The most likely theory of the mystery of Peter Lebec is that he was a fur trapper\, but not with a French Canadian company as was long suspected. It would appear that he was more likely a part of Jean-Baptiste Chalifoux’s gang of trappers and horse thieves from New Mexico who were known to be in the area in 1837. But local lore prevails. To this day\, a Peter Lebec Rendezvous is held each year to honor the mysterious frontier trapper. One thing is for sure: Lebec’s unfortunate encounter with a grizzly made him Kern County’s most famous mountain man. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Bakersfield Muzzleloaders Peter Lebec Rendezvous at the McCafferty Range near Weldon\, California. \nTags: Bakersfield Muzzleloaders Peter Lebec Rendezvous\, Peter Lebec Rendezvous\, Peter Lebec Muzzleloaders Rendezvous\, California Rendezvous\, California Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Buckskinner Rendezvous

Facilities at the fort include picnic areas\, a canoeing pond\, the replica fort including three cabins and restrooms. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFort Buenaventura has been constructed on the original site of the fort built in 1845 by Miles Goodyear and his wife. It has been reconstructed according to archaeological and historical research.. There are no nails in the stockade; instead\, historic wooden pegs and mortis and tenion joints hold the wall together. \nMiles Goodyear Builds Fort Buenaventura\nMiles Goodyear was a mountain man during the last years of the fur trade who built and occupied Fort Buenaventura in what is now Ogden\, Utah. \nAs the fur trades declined and way stations such as Fort Bridger began to spring up on the overland trails\, Goodyear decided to build an enclosed fort on the large westward bend of the Weber River\, approximately two miles south of its confluence with the Ogden River and about one-quarter mile west of the present end of Ogden’s 28th Street. The stockade was constructed with cottonwood logs set upright in the ground that enclosed about one-half acre of land adjacent to the river. It was begun in 1845 and completed by the end of 1846. Four log cabins occupied the corners of the fort\, and sheds\, corrals\, and a garden were also located within the enclosure. Additional corrals were located on the outside to accommodate cattle\, horses\, goats\, and sheep. The garden was watered by river water carried by bucket to the beans\, carrots\, cabbages\, radishes\, and corn. \nThe fort was occupied by Goodyear\, his family\, other trappers\, Indian helpers\, and visitors. It is apparent that Goodyear hoped also to use the fort as a base for trapping and trading\, and hoped also to profit from being of service to overland emigrants. \nIn July 1847\, Goodyear visited with the first Mormon company traveling west on the Bear River west of Fort Bridger\, and he tried to entice them to settle on the Weber River. He was successful. In November 1847\, he sold the fort and everything in it but his horse\, to James Brown (authorized by the Mormon High Council) for $1\,950. The settlement was soon called Brownsville and later\, Ogden.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Buenaventura Easter Rendezvous in Ogden\, Utah. \nTags: Fort Buenaventura Easter Rendezvous\, Fort Buenaventura Rendezvous\, Utah Rendezvous\, Utah Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Utah Mountain Man Rendezvous

Although pre-1840s dress and camps are encourages\, members are just as likely to sleep in a fully loaded RV as they are in a period appropriate teepee. \nThe Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders\, hosts of the rendezvous\, are a group of men & women that celebrates the skills of surviving in the pre 1840s. We hold monthly shoots and an annual rendezvous and treks. We shoot period correct trade guns\, rifles\, and pistols as well as practice hawk & knife throwing and flint and steel fire starting. The Russian-American Company\, worried about the dwindling supply of sea otters in their hunting grounds in Alaska and the northwest\, established Fort Ross on a bluff north of Bodega Bay in 1812. The colony would serve as a hub for Russian and indigenous hunters and traders until its abandonment in 1842. This marine-based commercial fur trade in California\, which was dominated by British\, American and Russian companies\, focused on selling luxurious sea otter pelts mostly to China. \n \nAbout the Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders\nThe Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders has been around since 1973. Until it closed in 1996\, members shot at the Cotati Rod and Gun Club. After the club closed\, members were forced to find a new site and headed north\, Tognetti said. Club members now meet up to shoot monthly at the Marie Hill Ranch rendezvous site\, which is on private property off Highway 128. The annual rendezvous is a much larger affair that runs from Thursday to Sunday and is held in April. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders Rendezvous in April at the Marie Hill Ranch in Yorkville\, California. \nTags: Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loaders Rendezvous\, Sonoma Valley Muzzleloaders Rendezvous\, California Mountain Man Rendezvous\, California Rendezvous \nView other California Rendezvous

