The Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous is a celebration of life on the western frontier during the early 1840s\, patterned after the fur-trade rendezvous of that time. Many people spend a great deal of time\, effort and money to have suitable pre-1840 clothing and gear\, and travel many miles to enjoy the atmosphere of a “Living History” pre-1840 rendezvous. Please do not spoil it for them. \nThis year’s Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous to be at approximately 9\,300 feet\, so for those of you who have difficulty with altitude\, you might want to check online to see if there is anything you can do to be more comfortable before and when you get there. You will need to acclimate. \nRocky Mountain National Rendezvous welcomes everybody across the world and invites everyone to come and experience a primitive rendezvous in the Rocky Mountains. Come enjoy yourselves\, play\, laugh\, tell stories\, trade and re-create the history of the Fur Trade. We look forward to seeing all of our old friends and meeting new ones. \nColorado is hosting this year’s RMNR on the historic Historic Quarter Circle Circle Ranch\, in the Cochetopa Basin\, east of Gunnison\, Colorado. During their voyage of 1804 – 1806\, they led the “Corps of Northwestern Discovery” overland from St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River\, and back again. With no means for resupply\, the Corps – a U.S. Army unit of 31 men\, accompanied by Sacagawea and her infant child\, Jean Baptiste – needed to use a diverse combination of skills\, along with the right tools\, in order to survive. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove in July in Naselle\, Washington. \n \nTags: Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove\, Lewis and Clark Living History\, Knappton Cove Heritage Center\, Washington Living History\, Washington Rendezvous \nView other Washington Rendezvous & Other Related Living History Events\nView Other Living History Events

Join us to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. Over the course of the four days of the Green River Rendezvous\, vendors will fill parks with food\, live music\, beer\, entertainment and more to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. From visits to the Museum of the Mountain Man that bestows Jim Bridger’s rifle to the return of the “Green River Rendezvous” historical re-enactment and nightly rodeos\, cultural events will be in high supply. \n\nGreen River Rendezvous\nGreen River Rendezvous History\nSixteen Rendezvous were held during the years 1824-1840\, the height of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade when the beaver top hat was an essential part of every respectable urban man’s wardrobe. Of those 16 gatherings\, six were located at the Green River Rendezvous site\, eight miles west of Pinedale near Daniel\, Wyoming. It was at this site where famous mountain men like Jim Bridger\, Kit Carson\, Thomas Fitzpatrick carved their legends and opened the way for settlement of the West and supplied lustrous beaver pelts for the fashion industries of Europe and the eastern United States. Trappers\, travelers and Native American Indians all gathered to barter\, sell and gamble away the pelts and skins they’d gathered through the winter from hard\, dangerous labor. Guns\, jewelry\, supplies and other trade goods were also swapped. These original Rendezvous were the best opportunity to lay in supplies for the coming winter\, renew acquaintances\, tell tall tales\, drink\, laugh and get rowdy. \nGreen River Rendezvous Pageant\nSunday\, 1:00 pm at the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds\nThe live\, historical re-enactment has been a Pinedale area tradition since 1936 where community residents relive the original Green River Rendezvous of the 1800s. The rodeo grounds come alive with bearded\, buck skinned trappers and mountain men of long ago as they gallop\, holler\, fight\, boast\, and trade and barter goods. Representatives of coming civilization are also on the scene: Eliza Spaulding and Narcissa Whitman\, the first pioneer women to travel over South Pass\, stroll in once again. \nAmerican Mountain Man & Plains Indian Encampment\nThursday – Sunday at the Museum of the Mountain Man\nActivities\, tours\, and campfire talks on the historical significance of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade provides entertaining and educational Rendezvous events for all ages\, including free living history demonstrations of fur trapper and Plains Indian lifestyles\, field trips\, and children’s activities. \nPrairie of the Mass\nSunday\, 10:00 am at De Smet Monument\, Daniel\, Wyoming\nThe influence of Belgium-born Jesuit missionary\, Father De Smet is realized at morning’s calm to celebrate the first ever Mass on the prairie near the original Rendezvous site on July 5\, 1840 where thousands of Indians\, trappers and fur traders gathered. The De Smet Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28\, 1970. \nOriginal Green River Rendezvous Site\nTravel four miles north of Pinedale on US Highway 191\, turn left on Green River Road\, enter in at sign on right side of the road\, drive up a bit\, and walk on up. \nBy far\, the site of the 1833\, 1835\, 1836\, 1837\, 1839\, 1840 rendezvous is one of Pinedale’s most commanding scenes and was declared a U.S. National Historical Landmark in 1961. It’s no wonder six of the sixteen Rocky Mountain Rendezvous were located right here in the Upper Green River Valley where Horse Creek meets the Green. \nTrader’s Row\nLocated on the east end of Pine Street/US Highway 191. \n \nBuy and sell goods Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. It will have lots of rendezvous fun with activities such as the Candy Canon blasting throughout the day\, a bow shoot for all ages\, a frying pan toss\, and a “Tell a Tall Tale” contest. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Green River Rendezvous at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale\, Wyoming. \nTags: Green River Rendezvous\, Green River Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Wyoming Rendezvous\, Wyoming Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Wyoming Rendezvous

