SUMMARY:Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park
DESCRIPTION:2019 Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe 33rd Annual Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park on May 18-19\, 2019 in Hebron brings 18th-century history in Indiana to life. Peek into the lives of those who would have lived or traded along the waterways of the Midwest more than 250 years ago when the marshes were a source of valuable furs desired by merchant traders to take back to Europe. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park welcomes visitors into encampments of French Canadian voyageurs\, French and British militia\, civilians and settlers\, and Native Americans. Artisans will demonstrate some traditional crafts of those times. The nearly 100 costumed reenactors adhere to details of the time period in their costumes and camps\, according to Robertson\, and share that sense of history with visitors to the event. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park is a family friendly event with lots of fun and interactive activities for the kids. Visit the Children’s Trading Post to pick up a scavenger hunt list. This list is not items to collect\, but rather items to look for at the event. Talk to anybody in costume to get information on the list item you’re looking for and get them to sign the form. When leaving\, the child may bring the completed sheet back to the trading post to trade for an item. The voyageur rendezvous is fun for all ages\, and it’s immersive — sights\, sounds\, smells and activities of that historic period. \nHours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday\nAdmission: $5.00 with children 5 and younger admitted free \nVoyageur Rendezvous Highlights\nEvent Highlights include Opening and Closing Ceremonies • Arrival of Voyageurs by canoe • Trade Session with the Native Americans • Storytelling • Tomahawk Throw • Fashion Show • Hot Food\, Cold Sarsaparilla and more. Saturday’s scheduled activities include canoe “bobber races” and storytelling. While on Sunday there will be a period clothing fashion show\, following which the public will be invited to join in historic dances\, accompanied by the fife and drum corps. There will also be historic games and make-and-take projects at the trading post\, tomahawk throwing for older children\, and fife and drum music on both days. Food will be available at the site and there will also be a vendor of period items. \nDaily Opening Ceremony\nAn opening ceremony begins the historical reenactment festivities each day at 10:30 a.m. and presents some perspective to the event. The British military\, French military and civilian re-enactors come from the camps and the Native Americans arrive. They meet at the flag pole. One of the re-enactors holds up a wampum belt in a gesture of welcome. Then three flags are raised: the French\, British and historical American flag of the time as the fife and drum corps plays the song of each nation from that historical period. A little later\, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday\, the voyageurs arrive. Their landings are another highlight of the event as they paddle in with their big canoes loaded with goods. \nLocation\nGrand Kankakee Marsh County Park\n21690 Range Line Road\nHebron\, IN 46341\n(219) 552-0033 \nFor More Information\nLake County Parks & Rec: Call 219-769-7275; Email info@lakecountyparks.com \n \nWho were these Voyageurs?\nTo equate the voyageurs of the fur trade era in the Great Lakes area to something today\, consider all the trucks on today’s roads. When voyageurs plied the area waters this was the wilderness. The rivers then were like the highways today\, and were very important to the history and the development and the economic growth in the area. \nHistorically\, the voyageurs landed and exchanged gifts with the natives first\, before any trading. They might spend a whole day exchanging gifts\, generally with the men\, after which most of the trading would be done with the women. The natives had the furs and the number one item the voyageurs offered was textiles. \nWhat is the Difference in a Mountain Man Rendezvous and Voyageur Rendezvous?\n \nSchool Day: Friday\nAdvance reservation required.\nMorning tour time slot: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.\nAfternoon tour time slot: Noon – 2 p.m.\nMinimum (20 students); Maximum (140 students) per time slot\n$2 per person\, including chaperones and teachers; $20 minimum\nReservations and deposit required at least ten business days in advance\nAppropriate for 4th – 6th grade curriculum\nReserve your time slot now. Space is limited and is closed when filled.\nCall 219-769-PARK\, M-F 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nHistory books open wide and come to life as your students visit the 18th century. The Fur Trade Era is bustling with activity when you arrive. Your students will see how the French Voyageurs played an important role in early commerce and trade right here in Northwest Indiana. Native Americans traded furs while the Voyageurs\, British\, and French clashed over ownership of the land. There is plenty for students to see\, hear and learn. They will feel like they just spent a day in the 18th century. You too\, will enjoy jumping back into history! The tour is completely outside\, so please remind your students to dress for the weather. Upon registration\, teachers will be sent a confirmation packet\, complete with pre or post activity sheets. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park in Hebron\, Indiana on the third weekend in May. \nTags: Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park\, Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park Voyageur Rendezvous\, Indiana Voyageur Rendezvous\, Voyageur Rendezvous \nView other Voyageur Rendezvous or Encampments

