York. Civil War soldiers garrison the Fort and fire cannons during the afternoon at the Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School. The event is sponsored by Reynolds Battery 1st New York Light Artillery. \nAlthough Fort Niagara was far from the action during the war\, it nonetheless saw activity during the conflict. Paroled Union soldiers captured near Mesilla\, N.M.\, arrived at the fort in December 1861 and remained there until October 1862. Later\, the fort’s walls were strengthened against a feared British attack from Canada in support of the Confederacy. The fort’s massive brick walls and sturdy underground casemates date from this period. \nThis Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School training weekend\, whether you wear blue or gray the school is dedicated to one simple goal: the training of reenactors in the safe portrayal of their branch. To a lesser degree\, it is the hope that\, in brotherhood\, we can continue to strive to make this hobby enjoyable and accurate to ourselves\, our comrades\, and the public. Except for general formations for colors\, award presentations\, and guest speakers\, the Fort will be garrisoned\, scheduled\, administered\, and certified by staff from their own school. Reynolds’ Battery L\, 1st New York Light Artillery is chartered by the New York State Board of Education with the stated purpose and objectives to inform\, instruct and educate the public\nas to the life and trials of a Civil War Artillery soldier during the 1860s. In recognition of the training provided by the Battery to its members and the Reenactment community the 2012 George MacDonald Award for Outstanding Service was presented to Richard Henderson and John Beatty with Reynolds Battery. \nHistory of Reynolds’ Battery 1861 to 1865\nAfter the disaster at Bull Run\, President Lincoln put out a call for 300\,000 more men for service. The Rochester Union Grays\, a New York Militia regiment at the time\, answered the call. Recruiting was done by John A. Reynolds\, Edwin Loder and Charles Anderson\, and men from Monroe\, Ontario and Wayne counties flocked to the recruiting offices to join the artillery regiment. \nOn October 8\, 1861\, 81 men and officers swore an oath to the Union and were mustered into federal service while stationed in Elmira\, NY. Under the direction of the State of New York\, twelve artillery companies were formed with Reynolds’ Battery given the designation of Company L. They transferred to Albany on November 14\, the training ground for all NY State Artillery\, having reached full strength of 115 men. On November 23\, 1861 Company L reported for duty at Camp Barry\, Washington\, D.C. under the command of Captain John A. Reynolds. John Reynolds used his own personal funds as a guarantee to secured the first six Model 1861 3” Ordnance Rifles from the Phoenix Iron Works. These guns would not arrive until May 1862\, but would bring a great deal of fame for Reynolds’ Battery as being the only battery in US Service to have the first six consecutive guns in any series of any cannon in their battery. On February 23\, 1862\, Reynolds’ Battery was assigned to Baltimore\, Maryland to guard the Capital. After six months of waiting\, they were called into action at Harper’s Ferry. \nAbout Old Fort Niagara\nOld Fort Niagara has dominated the entrance to the Niagara River since 1726. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. DESCRIPTION:2018 Morgans Victory March Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the annual Morgans Victory March Reenactment on January 13-14\, 2018\, taking the route of Daniel Morgan and his Flying Army on a two-day 25 mile walk that will begin at Grindal Shoals\, near Pacolet\, and end at the Cowpens National Battlefield. The reenactment takes place on the weekend in January that is closest to the original date of January 15-16\, 1781. \nOn the March we relive Morgan’s activities during the two-day race with the enemy while also planning how to use his soldiers to win a great victory at a place called the Cowpens. Hikers and bikers (non-motorized) may go the entire route or choose only the segments that interest them. Horseback riders are welcome to participate as horses add to the excitement along the route. Reenactors and historians will describe what was happening at that time over 200 years ago as the militia units were mustering and moving to help Morgan’s Continentals defend their homeland against British invaders. \nTwo Day March: The first leg of the march is about 13 and one half miles. The Sunday portion\, ending at the Cowpens National Battlefield\, is about 11 and one half miles. \nRegistration is required: Marchers should pre-register with the Town of Pacolet (864-474-950) or email eharris@townofpacolet.com. Marchers will be asked to sign a waiver of liability for the sponsors and landowners located along the route. There is no charge for marcher but donations will be accepted. \nTransportation: It is not necessary that you walk the entire distance. There will be horse drawn wagons and carriages for those that prefer not to walk. \nMarchers should wear warm clothes suitable for the weather and bring their own snacks. The marchers will see the beautiful country from Grindal Shoals to Cowpens National Battlefield. The Morgans Victory March is a great way to get an idea how the weather\, natural conditions\, and distance helped shape how the Victory of Cowpens turned out! \nOn this weekend tour\, we will march along the same route at about the same pace that Morgan used as he moved his army on January 15th and 16th in 1781. Morgan and his army had arrived at Grindal Shoals on Christmas