The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \n \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. It was here on August 16\, 1780\, that Revolutionary War hero\, Johannes Baron de Kalb\, was mortally wounded. A monument marks the spot where he fell\, wounded in battle. De Kalb is currently buried beneath a monument on the grounds of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Bethlehem Pike\nFort Washington\, PA 19034 \nAbout Hope Lodge\nHope Lodge was built between 1743 and 1748 by Samuel Morris\, a prosperous Quaker entrepreneur. Morris acted as a farmer\, ship owner\, miller\, iron-master\, shop-owner\, and owner of the mill now known as Mather Mill. Hope Lodge is an excellent example of early Georgian architecture\, and it is possible that Edmund Woolley\, architect of Independence Hall\, offered advice in building. Samuel Morris owned the estate until his death in 1770\, when it was inherited by his brother Joshua. Gates open at 10 am both days\, with the battles taking place on Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 2pm as history comes alive in Andersonville\, Georgia. The Andersonville Historic Fair takes place on the first full weekend each October\, \n\nAndersonville Historic Fair\nSutlers selling Civil War uniforms and accouterments\, guns\, swords\, flags and Civil War era civilian clothing add color and interest as do craftsmen such as gunsmiths\, blacksmiths\, basket makers\, quilters\, weavers\, and artists of all kinds. \nVisitors from all walks of life came to Andersonville last weekend to enjoy a parade\, sample the wares of the many food vendors\, and take a trip back to a time when the nation was on the brink of being torn asunder by a brutal war. The first big activity is the parade on the main street on Saturday at 11 am. The Saturday parade\, an annual favorite\, includes a marching band and a wide variety of participants and entertainmen\, and features marching soldiers wearing the colors of both the Union and Confederate armies of the civil war. Special entertainment include performances by The Southern Gunslingers\, puppet shows\, line dancing\, clogging\, bluegrass\, jazz and country band performances\, and gospel singing. \nWar reenactors will mingle with visitors\, clad in period-accurate garb to accentuate the many historic attractions available to festival goers\, including a working blacksmith shop\, a variety of antique and collectibles stores\, arts and crafts vendors\, reproductions of buildings from the 1860s and\, of course\, the Civil War battle reenactments. \nThere is a lot to do at the Andersonville Historic Fair and Civil War Reenactment and in the Anderson Historic Village. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. They would buy and trade for all the materials to get them through the next years trapping season. Trader’s from throughout the western US setup to offer their wares. Knives\, tomahawks\, guns\, clothing\, camping gear and much more can be purchased at the rendezvous.