In May each year\, the Plainsmen Black Powder Club sponsor a “rendezvous” on private land Southwest of Kindred\, North Dakota. Participants\, sometimes called “buckskinners” come from the whole region\, including Canada to take part. The Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous is a family-friendly event\, offering a variety of shooting competitions. There’s a lot to see and do\, including competitions in hawk and knife throwing\, primitive archery\, games for children\, cooking contests\, homemade wine judging\, fire starting contests\, and many other activities. So\, step back to a time where you can sit and visit around a campfire\, enjoy a good story\, and share good food and good times. \nAdmission Fees\nOnlookers are free; Saturday 9AM-5PM Sunday 9AM-1PM\nCamping available\, $20 for up to 2 adults and children under 18 with $10 for each additional adult in same structure. \nLocation\nRendezvous Site\n6233 143rd Avenue SE\nSheldon\, ND 58068 \nDirections to the Rendezvous Site:\nSouth of Sheldon\, North Dakota. We are changing up the location this year and having our Rendezvous on the same location that the High Plains Regional Rendezvous will be located in June. Located 57 miles southwest of Fargo\, ND. Entrance will be marked. Watch for signs. (use map link at right) \nPlainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous Mini Gallery\n\n \nCamping or Facility Information\nPrimitive and Modern Camping; Registration fee for weekend of activity and camping is $20 for up to 2 adults and children under 18 with $10 for each additional adult in same structure. *Wood and water on site. Haul out your own garbage. All dogs must be leashed; clean up after your dog\, your kids & yourself. No generators in modern camp unless authorized by the booshway.* \nContact Information\nplainsmenblackpowderclub@gmail.com \nDuring the great fur trade era\, a rendezvous was the time all the trappers would get together to sell their furs and buy supplies from the “traders” who would bring supplies to the rendezvous site. At the rendezvous\, the men would renew old friendships and engage in various competitions to test their skills of every kind and character. There are black powder clubs in every state of the United States\, in Canada and even in Europe. There are several rendezvous held annually in our region\, including Bemidji\, Perham\, Detroit Lakes\, and Gary\, South Dakota. \nToday’s Rendezvous\nAt each rendezvous\, a “living history” or period encampment is set up and participants dress in period clothing and use period equipment. An area is also usually set aside for people to camp in modern tents or campers\, known as “tin tepees.” This allows people to participate who for a variety of reasons choose not to have a fur trade era (pre-1840s) period camp. There are events where only period correct camps are allowed on site. \nCompetition Events\nThe sponsoring club of any rendezvous runs many activities\, usually over a weekend. There are “national rendezvous” around the country that last a week or more. For example\, at the Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous\, we offer a variety of shooting competitions. There are also competitions in hawk and knife throwing\, primitive archery\, games for children\, cooking contests\, homemade wine judging\, fire starting contests\, and many other activities. \nAbout Plainsmen Black Powder Club\nThe Plainsmen Black Powder Club started in 1972 with a small group of men who had a passion for muzzle-loading guns and the ways of the past. We try to portray the ways of the mountain men. Some call it “living history”. Today\, the club is more family-oriented by dressing the parts of the past at rendezvous throughout the US. We dress anywhere from the 1750s to 1840s. At rendezvous we have shooting competitions\, trail walks\, tomahawk and knife throws\, women’s and children’s games. We can also be found just sitting and enjoying the peace and quiet. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous in May outside of Kindred\, North Dakota. \nTags: Plainsmen Black Powder Club Rendezvous\, Plainsmen Mountain Man Rendezvous\, North Dakota Mountain Man Rendezvous\, North Dakota Rendezvous \nView Other North Dakota Rendezvous

If you are interested\, please contact us! \nHistory of the Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous\nSince 1988\, the Saukville Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving\, recording and\nmaintaining the historical information and antiquities of the Saukville Area\, as well as promoting the awareness of the area’s historical culture\, to develop an understanding of\, and pride in\, our past\, and to recognize its importance in the future. \nFrom 1991 to 2006\, the SHS ran the Crossroads Rendezvous historical reenactment at Peninsula Park every third weekend in May\, bringing thousands of visitors to Saukville and providing an incredibly unique educational experience for area children and their families. Revenue from the event funded the restoration of the 1912 Firehouse\, located on Mill Street in Saukville\, that the Historical Society calls home. \nIn the fall of 2017\, Mary Boyle and Sara Dahmen\, two historical reenactors from Port Washington\, decided it was time to bring the Crossroads Rendezvous back. Together\, with their families and the Saukville Historical Society\, they are excited to introduce a new generation of visitors to the magic of living history and the important part “the crossroads” of Saukville played in the history of our community\, State\, and Country. Join us at the Crossroads this May! \nHistory of the Crossroads\nThe Township and Village of Saukville are located at the ancient crossroads of two major American Indian trails: the old Decorah Road and the old Green Bay Road. The Decorah Road became the present-day Wisconsin Highway 33\, and the old Green Bay Road became the road that is now part of the southern portion of Ozaukee County Highway O and the northern portion of Ozaukee County Highway W. The Indian trails crossed where the Milwaukee River makes an unusual bending loop\, forming a unique river peninsula.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe Green Bay Trail\, which had a great impact on the settlement of southeast Wisconsin and the State\, overall\, connected Fort Howard at Green Bay with Fort Dearborn in Chicago\, and ran through Saukville. This system of trails extended from Hudson Bay all the way to Florida. In 1993\, the Wisconsin State Legislature designated the Green Bay Trail route\, from the Illinois State line to Green Bay\, an official heritage route\, the “Green Bay Ethnic Trail.”\n* From the Village of Saukville Downtown Revitalization Plan[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nAbout the Sponsor\nThe Saukville Crossroads Rendezvous is presented by the Saukville Historical Society\, a 501 (c) (3) organization affiliated with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Fort Connah was a Hudson’s Bay Trading Post established in 1846. One of the three original buildings still remains and is believed to be the oldest standing building in Montana. The fort was active from 1846 to 1871. Another cabin has been moved onto the property and renovated for administrative purposes\, historical artifacts and displays. An 1870s log cabin-building has also been moved to Fort Connah for renovation. These two cabins and the original building will replicate the buildings that once made-up the original trading post. A semi-annual rendezvous gathering happens in May and September every year. A black powder shooting range is now complete and ready for use. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Connah Spring Rendezvous on the first weekend in May at the 1847 historic Hudson’s Bay Fort Connah Trading Post six miles north of St. Ignatus\, Montana. \nTags: Fort Connah Spring Rendezvous\, Fort Connah Spring Open House Rendezvous\, Fort Connah\, Fort Connah Restoration Society\, Fort Connah Rendezvous \nView Other Montana Rendezvous & Other Mountain Man Events

