This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The local tribe’s powwow also goes on at the same time. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grand Portage Rendezvous Days at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center in Grand Portage\, Minnesota. \nTags: Grand Portage Rendezvous Days\, Grand Portage Rendezvous\, Grand Portage Voyageur Rendezvous\, Minnesota Rendezvous\, Minnesota Voyageur Rendezvous \nView Other Minnesota Rendezvous

The Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment is one of the largest museum events of the year as reenactors set up dozens of tents as they arrive at the Fort. The annual encampment recreates the bustle and excitement of the historic visit of fur traders to the Fort in 1855. Guests will witness the arrival of the brigade (the convoy that delivered a year’s worth of furs) and spirited contests between trappers and traders – from obstacle course races to cooking contests. \n\nFort Nisqually Brigade Encampment\nThe Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment includes two days of engaging activities on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. \nAdmission:\nAdult (18-64) – $15\nMilitary/Senior (65+) – $15\nYouth (4-17) – $10\nAges 3 & under Free \nAt noon each day\, you will witness the arrival of the fur trade brigade\, full of bravado and glad tidings. In the early afternoon\, there is a spirited contest as reenactors run through an “obstacle course” of 19th century skills such as fire starting and splitting shingles. \nDuring both days of the Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment\, families can participate in “Engagé for the Day\,” visiting with reenactors at their tents and receiving hands-on lessons in period skills such as sewing\, blacksmithing\, spinning\, and powder horn making. A highlight for children is the Punch and Judy puppet show\, which takes place twice daily\, at 12:30 and 3:00. \nPunch and Judy Puppet Show\nThis fun and educational event is rooted in history. Once each year\, the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) collected all its furs from the region in one place\, usually Fort Vancouver. In 1855\, HBC traders were instructed to bring their goods to Fort Nisqually instead. Before returning to their respective posts\, the traders rested their horses and entertained each other with contests\, dancing\, and puppet shows. \nFort Nisqually Brigade Encampment Mini Gallery\n\n \nLocation\nFort Nisqually Living History Museum\n5400 N. Guests experience life in Washington Territory during the 1850s. Nine buildings are open to the public\, including the Granary and the Factors House\, both National Historic Landmarks\, and a Visitor Center with Museum Store. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum in Tacoma\, Washington. \n \nTags: Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment\, Fort Nisqually Encampment\, Ft Nisqually Brigade Encampment \nView other Living History Events

With the wealth of local history in Western South Dakota and the release of Hollywood’s take on Glass with Alejandro Iñárritu’s critically acclaimed The Revenant starring Leonardo Dicaprio there’s no better time to take a trip into the past. \n\nHugh Glass Rendezvous\nThe Hugh Glass Rendezvous commemorates the legendary fur trapper and frontiersman’s story. Hugh Glass led a storied life at the beginnings of the 19th century. In the summer of 1823\, Glass as part of a fur trading party led by General Ashley\, was attacked by a grizzly bear along the shores of the Grand River at a point somewhere south of present day Lemmon SD. He fought the grizzly to the death\, eventually killing the animal. Badly wounded Glass was left in the care of fellow expedition members John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger till he either recovered or died while the expedition would move on. Though accounts vary on the specifics\, Fitzgerald and Bridger abandoned Glass\, either because they believed he was fatally wounded or because they were attacked by a Native American tribe and had to leave to escape. \nHugh Glass did not die that day however. Alone\, removed of all his gear and supplies\, Glass would make an astounding journey. Overcoming his wound\, lack of equipment\, nature and evading sometimes hostile Native Americans\, Glass crawled most of the way back to Fort Kiowa\, more than 200 miles away. \nHugh Glass Rendezvous Schedule (subject to change)\nThursday · 8:00am – 5:30pm – Set-Up Rendezvous Camp at Hugh Glass Recreation Area – Shadehill\, SD | 6:30pm–8:30pm – Opening Ceremony & Reception at the Grand River Museum\, Lemmon\, SD | Special entertainment | Dessert bar featuring special selections\, beverages\, and more | Tickets $30/each (guests must present ticket for admission) Each ticket holder will receive a FREE Raffle Ticket which offers thousands of $$ of prizes! \nFriday · 9:00am – 6:00pm – Open viewing of Hugh Glass Exhibit at Grand River Museum\, Lemmon\, SD | 9:00am – 4:00pm – Hugh Glass Youth Day for students. Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. Andersen Visitor Center. \n[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afzZBn-N6Kk&width=650&height=400[/embedyt] \nFort Atkinson Living History Weekend\nIt operated the first school\, farm\, sawmill\, hospital and library in what decades later would be Nebraska. Years earlier\, the Lewis and Clark expedition’s historic first meeting with American Indians was held on its bluff. \nLife at an 1820s military post is depicted at this Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September and other  Living History Weekends at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park that take place from May through September each year. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, volunteers will demonstrate period trades\, such as blacksmithing\, carpentry\, tinsmithing and coopering\, and crafts such as quilting\, spinning and weaving. Members of the American Mountain Men group will have an encampment on the grounds\, portraying the fur trappers who helped settle the region. There will be a presentation at 1 p.m. on both days by Mark W. Kelly\, author of the book ““Lost Voices on the Missouri\, John Dougherty and the Indian Frontier.” \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September. \nTags: Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September\, Fort Atkinson \nView Other Nebraska Rendezvous\, Encampments & Related Fur Trade Events\nView Fort Atkinson Living History Events\nView other Living History Evens