Day\, about three weeks before. On the night of Jan. 14\, Morgan had received word that Tarleton and his army were coming after him. The next morning\, on Jan. 15\, Morgan had started his army on the march in an effort to get away from the British. His army marched up the Green River Road. Today\, some of that road is known as the Asbury Highway or Hwy 211. His army entered the Asbury Highway portion just beside where Wagstop Plantation is located today. After a few miles\, they turned right on the part of the Green River Road that is known today as “Goucher School Road”. This is just before where Knuckles Chapel Church is located today. \nJust one day behind them\, the British army marched up the Quarter Round Road until they too came into the Green River Road at an intersection near to the present location of Knuckles Chapel. Now\, both armies were on the same road to their deadly meeting at Cowpens. \nEnding Location Cowpens National Battlefield 338 New Pleasant Road Gaffney\, SC 29341 (864) 461-2828 \nThe Battle of Cowpens was a very important American victory against overwhelming odds. The Battleground is about 9 miles northwest of Cowpens. The American General Daniel Morgan did all he could do to get away from the British army under Tarleton. As we have seen at Easterwood and Grindal Shoals\, the British army was just moving too fast for Morgan to get away. Morgan realized that Tarleton was going to catch him. He decided to stop and fight him at a place of his own choosing rather than to let Tarleton catch his army as it was crossing the Broad River only five miles away. \nMorgan planned a brilliant strategy for the battle that is still studied in Military Schools to this day. The battle was fought in the early morning on January 17\, 1781 and barely lasted an hour. It was a complete Patriot victory over the British army. The Patriot forces under General Morgan crushed and destroyed the British army. None were more important than the Buncombe Turnpike built in 1828 that ran through the mountains at Warm Springs\, North Carolina. This area would see many conflicts throughout the war\, with both sides trying to gain control of the area. \nThe Civil War in Madison County\, North Carolina\nBecause Madison County was a “border county” in a “border state” during the Civil War\, there are many examples of communities as well as families divided in their allegiances. There were no major battles in Madison County although both armies moved through the area and Madison County furnished troops for both sides. A few skirmishes were fought within the County: one at Cuffey Field on Spring Creek and a second on the hotel grounds at Warm Springs (the former name of the town of Hot Springs). The two-day event brings together history enthusiasts and curious spectators to raise money and awareness of the fort’s history. \nLa Salle and his men built the original fort in 1680 while constructing a boat to travel the Mississippi River. According to historians\, the fort was burned down. The exact location of the original fort has been the subject of great debate since Peoria was founded. A reconstructed fort now commemorates Illinois’ first European-built structure. \nTwice a year in spring and fall\, the not-for-profit Fort Crevecoeur\, Inc. holds Rendezvous Days as a main fundraiser to maintain the fort and surrounding park. DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the excitement at the The Fort Osage Dispatch Canoe & Kayak Race on August 26\, 2017 beginning at LaBenite Park\, Sugar Creek\, Missouri. The Fort Osage Dispatch Canoe & Kayak Race (called “The Dispatch”) is held annually to honor the original occupants of Fort Osage\, who routinely sent messengers down river in canoes to deliver dispatches to St. Louis. \n“The Dispatch” is a sixteen mile canoe and kayak race on the historic Missouri River! The race will start at LaBenite Park\, in Sugar Creek\, Missouri. The race will finish at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark. \nOfficial Fort Dispatches will be given to all racers at registration.\nThese dispatches will be copies of actual historical documents and letters\, pulled from the archives at Fort Osage\, which had actually been sent from Fort Osage to St Louis. \nA Fort Osage soldier re-enactor will be present at the finish line\, and every racer (both adults and children) must deliver their “dispatch” to the soldier in order to complete the race and receive their finishers coin… which is an official replica of the Jefferson Peace Medal. \nContest for most realistic boat which would been seen at Fort Osage during the early 1800s. \n$35 Racing fee (Day of Event Registration – $40/adults)\nEvery Adult racer will receive a finishers medal\, tee-shirt\, lunch\, and 3 tickets for admission into Fort Osage. \nChildren’s racing fee is $10 but does not include a tee-shirt\n(Each child will receive a finishers coin\, lunch\, and one admission into Fort Osage) \nMilitia Re-enactors from the Friends of Fort Osage will be present in full military dress!! DESCRIPTION:The Annual Fort Crevecoeur French and Indian War Reenactment will be held on August 5-6\, 2017 at Fort Crevecoeur in Creve Couer\, Illinois. Gates are open to the public Saturday and Sunday 9a – 5p. A small gate fee applies. All proceeds from the gate go towards the upkeep of Fort Crevecoeur Park. \nFrench and Indian War re-enactors portraying French\, British and Iroquois soldiers will provide demonstrations of camp life and skirmishes in the fort. \nThroughout the Fort Crevecoeur French and Indian War Reenactment\, vendors will sell food\, including buffalo burgers and homemade root beer\, and period items.