The Corps of Discovery of St. Charles is an all-volunteer organization and there is no guarantee that there will be reenactors at the site at all times or that the site will be open to visit. If you are planning to make a trip to visit Camp DuBois you may want to schedule your trip on Wednesdays through Sundays when Camp River Dubois\, the Illinois State Historic Site located 4 miles south of Camp DuBois on Route 3\, is open and both sites can be visited. Camp River Dubois features another version of 1803-1804 winter encampment and features a Visitors Center with 4 galleries of exhibits and displays. Visitors and other groups wishing to visit Camp DuBois should call the Wood River Museum and Visitors Center at 618-254-1993 to ensure that the site will be open. There is no charge to visit Camp DuBois. \nAbout the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site\nThe Lewis and Clark State Historic Site (about 3 miles from Camp Dubois) commemorates the 1803-1804 winter camp of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was at Camp Dubois that members of the Corps of Discovery prepared for their expedition to the Pacific Ocean. The 14\,000 square-foot exhibit space contains six galleries that outline the background and history of the Lewis and Clark expedition from its conception to its meaning for today’s America. Exhibits are kid-friendly\, offering opportunities for hands-on engagement. A “reconstruction” of the winter camp\, Camp Dubois\, is located on the grounds near the visitor center. Its design reflects 1803 U.S. Army regulations for the construction of military posts. Interpreters are on-site daily in the camp to explain how the men prepared for the journey. This is a ‘must see’ for folks that make it to the Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous. \n \nMark your calendar so you don’t miss the next Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous on the last weekend of October at Camp Dubois on the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Wood River\, Illinois. \nTags: Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous\, Camp Dubois Rendezvous\, Camp Dubois Mountain Man Fall Rendezvous\, Illinois Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous\, Wood River Rendezvous \nView other Illinois Rendezvous

Far different from the original mountain men rendezvous\, it was organized as a family event. Then called the Black Powder Rendezvous\, it was moderately successful\, attracting about 500 people. It was moved to its present location in 1986 due to the need for additional space and to take advantage of the natural beauty of the site a well as the traditional significance of the river in the lives of early settlers. \nThe first three rendezvous were sponsored and organized by the Hickory County Historical Society. During those years it grew tremendously\, both in scope and popularity. Due to this rapid growth and its increasing complexity\, a new organization\, the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous Association was formed to sponsor the event. The Rendezvous Association\, made up of local people and organizations interested in ensuring that area history is preserved. One way of doing so is through such annual events as the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous. In 2006\, the Hermitage Lions Club assumed the overall sponsorship of the event that is organized and operated by the Rendezvous Committee. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Pomme de Terre Rendezvous at Lake Outlet Park in Carson’s Corner\, Missouri. \n \nTags: Muzzleloader \, Pomme de Terre Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Pomme de Terre Voyageur Rendezvous\, Missouri Rendezvous\, Missouri Voyageur Rendezvous\, Missouri Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Fur-Trade-Era Rendezvous

Whether the portrayal is that of the western mountain man\, the eastern long-hunter\, or the Native American\, buckskinning allows people to recreate various aspects of this historical period at event such as the Spring Thaw Rendezvous. \nThe Rendezvous is both a history-oriented and social occasion. Many of the “buckskinners” in the Ball and Arrow Primitive Weapons Club enjoy attending and hosting Rendezvous where we camp in pre-1840 lodging\, cook meals over open fires\, and dress for that time period. \nThere are muzzleloading\, primitive archery and tomahawk/knife throwing competitions which take place during these events. Other activities sometimes include fire-starting competitions (using flint and steel)\, games for the children and singing around the campfire. Currently B&A members host three of these camps per year. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Spring Thaw Rendezvous at the Ball and Arrow Primitive Weapons Club in Roswell\, Ohio. \nTags: Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, Ball and Arrow Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, B and A Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, B & A Spring Thaw Rendezvous\, Ohio Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Ohio Rendezvous \nView Other Ohio Rendezvous
