SUMMARY:Gathering at Macktown
DESCRIPTION:2019 Gathering at Macktown\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe Annual Gathering at Macktown on April 27-28\, 2019 at Macktown Living History Educational Center in Rockton\, Illinois lets you experience pre-1850s frontier life. Take a step back in time to experience American frontier life through the 1840’s. At the Gathering at Macktown\, you will meet traders and trappers\, French voyageurs and Native Americans. Enjoy food and mercantile vendors\, demonstrations and black powder shooting. This Gathering at Macktown takes place on the last full weekend of April each year. \nOn the early frontier\, a Gathering was a special time once a year when trappers\, traders\, settlers and Native Americans came together to trade\, share news\, have sporting contests and ofttimes even marry. More civilized than an early Rendezvous\, since it now included settler families\, it was a greatly anticipated event that could last for several days.\nIn this living history event\, the Gathering at Macktown\, visitors can feel themselves transported to a different time. Whether tasting homemade root beer or period foods\, visiting the Native American village and experiencing a woodlands lifestyle\, learning the proper way to throw a tomahawk\, or strolling through a historic site seemingly untouched by time\, they will experience the 1650-1850 eras of exploration\, trade and early settlement. \n \nVisitors can talk with voyageurs\, trappers\, Native Americans\, militiamen\, settlers and craftsmen who have gathered to trade news and goods. There will be black powder shooting demonstrations\, archery demonstrations\, canoe landings\, demonstrations of old-time crafts and skills\, bag pipes and Janesville Drum and Fife Corps will perform – and more!!\nTour original buildings on a national historic site\, Macktown Living History Educational Center\, and meet Stephen Mack as he shares his home with you. This living history presentation of American life from 1690 to 1850 is a family-friendly event with plenty of hands-on activities\, music and much more! \nSo\, why just read about history when you can experience it! Reenactors at the Annual Gathering at Macktown have studied the time period\, and love sharing what they have learned with camp visitors. The Gathering is expected attract about 100 reenactors roving in about the camp in period attire. \nThere will also be chances for guests to try out archery (times to be determined). Children will enjoy when the Candy Cannon is shot! (Shooting candy out of a cannon for children to gather.) There also will be a paddle dance\, comparable to the The Virginia Reel during the Civil War. \nAdmission\nAdults $7\nStudents $5\nChildren under 6 Free \nGathering at Macktown Mini-Gallery\n\nSaturday & Sunday\n9:00 a.m. – Voyageur Landing & Opening Ceremony \nEvent held rain or shine\nFree parking\nMore information\, call 815-624-4200. \nLocation\nMacktown Living History Center\n2221 Freeport Rd.\nRockton\, IL 61072\n(815) 624-4200 \nFor More Information\nCall (815) 624-4200; Email macktown1@frontier.com \nAbout Macktown\nThe Winnebago County Forest Preserve District\, which owns the land on which Macktown and the trading post once sat\, and the Macktown Living History Education Center are working to restore Macktown to its 1830 – 1846 historic condition. \nMacktown was founded in the mid-1830’s by Stephen Andrew Mack Jr.\, and his wife\, Mary Hononegah. In prosperous times\, Pekatonic boasted of the Mack’s two-story home and store\, a furniture store\, a school room\, a shoemaker’s shop\, a tavern\, a trading post\, fur trapper’s cabins\, and other homes belonging to the population of 200 to 300. A ferry and bridge traversed the Rock River. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Annual Gathering at Macktown at Macktown Living History Educational Center in Rockton\, Illinois. \nTags: Gathering at Macktown\, Indiana Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Indiana Rendezvous\, Indiana Voyageur Rendezvous\, Macktown Rendezvous \nView other Living History Events

Gates are open to the public Saturday and Sunday 9a – 5p. A small gate fee applies. All proceeds from the gate go towards the upkeep of Fort Crevecoeur Park. \nIf you wish to be a participant in this event and are new to our gathering family please feel free to contact us for details; we would love to have you join us. \nExperience frontier life from 1680 to 1850 at the Fort Crevecoeur Fall Rendezvous. The two-day event brings together history enthusiasts and curious spectators to raise money and awareness of the fort’s history. \nLa Salle and his men built the original fort in 1680 while constructing a boat to travel the Mississippi River. According to historians\, the fort was burned down. The exact location of the original fort has been the subject of great debate since Peoria was founded. A reconstructed fort now commemorates Illinois’ first European-built structure. \nTwice a year in spring and fall\, the not-for-profit Fort Crevecoeur\, Inc. holds Rendezvous Days as a main fundraiser to maintain the fort and surrounding park. But the primary goal of the event is to give people a taste of life in the old days\, Hanse said. \nMen and women dressed as traders and Native Americans sold items like arrowheads\, walking sticks and beaded jewelry. Tents and tepees dotted the park and participants demonstrated trades like old-fashioned rope making and knife crafting. \nLocation\nFort Crevecoeur Park\n301 Lawnridge Dr\,\nCreve Coeur\, IL 61610\nPhone:(309) 694-3193 \nContact\nFort Crevecoeur Park Office\n309-694-3193 \n \nAbout Fort Crevecoeur Park\nFort Crevecoeur Park is located near Peoria and includes a reconstructed Fort Crevecoeur (about nine miles from the original location)\, a museum and a campground. French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though. However\, the Fort Crevecoeur’s seven man garrison quit their fort\, destroyed the fortifications\, and made a trek to Canada. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Fort Crevecoeur Fall Rendezvous and Gathering at Fort Crevecoeur Park in Creve Couer\, Illinois. \nTags: Fort Crevecoeur Fall Rendezvous\, Fort Crevecoeur Fall Rendezvous & Gathering\, Fort Crevecoeur Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous\, Illinois Voyageur Rendezvous\, Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events\nView other Buckskinner Rendezvous