They need active members who care how the world sees Wyoming’s ancient landscape and early history. “We have a lot to do and we need help\, said an association member\, “People come from all over the world to this site. French-Canadian voyageurs\, known as voyageurs\, were among the most colorful historic visitors to Michilimackinac. Try your hand at voyageur games\, join in singing a rousing paddling song\, and master the skills these hardy men needed to keep the Great Lakes fur trade moving. \nAdmission: Cost: Adults: $12.50; Youth: $7.50; Under 5: Free \nHours: 9:00 am – 7:00 pm both days \nLocation\nColonial Fort Michilimackinac\n102 Straits Ave W\nMackinaw City\, MI 49701\n(231) 436-4100 \nFor More Information: Call (231) 436-4100; Email mackinacparks@michigan.gov \n \nWhat is a Voyageur Rendezvous?\nThe French started trading in furs in North America in the 16th century\, the English established trading posts on Hudson Bay in present-day Canada in the 17th century\, and the Dutch had trade by the same time in New Netherland. The 19th-century North American fur trade\, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance\, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French\, British\, Dutch\, Spanish\, and Russians. Indeed\, in the early history of the United States\, capitalizing on this trade\, and removing the British stranglehold over it\, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s\, however\, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed. \nIn canoe-based fur trade areas\, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes\, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nWho were the Voyageurs?\nVoyageur is a French word\, meaning “traveler”. Voyageurs were French Canadians who engaged in the transporting of furs by canoe during the fur trade years. From the beginning of the fur trade in the 1680s until the late 1870s\, the voyageurs were the blue-collar workers of the Montreal fur trade. At their height in the 1810s\, they numbered as many as 3\,000 men. Hired from farms and villages of the St. Lawrence Valley\, most spoke French and generally could not read or write. These men agreed to work for a number of years in exchange for pay\, equipment\, clothing and “room and board.” Most voyageurs would start working when they were in their early twenties and continue working into their sixties. Sometimes being a voyageur was a family tradition.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nHard working and tough\, voyageurs provided the power to move the canoes forward\, paddling at a rate of 40-60 strokes per minute\, often 16-18 hours a day. They were also required to carry a minimum of 180 pounds on their backs\, as both trade goods and furs were placed into standard weight bundles of 90 pounds each\, and each voyageur was required to carry two bundles\, though some carried even more. Twelve beaver hides paid the wages for a common voyageur for the year.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout Fort Michilimackinac \nFort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French\, and later British\, fort and trading post at the Straits of Mackinac; it was built on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan in the United States. Built around 1715\, and abandoned in 1783\, it was located along the Straits\, which connected Lake Huron and Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes of North America. \nPresent-day Mackinaw City developed around the site of the fort\, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Fort Michilimackinac was relocated to the new Fort Mackinac (don’t get them confused) on Mackinac Island during the American Revolution\, with some of the buildings moved across the ice in the winter of 1780-1781. The remaining structures were burnt to the ground. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Rendezvous at the Straits: Voyageur Culture at historic Colonial Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City\, Michigan. \nTags: Rendezvous at the Straits: Voyageur Culture\, Rendezvous at the Straits\, Voyageur Rendezvous at the Straits\, Michigan Rendezvous\, Michigan Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other Voyageur Rendezvous or Encampments

