Followed by Memorial Service that starts in chapel\, then a pocession to the Fannin Monument for the conclusion of the memorial service. \nAbout the Goliad Massacre\nAround 6:00 a.m. on Palm Sunday\, March 27\, 1836\, after being held captive for one week\, Colonel Fannin’s men were told to gather up their things. They thought that they were going to the Port of Copano and then on to New Orleans. They were happy and singing. They knew that Colonel Fannin had returned from the Port of Copano the previous day. What they didn’t know was that at 7:00 p.m. the pervious evening\, Colonel Portilla had received word directly from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to execute the men. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. Over 300 Revolutionary War reenactors from across the country will muster for the Battle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment and the scheduled events take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day. Major General Nathanael Greene\, defending the ground at Guilford Courthouse with an army of almost 4\,500 American militia and Continentals\, was tactically defeated by a smaller British army of about 1\,900 veteran regulars and German allies commanded by Lord Charles Cornwallis. After 2-1/2 hours of intense and often brutal fighting\, Cornwallis forced his opponent to withdraw from the field. Greene’s retreat preserved the strength of his army\, but Cornwallis’s frail victory was won at the cost of over 25% of his army. \nGuilford Courthouse proved to be the highwater mark of British military operations in the Revolutionary War. Weakened in his campaign against Greene\, Cornwallis abandoned the Carolinas hoping for success in Virginia. Fort de la Présentation was one of a handful of French colonial forts in New York State. On Saturday afternoon\, the Battle of Ogdensburg Reenactment will take place along the streets\, following a similar route of the Anglo-Canadian army in 1813 as it fought toward the fort on Lighthouse Point. \n\nBattle of Ogdensburg Reenactment\nWatch as the British once again charge down the streets of Ogdensburg as militia and regular soldiers commanded by Major Benjamin Forsyth stage their last and ultimately failed attempt to repel the redcoats from the city. \nWearing full winter gear and braving the bitter cold\, the 7/60th will participate in the annual Battle of Ogdensburg Reenactment event by fighting on the same ground contested two centuries ago. For two nights the group will be quartered in the barracks at Fort Wellington National Historic Site in Prescott\, Ontario\, and will cross the St. Lawrence River (albeit by car and bridge) during the days to participate in the battles. \nThe first battle reenactment will be held in the streets of downtown Ogdensburg with a special emphasis on the last stand of St. Lawrence County Sheriff Joseph York\, a member of the local militia who attempted to single-handedly repel the British at the intersection of State and Ford streets. When the British spotted Mr. York alone in the streets\, their officers commanded the soldiers not to fire. Regarding him as “too brave to kill\,” the British captured him instead. The rest of the militia was either killed\, captured or melted back into the community. \nOn Sunday the action will move to Lighthouse Point\, where a fierce battle was fought that forced troops commanded by Major Forsyth to retreat to Sackets Harbor. An opportunity to purchase period merchandise & refreshments is available to our park visitors. \nAbout Fort Foster\nFort Foster State Historic Site is a reproduction of a fort originally built on the same grounds in December 1836\, by Col. William S. Foster and his 430 men. During the Second Seminole War the purpose of Fort Foster was to defend the bridge crossing at the Hillsborough River and act as a resupply point for the soldiers in the field. The Fort Foster was garrisoned on and off from December\, 1836 – April\, 1838. Although the fort was attacked on several occasions\, the worst attack occurred in February 1836\, when a small group of Seminoles attempted to set fire to the bridge. The attempt was thwarted by aggressive musket and cannon fire from the fifty or so U.S. Navy sailors and the 20 artillery men within the fort. Today\, park staff and reenactors provide living history demonstrations of life at Fort Foster. This was literally when there were American colonies\, later becoming states. The Colonial Market Fair would then by that same definition be an 18th Century Market Fair. The early market fairs in the first settlements\, such as Jamestown and Williamsburg\, were allowed and regulated by law. The Williamsburg digital library has a lengthy article written in 1955\,\nEighteenth Century Fairs by Mary R. M. Goodwin that represents a collection of these early laws\, showing the transition of the earliest fairs to more and less regulated fairs\, that could be said are the colonial\, eastern version of what would become the Rocky Mountain fur trade and western redezvous between 1823 and 1840. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read more”]\nThe colonial fair was first and foremost a market “for the sale and vending of all manner of cattle\, victuals\, provisions\, goods\, wares\, and merchandizes.” Prizes\, “or bounties\,” were sometimes offered for the best stock and poultry. The fair was also a place where men met to make and pay debts. Land\, houses\, storehouses\, and personal property were offered for sale at fairs – privately and by public auction. Occasionally\, a lottery was drawn at a fair. \nA controlling idea regarding the earliest 18th century market fairs seems to be to maintain the control that England had on the flow and taxing of manufactured goods into America. Ultimately this would fail as America was too large and growing larger. Colonial boycotts of these finished English controlled goods (even tea which though not made in England was controlled by them) led to the development of early American manufacturing efforts. The Second Seminole War was the setting for the Dade Massacre. In response to the U.S. government’s effort to move their people to a reservation\, 180 Seminole warriors ambushed a column of 110 marching U.S. Army troops led by Major Francis Langhorne Dade on the morning of December 28\, 1835. Only three U.S. soldiers survived\, while only three Seminole warriors were killed. As part of the tradition\, the residents provide refreshments for the singers at each stop. La Guiannee at Fort de Chartres cosponsored by the Fort\, Les Amis\, and the Prairie du Rocher La Guiannee Society. The event is open and free to the general public. \nAround 7 PM each New Year’s Eve members of the La Guiannee Society begin to assemble in preparation for visiting local homes and businesses. The tradition of la guiannee was brought to Prairie du Rocher by the French who settled the area in the early 1700’s. Prairie du Rocher is the one of the only North American French Colonial settlements that have continuously carried on the tradition of la guiannee. \nUpon arrival at a local home or business the group sings two verses outside\, and then when invited in by the homeowner or business person the entire song is sung. After the singing has finished it is local custom that food and drink are offered to the singers. The group then proceeds on to the next stop. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \n \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. It was here on August 16\, 1780\, that Revolutionary War hero\, Johannes Baron de Kalb\, was mortally wounded. A monument marks the spot where he fell\, wounded in battle. De Kalb is currently buried beneath a monument on the grounds of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Bethlehem Pike\nFort Washington\, PA 19034 \nAbout Hope Lodge\nHope Lodge was built between 1743 and 1748 by Samuel Morris\, a prosperous Quaker entrepreneur. Morris acted as a farmer\, ship owner\, miller\, iron-master\, shop-owner\, and owner of the mill now known as Mather Mill. Hope Lodge is an excellent example of early Georgian architecture\, and it is possible that Edmund Woolley\, architect of Independence Hall\, offered advice in building. Samuel Morris owned the estate until his death in 1770\, when it was inherited by his brother Joshua.