While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Lancaster Lupton first came to the area with a military expedition in 1835. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. Come see his trade fort and walk through the inner plaza to visit the blacksmith and carpenter shops\, living quarters\, kitchen and food preparation rooms\, trade rooms\, cantina and storage room with historic artifacts.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout South Platte Valley Historic Park\nHistoric Fort Lupton (aka Fort Lancaster) and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park encompasses 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton\, Colorado. The land consists of a large natural and camping area immediately along the river and a high bench of land where the original Fort Lancaster was located.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAlong the river\, in groves of cottonwood trees are camping areas that can be used by Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops with reservations. These camping areas are also used by the re-enactment department of the SPVHS – the Tallow River Trappers – to hold periodic rendezvous events. Immediately along the river are nature areas that are home to deer\, turkey\, foxes and other animals and birds. At the north end of the historic park is a muzzleloading shooting range leased by the Fort Lupton Muzzleloading Club. \nStart your tour of the historic park at the re-creation of Fort Lancaster\, which was in operation from 1836 to 1844. Move down the path and see the restored trapper cabin from the 1850s\, which was originally located down along the Platte River in Adams County. Moving further down the path\, your will see both the Independence School built in 1875 and the Donelson homestead house built in the 1860s. The Donelson House and the Independence School represent the settlement of the Platte Valley started by the early fur trappers and traders.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nHosted by The Tallow River Trappers\nThe Tallow River Trappers is the living history branch of the South Platte Valley Historical Society\, sponsor of the annual rendezvous. The Tallow River Trapper has their own campsite below Fort Lancaster in Fort Lupton\, Colorado. They support five other rendezvous a year in addition to the \,and welcome all to attend. More about the Tallow River Trappers. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Frozen Toes Rendezvous in the rendezvous area of the South Platte Valley Historic Park in Fort Lupton\, Colorado on the last weekend in February (Thursday – Sunday with early setup the prior Saturday and Sunday). \n \nTags: Frozen Toes Rendezvous\, Colorado Rendezvous\, Colorado Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Pre-1840s Rendezvous \nView other Colorado Rendezvous

For five days on the last full weekend of February\, the calendar will be turned back more than 160 years\, when the Grizzly Mountain Longrifles\, a Prineville group of muzzleloader shooting enthusiasts\, holds its annual Horse Ridge Rendezvous. \nThe Horse Ridge Rendezvous will attract several hundred shooters from throughout Oregon\, and even from other states\, and in the tradition of the pre-1840 mountainman era\, most will be clad in buckskins\, furs\, calico\, and other period dress. \nShooting events include trail walks\, where shooters walk a trail\, pausing to shooter at each marked target. Targets are gong-type targets\, scored as either a hit (gong!) or miss. There’s a Pee Wee division for those 11 years old and younger\, Juniors ages 12 through 16\, and adults in both men and women classes. There are flintlock\, percussion lock and trade gun (smoothbore) divisions. \nCompetiton Divisions: Men’s\, Women’s\, Youth Senior (15-17)\, Junior (10-14)\, Pee Wee (0-9) \nCompetition Classes: Percussion\, Flint\, Trade Gun\, Hawk & Knife\, Pistol\, Archery Traditional\, Archery Primitive \nFees (add $5.00 if registering after Feb 16)\nEARLY CAMPING is available Tuesday\nIncludes Camp Fee\, Rifle\, Pistol\, Hawk & Knife Competition.\nAdult $20.00\nCouples $30.00\nFamily (with kids 10-17) $40.00\nExtra Rifle $10\nYouth Senior & Juniors not with family: $15.00\nPee Wee’s Free\nCamp Only $15.00\nHawk & Knife Only $10.00 \n\nPre-Registration (make checks to “GLMR”)\nMail to: Ted Hartman; 4377 NW Canal Blvd #1; Redmond\, OR 97756 \nLocation\nCowgirl Hideout Ranch\n64040 Johnson Ranch Road\nBend\, OR 97701 \nDirections\nFrom Bend\, Oregon @ US 97 & NE Franklin Avenue\nEast on NE Franklin Ave 3.6 mi\nLeft on Powell Butte Rd 0.9 mi\nAt traffic circle\, take 1st exit onto Alfalfa Market Rd for 9.4 mi\nLeft onto Johnson Ranch Rd for 3.6 mi \nFor More Information\nBooshway Short Stroke 541-788-2122 (AKA Ted Hartman) saddles@reagan.com \nA popular special event is the Long Gong shoot\, where each shooter takes one shot at a gone hanging maybe 100 yards away. Those who miss are out. Those who hit then move back a few yards and shoot again. This continues\, with each round being shot at a longer distance\, until all but one are eliminated. \nThe “Fort Shoot” requires four-man teams\, all shooting at stand-up targets (bowling pins and lengths of well casing)\, placed at various distances. The winning team is that which knocks down the most targets in 15 minutes. \nThere are events for muzzleloading shotguns\, pistols\, shoots for squirrel guns (.45 caliber and smaller)\, tomahawk and knife throwing\, and other activities. \n“Trader’s Row” is a popular area in the camp\, where vendors display and sell just about anything related to the pre-1840s mountainman era — hides\, furs\, beads\, guns and accessories. \nAlthough this is mainly a muzzleloader shooting competition\, it is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get involved in muzzleloader shooting to see what it’s all about — or just enjoy the period dress and fun. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Horse Ridge Rendezvous on the last full weekend in February (Wed-Sun) east of Bend\, Oregon. \n\nTags: Horse Ridge Rendezvous\, Horse Ridge Winter Shoot\, Horse Ridge Winter Shoot & Rendezvous\, Oregon Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Oregon Rendezvous \nView Other Oregon Rendezvous & Related Events & Shows

The event that seemed to attract the most interest was the winter shoot held in February. The first few shoots in February were just called a winter rendezvous. It soon became apparent that while the participants were enjoying themselves they were also freezing their backsides off. Thus the name Frozen Butt Rendezvous naturally evolved. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Frozen Butt Rendezvous in February at Corndodger Station near Frankfort\, Kansas. \nTags: Frozen Butt Rendezvous\, Kansas Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Kansas Rendezvous \nView Other Kansas Rendezvous\, Encampment or Related Events