All re-enactors from the French & Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade are welcome. \n\nMille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\nSince 1993\, the Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous has been held in late June in a rolling field in the woods south of Mille Lacs Lake. The event produces a bloom of white canvas in the form of tents in the style of 200 years ago. The rendezvous has become a highly regarded living history event within Minnesota. It’s a regular destination for up to 150 living history participants living in a frontier city of 55 to 75 primitive camps\, and for many\, a yearly reunion. \nA big part of the experience is the camaraderie among the re-enactors\, known as voyageurs and buckskinners\, while the other is the passion of demonstrating skills and crafts of 200 years ago to kids of all ages. The fur trade era is well connected to the Mille Lacs area\, and there were multiple trading posts\, trails and portages present. And both Aitkin and Morrison Counties were named after fur traders. \nThe Rendezvous Camp is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.\, with a donation needed for entry by those over 10 years old. The location is six miles south of Isle or 16 miles north of Ogilvie on Hwy. 47\, then one mile west on Red Road. \nThe sights\, sounds and smells of 200 years ago come alive once again\, with the opportunity to bring home some Americana of the time that the participants make and sell. From this location the stream is sometimes called Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. The fort was isolated and the trappers were unable to obtain supplies. To add to their woes\, the winter proved quite severe\, causing the party to abandon this post in 1811. It was situated on the southeast side of the town of Egin\, Idaho\, about 2.6 miles from the Fort Henry Rendezvous site. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Henry Rendezvous the first week of June at the Fort Henry Rendezvous Site just north of Rexburg\, Idaho. \nTags: Fort Henry Rendezvous\, Fort Henry Buckskinners Rendezvous\, Idaho Rendezvous\, Idaho Buckskinners Rendezvous\, Idaho Mountain Man Rendezxvous \nView other Idaho Rendezvous

The first weekend in June\, Fort de Chartres State Historic Site hosts the largest rendezvous in Illinois or the Midwest with over a thousand participants\, hundreds of encampments\, and thousands of visitors joining in on the festivities. Based on the traditional French fur trapper’s rendezvous where trappers and traders would meet at a predetermined location to trade furs for necessities\, these rendezvous were the highlight of the fur trapper’s year and now the Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous is the highlight of Fort de Chartres’s extensive calendar of historical events and activities. \n\nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous\nThe Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous offers participants and visitors alike a glimpse into the period from 1740-1840\, a part of Illinois’ past when it was governed not only by France but by Great Britain and the United States as well. Costumed reenactors portray a variety of personas including colonial military units\, mountain men\, Native Americans\, settlers\, merchants\, and more. Historical demonstrations are located at various locations on the grounds and there are periodic demonstrations that include period music\, military drills\, and musket and cannon competitions. \n@ Fort de Chartres State Historic Site\, at 1350 IL Route 155\, 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher. The event is open and free to general public with special event parking for this event just $5 a car. Donations welcomed. For more information contact the site at (618) 284-7230 or email lesamisdufortdechartres@gmail.com. \nThe two-day popular Annual Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous features shooting competitions\, military drills\, dancing\, music\, food\, and traders of eighteenth-century-style goods. The boom of cannons\, the smell of campfires and a parade of colorful uniforms will transport visitors back to the 1700s. The Rendezvous features 18th century military units\, traditional craft demonstrations\, period music and dancing\, black powder shooting events and cannon firings – all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk\, buy hand-made crafts\, learn about French kitchen gardens\, and watch swordsmen duel\, taste delicious food and much more. \nFort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n[/fusion_gallery]\n \nAs Fort de Chartres is an Illinois Historic Preservation Agency site\, there is a wide variety of interpretive activities that can be found throughout the grounds. These activities run continuously throughout both days. In the Native Crafts area\, visitors can learn first hand the arts of bow and arrow making\, hide tanning\, basket weaving\, the use of native foods and herbs\, pottery\, the construction of wigwams\, and the history of how and why the fur trade became such an important frontier industry. There are also archery demonstrations and competitions. \nThe Colonial Area features demonstrations that include spinning\, dyeing\, the use of looms\, woodworking\, weaving\, quilting\, rope making\, coopering\, and blacksmiths. Located in the Fort buildings themselves are a French Patron (River Boatman\,) a French Marines quarters\, a Jesuit missionary in the Fort’s Chapel\, and the Piethman Museum. A French Colonial garden\, oxen\, and baked goods for sale from a working stone oven can be found near the demonstration areas. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country. Visitors can gain a lot of insight into the life styles of the fur trapping era by exploring the Primitive Camp. The reenactors are a friendly bunch and are happy to talk about the specifics of their camp and the personas they portray. Sutlers\, merchants\, and trade blankets are located throughout the grounds selling many period related goods that are only available at this type of event. \n \nLocation\nFort de Chartres State Historic Site\n350 State Route 155\nPrairie du Rocher\, IL 62277\nDirections: 4 miles west of Prairie du Rocher\, about an hours drive south of St. Louis.
